In this episode of the Cape CopCast "Chief's Chat" edition, we're giving you updates on several major projects within the Cape Coral Police Department. We're gearing up for the annual NAMI Walk, benefitting the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Chief Sizemore, the king of analogies, then illustrates the progress of Project 35 using the analogy of building a snowman. We also talk about entering the design and development phase of our police precinct buildings, which will be in each of the four quadrants of the city.We also recount a tale that exemplifies the power of teamwork and the spirit of Cape Coral. When a local gentleman experienced cardiac arrest, a quick-thinking family member and our dedicated police and fire rescue teams came together to save his life. We talk about reuniting with the man and his family, complete with plans for a future golf outing. It's stories like these that make us pause and appreciate the unique teamwork that thrives in our community.
Officers within the Cape Coral Police Department are equipped not just with the tools of law enforcement, but also the skills to compassionately handle mental health crises. Discover how our collaboration with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) provides our department with vital Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) programs. In this episode of the Cape CopCast "Chief's Chat," we dive into the essential role law enforcement plays in mental health as we start planning for next year's impactful NAMI Walk in Southwest Florida. Through our partnerships with NAMI, we explore the benefits of specialized training for handling complex conditions such as Autism and Alzheimer's. We highlight the crucial need for community support, urging engagement in activities like the upcoming walk in March, which not only sustains vital services but also empowers us to address mental health challenges head-on. Your participation can make a lasting impact, helping to create a community where mental health awareness and support are prioritized.>>LEARN MORE: www.namilee.org
...is moving. It's moving. I may have been at their Secor location on by myself on May 18th for the walk. So, it's a good thing NAMI's Family Navigator Sarah Gross visits to share much more than just the location change about this year's walk, and other ways she and NAMI can help you, a loved one, or maybe just some random strange you've found compassion for!

After hearing that Bonefrog's event season was going to wrap up after their Charlemont, MA and Stanhope, NJ events this year Mike blocked off the weekend for the New Jersey event and registered for the golden trident course! Bonefrog has been around for a while and offers a unique military feel to their course and festival area that other races do not. However, due to low registration numbers (which most OCRs are currently dealing with) and high prices to put on events (which everyone is dealing with), they announced that they will be pausing their events until things go back to normal. Originally Katelyn was supposed to cover the event as media as Mike ran 3 laps of the course to earn his trident medal but she was needed as a last minute volunteer at bag check. Due to this, all interviews were done after Mike had been thrashed on the course by the 60 obstacles in 9 miles. We are wishing the staff and crew of Bonefrog luck on getting back on their feet, be sure to follow along for updates and support these struggling races! 0:00 - 2:23 - Intro 2:23 - 10:19 - Quick News 10:19 - 11:31 - Content Preface 11:31 - 20:22 - Interviews with Ainsley Rogers (Bonefrog's registration director), Alyssa from Strong Together, and Reggie Walker 20:22 - 36:39 - Interviews with Brian Carney (owner of Bonefrog), and Amine Dib (founder of Hannibal Race) 36:39 - 44:13 - Gator Ride, audio from dips, burpees, and pull ups, as well as a volunteer rant 44:13 - 1:01:04 - Mike and Katelyn event recap 1:01:04 - End - Outro ____ News Stories: Asheville Spartan Venue Final Update Heidi Williams Back Surgery Recovery Ohio Savage Podiums: Men and Women Savage Series Final Top 10 AT&T Spartan Stadium Results Spartan Ohio Beast Results Spartan Ohio Super Results Spartan Ohio Sprint Results Spartan Montreal Beast Results Spartan Montreal Ultra Results Spartan Montreal Super Results Spartan Montreal Sprint Results Spartan North American Series Leaderboard: Men and Women Bonefrog Results Chaos Secret Link Duck Secret Link Conservation Secret Link Duckling Secret Link Abandoned Track Secret Link Annoying Secret Link GOAT Poetry Secret Link Shady Secret Link ____ Related Episodes: 20. NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness https://nami.org/. Sue Hall speaks with Kathy Forward Executive Director of Santa Clara NAMI and Merry Muse who is involved in several local programs. May is National Mental Health Awareness Month. NAMI Walk fundraiser is Sept, 21 2019 https://namisantaclara.org/
The vision that Suzette, NAMI, and the Schizophrenia Care Project all share is the belief that all people living with mental illness, and all families touched by mental illness deserve to live supported, informed, productive and meaningful lives. Suzette reviewed the history of NAMI from it’s humble start in Madison, Wisconsin to the present. In a personal revelation, she spoke of her own son who has been affected with bipolar disorder; as a school age child had anxiety and depression. She reviewed programs and outreach, and the mission to support, educate and advocate on behalf of those affected by mental illness directly or in the biological family or family of choice. The local NAMI has several departments including support at a peer to peer level, and family support levels. We noted NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) programs to support caregivers, especially the 12 week long class for caregivers of folks over age 18, and for those living with mental illness under 18 there is a “Basic” 6 week class program. They are “signature programs.” Additionally, Dr Ken moderates a Facebook group (S-Project) for caregivers. We defined the “Lived Experience” concept of the Schizophrenia Care Project and in Suzette & NAMI’s outreach, education, and support work. The “peer” is someone who has lived experience with mental illness. Staff at NAMI often have lived experience as well. This helps strengthen the culture of compassion and care for the services being provided. It should be noted that in Dr Ken Campos’ planned Schizophrenia Care Project Foundation residential homes this plan exists. It is his vision to instill and maintain such a culture of compassion among the staff -- from psychiatrist, to psychiatric technicians, to peers, to the cook and gardeners. Next, we discussed other programs such as the “NAMI – Walk” event in San Diego, which is a fundraiser walk and also a resource fair. We reviewed the National NAMI convention, and a state convention. Suzette told a success story of a young adult, transition age young man living with schizophrenia, and his initial down times, and subsequent growth into a thriving competent volunteer and activist. Acting with loving support is the solution. She emphasizes that hope and supportive people are always there.
Mike went down to Terrain Race in Connecticut to give finish line interviews another shot and ended up running it himself after! Jimmie talks about his subpar experience at Bonefrog, we hear about Katelyn's NAMI walk, and not much about Australia's Toughest Mudder (but maybe next week because Jamesy just got back to me as I am writing this XD but we will see) Thank you to the elites and Terrain Race staff that took the time to talk to me! Next weekend we will be covering John's experience at Run to Remember in Boston and maybe we will be able to get that Toughest Mudder Australia content! SHOW NOTES Dr. Tom Fletcher shares some of his observations about hip pain in endurance populations. Runners, cyclists and triathletes will be interested in this podcast session. Tom and I met years ago, working at an Ironman Triathlon. He is a triathlon junkie himself and is a great example of a treating doctor who gets into the culture of his patients. He practice in Sandy UT, just outside of Salt Lake City. Some of the topics we go into are: Hip Flexor Tightness Upper Quad Tightness Muscle Strains Hip Impingement Hip Labrum Tears Corrective Exercise And what day is the best to have a long ride in Utah. I’ve known Dr. Tom for years. As you will be able to tell on the podcast we have fun chatting. Dr. Tom Fletcher’s Bio: Dr. Tom Fletcher was raised in the Salt Lake Valley with his two brothers by his parents. He attended Brighton high school where he was involved with Rugby and as many Lake Powell trips as possible. After high school Tom moved on to the University of Utah. While at the University of Utah, Tom met his wife Delilah and continued his love for team camaraderie and athletics. It was not till Tom had nagging rugby injuries in college that he then sought out chiropractic care. The rest, as they say, is history. Tom attended Palmer College of Chiropractic West in San Jose, California. While in California, Tom excelled in academics and patient care for a variety of conditions. He was able to further his education by attending post-graduate programs such as Active Release Technique, Graston Technique, and HandsOn Muscle Therapy. California also offered the unique opportunity for Tom to volunteer in many events as a student intern. These events included: Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon, Cal Bearathon Triathlon, Bay Area 24-Hour Bike Race, Nami Walk for Multiple Sclerosis, Los Gatos Ballet, and many more. California also helped Tom develop his love for triathlon. During his first race he thought his lungs were going to explode as he climbed the Berkeley hills. Since then Tom has tried to compete in as many races as time allows. Races such as Stanford Treeathlon, Cal-Poly Triathlon, Wildflower Triathlon, Cal Bearathon, and the San Francisco Marathon to name a few. Upon returning to Utah Tom has continued his athletic and post-graduate academic goals by working with chiropractic mentors to improve his skills in patient-based care. Tom has also had the unique opportunity to work with fellow Ironman triathlon doctors. One of Tom’s proudest accomplishments is being on staff with fellow IRONMAN doctors at the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, IRONMAN Coeur D’Alene, and IRONMAN Arizona.
