150 Years Ago (April 1875) The shoe stores of Thomas Martin and Hugh Patterson were burglarized by culprits who fled toward Breakneck in a light wagon. "Strange to say, no reward was offered and, consequently, no pursuit was made," The Cold Spring Recorder reported. A week later, several pairs of ladies' gaiters were found in a buggy stored in an unoccupied building on Market Street that was once the Presbyterian Church. Allen Brewer appeared to have "skedaddled" from Nelsonville with all his family's goods except the calico. A miniature steam engine puffed away in a hole on April 2 opposite Patterson's shoe store to thaw a frozen pipe 2 feet below the surface that had prevented any water from flowing below Chestnut Street. The work continued for more than two weeks. On April 15, the engine exploded outside Mr. Murry's store and a piece of burning charcoal landed between the collar and neck of Jimmie Mellravy, causing a blister. Charles Emerson, who lived near Mekeel's Corners, claimed he killed six crows with one shot from his English fowling piece. Jackson Tompkins of Putnam Valley said he shot 12 foxes over the winter. The Episcopal bishop of New York visited Cold Spring for a Saturday morning service to install the Rev. Mr. Isaac Van Winkle as rector of St. Mary's Church. Van Winkle then left for a 10-day vacation. Twice in a week, a train was stopped by a malfunctioning south signal, which did not instill confidence in the system. Dr. Griffin of Nelsonville opened a branch office at the corner of Main and Stone streets that he manned daily from 7 to 8 a.m. and 5 to 6 p.m. Officer McAndrew caught two truants from the Rock Street School after "a lively chase." After guests at the Pacific Hotel heard wild geese honking on the river, they began to shoot at them for sport. The Recorder editor reported that Jacob Levi and Barny Clinton exchanged "a great many small rocks and vile epithets" just outside the newspaper office. A freight engine, while taking water at the station, sent a spark onto the roof of a shed, but a young man spotted the smoke and climbed to put it out. William Conroy drove to Sandy Landing Cove to wash the mud off his wagon, but the horse sank in the sediment. When Conroy climbed down to get it out, the horse knocked him into the water. After determining that the oath given to members of the Nelsonville board had been improperly administered, the village petitioned the state Legislature to legalize its past proceedings. The governor vetoed a bill giving the Garrison and West Point Ferry Co. a half-mile monopoly. He said it was unconstitutional to give exclusive benefits to a private corporation. The father of Miss Warner, author of Wide Wide World, died at the family home on Constitution Island. She sent for two clergymen to conduct the service but, when they failed to show, knelt by the coffin and led the prayers. There was a split in the Baptist Church among parishioners who wanted to dismiss the Rev. Benjamin Bowen and those who wanted him to stay. When a deacon said taking a vote would be illegal, most people left. Those who remained then voted to keep Bowen for another year. 125 Years Ago (April 1900) The M. Taylor Granolithic Co. rented the Truesdell property on Main Street to manufacture the liquid it used in its patented sawdust flooring. The Cold Spring Hose Co. changed its name to the Cold Spring Fire Co. No. 1. Dr. Lewis Morris, a former Cold Spring physician, was engaged to Katherine Clark, whose father planned to give the couple a mansion on Fifth Avenue. After Thomas Coe began selling 26 eggs for 25 cents [$9.50] at his dry goods store, Truesdell offered 30 for 25 cents; Morris, 35 for 25 cents; and Secor, 36 for 25 cents. Morris then went to 50 for 25 cents. Charles de Rham hired King Quarry Co. to cut a $1,500 [about $57,000 today] fountain and horse trough (shown today, below) for the highway near Indian Brook as a memorial to his late wife. Mrs. Michael Clare reported to the village po...

150 Years Ago (January 1874) The editor of The Cold Spring Recorder, citing the burglary of Seth Secor's store on New Year's Eve and "satanic" vandalism inside the Rock Street schoolhouse, lamented: "Our village had a most unenviable reputation between the years 1865 and 1870; but, for several years past the public order has been comparatively well preserved. We regret to be compelled to record our conviction today that we, as a community, are relapsing into the former lawless and shameful state." The three young men accused of breaking into Secor's store offered to meet with an informant at the depot to sell the looted cigars, but only one showed up and was arrested. A second was arrested five days later in Dutchess County; the third remained at large. A resident who wrote an anonymous letter to the Recorder claimed he had opened the door of the saloon that doubled as the entrance to the courthouse and encountered three officers and the suspect arrested at the depot standing at the bar. The prisoner, in handcuffs, was sipping from a glass of rum. After transporting the two burglary suspects to the county jail in Carmel, Officer Morrison and Undersheriff Dykeman had a chilly return. Their driver, after leaving the turnpike, made a wrong turn in the dark and the officers didn't arrive home until 4 a.m. Brian Dailey, coming out of Patterson's store with a paper bag of flour, had confidently swung it over his shoulder when it burst. After three boys, ages 6 to 11, were convicted of stealing brass from Paulding, Kemble & Co., a judge sentenced them to nine days in the Town Hall jail. A police officer from Boonton, New Jersey, visited the village looking for a house painter who fled in a stolen horse and buggy valued at $300 [about $8,000 today]. Detectives from Dutchess County traced Thomas Hicks, accused of robbing and killing his employer, to Cold Spring. Hicks was arrested while waiting for his breakfast at Mrs. Welch's boarding house on Market Street. Police said he had the victim's pocketbook with $120 [$3,100] inside. An 18-year-old student was arrested at the schoolhouse in Fort Montgomery and taken to Albany to face charges by a 28-year-old woman that they had been married in 1872 and he was obligated to support her. He provided an alibi and was released. The Recorder reported: "The regular, weekly deposit of mud has again made itself manifest upon the boots of our men and boys and upon the shoes and dresses of our mothers and our village. Indeed, the same omnipresent stickiness is distributed upon every threshold, tracked through kitchen and parlor, and lies in brown flakes by the bedside when we wake in the morning." Petitions circulated for and against a proposal by residents who lived south of Indian Brook to secede from Philipstown. 125 Years Ago (January 1899) The directors of the Cold Spring National Bank declared a semiannual dividend of 2 percent. Mr. Muller of Hoboken, New Jersey, leased the saloon and cigar store from the estate of the late G. Snider. The Recorder opined about Gov. Theodore Roosevelt, who took office on Jan. 1: "The new executive has been called erratic, but if he lives up to his message New York State will have a fair governor and the charge will fall." The temperature on Monday, Jan. 2, fell to 16 degrees below zero, the coldest day recorded since Jan. 30, 1873, when it reached 28 degrees below, and a day in 1835 when it hit 29 degrees below. After John Delaney fell ill with the grippe [flu], Frank Early filled in for him as the Main Street railroad gate tender. The Recorder noted a state court ruling that allowed people to keep dairy cans if they were so old or worn they could no longer be used to store milk. Dr. John Holland, a graduate of the University of Munich in Bavaria who had worked at hospitals in St. Petersburg, London and Paris, joined the practice of Dr. G.W. Murdock. Dr. Holland was also said to be a talented violinist and pianist. Navigation of the Hudson River between Newbu...

Today, Hunter is honored to speak with two people from the defense team of Nikolas Cruz, Casey Secor and Kate O'Shea, to discuss their role in securing a life sentence over the death penalty. Today's episode touches on an incredibly sensitive, complex topic about one of the most horrific crimes committed in recent memory. Throughout this episode, Kate and Casey draw on their years of expertise in fighting against the death penalty to explain how this incredible tragedy occurred. As is always the case in death penalty cases, Hunter, Kate, and Casey reveal the incredible advantages the prosecution is afforded, but despite these advantages, three jurors voted for life over death. In response, Florida has done everything in their power to make it easier for the state to execute people. Hopefully by the end of this incredible conversation, you will understand why Florida's response is one we should emphatically reject. What does inclusive travel actually look like? And, what could we be doing as travel business owners to make travel truly more accessible for all? Those are two questions I discuss with Kristin Secor in this episode of the Travel Coach Network podcast. Kristin was born with a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy, which impacts her mobility, strength, endurance, and breathing. Despite this challenge, she has travelled across the United States and abroad to 20 countries across 4 continents (so far). She started her wheelchair accessible travel blog in the hopes to inspire people of all abilities to travel to destinations they may have never thought possible, and make wheelchair accessible travel easier by providing much needed information and resources as well as organizing wheelchair accessible small group tours. President Biden has made it official: He's running again. And there is yet to be a serious challenger to Donald Trump. Is the upcoming race full of undesirable candidates? Then, politicians seem to agree that that TikTok should be regulated or banned in the U.S. as concern increases over China using the app to spy on Americans. How serious is this threat, and how will people react if it's prohibited? And music has an ability to bring us together, and country musician Ketch Secor from Old Crow Medicine Show takes it as his duty. Secor talks about the importance of trying to unite people from both sides of the gun debate — to talk about real solutions. Plus, he shares his new song “Louder Than Guns.” This is all discussed in front of an audience in Washington D.C. for a special live Left Right and Center.

Haeden Secor: Truett & Grace Construction “You're catching us in the very early stages. We probably went into business about seven months ago. So, we're definitely in the growing stage, mostly just making connections, networking, and stuff like that. The long-term goal is we're more of a general contractor. That's what the goal is. So, being in Lake Harwell, we're here on the lake. So, our long-term goal is, we want to start building custom lake homes, kind of designated more towards the higher-end homes is what my end goal is, but for right now, just getting started, I'm not turning down any projects.” - Haeden Secor Welcome to a brand-new episode of the Woodpreneur Podcast. Today, your host Steve Larosiliere is joined by Haeden Secor from Truett & Grace, a professional contracting company, Located in Hartwell, Georgia. Haeden launched his company roughly seven months ago. They were undoubtedly in the growing stage and were mainly networking and forming relationships. Situated in Lake Harwell, their long-term ambition is to build unique lake homes oriented more towards higher-end properties. However, as they are only beginning, Haeden is not rejecting any projects at this time. It's challenging to work a full-time job plus a side gig. Haeden's company's initial marketing strategy consisted only of yard signs and word-of-mouth, but he had to approach it slightly different. After all, he had a full-time job and was working from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM, so he could put only so much time into it. He also wanted to avoid overloading himself by advertising too vigorously. But how did Haeden handle it? Listen now and get the whole story! Read More!

Crypto influencer Adam Back, inventor of Hashcoin (which is used in Bitcoin mining) and CEO of Blockstream, shared his thoughts on Bitcoin recently. Responding to a Tweet claiming that Bitcoin would still hit six figures during the next market cycle, Back said that he believes Bitcoin could actually hit $100,000 this year as the DeFi sector crumbles. Despite the cryptocurrency market being down significantly from previous highs, Adam Back remains bullish. In the midst of widespread fear and 40-year record inflation levels, Adam Back reiterated a statement from last year in which he claimed Bitcoin ($BTC) would hit $100,000 by year-end. Of course, we now know Back missed his mark on the previous forecast but BTC did briefly surge to almost $70,000 during November. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Come join the NAMI event this Saturday beginning a little before 11 at their new Secor location. Are we a bowling town? Lots of stories and perspectives with my Dad. Hiding in the closet, him fighting a ticket for me and being disrespecting by Philly police, how I wound up in therapy when I was a little boy, how NOW is different and maybe just as bad as when he grew up. Him wondering I'll be unpartnered forever. I hope you enjoy this (my Dad will say it's costing me a lot to have him) but more than anything now, this is for posterity and the ages.
America's Land Auctioneer reminds us that land values are driven by fundamentals, not a one or even two year drought. Fundamentals that drive land values are Interest Rates, Commodity Prices, and Risk Management (Crop Insurance). The 2021 drought has been damaging to crops and forage throughout the western United States and starting to creep eastward into the Midwest. Still, land values remain strong, mostly driven by fundamentals.America's Land Auctioneer's guest this week is Dr. Gary Secor. Dr. Secor has been a Professor and Research Plant Pathologist for 43 years at North Dakota State University. He earned his BS and MS degrees from Montana State University and a PHD in Plant Pathology from the University of California, Davis. He is a leading authority in the area of potato disease, disease management, biotechnology, and variety development. Dr. Secor describes in detail how weather and other circumstances can affect the health of a plant and ultimately the yield of the crop.Follow Kevin at www.americalandauctioneer.com and on Instagram & Facebook. To get a free consultation or inquire about Pifer's Land Management please visit https://www.pifers.com/
It's common to see tech journalists make proclamations about how the internet has fundamentally changed the ways that we think, interact, and most importantly, argue with one another. It's also common to see them herald the arrival of a “new science” that promises to provide technical answers to all questions and solve all problems that come with the “disruptive” technologies that have “revolutionized” our world. But has the internet really caused such a drastic divergence from how we operate offline? And do we really need a “new science” for studying things like argument and disagreement, especially when already-established disciplines like rhetoric, philosophy, and the conspicuously named argumentation theory have been studying these topics for millenia? On today's episode, we offer a re:joinder to an infamous 2019 article in The Atlantic by Jesse Singal, entitled “The New Science of How to Argue--Constructively.” In the article, Singal profiles a man who claims to have invented a “new science of disagreement” - the Swedish blogger John Nerst, a self-proclaimed polymath who cut his teeth in the “Intellectual Dark Web”-adjacent, hyper-rationalist online blogosphere. Nerst's “new discipline,” which he calls “Erisology,” claims to have invented a series of tools to help people better navigate arguments and disagreements online. In reality, as we point out, Nerst has merely stumbled into concepts and theories that have been debated by theorists of logic and argumentation for centuries, such as stasis theory, ideographs, and “bracketing” social difference in public deliberations. The distinction, we find, is that Nerst's and Singal's vision of a new culture of disagreement is reliant on rationalist rules that belie an authoritarian social and political agenda. We also discuss how privileged men react when their ideas are challenged for the first time, Jesse Singal's beleaguered Twitter mentions, and what this article truly reveals about the nature of the internet: its power to elevate bloggers to the status of credentialed, peer-reviewed academics, as long as their ideas are laundered through online op-ed columnists. In the spirit of generosity, here is Nerst's follow-up blog explaining & defending his ideas: “A Defense of Erisology”Works and Concepts Cited in this Episode:re:blurb on Stasis Theoryre:blurb on IdeographsFahnestock, J., & Secor, M. Key quotes: ● "When we think about the stress response and the relaxation response, that heightened sense of stress is really about the fight or flight response. So it's nice to have a fight or flight response when we have an acute stressful situation that we have to react to...the caveat to that is that we want that response to go up and we want that response to go down in a proper time frame. When that response continues, it's like we're running away from that bear every single day. ” - Dr. Eric Secor ● “If we step back a minute and think about the work that we do, anyone that has a job that requires precision and requires extended attention to detail, in a sense, does need to practice mindfulness.” - Dr. Eric Secor ● “If you're thinking from a large system perspective, if you're not improving the health of your 30,000 employees, it's very difficult to contain your costs and have people be highly effective in very stressful changing situations.” - Dr. Eric Secor ● “We all know and take for granted that when we breathe very shallowly, our brain gets the signal that we don't have enough oxygen, and the brain likes oxygen because that's what it needs to survive.” - Dr. Eric Secor From all us at Cloud 9online . . .remember well being is our natural state as a human being.
