Active Release technique - involves the practitioner using his or her hands to apply pressure to the muscles surrounding the injured area, while flexing and extending the joints they are connected to. Using ART as a part of your regular training regimen can keep you on track with your training schedule! Many successful athletes stay fit by preventing injury and staying injury free. It's not unusual for a runner to not even realize that a problem is developing until there is a symptom. Oftentimes, a runner won't even realize that they are headed toward an overuse injury until it's too late. This is where Active Release Technique can be the most beneficial – warding off potential time lost to injury. Want to grab the complete guide?Click here

Improving your parasympathetic tone is essential for a healthy body. It directly impacts your autonomic nervous system, responsible for most of your bodily functions. Dr. Tim Jackson talks about how to improve your parasympathetic tone, why it’s important to reduce stress, and heart rate variability.   Build Your Parasympathetic Tone Use a Far-Infrared Sauna Deep Breathing Vagus Nerve Stimulation   About Dr. Tim Jackson Dr. Tim Jackson received his undergraduate degree in Health science and chemistry from Wake Forest University in 2003. He completed his Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) from the Medical University of SC in 2009. Realizing that manual therapy and orthopedic care helped only some of his patients, he began studying functional and environmental medicine, as well as digestive health, in an effort to help others achieve wellness.  Dr. Tim has an education in nutritional biochemistry, digestive health and its systemic effects, functional endocrinology, epigenetics, mold and Lyme disease, and auto-immune/neuro-immune disorders.  He completed the Spine portion of the Active Release Technique methodology, a system that addresses musculoskeletal trigger points and helps to expedite the healing process. Dr. Jackson trained with Dr. Kendal Stewart, M.D. to learn the far-reaching implications of methylation deficits and their role in Neuro-immune syndromes. Dr. Jackson features on The BulletProof Executive Podcast, Ben Greenfield’s Podcast, RobbWolf.com, The Huffington Post, as well as countless health and wellness summits.  He is on the advisory board for Your 2nd Half, a Program that helps collegiate and professional athletes transition from athletics into other careers, and The Medical Advisory Board for GreenSmoothieGirl.com, a site with several million visitors per year.  Dr. Jackson’s clinical expertise spans everything from brain rehabilitation, functional endocrinology, Lyme Disease and stealth pathogens, integrative gastroenterology, mold toxicity, epigenetics, and mitochondrial dysfunction.   Improving Your Parasympathetic Tone Dr. Tim Jackson brings a wealth of knowledge about how to improve your parasympathetic tone. This is a vital piece of your autonomic nervous system, which Tim gives a brief explanation of. Tim provides some helpful tips on how to improve your parasympathetic tone. First, he recommends using a far-infrared sauna, explaining how to best get started using one regularly. Tim shares some deep breathing exercises to help decrease your body’s stress levels. He recommends placing something on your stomach - not your cell phone - to practice those deep belly breaths. Tim also gives a few examples of how you can stimulate your Vagus Nerve.   Stress Impacts Your Parasympathetic Tone Stress can come from more than just your mental and emotional health. Tim explains some of the physical causes of stress, including your own internal health.  Stress can and does cause mitochondrial damage. This has an adverse impact on your parasympathetic tone, so it’s vital that you regulate the stress levels in all parts of your life. Something Tim encourages is improving your heart rate variability. Your heart’s ability to fluctuate rhythm is incredibly beneficial to your overall health. Your body is healthier and more resilient, leaving you with more room to tackle the stressors you come across. Do you practice deep breathing? How often do you use a far-infrared sauna?  Call the Integrative Health and Hormone Clinic today and schedule your first appointment at 319-363-0033.   Quotes “Cryotherapy and far-infrared saunas require a certain level of health of the hypothalamus, pituitary, adrenal, thyroid axis. Basically, if thyroid hormone isn’t optimized, cortisol is too low or too high, then you may not receive the benefits from that hormetic stressor. Detoxification is very energy-intensive.” [15:47] “One thing that all mycotoxins have in common is that they’re an immunosuppressant. You can take immuno-boosting supplements, but you have to take the bad stuff out as well.” [24:02] “The mind and mental stress are directly correlated with mitochondrial health.” [26:00] “The more your heart rate can fluctuate, the healthier and more resilient you are. I call that the physiological buffer zone: you have more room for stressors.” [27:45]   In This Episode What the autonomic nervous system is [7:00] How to build your parasympathetic tone [10:45] What frequency you should use a far-infrared sauna [14:45] Some deep breathing exercises to practice [17:00] How to stimulate your Vagus Nerve [19:00] Where your stressors might come from [22:00] What you need to know about mitochondrial damage [24:45] Why heart rate variability is important [27:30]   Links & Resources Use Code CALM for 10% off Adrenal Calm Get Your Free Mold Checklist  Use code DRGRAY10 for 10% Off Your Initial Consult with Dr. Tim Jackson   Find Dr. Tim Jackson Online Follow Dr. Tim Jackson on Instagram | Facebook   Find Your Longevity Blueprint Online Follow Your Longevity Blueprint on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | YouTube | LinkedIn Get your copy of the Your Longevity Blueprint book and claim your bonuses here Find Dr. Stephanie Gray and Your Longevity Blueprint online    Follow Dr. Stephanie Gray on Facebook | Instagram | Youtube | Twitter | LinkedIn Integrative Health and Hormone Clinic Podcast Production by the team at Counterweight Creative    Related Episodes  Episode 42: Benefits Of Sauna Therapy With Nicole Carlson Episode 21: How Trauma Affects Your Health With Dr. Keesha Ewers Episode 3: Food Is Medicine Pt. 1 W/ Dr. Terry Wahls Episode 4: Food Is Medicine Pt 2 W/ Dr. Terry Wahls

Athletes can often worry that they are “out of alignment” or that the little hip shift that they have in their squat is limiting their progress. And, to be fair, movement issues can cause some significant problems for people! Still, many folks think of their movement as being either “correct” or “incorrect” in a way that can be unhelpful. There’s also many misconceptions about the need to “activate” certain muscles or that things “aren’t firing.” While this colloquial way of talking about things can be a useful shorthand, it can confuse people in a way that results in them spending a bunch of time doing silly warm-up routines or burn a bunch of brain power worrying about minor asymmetries that everyone has. Check out the full conversation with Luke and Todd to hear how we think about movement, asymmetries, and muscle imbalances. Asymmetries are natural and aren’t something to “fix” [13:55] Many things — like Active Release Technique, stretching, and low carb diets — can be effective, but often not for the reason that gurus say they are effective. [22:30] Doing things “to feel good” is a better framing than doing things to “correct imbalances” [30:30] Some of the downsides to athletes thinking that they are fragile. Acupuncturist, Brian Yelverton has been helping me to walk through some anxiety issues. This is my first time doing acupuncture and now I am a firm believer in it! In the previous Podcast Episode, #51 I share my terrifying experience and walk through anxiety. It is within this process of overcoming the anxiety that I started working with Brian. Brian shares his story of how he became an acupuncturist to heal an injury he had and how he helps people to live their best lives.  Brian shares a few tools that may help you if you are struggling with pain in your mind and or body.  When I asked Brian to define success, he said, "success is about showing up each day and giving too in a positive uplifting way. It is about finding the common ground with others and sharing love".  We all have the power within us to create a positive gentle mindset that allows us to walk through any obstacle life throws our way.  Acupuncture is a wonderful way to ignite, restore, grow, and change our lives. SHOW NOTES Dr. Tom Fletcher shares some of his observations about hip pain in endurance populations. Runners, cyclists and triathletes will be interested in this podcast session. Tom and I met years ago, working at an Ironman Triathlon. He is a triathlon junkie himself and is a great example of a treating doctor who gets into the culture of his patients. He practice in Sandy UT, just outside of Salt Lake City. Some of the topics we go into are: Hip Flexor Tightness Upper Quad Tightness Muscle Strains Hip Impingement Hip Labrum Tears Corrective Exercise And what day is the best to have a long ride in Utah. I’ve known Dr. Tom for years. As you will be able to tell on the podcast we have fun chatting. Dr. Tom Fletcher’s Bio: Dr. Tom Fletcher was raised in the Salt Lake Valley with his two brothers by his parents. He attended Brighton high school where he was involved with Rugby and as many Lake Powell trips as possible. After high school Tom moved on to the University of Utah. While at the University of Utah, Tom met his wife Delilah and continued his love for team camaraderie and athletics. It was not till Tom had nagging rugby injuries in college that he then sought out chiropractic care. The rest, as they say, is history. Tom attended Palmer College of Chiropractic West in San Jose, California. While in California, Tom excelled in academics and patient care for a variety of conditions. He was able to further his education by attending post-graduate programs such as Active Release Technique, Graston Technique, and HandsOn Muscle Therapy. California also offered the unique opportunity for Tom to volunteer in many events as a student intern. These events included: Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon, Cal Bearathon Triathlon, Bay Area 24-Hour Bike Race, Nami Walk for Multiple Sclerosis, Los Gatos Ballet, and many more. California also helped Tom develop his love for triathlon. During his first race he thought his lungs were going to explode as he climbed the Berkeley hills. Since then Tom has tried to compete in as many races as time allows. Races such as Stanford Treeathlon, Cal-Poly Triathlon, Wildflower Triathlon, Cal Bearathon, and the San Francisco Marathon to name a few. Upon returning to Utah Tom has continued his athletic and post-graduate academic goals by working with chiropractic mentors to improve his skills in patient-based care. Tom has also had the unique opportunity to work with fellow Ironman triathlon doctors. One of Tom’s proudest accomplishments is being on staff with fellow IRONMAN doctors at the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, IRONMAN Coeur D’Alene, and IRONMAN Arizona. In this podcast session, I speaking with Dr. Scott Dunaway, who is all about the band... but also getting beyond it. Rehab exercises, as all exercises, have progression and regressions. Bands are great when they’re needed but your rehab should go well beyond the band. Ground contact/ transfer of force Rooting Simulation of the hip and ankle eHealth Coconut Oil Issues These are just a few of the topics we hit. Dr. Scott Dunaway is a chiropractor and owner of ChiroStrength in Clarksville and Nashville Tn. He graduated from Southeast Missouri State University where he majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry and Entrepreneurship. After this, he received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree is from Logan College of Chiropractic. Dr. Dunaway is full body certified in Active Release Technique, which brings most of the treatment focus around the soft tissues themselves and not just the joints. After 3 years in a more traditional chiropractic practice, he shifted his focus toward the concept of Movement as Medicine, specializing in sport rehab and educating clients on the importance of Better Movement quality. This focus in the clinic has shifted to embracing the E-health model as clinician, consultant and educator under the Chirostrength brand though e-books, e-courses, and various social media outlets. SHOW NOTES In this podcast session, I wanted to share my personal story about low back pain. I developed lower back pain when I was playing high school baseball at the age of 15. It was not overuse related… it was traumatic. The reason I say this is because majority of people’s low back pain seems to come out of thin air. Mine was a definite event. The injury put me out of my sport for 8 months, during which I saw a Physical Therapist for 3-4 months, a Massage Therapist, a Chiropractor, an MD, an Orthopedic Surgeon and lastly a Chiropractor specializing in Active Release Technique and Exercise Science. Dr. Ron Higura’s office in Orange, CA was my last stop and my reason for working with people today. In this podcast I go over the follow: My Injury Mindset My Rehab My Treatments My Recovery My Strength Training My Mindset today My recover was a process. It took a lot of hard work. I have been without back pain for the last 20 years. In this episode, we talk with Gordon Hay, who is the co-founder, inventor, and creative visionary for ALINE. Gordon offers some guidelines on when to worry about what you’re wearing on your feet, how footwear choices can change the appearance of your body, and how to get your feet and legs working in harmony. Find Out More About Gordon Here: @Hay_Gord on TwitterALINE Gordon Hay on FacebookGordon G. Hay on LinkedIn   In This Episode: [02:16] - What’s the big problem -- and the solution -- with regards to how we stand, walk, run, and otherwise do everything on our feet? [05:06] - You walk 2-3 million steps per year, which can lead to problems if you’re not walking properly. Gordon talks about this, revealing the problems with going barefoot, too much cushioning, and molded shoes or insoles. [09:26] - We hear about Gordon’s background in sports, and how he started to get involved in the kind of work he does now. [14:21] - How do you compensate for the differences between one person’s left and right feet? [17:18] - Gordon produced the first round of a foot suspension system about a decade ago, he explains. [21:50] - How do you diagnose your foot or alignment problems without having access to the laser device that Gordon brought to the Bulletproof conference? [24:12] - Gordon talks about how to “get your guitar in tune,” as he puts it (in other words, to get your feet and legs working in harmony). [26:20] - If someone wants to get diagnosed with Gordon’s laser device, how can they get that done? [30:27] - Gordon offers some guidelines on when to worry about what you’re wearing on your feet. [37:14] - We hear about ALINE’s options for kids, and Gordon shares his thoughts about the best time to start having your kids use these products. [39:43] - Gordon talks about the shoes with wheels in the heels. [41:01] - Are there ALINE options for high-heeled shoes? Not at the moment, Gordon answers. [42:52] - Stephan talks about resistance stretching and the conversation he had about it with Luther Cowden. [44:08] - Gordon responds by talking about Active Release Technique. [48:00] - If you can’t use the foot suspension system, something really isn’t moving well and there’s a big problem. Gordon gives advice on how to use it and when to incorporate it into sports. [49:22] - We hear about how footwear choices can change the appearance of your body. [51:57] - Do you need to worry about what footwear you’re wearing if you’re sitting down? [54:54] - Gordon talks about the products available at ALINE.   Get Optimized! Avoid using super-cushioned shoes or insoles, which Gordon compares to walking on a pile of marshmallows. These can disrupt foot function. Even though you shouldn’t use too much cushioning, don’t choose to go barefoot instead. We didn’t evolve to walk on paved surfaces, so our feet aren’t equipped to handle them. Don’t fall into the trap of using molded shoes or insoles. Your feet need to be able to move, not forced to stay in one position.   Links and Resources: @Hay_Gord on TwitterALINE Gordon Hay on FacebookGordon G. In this week's interview, I speak with Dr. Kevin Christie, who is a chiropractic physician and Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) who specializes in sports medicine and fitness. Dr. Christie is also certified in Active Release Technique (ART) and Graston Technique, which are the leading soft-tissue diagnostic and treatment protocols that deal with over-use strain that plagues today's society. During our discussion, Kevin answers the following questions: What is ART? What type of conditions is it useful for? How quickly can someone experience success with ART? Are there things ART shouldn't be used for? Can you walk us through a typical ART treatment? Can anybody do ART, or should people be looking for someone with a certification? I have a friend with a nagging achilles injury that just got back from a sports therapy clinic. They are using nitro patches on the inflammed site, then will be doing concentric stretches/strengthening of the area, all to hopefully get more blood into the site to promote healing. Have you heard of this? What would be potential side effects? Do you think it would be effective for just this type of injury, or might it potentially be useful for other injury site (namely ITBS on the knee). Mike Schrankel asks: What do you think of Low Volume/High Intensity weight training? One apparently reputable website (http://www.exrx.net/WeightTraining/LowVolumeTraining.html) goes to great lengths explaining that performing extra sets beyond one light warm-up and one heavy set of 8-12 reps yields only 0-5% more muscle growth. But most pros, including yourself recommend 3-5 sets. I've checked out your "Get Fit in 30 minutes or Less" (12/5/10) post, in which you recommend 5 sets. I like the short time commitment, but I'd like to do a wider variety of exercises with less sets if I can get decent results (i.e., more lean muscle, not "big and brawny") Lorna asks: why does it matter whether I burn fat or glycogen during my workout? I thought that if I am in deficit at the end of the day - fat will be used for energy - giving me a body fat loss. Whether I burn glycogen or fat - a deficit will mean fat stores reducing when it all balances out- will it not? Laurel asks: I have two questions.  1-Are there homeopathic or home remedies for Raynauds phenomena? 2- You tout magnesium, what do you think of epsom salts as a source? In my response to Laurel, I recommend the Future Health Now Encyclopedia (pictured right) and the Magnesium Flakes from Ancient Minerals. Jeff has a call-in question about soreness when getting started with weight training. In my response to Jeff, I recommend he listens to the first 5 episodes of the Get-Fit Guy's Quick & Dirty Tips Podcast Ralph Sanabria asks: Ben, I have a hard time running (more breathing). I've been told that I have athletic induced asthma. I've been told this because i have a hard time breathing during. and it sounds like wheezing. Is there anything that i can do to help with this? In my response to Ralph, I recommend oil of oregano. Cat asks: Do you know of any potentially harmful effects of chewing sugar-free gum? I am a student and find that chewing gum helps me to stay focused while I work, but it seems like I've developed sort of an addiction to it. Are there properties in sugarfree gum that could make it addictive and harmful to health? In my response to Cat, I mention "Spry" gum. Ryan asks: I recently read this article http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2011/02/california-deaths-after-lap-band-surgery-lead-to-lawsuits.html  about complications that are occurring with lap band surgeries. My sister is considering a lap band surgery and this article really concerns me! I thought you might find it interesting and would like your thoughts on this. -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community!
