In this moment when all of our rights are under attack within the U.S., we are all fighting multiple battles simultaneously. But there is one area which unites us - health care; each of us needs it, and far too many people do not have access. I caught up with Kelly, an organizer with the Non-Violent Medicaid Army (NVMA) which is “a growing, politically independent force of the poor and dispossessed, united across identities, regions, races and issues, modeled after MLK's 'nonviolent army of the poor' from the first Poor People's Campaign of 1968.” NVMA “is not a coalition or a campaign but a network of organizations and committees that understand healthcare to be a strategic front of struggle to unite the working class,” and there are chapters across the country within Wyoming, Wisconsin, Texas, Indiana, Georgia, Massachusetts, Illinois, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, Maryland and Vermont. Throughout our time together, Kelly and I discuss her personal journey, and how liberation theology informs her activism, healthcare as a human right, the inequities within our healthcare system, and the need for collective action to address injustices while advocating for change. We also delved into the importance of community engagement and storytelling in pushing for healthcare rights, particularly through the NVMA; through #MedicaidMondays where they spotlight folks personal stories across their social media platforms (share your story by applying here), the impact of NVMA's National Call-In Days speaking up for Medicaid, along with the lessons they took away from last year's National Week of Action (September 21-28, 2024). Ultimately, Kelly and all the NVMA organizers remind us, through their daily work, that we belong to each other; and our voices are needed in the ongoing work of collective liberation.  Monthly Saturday schools educate the community about Medicaid and healthcare rights. Sign up to attend Saturday, April 5, 1pm EST and watch the March 2025 session. Stay connected with NVMA on social media: Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. > Head to show notes for key episode takeaways, additional resources, and learn more about Kelly Smith who is on the national organizing team of the Nonviolent Medicaid Army and is co-coordinator of the New York Nonviolent Medicaid Army. She previously served as Tri-chair of the NYS Poor People's Campaign (NYSPPC), a role she held for several years. She is still involved with the Poor People's Campaign, mentoring leaders, working with the New York City Regional Committee and serving on the NYSPPC Coordinating Committee.

Send Wilk a text with your feedback!Preparing Our Children with the Skills To Navigate Toxic PolarizationToday, we're diving into one of the most critical topics of our time—how we can equip the next generation to navigate a world that often feels more divided by the day.As someone who's worked through my own journey from anger to understanding, I know firsthand the importance of teaching people to bridge divides. But what if we could start even earlier? What if we could teach kids—not just as they grow, but while they're still forming the skills and perspectives that will shape their entire lives—to think critically, build empathy, and connect across differences? Our guest today is Kent Lenci, a true pioneer in this space. Kent spent 20 years as a middle school educator, holding roles as a teacher, coach, and leader, before founding Middle Ground School Solutions in 2019. His mission is simple but powerful: to help prepare today's students to ease tomorrow's political polarization. From creating curriculum for the Better Arguments Project and the National Week of Conversation to writing his book Learning to Depolarize, Kent has been on the front lines, empowering educators to teach kids how to engage with empathy and civility in a divided world. We'll talk about Kent's journey, the challenges today's youth face, and why early intervention in education is key to countering the effects of divisive media and polarized environments. Kent will also share actionable insights on fostering emotional intelligence and media literacy in kids, along with the role human connection plays in creating lasting change. This is exactly the kind of conversation that embodies the spirit of Derate the Hate—finding ways to turn tension into understanding and anger into action. TakeawaysKent Lenci transitioned from teaching to founding Middle Ground Solutions.Early intervention in education can prevent polarization.Media literacy is essential for critical thinking in youth.Emotional intelligence helps children navigate complex social dynamics.Building connections across divides is crucial for understanding.Human connection is key to overcoming polarization.Organizations like Pro Human Foundation and Braver Angels work towards a better future. What have you done today to make your life a better life? What have you done today to make the world a better place? The world is a better place if we are better people. That begins with each of us as individuals. Be kind to one another. Be grateful for everything you've got. Make each and every day the day that you want it to be! One unique way to help seniors feel great about themselves is via memory training. In this episode, Dana Steinova discusses her memory training approach based on mnemonics. Its power is in its ability to change the mindset of people who suffer from memory lapses and people who are giving up, accepting their memory problems as inevitable or something that belongs to the natural aging process. Her program convinces the participants that, in reality, they have tremendous mental potential. They activate special circuits in the brain that people unfamiliar with such techniques leave idle. The program works because cognitive and social effects are so connected. People learn to remember well and usually don't resist performing their new skills in front of family members or friends.Once people get proof that they can remember well, they start to approach any new information with a positive expectation that they will remember it, which affects the result. The outcome is that they minimize memory lapses in daily life. They do not need any calendar because they keep the entire year in their mind and can tell you what day of the week is any date in the current year. They can easily remember a shopping list with 150 items or any line of digits, and they improve their ability to remember faces and names. In this episode, participants will discover how to:Use mnemonics rather than memorization to make memories more durableMinimize memory lapses.Exercise new parts of the brain and build our brain reserve to help in the case of stroke, brain injury, or onset of dementia.About Dana Steinova:Dana Steinova travels the world training memory trainers. Based in Prague, she is a specialist in organizing educational activities. She is also the very active secretary general of the European Federation of Older People (EURAG), created in 1962, with 156 member associations in 33 European countries. She holds degrees from the Institute of Enlightenment, the Economics University, and the Charles University in Prague. She has, over the past 30 years, initiated a wide variety of programs, including the U3A movement in the Czech Republic (1986), reciprocal senior student exchanges with more than 42 exchanges within its first ten years (1991), and founding the first intergenerational non-vocational "University of Free Time" (1993) in the Czech Republic. She is fascinated by neuroscience and has been deeply involved with memory training since 1993. She founded the Czech Society for Memory Training and Brain Jogging in 1998 and later, the EURAG Memory Training Center in Prague in 2002 with the objective of making training opportunities available worldwide. Since then she has traveled the world extensively to achieve this objective. She organized the first National Day of Memory Training as a part of Brain Awareness Week, the worldwide event launched in 2005 by the DANA Alliance of the Brain and which takes place in March every year. In 2008 it became the National Week of Memory Training and has been growing ever since. One of those – Living Room Conversations is an organization that helps people to have safe, peaceful, comfortable conversations about the kinds of issues that we find disagreement about, that we feel a great deal of passion about. This week, I'm replaying Episode #89 – “Living Room Conversations: Connecting Across Divides” my interview with Annie Caplan from Living Room Conversations to remind you of the insights and tools she shared with us to help you get ready for the Finding the Way Out Challenge & the National Week of Conversation.Highlights of our conversation include: dialogue ≠ debateunderstanding doesn't require agreementthe value of listening to learn & understandhow suspending judgement can help us gain new insightsYou can access all the Living Room Conversations resources here: https://livingroomconversations.org/and access their Conversation Agreementsat: https://livingroomconversations.org/conversation_agreements Contact Annie Caplan directly at: annie@livingroomconversations.orgContact Kathleen Oweegon at: oweegon@bridgesofpeace.com to share your ideas and feedback for this show. Welcome to “Connecting Across Divides”, Episode #67 of Co-creating Peace, a series about conscious communication and conflict transformation.  The 2022 National Week of Conversation takes place April 24-30. It is a week of events and activities that bring people together across differences, and gives people an opportunity to experience dialogue and deliberation. I encourage you to harvest the opportunity to experience Dialogue & Deliberation by participating, You'll find information about how to participate in the National Week of Conversation at the end of these notes.I feel very strongly about the enlightening and healing power of dialogue, and the amazing potential to co-create a better future that collaborative deliberation brings forth. To help you have a sense of dialogue and deliberation and how it is being used around the country, last week's episode and today's are devoted to two innovative and dynamic organizations whose focus is to bring people together for conversation, connection and the opportunity to co-create new and better paths forward. Last week, Courtney Breese of the National Coalition for Dialogue & Deliberation joined me to talk about how dialogue & deliberation can bridge divides and help people connect with, and better understand, one another as fellow human beings despite different viewpoints and affiliations.Joining me today to talk about how dialogue and deliberation are being used by groups of young adults across the nation, are two inspiring young women from a dynamic student- student led organization called Civic Synergy.Civic Synergy is a student-led political depolarization organization bringing together young adults from across the political divide to communicate and collaborate. Over the course of 6 weeks, participants learn and practice conflict resolution skills and develop policy proposals which are presented to U.S. representatives at the end of the program.Laura Chen, Director of Program Development and Co-founder of Civic Synergy, is a senior at MIT studying chemical engineering and minoring in public policy. She is passionate about tackling sustainability and equity challenges and enhancing public participation. At MIT, she has enjoyed contributing to academic research and being a part of the Varsity Field Hockey team, the Terrascope community, and the MIT Water Club. In the fall, Laura is excited to join the Coro Fellows Program, a leadership and public affairs fellowship.Claire Kane is a freshman student at Clemson University studying Political Science and Communication. Claire is a first time Civic Synergy participant and seeks to explore more about civil discourse and discussion. Claire is involved on campus with the sorority Gamma Phi Beta, Clemson Club Swimming, and RHA. There is so much we can learn from one another by simply sitting down together exchanging ideas without trying to change each other's perspective or opinion, just listening to learn how others see the world and why. I encourage you to harvest the opportunity to experience Dialogue & Deliberation by participating in the National Week of Conversation – a week of events and activities that bring people together across differences. The 2022 National Week of Conversation starts tomorrow, Monday April 24 and ends on April 30. As I write this on April 21, 2022, America Talks is underway.  Americans with different backgrounds and beliefs are firing up their computers, turning on their cameras and talking to each other, face-to-face.  On purpose.  And with a purpose.  Creating connections to build bridges across our divides, find a path forward, and remind us of our common humanity.Talking and ListeningMy guests this week personify how the simple, yet courageous acts of talking and listening, are a key part of the solution to our country's challenges.Joan Blades is a liberal icon.   She co-founded MoveOn. org, the champion of progressive values.John Gable is a a former Republican operative and once worked for three Senate majority leaders, including the current one.On the surface, there's no way these two could be friends. But a funny thing happened on a walk in the parking lot:  they discovered they care about the same things.  What they didn't agree on was a path to get there.  But that didn't stop them.  And the next thing you know, a friendship was born.Their walks are now weekly.  They routinely seek each other's perspectives on all sorts of issues.   And they are working together to help bridge our country's divides.Living Room Conversations, the non-profit Joan co-founded, and AllSides.com, the company John co-founded, have partnered with each other.  And they are both partners of America Talks.Join the ConversationI invited Joan and John to join me live on Instagram to talk about their collaborative work, their friendship and their hopes for our future. That conversation is this week's podcast. Please watch or listen and then join the conversation.  There's still time.  America Talks is underway through Saturday, April 23rd, the next online event. And this year's National Week of Conversation is April 24th through 30th, powered by the #ListenFirst Coalition of 400+ organizations, America Talks Co-creators and allies across the country.www.ourvoicesmatterpodcast.comwww.lorellemedia.comThis podcast is devoted to empowering us all to better understand each other's differences...one story at a time.  Emmy Award-winning journalist, Linda Lorelle, guides guests through insightful, unexpected conversations that reveal our common humanity.  This show is not about politics per se; it is about finding a way to reclaim civility in the context of the contentious times in which we live, by sharing our personal and professional stories, in hopes that others might find a glimpse of themselves.Support the show (http://patreon.com/OurVoicesMatterPodcast)

Welcome to “Let's Talk About It”, Episode #66 of Co-creating Peace, a series about conscious communication and conflict transformation.  The difficulties we have with one another are very often the result of lack of insight and understanding. In the absence of information we make assumptions about one another – assumptions that often lead to conflict. There is a cure for this phenomenon, and that is dialogue – sitting down with one another to have conversations that help us to learn about one another at deeper levels. When we put aside our assumptions, our biases, and the fears on which those are often based, and enter into dialogue with not only a willingness, but a desire, to learn about others and the way they experience and see the world, and then deliberate together to arrive at paths forward that can better meet the needs of all, we begin to build bridges of peace which can one day span the world.Joining me today to talk about dialogue and deliberation is Courtney Breese, Executive Director of the National Coalition for Dialogue & Deliberation (NCDD), a network of innovators who bring people together across divides to discuss, decide, and take positive action together to address today's toughest issues. In addition to serving as the Executive Director of the National Coalition for Dialogue & Deliberation (NCDD), Courtney Breese is a trainer, mediator, and facilitator with extensive experience working on state and municipal engagement efforts. She started facilitating dialogues as an undergraduate at Franklin Pierce University, where she received a bachelor's degree in social work and Counseling. To learn more about the National Coalition for Dialogue & Deliberation, go to www.ncdd.org. If Dialogue & Deliberation is something that you would like to experience, you can begin as early as this coming week by participating in the National Week of Conversation – a week of events and activities that bring people together across differences. Pearce Godwin is described as the national voice for bridging divides—is Founder & CEO of Listen First Project, Executive Director of National Conversation Project, and leader of the #ListenFirst Coalition of 300 partner organizations. He catalyzes the #ListenFirst movement to mend the frayed social fabric of America by building relationships and bridging divides. His passion is combating the universally felt crisis of distance, division, and dehumanization across differences with conversations that prioritize understanding. Pearce graduated from Duke University and received an MBA from UNC-Chapel Hill. He spent five years working in Washington, DC—in the U.S. Senate and as a national political consultant for presidential and statewide campaigns. Before moving home to North Carolina in 2013, Pearce spent six months in Uganda, Africa where he wrote It’s Time to Listen. The National Week of Conversation is a bold attempt to reduce the yawning gap between Republicans and Democrats. More than 100 groups across the country are involved in online and in-person events from April 20th to April 28th. We look at how the project works and why it can make a difference. With American politics increasingly dominated by personal insults, name calling and dogma, a growing movement for greater civility is emerging. "The ever-widening gulf..is one of the most significant trends to emerge in U.S. society in the past two decades," says a Gallup polling analysis. Our guests in this episode, John Gable and Joan Blades, are leaders of a growing project to bring Americans together to talk it out, mending the bitter partisan divide "one conversation at a time." #ListenfFirst and #NWOC are the hashtags they use on social media. "When you only talk to people just like yourself, and we only get information that confirms what we already think, we become much more extreme in our beliefs and much less tolerant," says John.Living Room Conversations, the group Joan co-founded, is hosting five online events as part of the National Week of Conversation. AllSides, the website that features news reports from the left, right, and center, is also deeply involved. Big Tent Nation, Bridge Alliance Partners, NCDD, The National Coalition for Dialogue and Deliberation, and The National Institute for Civil Discourse are organizing partners. Since we started our weekly news solutions show nearly three years ago, "How Do We Fix It?" has been committed to addressing the crisis of political paralysis. We are pleased to promote this cause. Students all over Philadelphia are being pushed out of schools and right into the school to prison pipeline. This is happening because of the lack of resources inside schools and the use of harsh discipline practices that force students into the criminal justice system. But students from several organizations are fighting to end the school to prison pipeline, as members of the Campaign for Nonviolent Schools. Many of these students shared their experiences at an event called Youth Speak-Out Against Push Out. It was a part of the Dignity in Schools National Week of Action on School Pushout. This radio piece features students' voices from this powerful event. It was produced by Shayla Johnson and Andrea Jobe.
