Genna Pyewacket is a naturopath and herbalist with a special interest in functional medicine. Training in Canada as a teen under the guidance of a traditional herbalist, she continued her studies formally in Australia studying at Nature Care College in Sydney, where she graduated in 2004 with an Advance Diploma of Naturopathy and a Bachelor of Health Sciences (UNE), followed by an Advance Diploma of Homeopathy in 2011 (Endeavour College). Her naturopathic practice has shifted focus from the clinic to the kitchen over the last six years with her business, Pyewackets Traditional. Her focus there is on fermented fruit and herb preserves known as shrubs, apple cider vinegar tinctures and tonics, as well as bitters. With her drinks, she hopes to help improve the health and nutrition of her customers, as well as their relationship to every day kitchen medicine and plants . She lives in Lismore New South Wales with her family. During our chat, Genna shares how as part of her environmental activism in her early teens, she found herself on a herb walk, immersed in the medicine of the old growth forests. This was such a lightbulb moment that from then on, she was determined to learn more and started studying herbal medicine at only 17 years old, with a local herbal elder- which led to an apprenticeship when she finished school and further learning with renowned herbalist Rosemary Gladstar. Genna shares her journey from Canada to Australia to further her studies in herbal medicine and the evolution of her connection with the plants. She shares her passion for shrubs and their historical significance as a preservation method for fruit and herbs. Being lucky enough to live in the Northern Rivers with an abundance of local produce at her fingertips, Genna paints a picture of her adventures across the countryside picking up surplus citrus, herbs hanging out the windows of her little car… We chat about what's growing in Genna's garden and she shares a little known use for that common sub-tropical fruit tree, the paw paw…(hint, it's not the fruit!) Genna shares some of the ways women can tune into their self care needs by observing changes to their cycle and we agree that this can be a really tangible way to see the impact of self care practices. Entering the season of peri-menopause has shifted her nervous system in different ways and Genna shares a herb that she has found to be a wonderful ally at this time… We talk about different constitutional types and how having an awareness of our own constitution can influence the how, when and why of our self care. Genna describes what she sees as the two most important ingredients for seeing the long term benefits of self care by telling a beautiful story about the lasting impact of the waves or moving water on a stone or rock… We finish our chat with a gorgeous image of Genna in the lavender fields of the south of France with the fragrance of one of her favourite herbs wafting over her… **CONNECT** Pyewackets Traditional https://pyewacketstraditional.com/ Instagram https://www.instagram.com/pyewacketstraditional/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/PyewacketsTraditional/ **THE ELDER TREE TROVE PATREON COMMUNITY** You can join our Patreon here and gain a deeper connection to our podcast. Small Biz Matters: People, Policy, Purpose ~ Episode #216 Broadcast date: 5th December 2023 Host: Alexi Boyd, Small Business Advocate & Policy Advisor Guest: Christine Pope - Director at Australian Traditional Medicine Society ATMS is uniquely positioned to advise Government on health, women, the economy and micro business. How do they juggle multiple policy areas and represent their small businesses? Women are core to the success of the Australian health economy and the same goes for traditional medicine. The vast majority of Australian Traditional Medicine Society members are women, micro business, working from home and juggling a family, their practice and continued education. So how does ATMS' leadership best represent their members when the policy areas in which they advocate cross over social, economic and small business issues? Plus, are cross jurisdictional – Federal, State and Local Government? This is an excellent example where an association uniquely intersect between policy and small business and we're keen to hear from Christine Pope, Director of Australian Traditional Medicine Society and (because she can) the Treasurer and Director of Council of Small Business Organisations Australia ... and she still runs her own practice online and in person. PEOPLE - Tell our listeners about the work of ATMS and how you advocate for your members? How can members of ATMS (and other similar orgs) become more involved in their industry association? What sort of influence can they have? POLICY - In a practical sense, what does an organisation like ATMS do to influence government policy? What areas of policy are you focused on right now? And who do you tend to speak with? PURPOSE - What inspired each if your to take on a role in advocacy for your industry? Why do you think ATMS is well placed to advise government on health? Christine Pope is an experienced Naturopath and Nutritionist based at Elemental Health St Ives. Christine is also an experienced trainer and presenter and was Head of Nutritional Medicine and Homeopathy at Nature Care College at St Leonards from 2012-2015. More recently she has founded her own training programs “Ageing Outrageously”. Christine has over twenty years experience in her earlier career in Risk Management and Venture capital. In 2016 Christine undertook training with Dr Dale Bredesen in his protocol for Reversing Alzheimers, a detailed protocol involving up to 36 points of intervention including diet, lifestyle, hormonal balance, exercise and detoxification. Subsequently her focus in clinic has been working on healthy ageing and reducing the impact of chronic disease. Christine is a director and treasurer of The Australian Traditional Medicine Society and the Council of Small Business Organisations of Australia. (COSBOA). The Australian Traditional-Medicine Society (ATMS) is Australia's largest national professional association of natural medicine practitioners. ATMS is a multi-modality association representing around 9,000 accredited practitioners and students throughout Australia. ATMS currently accredits 20 natural medicine modalities. ATMS promotes and represents accredited practitioners of natural medicine, who are encouraged to pursue the highest ideals of professionalism in their natural medicine practice and education. How can relaxation therapy and guided imagery positively impact our physical and mental health? In this episode, Dr. Judy Lovas, an expert in relaxation therapy, joins host Dr. Lorne Brown to discuss the benefits of relaxation for mental and physical well-being. She will even be guiding listeners through a brief imagery session. She inspires professionals to engage with life from a place of curiosity, playfulness and pleasure. Jessica's deep dive into natural beauty began in 2015 in response to a very personal life upheaval. This massive change forced her to question all elements of her life, including the integrity of products she was putting into and onto her body on a daily basis. In search of new answers, Jessica immersed herself in the world of natural beauty. She studied Low Tox Living with Alexx Stuart and natural perfume-making with Nature Care College, and was fortunate to interview natural beauty founders in New York, Hong Kong, France and Australia to deepen her understanding of this important niche. In 2016, she established her first green beauty business to help other consumers make more conscious choices. Over time, her focus evolved into curating 100% botanical perfumes to replace the synthetic fragrances that desensitise and numb us in our modern world. Her passion for re-awakening the senses and forging a deeper-connection with ourselves and nature gave rise to SENSOR.I.AM. These days, as a speaker and facilitator, Jessica shares SENSOR.I.AM's message with corporate teams and wellness communities around the world. She hopes that by sharing practical wisdom and energising stories about natural beauty and wellbeing she can inspire participants to make decisions that are right for them. Jessica has 20 years of experience as a speaker/facilitator for global leaders in countries as diverse as India, Singapore and the Kingdom of Bahrain, and audiences that include the likes of IBM, EY, Westpac, CBA, Sydney and Macquarie Universities, and every level of government in every Australian state. Her depth and breadth of experience as a speaker helps her to create novel and dynamic experiences for her audiences. In fact, she is renowned for her vivacious energy and have been described as “highly intuitive, sharp and always on point". In her time away from SENSOR.I.AM, she is an enthusiastic archer, a passionate advocate of her dad's abstract art exhibition (www.mykidscoulddothat.com); co-founder of artisan chai apothecary Tiger Purrr; and a Master Trainer and Senior Facilitator with Speakers' Institute Corporate, supporting professionals around the world to uplevel their presentation and communication skills. Welcome to another great episode of Unclassified Woman! Today, I'm speaking to the lovely Kate Powe. Many people make assumptions about others without even realising it. We see a woman in her 40’s without children and assume she is selfish or too career-oriented to take time to raise children. Often there are circumstances playing out behind the scenes that we just aren’t aware of. Today’s show focuses on the problems that endometriosis can cause in terms of fertility and family-building and the need for women to have the knowledge about their bodies to make empowered choices. Imagine if we learnt about these subjects in school.... Kate Powe is an amazing naturopath based on the Northern Beaches area of Sydney, Australia. Kate has a passion for helping women balance their hormones and create happy, powerful lives. By integrating evidence-based medicine with mind-body principles and addressing underlying causes of cycle and hormonal disruption, Kate aims to support women mentally, emotionally, and physically to feel balanced and in control of their bodies, moods, and energy. Kate holds a BA in English from the University of Sydney, an Advanced Diploma of Naturopathy from Nature Care College, and a Diploma of Advanced Metaphysics from Chiara College. Kate’s a member of the Australian Traditional Medicine Society (ATMS) and regularly furthers her education in naturopathic medicine, particularly in women’s endocrinology, including thyroid disease, endometriosis, and PCOS. She has contributed to many podcasts on endometriosis and written articles on the topic for numerous magazines. She has an obsession with all things Italian and sneaks to Italy and the UK as often as possible. Who can blame her! What you’ll hear in this episode: How both circumstances and choice played into Kate’s not having children. As one of six kids, she always assumed she’d meet a partner and have children---but it just didn’t happen How she suffered from endometriosis and adenomyosis during her reproductive years, which complicated matters and impacted her fertility. The factors involved when your life doesn’t follow the assumed “pattern” and the judgments that people make about you about being selfish and career-driven. Endometriosis is a real issue and taboo topic as a condition that impacts fertility and causes painful periods. Lesions, scar tissue, and inflammation impact the reproductive organs. Adenomyosis affects the muscle wall of the uterus and contributes to painful flooding periods. These conditions can take 7-13 years to correctly diagnose because everyone assumes having painful periods is completely normal. It isn't....and women should not suffer in silence. Both endometriosis and adenomyosis are not isolated conditions, but part of a larger inflammatory process in the body that can have a genetic component. Women in the past dealt with these conditions in silence, not knowing how to treat them. They weren’t aware of what was happening in their bodies and their doctors weren’t concerned. The cost of treating endometriosis can be higher than treating diabetes! Two keys to know about endometriosis: The only way to accurately diagnose it is with surgery--not a scan; It’s a moveable disease with sometimes silent and inconsistent symptoms. Endometriosis presents a wide variety of symptoms, including heavy and long, painful periods, pain in legs, discomfort after sex, and a connection with yeast infections. Now we know that endometriosis is a systemic inflammatory condition around an immune disregulation in the peritoneal fluid and much more than simply a reproductive issue. Naturopaths look at diet and lifestyle approaches to remove inflammation, detox the liver, and keep regular bowel function A key in endometriosis treatment is to guard against toxins in personal care products. How education can revolutionise women’s health, especially now that the driving force behind the push for more information is coming from women The old treatments for endo included “go on the pill” or “get pregnant”. Not very helpful is your endometriosis is causing infertility! The way Kate deals with grief now in her 40’s differently than in her 20’s and 30’s when there were lots of questions, suffering, symptoms, and surgeries. Dealing with the implication from others that “something must be wrong with you if you don’t have children”. How Kate has dealt with awkward social scenarios and the crazy assumptions people make about your personal life. How women can assume many different roles in life around caring and nurturing that don’t involve having a biological child. The added challenges for Kate in not having a partner and not feeling supported in that way. Statistics show that by 2030 in Australia, there will be more family units without kids, a changing family dynamic, and more global consciousness around “community”. Why “the pill” is not a good choice because it shuts down the female cycle, but women aren’t taught to question its use. Most of Kate’s clients are having post-pill problems and hormonal imbalances. How Kate shows creativity in her passion with women’s health, her energy medicine, and cycle essences to help women connect with their cycles. Small Biz Matters – a half hour program each week where you can work ON your business rather than IN it.with Alexi Boyd from Boyd Office Management ServicesDate: 19 September 2017 We too often leave ourselves last on the list of priorities as a small business owner. Family, clients and even our employees are treated as more important than ourselves and it means we can end up unwell or worse still, unable to work for a long period of time. But it IS important to self-care as a business owner; for without us often there is no business, no income and for those employees, no wage! So how DO we look after ourselves when everything else seems more important? Here to help us today is Kerri Alexander a local Naturopath and Herbalist who’s come on the show to share her expertise with us to help us self care and build long term strategies for business health! Welcome to the show Kerri Alexander! Topics we’ll be covering: Broadly, your small business journey and what led you to start your own business? I have always wanted to help and nurture people, to not only help them feel better but for them to be the very best that they can be. To be strong and healthy and vibrant. I always wanted to be a naturopath, but I had no idea that I could actually go to college and formally study to do so. I thought it was just something that had to be learnt through books, experience and the pearls of women’s wisdom handed down through the generations. Anyway by the time I was about halfway through my first degree, I had developed pretty bad IBS, food intolerances, had terrible headaches and anxiety as well so I took myself off to see a naturopath. It was the best thing I ever did for myself and I found myself on a path towards healing and self-discovery. At about the same time I found that Nature Care College were having an open day, so off I went and from the moment I walked in I knew that I had finally come home. This was what I wanted to be doing and sharing with the world. Not only had I experienced the incredible changes and healing that can happen when working with a naturopath, but now I could learn all of those beautiful tools and do the same for others. Once I graduated I began practicing and have been in practice ever since. Now I work from my gorgeous little home clinic in Hornsby so that not only can my patients can take a much needed break from the busyness of the world, but so that I can also be mum and work around my family. The importance of good nutrition, regular exercise and self-care when working for yourself. I know that we hear it all the time but we really are what we eat. Hippocrates wrote “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” and if you really think about it that delicious bowl of organic muesli with chia seeds, coconut yoghurt or organic yoghurt with rockmelon or whatever fruit you chose this morning will be broken down into their macro and micronutrients of proteins, complex carbohydrates, vitamin, minerals and probiotics and transported and then incorporated into every cell in your body. So if your breakfast was either nothing or a cappuccino and a muffin, you’re probably not putting yourself in the best position that you can to begin your day. The best way and one of the simplest ways to care for yourself is to eat fresh, wholesome unprocessed foods so that you can give your body all the nutrients that you need to perform at your best. My best rule of thumb is that if your great grandmother wouldn’t recognise it as food, then you shouldn’t be eating it! And healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicated at all. It can be eggs and avocado on toast, or homemade salad with some organic chicken and balsamic dressing. Make it easy and pack yourself lunch and snacks before you head out to work. Take a thermos with a ready made herbal tea so that you can sip on it through the day. Integrate herbal medicines into your daily eating with simple things like drinking nourishing herbal teas and eating the herbs that are growing in your garden. Be sure to feed yourself, if your body and mind don’t have enough fuel then you can’t be at your best, nor can you be of service to your customers Regular exercise is essential for coping with the stress of running a small business, not only does it increase physical stamina and strength but also improves how we cope mentally and emotionally with the stress. Meditation, even if it’s only 10 minutes a day, is another excellent way to care for ourselves as small business owners and it brings clarity, focus and compassion to our day. Regular time out can be a challenge for small business owners but is essential. Boundaries and creating time outside of work to look after yourself, to defrag and just enjoy life is extremely important. It’s really easy to get caught in the the mindset of continual overwork, but all that happens is that we become less and less productive. Time out actually increases productivity. The key for long term success in both small business and life is ongoing self-care. Remember you are the most important asset that your business has! Exercise regularly, meditate or do yoga, eat wholesome foods and use herbs and nutrients to support your mind and body and make sure that you take regular time out to do things outside of your business. Connect with family, friends and nature. Have fun and laugh. Need a boost? Here are some fantastic remedies that can help support you through the highs and lows of running a small business. Taking care of your nervous system, brain and adrenal glands would be my best advice when running your own business. The demands and hours are long, and the body and mind need support. So my favourite herbal medicines, foods, nutrients and tips for taking care of your nervous system are would be Drink herbal teas that have skullcap, oats, lemon balm, chamomile and nettle in them Use the ginsengs, but carefully and best under the advice of a herbalist Take either a multivitamin or B vitamins daily Take magnesium daily Include oats in your diet Eat well and regularly Exercise My favourites for taking care of your adrenal glands would be Drink licorice, rosehip or tulsi tea Take B vitamins daily, especially B5 and B6 Take vitamin C daily Take magnesium daily Take regular time out Get a good 8 hours sleep Meditate Do yoga My favourites for taking care of your brain would be Use gingko or bacopa Take B vitamins daily Meditate daily Do yoga KTA Blurb: I support, empower and guide you to be the best and most vibrant version of yourself. We all want to live the best, fullest, happiest and most delicious lives that we can, but often times we are overwhelmed or frustrated by not being able to find the right balance or advice that best suits us or our lifestyles. This is where traditional naturopathic practice and complementary healthcare is truly strong, because the holistic viewpoint allows for needs of each person to be considered and adjusted for. That is why each prescription is different, because each person has unique physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs, and that is the exquisite beauty and complexity of what we, as naturopaths, do. I see the process as creating a unique and supportive structure around each person, almost like a piece of installation art, using the tools of herbal medicine, nutritional supplements, whole foods, flower essences, exercise, yoga and meditation. So whether you suffer from digestive issues, hormonal or menstrual difficulties or you feel stressed out, overwhelmed, anxious or depressed I will support and empower you to reconnect with your body so that you can take control of your health and wellbeing on every level.
