In this episode, Dr. Joshua Mayo, associate professor of English at Grove City College, gives his second keynote address on Cheerful Truth—the need to let go of pretentious sophistication—at the 2024 Consortium conference in Maynard, MA on July 12-13, 2024. Kepler's Consortiums provide resources and regional connections for Christian families, teachers, and educational organizations to expand the reach of classical education and foster human flourishing for generations to come. The New England Consortium of Classical Educators (NECCE) exists to point New England to the unifying Truth found in Christ and His creation, the Good of fellowship with like-minded individuals, and the Beauty reflected in great works of literature, science, and art, through teaching, conversation, and conferences. Josh Mayo is chair and associate professor of English at Grove City College, where he teaches British literature, composition, and the “Good Books” (feel free to ask him about this favorite term). He and his wife Bethany, along with their five children—Ezra, Silas, Ainley, Zoe Claire and Finn—live in Western Pennsylvania (in a technical sense). But for most of the year, Josh's soul dwells in a little fishing village in Maine called “New Harbor.” Additional relevant notes: he feels inspired by Beowulf, confused by Flannery O'Connor, and elated by Dickens.

Asset prices bubbles follow a predictable trajectory, driven by investor psychology. The final stage before the bursting is a Euphoric peak. The financial advisors at New Harbor Financial think we're on our way to such a blow-off top, but we're not quite there yet. They expect the action to get even more manic before we do. If Euphoria indeed arrives, prices will likely zoom to highs that just seem silly right now. Prepare yourself for this: you will not believe what your eyes are telling you. But also prepare for this peak to be very short-lived. Be very cautious about getting sucked in, because the gains will likely evaporate quickly once the downcycle begins. This is why bubbles are so destructive to so many people -- especially those who go "all in" at the top. WORRIED ABOUT THE MARKET? Markets Tremble As Fed Walks Back "Soft Landing" Odds | Adam Taggart & New Harbor

In continuing "higher for longer", the gravitational force weighing on the economy from current elevated interest rates will compound, resulting in "weaker for longer" economic growth. Powell knows this and re-emphasized (once again) that the full force -- i.e., the lag effect -- of the Fed's hiking & tightening regime has not yet manifested. Key takeaway: conditions are going to get harder from here, especially through next year. The Fed is expecting the labor market weaken and unemployment to rise. I agree with this forecast, though the Fed's projected 2024 unemployment rate of 4.1% seems far too rosy, IMO. We are already at 3.8% in October 2023 and, as mentioned, the lag effect has yet to substantially materialize. Consumer spending will likely slow, corp profits will likely be further pinched, layoffs will likely rise -- and if a recession hits (which I think is likely but the Fed is trying to downplay), then the employment situation gets a lot worse. Interestingly, when asked directly, Powell downplayed expectations of a "soft landing". He said it still "possible", but his Fed-speak strongly suggested that he thinks the firmness of the Fed's policies will result in a harder-landing. ************************ At Wealthion, we show you how to protect and build your wealth by learning from the world's top experts on finance and money. Longtime "bond king" Bill Gross has revealed that he is bearish right now on both stocks AND bonds. “Tops'l really is an expression of mine, and I am learning how to share my love of making charcuterie and bringing this property to life while being really honest and transparent that it's a lot.” We're in good company with Sarah Pike, owner of Tops'l Farm nestled on 83 acres in Midcoast Maine, where she, along with her crew, provides seasonal food and lodging experiences in a way that allows folks a deeper connection to themselves, their loved ones and nature. Having grown up on a farmstead in Maine, it took Sarah many years to return home and find what would become Tops'l Farm, which today hosts a sprawling campground of chic cabins and stocked camp store, a quintessential cottage and renovated farmhouse, an intimate event barn and riverside yurt for entertaining, and a variety of gardens and furry farm friends around every corner. In this episode, Sarah shares with us what “Main Life Simplified” means to her and how she hopes guests will follow their curiosity in reconnecting to nature one starry night, one blueberry at a time. Top Takeaways [1:22] From the time her parents “ruined her life” by moving to Maine to build a family homestead, Sarah quickly learned what life looked like building towards a dream. [8:05] How a weekend back at home picking apples with her family gave Sarah a desire to create that experience more often. [10:45] What about Tops'l Farm's piece of land “where farm, field and forest converge,” showcases the best of Maine. [12:40] As working parents with no prior experience, Sarah and her husband went for it and learned a lot along the way. [16:22] How Tops'l Farm was created to share the ease of spending time in nature, allowing guests to arrive as they are. [18:33] The sailing heritage behind the name Tops'l Farm, and no, it is not short for “top soil.” [23:45] From sitting around a fire, to taking a nap in a hammock, to reading a book next to the sheep, what guests can expect to experience amongst 83 acres of activities. [27:10] Exploring Midcoast Maine from its white sandy beaches and oyster farms to its inland hiking trails and vineyards. [33:30] It's those little moments in between that allow for a magical connection to this place and these people. [37:25] Expect “joyful event planning” whether for weddings, family reunions or retreats at Tops'l Farm. [39:00] What an intentional pause means for Sarah in her own life, and how she creates a space for other women to experience that as well each season. [43:40] How an entire life spent gathering people around the table led to seasonal culinary experiences pairing the best of Maine's cuisine. [54:30] Sarah and her husband are ready to get their hands dirty in the garden and their apple orchards, bringing cider into their ecosystem. Stocks To Crash 65-80% This Year, Predicts Veteran Analyst David Hunter

Stocks To Crash 65-80% This Year, Predicts Veteran Analyst David Hunterhttps://youtu.be/OGKuc3CZnLI Peak Prosperity A year ago, macro strategist David Hunter predicted a massive melt-up in financial assets, to be followed by an equally tremendous market crash. Well, he's certainly been right so far on the melt-up prediction. All major stock indices are trading at record highs. And valuations have never been more stretched. Market Cap to GDP (the famed "Buffet Indicator") has never been higher. Nor has the market's price-to-sales ratio. As analyst Sven Henrick puts it "everything has gone vertical". So, having correctly called the current melt-up, will Hunter's prediction of a 65-80% crash in prices this year also come true? Time will tell. But as extreme as that kind of drop may seem, history is on David's side. Whenever excessive debt has enabled market multiples to distort to unsustainably excessive heights -- which is what's happening now on an unprecedented level -- a painful correction to clear out the bad debt and malinvestment has always occurred. But despite his dire forecast, Hunter is more sanguine about what will follow. He predicts that those who preserve their capital through the coming crash will have the opportunity to deploy it at very advantageous terms as the next recovery begins. And like previous guests Jim Rogers and Steen Jakobsen, he sees a very bright future ahead for commodities and the companies that source, refine and deliver them to market. Which is why now, more than ever, is the time to partner with a financial advisor who understands the nature of the risks and opportunities in play, can craft an appropriate portfolio strategy for you given your needs, and apply sound risk management protection where appropriate. Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s friend is fiddler Don Stratton, and he has some original old time tunes to share with a northern flavor. We recorded this in Alan Kaufman’s cabin during the Fiddlin’ Bear festival at Lake Genero in the Poconos; making it the final installment of that day’s marathon recording session.  Most of the tunes in this episode are featured in Don’s CD with former guest of the show, Alan Kaufman, so if you want to hear the studio versions, go to peapatchmusic.com and order a copy or download the album. It’s a very good CD; there’s some really inspired stuff in there, including my new tune crush, Don’s original melody titled New Harbor, which we play in this episode.
