Play Episode Listen Later May 16, 2025 51:10

This is Episode 67 of the Consortium Podcast, an academic audio blog of Kepler Education. In this episode, Dr. Scott Postma delivers a breakout session on Mastering the Academic Essay. Fundamentally, good writing is clear thinking made visible. This means precision is the capital concern of any essay. This talk discusses how to teach students to say what they mean and say it appropriately, precisely, concisely, and vividly. This talk was given at the 2024 Consortium conference in Maynard, MA on July 12-13, 2024. Kepler's Consortiums provide resources and regional connections for Christian families, teachers, and educational organizations to expand the reach of classical education and foster human flourishing for generations to come. The New England Consortium of Classical Educators (NECCE) exists to point New England to the unifying Truth found in Christ and His creation, the Good of fellowship with like-minded individuals, and the Beauty reflected in great works of literature, science, and art, through teaching, conversation, and conferences. Dr. Scott Postma lives in the chimney of Idaho with his wife of nearly 35 years. He has four adult children and more than a handful of delightfully rambunctious grand babies. He is the president of Kepler Education, edits The Consortium: A Journal of Classical Christian Education, teaches humanities courses for high school and college students, and is a religious practitioner of the ancient art of Tsundoku. He has two forthcoming books: A Primer on Classical Christian Education and a work on Recovering Christian Humanism for a Post-Christian Culture. This is Episode 66 of the Consortium Podcast, an academic audio blog of Kepler Education. In this episode, Dr. Scott Postma delivers a keynote address titled, "Unstupiding Ourselves: The Truth About the High Calling of Classical Christian Education." His talk takes up a case made in a 2022 article by social psychologist, Jonathan Haidt, who argued that a particular change in the way social media works made the past 10 years of American life uniquely stupid. Drawing from the biblical story of the Tower of Babel, Haidt accurately describes a nation that is suddenly disoriented and unable to speak the same language or recognize the same truth. Dr. Postma argues classical Christian education is capable of unstupiding society in the generations to come by restoring a sensus communis and cultivating rational public discourse. This talk was given at the 2024 Consortium conference in Maynard, MA on July 12-13, 2024. Kepler's Consortiums provide resources and regional connections for Christian families, teachers, and educational organizations to expand the reach of classical education and foster human flourishing for generations to come. Expect things to be clunky for a while, as we lay out our various questions and concerns in our lengthy discussion of the final form of FuniRoll 2.0. Rampart Caucus
Let's Add Meaning to Party Labels

Rampart Caucus

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 2, 2021 14:18

[Text updated 9/3/2021]Lists are my favorite way to think through complex issues, share facts, obvious truths and to make suggestions. I’d love your advice to learn where I’m wrong. I’m always the first to say that I made a mistake and will listen to or read your opinion. This list seems solid to me, here goes:It's clear that America has reached an impasse that requires a collective nationwide campaign to overcome.Congress is not working for the American people and is blocking progress. The two party system is a 19th century invention that is most often said to be the problem. It's merely a means to a logic-defying end.The problem is that the two-party system has been used as a tool to devolve the Congressional chambers into a noisy, high-profile hive of self-professed do-gooders who do no good. Those prestigious rooms were once filled with ingenious humble freethinkers who represented the will of the people—American values. They are now seats filled with fist shaking warm bodies that each represent mocking and opposing ideals about the size of government. For a period of time after the Korean War in the 1950s, when the downward spiral in Congress began, moderation was maintained by Congress People from each party who were mindful of a constituency who held onto American values as the standard for making policy decisions and setting priorities. How has Congress devolved to a non-responsive institution, and how do we return to the times when moderation and true representation existed? At the very least when Congress seemed to progress frustratingly slow.American People have only had a red or blue choice at the ballot box for two centuries. The red or blue candidates are selected by a party controlled nomination process—Primaries.Laws written by the parties while in power have allowed districts to be drawn that favored one party over the other. The result of these factors is that fewer and fewer people have control over who we can vote for in a general election, and from those selected candidates, we choose a red or blue label.Any election can only result in either the red or blue party having more seats in each chamber of Congress. This doesn't match up with the true association with parties.Half of American voters are not associated with a red or blue label. The half of American voters associated with a party are split near even. Meaning 25% red and 25% blue. Not a majority. Many of those affiliated voters have expressed discontent with lack of choices, feel disaffected and say their "party no longer speaks for" them. Some voters are merely affiliated out of habit, tradition, sense of community or perhaps adopted from parents.Black Americans associate strongly with the Democratic Party from a sense of community. Unaffiliated and disaffected voters are the clear majority of Americans. The counter intuitive misalignment of the red or blue party representing less than 25% of Americans, controlling a chamber of Congress makes Congress incapable of truly representing the American values and priorities of most Americans. This gross mismatch of representation also makes it impossible to hold Congress, Congress People and Congressional leadership accountable to the American people. That lack of accountability has made it possible for our elected officials to maintain collective relationships with lobbyists, campaign contributors and party leadership for 100% of consideration and party line voting. Constituents, the public interest, has zero influence on whether policy succeeds or fails.Summarily, the party with the most seats in a chamber of Congress is the majority.- Just the fact that this skewed majority represents only 25% of Americans seems sufficient to prove that most Americans are unrepresented.- In reality though, that 25% is not even represented. The Motive for Manipulating the System- Majority representation is an illusion that gives Americans the perception that since a party is in control of the chamber, then the will of the American people is being represented.- Control of a chamber is indeed the party goal.- The party with the most seats in a chamber gives party leadership more leverage to control what policy is considered.- The perception that the will of the people is being considered is skillfully prolonged through an artful narrative designed to exaggerate the resistance from the other party.- The Consortiums of the party leaders, campaign donors, special interest, industry lobbyists and wealthy donors decide what policy to support or not support with an eye on the prize. - The Jackpot couldn’t be higher. $4 Trillion a year we send the IRS and unlimited and unquestionable borrowing. The biggest cash cow in human history. Nothing else compare.Representatives are told how to vote, or on rare occasions OUR representatives are allowed to "vote their conscience". Acting in the interest of the American people has no relationship to a Congressperson getting re-elected.Representation of a Congressperson’s constituency is no longer a consideration. It’s feasible and affordable for Congress, Parties and even individual Congress People to make an Internet page or app available to at least learn the instant yea/nay position on any topic or bill. Yet none exists.Congress People don’t have any control. Most are good people, and the call to public service is genuine. Yet, they’re caught up in a system. The system that awarded them a job and presented opportunities to prosper. They want to prolong that. Unfortunately, to continue as a Congressperson, they must NOT do the job we selected them for, to provide representation.During most of our lifetimes Congress devolved as the jackpot doubled every decade, new generations were raised in a bubble that knew nothing about the horrors that government control “for the common good” had caused. Congress is a fine-tuned cottage industry where each party works with their respective consortium, that uses every possible tool to exert control. The only services that parties provide are promises to fix America's problems.Americans cling to their party's ideals, hoping it will succeed, or at least counteract the ideals of the "other" party. The cycle continues. The cycle is endless because neither side fixes any problems. If party service is fixing problems, and Americans continue to vote on party ideals with no consideration of successful performance, then fixing problems would weaken a party's position. Parties create problems, too, then claim to be the solution. Parties are content to just not appear to lose, never concerned with winning. Parties perpetuate the thinking that a vote for our party is a vote against the evil party. There are extreme factions of each party. The extreme red and blue associates are vocal and earn the most focus from corporate news. Their affect and rancor are further fueled on social media.Conflict between the vocal extremes has been seemingly detrimental to American society.Ideals gleaned from successful efforts in the 19th and 20th century to divide people by any opposing label possible are indeed influencing Americans who have no knowledge of the misery, hopelessness and death that socialism and communism have caused. In theory and on the surface, collective societies seem perfect. The mindset though, makes it possible for good people to do terrible things in the name of the common good. The perception caused by extremes negatively labeling the "other side" makes it seem as though the other half of Americans are evil people. Nothing could be further from the truth. Most Americans are good people, just trying to live their best lives and loving each other and doing the best for their communities. It's clear that American values transcend party labels and that over half of Americans want a change to a truly representative Congress and government that serves most Americans, while preserving the rights of the few.Party labels have no relevance for the American People since none of us are truly being represented.Parties claim to represent some broad ideas of big government for the people versus a smaller government protecting our rights to succeed or fail on our own. That's what Americans hang their red or blue hats on. Reality proves otherwise. The only relevance that party labels have is to guarantee each party's consortium is near equal in strength by barring any competition and maintaining the perception that Congress is working for the will of the people because we chose Congress People by label.  The red or blue candidates that we send to Congress participate as colorful pawns that vote the party line. It's on the record and in the news for all to see.If the Republican Party stands for smaller government and fiscal responsibility, then it's the biggest failure of any association in human history. A government that establishes laws that obliges citizens to enrich the treasury by nearly $4 Trillion a yea without protecting expenditure with an innovative, fine-tuned budget, is neither small nor responsible. If the Democratic Party stands for progress by extending more government services, then why are there a record 43 million Americans living under the poverty line in underserved communities across the land? Why are millions of children going to bed hungry every night? Why is this party so intent on casually indebting future generations for Trillions of dollars? The number of impoverished people increases each year as the population grows by native birth and ungoverned immigration. The ONLY obstacle for America to move forward and cure problems is a functional Congress. We can overcome that barrier by attaching real meaning to any red or blue Congressional candidate's message.Since the ideals behind party labels are hollow promises, then what harm could it do to claim association with one or the other? A collective campaign like the one we're proposing here could set a standard that Congressional candidates could commit to and demonstrate their commitment to taking Congress back and give us true representation.A majority of red or blue Congress People must be replaced with Americans who will commit to the "affordable priorities" of most Americans, while championing the rights of the few.Replacing Congress People with humble public servants dedicated to representing Americans and American values will make Congress work for us.The effort can all be done within the current structure and rules if most Americans take into consideration the real intent of a Congressional candidate's request to serve us. Are they going to Washington DC to fill a seat, parrot their party's narrative and vote party line? Or are they going there committed to a standard that we set before each Congressional election cycle? Will they represent us?The two party system is a 19th century relic that needs a 21st century retrofit that gives party labels real meaning. The infamous sounding, "if you like your party, you can keep your party" will hopefully age well. Perhaps that hope can extend to a red and blue party with slightly different ideals about how to progress the "affordable priorities" of most Americans, preserve equality of the few and perpetuate American values into policy that helps States succeed and all Americans prosper.A final question remains that may determine what speed we proceed. Rampart Caucus is proposing a plan that will eventually arrive at a Congress that represents most Americans. How impatient have the American people become? Can we wait for an eventual solution? Or, will the rallying voice of American dissatisfaction call for an immediate no confidence overhaul of the US Congress?Time will tell.If you've read this far and you're still not convinced that voting by a red or blue party label is a pointless act, then feel free to cast your vote for a hollow and decaying ideal perpetuated by the system. Now and always your opinion will be valued by the majority. This is a public episode. Alisa DiCaprio, is the Head of Trade and Supply Chain at R3 and also facilitates a lot of R3's research. Whilst the concept of governance is familiar to many in the business community it has proven to be quite a challenge to blockchain business networks. In this podcast we discuss with Alisa, her latest research paper on the future of enterprise blockchain governance and collaboration. We cover some of the design and implementation of new business and technical models that will ensure that your blockchain journey is a success.   What is blockchain? For Alisa, blockchain is just a database but what makes it different from other databases is that it's decentralised that is global accessible. Like other digital technologies, blockchain requires the same adjustments to the global and commercial infrastructure.   Discussing the future of governance and collaboration In July 2021, Alisa published a white paper entitled “The Future of Governance and Collaboration”.  R3 began itself as a banking consortium and thus gained from the get go experience on how to build and manage consortiums.  A lot of their consultations with companies building on Corda was about how do you manage a consortium? What they realised is that when projects go wrong it often is not because of the technology but because of the decision making process that doesn't work or something with regards to governance. So, the white paper was an effort to set out the different examples of where governance has worked and all the different choices that need to be made. It sets out the policies that need to be thought of, it defines what is governance, and the questions that need be asked when building on blockchain technology.   What is governance? Governance refers to the processes and the rules that determine how a system makes decisions as it evolves. It is something that needs to be thought of as early as possible as it establishes the core capability for a sustainable business network to last from its inception to the future.   Are aspects of governance unique to blockchain? In legacy technologies there are well defined areas for adjudication when things go wrong. As blockchain is a new technology it doesn't have those well defined adjudication history nor a long lasting legal infrastructure. A lot of today's rules and regulations don't apply to blockchain, so for this reason, governance becomes very critical. It contributes to its reputation as a technology that works.   Why do blockchain projects fail due to governance? For Alisa, there are two types of characters that are early blockchain builders: Entrepreneurs Established businesses that may have an innovation fund or some money to play with Entrepreneurs who build on blockchain are usually new to the technology and are not necessarily thinking about establishing a governance structure. Established businesses which could be large companies or existing consortiums who are building on blockchain have an existing governance structure and they assume that it will work with blockchain and it doesn't always.   How do traditional business networks differ from blockchain business networks? Traditional business networks differ from blockchain business networks in three ways: Consortiums are considerably more common in the setup of blockchain business networks. The reason for that is because blockchain allows to innovate on a sector wide level rather than just a business level Blockchain business networks take a lot longer to implement than traditional business networks and also to change. Part of the reason is because it's so new that it is unclear what the regulatory infrastructure is. You may need to establish a rulebook if the legislative component does not exist. And of course, there is a business culture change with suddenly the need to operate in a decentralised way. The role of the business network operator becomes a lot more important that it is in traditiona...

Many higher education institutions are struggling with survival. While many leaders are beginning to consider closing the institution, there are other options available. Some of the most commonly talked about are mergers and acquisitions. However, forming or becoming part of a consortiums can offer important support that can help an institution survive and even thrive. One example of a consortium is TCS Education System, a non-profit system of higher education institutions. TCS stands for The Community Solution in higher education. Dr. Michael Horowitz, president of the TCS Education System, is the guest on today’s podcast. TCS’s Background When Dr. Michael Horowitz founded TCS, he was president of The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Near the start of his tenure, the institution had about 200 students and was one enrollment cycle from closing. Through concentrated effort, the institution then grew to 2,000 students. Dr. Horowitz realized during this growth process that the institution needed to allocate the responsibility for certain resources—the business side of higher education--to a bigger and broader community. The areas he wanted to delegate were that didn’t directly affect students, teaching or learning. He also believed that the lives of faculty and students would be enriched through creating a bigger community of like-minded institutions. That led to the creation of TCS. After doing initial research, Dr. Horowitz and some colleagues created a formal system in 2009 that had a common commitment to student success and community impact. This system was designed to support small- and medium-sized colleges, and enabled them to work together to do more of the work that didn’t involve students in order to lower costs, create better systems and alleviate pressure on people. This freed up energy and creativity for the colleges that they could focus on teaching and learning. Looking at his own institution’s strengths (psychology and behavioral science), Dr. Horowitz tried to invite institutions that offered logical and complimentary fields—business, health care, medicine, nursing and law. By 2010, two institutions – Pacific Oaks College and Children’s School and Santa Barbara and Ventura Colleges of Law – joined this new system. Today, TCS has six colleges involved and is in discussions with at least one college at any specific time about joining. Services Provided In today’s turbulent environment, higher education leaders should step back and think through every business element that isn’t directly tied to teaching and learning. That’s where organizations like TCS can help – by providing expertise in areas such as accounting, payments, student finance, and the back office of enrollment – things that do not directly involve teaching and academics. TCS offers these types of services. For example, in a regular college, admissions teams spend an inordinate amount of time on computers processing applications. TCS handles that part of the work so that the admissions team can spend more of its time interacting directly with prospective students. Additionally, TCS handles negotiations for the major health care insurance contracts and retirement plans. The nonprofit has a marketing team whose only clients are the system’s six colleges in the system as well as a technology team to handle technology systems on campuses. A TCS team also facilitates the logistics for global engagement and partnerships. This thoughtful delegation allows institutional leaders and faculty to focus on student success as well as those things that shouldn’t be centralized, such as fundraising and community relations. Therefore, a consortium such as TCS allows institutional leaders to spend their limited time focusing on these important issues instead of the details of a healthcare plan. Dr. Horowitz also noted that there are other existing models of shared services in other industries that higher education can learn from. For example, Zingerman’s Deli offers a model that includes a number of food companies as well as a consulting arm, Zing Train. The Secret Sauce: Community TCS’s model is unique in that institutions are part of a formally governed system. Dr. Horowitz describes the “secret sauce” as the creation of community and goodwill that is not a top-down mandate. For example, there is an academic assembly in which faculty from participating institutions come together to share best practices. They talk about how to share curriculum and courses as well as how to share dual degrees. No one tells them they have to do this; instead, they feed off the excitement of being with colleagues from across the country. Additionally, TCS brings consortium institutions’ board members together annually, whether at a TCS-sponsored event or another conference. This gives board members from different institutions a chance to come together to discuss what is working and how they are handling different issues in relation to finance and innovation while also creating a level of community. This community also offers support beyond these meetings. For example, one member institution has board members from other institutions providing valuable input on issues related to starting a new medical school. A Different Model TCS is not the type of vendor that is trying to create a profit through shared services. In fact, TCS’s assets remain at and belong to the college and the institution has seen its financial strength grow by being part of TCS. When the TCS IT or marketing team works with a college, the team feels very much part of that college’s mission. Dr. Horowitz also noted that TCS partner instutions will never have a key position go down – if one college in the consortium loses a leader, other colleges offer to share leaders to cover the gap until a new person is hired. This creates a family, team and community environment that feels unprecedented 10 years after its founding. Dr. Horowitz supports consortia arrangements, because higher education is lacking in the spirit of this type of cooperation. He sees higher education as a team spirit. Consortiums tend to get limited because leaders are taking energy to make a choice, such as sharing the parking lot, library or purchasing function. However, the real benefits are seen when institutions opt in to a model in which they are sharing the whole decision-making process, while in tandem with each college has its own operating board. Differentiating Responsibilities The college’s board is responsible for and critical to the operation of each institution. The role of the system’s board is to maintain the overall health, resources and alignment of the entire system. These are two separate and distinct functions and roles. The system’s board never takes up business that is the college’s board. Instead, TCS’s role is to facilitate the mission and strategic plan for each college. For example, one college wanted to purchase its campus. The role of the system in this situation is to assist and provide the financial acumen to do that. Then its responsibility extends to getting the best arrangement at the lowest terms for the college. However, the system board is not responsible for deciding whether the institution should take this action. A Neglected Model Many institutions seem to want to close or merge rather than join a system such as TCS’s. Dr. Horowitz believes that many institutions have a misplaced idea that their autonomy and identity are based on doing all activities (including the ones that TCS offers). They also may suffer from embarrassment about mistakes they’ve made and why they might be in dire-straights. Once boards get comfortable after joining, they see that they can look at what’s happening in other colleges within the system and learn from best practices. That creates a higher level of performance for boards and leadership. Dr. Horowitz also points to the proof of the model’s power. TCS’s members have grown academically in terms of their accreditation review and their scope and impact. Today they all have more employees—faculty and student-facing employees as opposed to accountants--as compared to when they joined the system. These institutions also have better facilities and technology and are developing new programs, modalities and outreach opportunities. Dr. Horowitz doesn’t believe that TCS should be the only non-profit model of this sort in higher education. A number of institutions, especially those that are religious institutions that have a common faith or order, could easily form this type of system. In the Wake of the Pandemic This type of model probably will come to the forefront in the post-coronavirus era since many institutions will find that they are not able to afford the backend functions. Institutions can share these types of services through working together. The sense of community also pays off in other ways in relation to surviving the pandemic. TCS has convened its member presidents as a group to discuss the best response to COVID. They also looked at policies and plans in relation to re-opening campuses. The TCS internal group also is discussing the best way to spend federal funding offered in the wake of the pandemic. Part of these funds will go to students while part will be spent institutionally. Three Recommendations for Higher Education Leaders Dr. Horowitz suggested three takeaways for higher education leaders: Adaptability is the most important thing and this crisis is amplifying that. The most effect leaders in higher education have accepted that change is a constant. Be willing to break conventional wisdom and come up with your own model and response. Leaders need to place more attention on financial health. This extends beyond balancing of the budget. Leaders need to look at institutional aspirations for distance education, new programs and additional student services to determine whether the institution has the capacity to do it. If not, leaders should be looking at other models for operating, such as an acquisition, merger or consortium. Keep your core mission in mind at all times. Are your students successful in terms of retention, graduation, and are they prepared for their future careers? Do they look back and say that they are happy that they spent time pursuing higher education? Bullet Points Many struggling higher education institutions are considering closing, mergers or acquisitions. However, joining a consortia can provide life-saving support both financially and programmatically. Institutions should consider creating or joining a consortium that has institutions with similar sizes, missions or approaches. Consortia can provide support in business functions (accounting and contracts), human resources functions (health insurance and retirement plans), admissions (inputting applications), marketing, technology, and international partnerships. Most institutions want to remain independent and aren’t used to collaborating. However, a consortia provides an opportunity to work as a team in a collaborative environment. Consortia remove some of the more mundane tasks from leaders’ agendas so they have time to focus on students, faculty, teaching, learning, fundraising and other more critical responsibilities. Consortia also can provide a sense of community where board members, leaders and faculty members can interact with other members to learn about what is happening across the system, identify best practices, and find additional ways to work together and support each other. The system’s board and the college’s board are responsible for different areas. The system would look at feasibility, capacity and contractual issues whereas the college’s board would be responsible for making the campus-level decision. This approach makes sense in terms of dealing with the financial challenges of the pandemic. It also gives leaders a forum to share ideas for re-opening and moving forward in the “new normal.” Links to Articles, Apps, or websites mentioned during the interview: TCS Education System Guests Social Media Links: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drmichaelhorowitz/   The Change Leader’s Social Media Links: Website: https://thechangeleader.com Website: https://changinghighered.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drdrumm/ Twitter: @thechangeldr Email: podcast@changinghighered.com Keywords: #Education #HigherEd #University
