See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Markets seem pretty convinced that 2024 is experiencing, in the words of US Treasury secretary Janet Yellen, a soft landing. But what if everyone is wrong? And if they are wrong, which assets are cheap right now and what will happen to the market? Steen Jacobsen, Chief Economist and Chief Investment Officer of Saxo Bank, has been pointedly asking these questions of late. And today, we're going to hear what he thinks the answers are. Saxo Bank has published the latest in its annual series of “outrageous predictions,” and among the bigger calls is that American capitalism is ending. As US debt spirals ever upwards, the federal government will have to make government bonds tax-free, according to Chief Investment Officer Steen Jakobsen, who joins this week's Merryn Talks Money to discuss the list. “The hand of government is just getting heavier and heavier,” he says.Other predictions include a global Champions League owned by Saudi Arabia, a health crisis triggered by obesity drugs and a two percent European Union wealth tax.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
MONEY FM 89.3 - Prime Time with Howie Lim, Bernard Lim & Finance Presenter JP Ong
In this special edition of Market View, we're going to let our imagination run wild and look at a series of Outrageous Predictions for 2024. Done by online trading and investment firm Saxo annually, the predictions focus on a series of unlikely but underappreciated events which, if they were to occur, would send shockwaves across financial markets. The title for this year's predictions is called “The End of the Road” – for complacency that is. Entering 2024, Saxo sees a world at an inflection point, with the familiar road of the last decade coming to an end. What that means, according to Saxo's Chief Investment Officer, Steen Jakobsen, is that the smooth road the world has travelled on since the Great Financial Crisis, with stable geopolitics, low inflation, and low interest rates has now been disrupted, and that we now see a future filled with unpredictability ahead of us. Some of his out-of-the-box predictions include: oil prices at US$150, Saudi buying the Champions League franchise, the world hit by a major health crisis due to obesity drugs, Generative AI deepfakes triggering a national security crisis, and luxury shares plunging on an EU wealth tax. On Market View, The Evening Runway's finance presenter Chua Tian Tian unpacked the predictions with Steen Jakobsen, Chief Investment Officer at Saxo.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode we discuss what we have chosen to be the best outrageous prediction for 2024 sent to us by our clients at Saxo. The outrageous prediction is simply that government abandons the GDP measure as the yardstick for progress and how to steer the economy. Given that rising GDP has been the key policy objective by developed countries since the Great Depression this would truly be an outrageous prediction. We discuss this outrageous idea and the problems with GDP in a greater macroeconomic context, with Peter Garnry and Steen Jakobsen. With COP28 drawing to a close, a draft text of the summit agreement has prompted widespread backlash from countries vulnerable to climate change. We'll also hear from Steen Jakobsen, Chief Investment Officer, Saxo Bank on their annual Outrageous Predictions for 2024. Link to slide deck: https://bit.ly/3Li0Ne9 - Markets got big jolt yesterday when Silvergate Capital announced a liquidation of the bank that has suffered from the implosion in cryptocurrencies. The event cascaded into SVB Financial (Silicon Valley Bank) plunging 60% in the main session and another 20% in extended trading as the bank has been forced to sell bonds at great losses. These moves cascaded further into other banking stocks and led equity futures lower in Asian and European trading. JD.com also announced a weaker than expected Q1 revenue outlook saying the Chinese consumer is weaker than estimated and that the extended lockdown has impacted behaviour. In today's podcast we go through the implications of the SVB Financial fallout and what it means for markets moves and especially with the large trading volumes in zero-day-to-expiry (0DTE) options. We also cover the JPY following the BoJ meeting and the moves in CHF on banking risk-off. Finally, we cover Fed Funds pricing, gold and other commodities, and next week's earnings releases which will focus on Volkswagen, BMW, Adobe, and Lennar. A warning shot has been fired yesterday. This Special Edition of the podcast features an interview with Saxo CIO Steen Jakobsen on the outlook for 2023 after a remarkably brutal year for investors in 2022 on the double whammy of bear markets in both bonds and equities. In particular, the conversation looks at the misguided optimism for next year that is ironically based on a base case of disinflation, recession and an eventual return of central bank easing, the impact of China coming back online, and where investors should focus their efforts for achieving returns in coming years. As we head closer towards the end of the year - let's have a guess on what's to come for 2023. On that note, online trading and investment specialist Saxo has released its 10 Outrageous Predictions for 2023. Titled ‘The War Economy', predictions focus on a series of underappreciated events which, if they were to occur, would send shockwaves across the financial markets as well as political and popular cultures. Saxo said these predictions are a thought experiment in considering the full extent of what is possible. It's key to note that they do come true occasionally - take Saxo's prediction of the UK's exit from the European Union for example. So, in a world where central banks and governments are set to lose their battle with inflation, what are the risks of markets becoming as outrageous as ever in 2023 and beyond? On Market View, Prime Time's finance presenter Chua Tian Tian chatted with Steen Jakobsen, Chief Investment Officer at Saxo on a series of mind-blowing predictions including an Un-Brexit referendum and a billionaire coalition for energy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Merryn talks to Steen Jakobsen of Saxo Bank about his annual "outrageous predictions" – and how reality is proving a match for anything he can come up with.
As 2021 draws to a close, futurists, political scientists, and economists are all competing in wild guesses about what the next year has in store for us. We talked to Steen Jakobsen, chief investment officer at Saxo Bank.
In Part 1 of this interview, Saxo Bank Chief Investment Office Steen Jakobsen explained why Fed Chair Jerome Powell announced this week that -- to fight the inflation it has played a central role in creating -- the Federal Reserve will accelerate its tapering program and likely hike interest rates three times in 2022. Because the Fed will suddenly now pursue a more hawkish course than the markets have been accustomed to for the past decade, Steen predicts 2022 will be a much more volatile year for stocks, bonds and other financial assets than investors are used to. Here in Part 2, Steen reveals that "diversification" will the be secret to surviving the market turmoil that is likely to ensue. He then generously breaks down how his portfolio at Saxo is allocated for the road ahead in 2022. See the YouTube Video for the charts and graphics: https://youtu.be/VDGiGFhp92Q

The Federal Reserve is finally declaring war on inflation. On Wednesday Dec 15, Fed Chair Jerome Powell announced that -- the fight the inflation it has played a central role in creating -- the Federal Reserve will accelerate its tapering program and likely hike interest rates 3x in 2022. That's a 180-degree reversal of the Fed's rampant bubble-blowing policies to date. While markets are reacting favorably so far, can they continue to do so? The key drivers of asset prices over the past decade - $trillions in stimulus, buybacks funded by dirt-cheap debt and low inflation -- are all coming to an end. Which is why Steen Jakobsen, manager of $billions in client assets at Saxo Bank, predicts 2022 will be a much more volatile year than investors are used to. And we should listen to him, as one year ago on this program he boldly predicted we'd see a surge in both inflation and commodity prices in 2021 -- and boy, was he ever right. In this new interview, Steen shares his macro outlook and top predictions for 2022 (spoiler alert: he expects inflation to run even hotter next year...) Back in December, Saxo Bank's Steen Jakobsen predicted a massive boom in commodity prices was dead ahead. Not many others shared that view back then. But, boy, was he ever right. Commodity prices have exploded in the five months since that interview was recorded. And more important, in his eyes we ain't seen nothin' yet. He predicts commodity prices are going to continue heading higher, a LOT higher, from here. See the YouTube Video for the charts and graphics: https://youtu.be/wVa5YI81B1c

Back in December, Saxo Bank's Steen Jakobsen predicted a massive boom in commodity prices was dead ahead.

Stocks To Crash 65-80% This Year, Predicts Veteran Analyst David Hunter https://youtu.be/OGKuc3CZnLI Peak Prosperity A year ago, macro strategist David Hunter predicted a massive melt-up in financial assets, to be followed by an equally tremendous market crash. Well, he's certainly been right so far on the melt-up prediction. All major stock indices are trading at record highs. And valuations have never been more stretched. Market Cap to GDP (the famed "Buffet Indicator") has never been higher. Nor has the market's price-to-sales ratio. As analyst Sven Henrick puts it "everything has gone vertical". So, having correctly called the current melt-up, will Hunter's prediction of a 65-80% crash in prices this year also come true? Time will tell. But as extreme as that kind of drop may seem, history is on David's side. Whenever excessive debt has enabled market multiples to distort to unsustainably excessive heights -- which is what's happening now on an unprecedented level -- a painful correction to clear out the bad debt and malinvestment has always occurred. But despite his dire forecast, Hunter is more sanguine about what will follow. He predicts that those who preserve their capital through the coming crash will have the opportunity to deploy it at very advantageous terms as the next recovery begins. And like previous guests Jim Rogers and Steen Jakobsen, he sees a very bright future ahead for commodities and the companies that source, refine and deliver them to market. Which is why now, more than ever, is the time to partner with a financial advisor who understands the nature of the risks and opportunities in play, can craft an appropriate portfolio strategy for you given your needs, and apply sound risk management protection where appropriate.
