The Year 2015 in Gaming - The Dosage Podcast, Ep. 130 #2015inGaming #Podcast #2015 The year 2015 saw releases of numerous video games as well as a follow-up to Nintendo's portable 3DS console, the New Nintendo 3DS. Top-rated games originally released in 2015 included Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Bloodborne, Undertale, and Fallout 4. Sales of video games in 2015 reached $61 billion, according to analysis firm SuperData, an 8% increase from 2014. Of this, the largest sector was in computer game sales and subscription services, accounting for $32 billion. Mobile games revenues were at $25.1 billion, a 10% increase from 2014. Digital sales on consoles made up the remaining $4 billion. In the United States, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) and the NPD Group estimated total video game market revenues at $23.5 billion, a 5% increase from 2014. Of this, the total software market was $16.5 billion, with the NPD Group estimating retail sales subset at $13.1 billion. The ESA reported that there were 2,457 companies in the United States involved in developing or publishing video games that directly supported 65,678 workers (37,122 in developing, 28,556 in publishing) with about another 154,000 indirectly supporting the industry, such as through contracting or video game journalism. The total contribution to the US's gross national product from the industry was $11.7 billion. In the United Kingdom, the total video game market was valued at nearly GB£4.2 billion, according to figures from Ukie and MCV. The largest segments were in digital software (£1.2 billion) and mobile games (£664 million), while sales of consoles dropped to £689 million. Pokemon hit a stride with games on the DS to the 3DS. The Nintendo 2DS was made for people to have the most affordable option on the market, but it was pretty ugly. The "New Nintendo 3DS," was a major improvement in tech and a huge dropoff for the marketing department. If Nintendo had tried to do more to connect the Wii U and the 3DS the U would have had much greater success. Of the few accessories, the Circle Pad Pro was an amazing anomaly, ugly yet criminally neglected. We'll greatly miss the services that will go missing without the 3DS: Virtual Console, Internet Browser, Mii Plaza, and Spot Pass. This week on The Free Cheese, we just want to be heard! Joe, Marc, and Dashe gather in a conversation about the classic days of Castlevania and Final Fantasy. We learn about Dashe's gaming history and the first game that he ever beat. We talk about the two very different camps of Final Fantasy fans and how Marc walks the line in between them. We go a little further into some of the Nintendo Direct announcements, if only to create new conspiracy theories to flood the internet with. What have we already seen from Nintendo that points toward NX? Why are there mobile homes in Animal Crossing and why don't we know anything about the mobile game yet? Dashe brings some strong insight into No Man's Sky, as someone who entered it without giving into the negativity surrounding it. We try to figure out how a developer can release a huge title and then go completely dark. We then remember why we hate MMORPGs. Marc wants pants and Marc wants shoes. He wants them separate from one another but he can't get that in Rock Band 4. After finding a face that sort of works, he tries to fight everything in Mystical Ninja, what the big deal is with Paragon, and figures out how to quickly spend too much real money on pretend badges. Joe uses his New Nintendo 3DS to continue revisiting his 3DS library in a new way, specifically Mario Kart 7, where 3D finally makes a difference. The heart machine continues in Hyper Light Drifter as we make a weird comparison that kind of works.

This week on The Free Cheese, we talk directly to you about Nintendo. Kyle and Joe close out our month of Metroid coverage with a conversation about Metroid: Zero Mission. We talk about our experience with the game, why every Metroid game should be like this one, and why it's okay that Nintendo is a little strict with the use of its IP. After a week, Kyle has explored and understands a bit more of No Man's Sky, yet he still is not convinced the game is anything more than he originally thought it to be. Without knowing how much longer he'll stay with it, Kyle still found himself terrified when he landed on a planet that was filled with water and gave him flashbacks to the N64... Joe bought his New Nintendo 3DS and used it to revisit some old classics and see how they fare. Impressed with how quickly Super Smash Bros. booted up, he put emulation to the test by returning to EarthBound on the small screen. As naturally as it was to return to it, he is just as eager to race around in Mario Kart 7 again. We highlight a story about a lawyer who left his practice to make an RPG where everyone dies. We throw out some questions for another edition of lightning round.  Finally, we recap everything from today's Nintendo Direct presentation and share the parts we are most excited about (or not so excited about).

The one where the gang discusses the deep moral and ethical debates spawned by the release of No Mans Sky.  Cole bought a New Nintendo 3DS and tells us about the stack of games she's about to dive into.  Cole also gives us her regular update on Mobile gaming.  Steve and Kyle try to explain Steves fighting game skills after Pat B. suffered yet another thrashing from Steve at Galloping Ghost arcade and Kyle makes an offer to those looking to sharpen their fighting game skills and so, so  much more. This week on The Free Cheese, Marc and Joe learn to love together forever. While Kyle is away, Marc and Joe talk about the cancellation of Metroid Dread. The lost game from 2005 remains a mystery but as we look back, we try to understand what it may have meant canonically for the series. Marc sees red in Doom and sees nothing inside of Metroid Prime: Blast Ball. Joe remains unimpressed with the 2.5D Bloodstained, but gets super spooked in the midst of Metroid Prime. We talk about the upcoming PS4 revision and what it might mean, as well as new information on the New Nintendo 3DS in North America. We share the games that we wish would've never been cancelled and we take a moment to remember someone who shaped the worlds of Square Enix. 

We made the trip to Hamilton Ontario this year for ConBravo! Nintendo announces some new bundles for all the collectors out there, but are some of them just too late to the game? We're getting a New Nintendo 3DS bundle with Super Mario 3D Land pre loaded and 2 pretty sweet faceplates for $149.99 -- which is pretty solid. BUT, we are also getting 5 new amiibo bundles, which seem pretty silly. Old game, bundled with old amiibo for $39.99 -- which isn't a terrible price, but still. Nintendo announced an NES Classic Edition a while back, and we are finally talking about it. 30 games and 1 controller. $59.99 -- Releasing 11/11 Pokemon GO is huge, but is Nintendo holding out on the Pokemon GO Plus accessory too long? Will the hype be over before the wearable is even available. Also, it's $35 and sold out on Amazon. Pokemon dropped a bomb on us with new Alola region variations of some of our favorite Pokemon! The Nintendo NX has some new rumors leaking out suggesting a September reveal for a March 2017 launch. 16-bit goodness Sonic Mania was announced as well as a very dark looking game titled "Project Sonic 2017" were both announced. Let's be honest, they say it isn't Generations 2 ... but it's basically Generations 2. At least from the images we've seen. The XBox One S 2 TB version is here for all to enjoy. But if you don't have a 4K TV, is there really that much to enjoy? Will the power dynamic between XBox and Playstation change any with the upcoming releases of the Scorpio and Neo systems? Can the Scorpio sway the long time Playstation fans, or will the Neo pull the XBox fans over to Sony? Are there really any good co-op games out there for the PS4? Sure, if you are interested in online multiplayer or co-op ... but what about those old school people that still want to sit on the couch and play a game with friends? There aren't that many good couch co-op games left anymore, and that is really sad.
