Rob discusses a troubling case involving a landlord, Nick Lyons, who faces a £10,000 bill after his rental property in South London was turned into a cannabis farm by tenants who sublet the property without his consent. He highlights the challenges landlords face in the current rental market, particularly regarding tenant protections and the importance of regular property inspections. KEY TAKEAWAYS Landlords should ensure that regular property inspections are conducted, whether managed personally or through an agent. This helps identify potential issues before they escalate. It's crucial for landlords to maintain open lines of communication with their property management agents. If inspections are being denied or not conducted, landlords should be informed promptly to address the situation. Tenants have the right to peaceful enjoyment of their property, which includes the ability to refuse entry for valid reasons. Landlords must be aware of these rights and navigate them carefully. Familiarity with the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985, particularly Section 11, is essential. This law allows landlords to enter properties with 24 hours written notice for essential repairs or in emergencies, but does not permit entry solely based on suspicion of illegal activity. BEST MOMENTS "The tenant always had an excuse, and because of his good track record, they didn't push further." "Had this been done earlier, we might have discovered the problem before it escalated." "It's important to have good systems and processes in place to ensure that regular inspections are being carried out." "If a landlord or managing agent suspects illegal activity, this does not on its own warrant entry without permission." Long before the internet and YouTube taught us how to tie knots and flies, anglers relied on books and magazines to learn the craft of fishing. Nick Lyons, now 92, spread the love of fishing through his words and the books he published via Lyons Press and other imprints he worked under. Throughout his career he worked with a long list of well-known writers including Lefty Kreh, Mark Sosin, Lee Wulf, Tom Rosenbauer and many more. Lyons published a Hemingway anthology and worked closely with Jack Hemingway. He's fished many of the world's best trout streams and had plenty of time to reflect on life, family and the pull of a fish. Subscribe to Anglers Journal magazine at AnglersJournal.com

Tom's written about everything from the issues facing brown trout in the Grand Canyon to a wild story involving a dad and daughter busted by the FBI for selling synthetic weed. They even sued Tom for a quarter of a million dollars. Strap on the seatbelt, grab your beverage, and get comfortable. Let's get into this one with Tom Bie! Episode Chapters with Tom Bie on the Drake Magazine  02:26 - We get an update on Tom and The Drake Magazine since our last episode with him in October 2020. We also dive into the challenges facing journalism today. 07:52 - Tom praises Monte Burke for his storytelling skills and how he lets people share their stories. He also talks about Monte's latest work on Nick Lyons. 14:24 - Tom also highlights Jon Krakauer, known for his gripping books like Into the Wild. Krakauer's reporting on a Yosemite climber who committed serious crimes is a prime example of his courage and commitment to justice. 19:16 - We chat about the fish removal in the Grand Canyon. The issue revolves around removing brown trout to protect the native humpback chub. Tom highlights how this problem mirrors other areas, like Yellowstone. He explains that while protecting native species is important, it's tough when their removal affects popular sport fish that have been around for decades. There's also a bounty program where guides earn money for killing brown trout, which has led to the killing of over 6,000 fish. 35:49 - We discuss how changes in river flow and dam operations have impacted brown trout in the Grand Canyon. Starting around 2014, increased flow rates and historic high flows allowed more brown trout to migrate. 47:56 - We talk about ways to help with the fishing issues in the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone. Tom suggests people contact the National Park Service to express that killing sport fish might not be the best solution. Inside the Drake Magazine 54:33 - Tom shares that he always includes at least one in-depth reported piece per issue of the Drake Magazine. While essays are popular with readers, he often gets way more essays than actual reporting stories. Tom also explains that good reporting involves more than just writing; it needs interviews and research. He advises aspiring writers to use quotes from real conversations to improve their stories. 1:02:00 - Tom shares a crazy story about a father and daughter from Texas who got into big trouble for selling synthetic weed. Tom even got sued for talking about it on a podcast! The family also bought the Deneki lodges in Alaska, which was part of the money laundering charges. Show Notes:  https://wetflyswing.com/644

WSJ REVIEW: Fire in the Straw: Notes on Inventing a Life by Nick Lyons NY POST LOVES NICK LYONS NEW BOOK! "I love Nick Lyons's books. Every sentence is so full and ripe." —Ted Hughes, former Poet Laureate to Queen Elizabeth II FIRE IN THE STRAW is the witty and deeply felt memoir of Nick Lyons, a man with an intrepid desire to reinvent himself—which he does, over and over. Nick Lyons shape shifts from reluctant student and graduate of the Wharton School, to English Professor, to husband of a fiercely committed painter, to ghost writer, to famous fly fisherman and award-winning author, to father and then grandfather, to Executive Editor at a large book publishing company, and finally to founder and publisher of his own successful independent press.. Written with the same warm and earthy voice that has enthralled tens of thousands of fly-fishing readers, Nick weaves the disparate chapters of his life: from the moment his widowed mother drops him off at a grim boarding school at the age of five, where he spends three lonely and confusing years; to his love of basketball and pride playing for Penn; to the tumultuous period, in the army and after, when he found and was transformed by literature; to his marriage to Mari, his great love and anchor of his life. Suddenly, with a PhD in hand and four children, Nick embarks on a complex and thrilling ride, juggling family, fishing, teaching, writing, and publishing, the wolf always at his door. Against all odds, The Lyons Press survives, his children prosper, his wife's art flourishes, and his books and articles make him a household name. Fire in the Straw is a love story, a confessional, and a beautiful big-hearted memoir. This week, it was my great pleasure to interview Nick Lyons, who I consider to be the godfather of modern fly-fishing books. Nick has edited and published books by some of our most famous fly anglers--Lee and Joan Wulff, Lefty Kreh, Dave Whitlock, and Swisher and Richards. He was also my first editor and I have so much to thank him for. Nick tells stories of the early days of fly-fishing books--his successes and failures and his journey through the past half-century of fly fishing. In the Fly Box this week, we have some great questions, including: When fishing an in-line dropper, I have problems with the dropper slipping off my upper hook. How can I fix this? I want to fish flies for sauger along the bottom. What type of fly should I use? My hunter friend has offered me some duck and goose feathers. What feathers should I ask him to keep? Any tips on catching stocked trout in a pond? What line would you recommend for trolling from a float tube? Why is trout fishing more productive in Montana than in North Carolina? Do you think those big "American-type" articulated streamers will work in Finland? What kind of stream fish can I catch with a fly rod in northern Alabama? A tip on finding trout at the mouth of cold-water feeder streams in summer. Are "planted" and "stocked" trout streams the same thing? And do stocked trout ever reproduce naturally? Can I attach backing to a welded loop with just a clinch knot?

We recorded 85-year-old Nick Lyons at the Jerry Bartlett Angling Collection in Phoenicia, NY, as part of its "Sporting Legends of The Catskills" series. From that event: "Nick began to fish as a child during summers at the Laurel House in Haines Falls, when the hotel was owned by his grandfather. He went on to wet a line just about everywhere he could find water — from Steeplechase Pier in Brooklyn to the Catskill Mountains, and beyond. Nick is widely known for his popular “Seasonable Angler” column in Fly Fisherman Magazine, which he wrote for decades. In articles for Fly Fisherman and other publications, and in more than a dozen books, he chonicled his fishing adventures all over the world. Meanwhile, he pursued a busy life as an English professor at Hunter College and as a book publisher. Nick’s late wife Mari was an accomplished artist who accompanied Nick on many of his journeys. Her watercolors and sketches appear in all of his later books." Painting courtesy Mari Lyons, from Nick's well-known book “Spring Creek.” Thanks to Beth Waterman and the Jerry Bartlett Angling Collection; and to our sponsor, the Catskill Mountains Scenic Byway. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/kaatscast/support

Nick Lyons is a lifelong fisherman and has also written 20 highly regarded books about his passion for the outdoors and fly fishing, has edited and published many more, and Nick also for 25 years wrote the Seasonable Angler column for “Fly Fisherman” magazine. Nick’s memoir, Spring Creek, is a love letter to a creek in Montana. In it,  Nick writes that he aims for his writing “to be rich enough to catch some of the stillness, complexity, joy, fierce intensity, frustration, practicality, hilarity, fascination, [and] satisfaction” that he finds in fly fishing. If you read anything that Nick has written, you will enjoy that richness.  We discuss on the podcast the Esopus Creek, the Amawalk, the East Branch of the Croton, the Odell in Montana, the Bourne in the U.K. and the rivers in New Zealand, as well as the books and authors Nick loves. We also talk about fly selection, fly tiers and solitude on the river.

Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/72 Rachel Finn put together one of my favorite episodes of the year.  I will be honest and tell you that this isn't a tips and tricks episode.  Instead, you get to hear what the hang is all about, Yale, sports and plenty of chat about art and life. Rachel surpasses the record for adult language in one episode.  Keep track and leave a comment below with the total number of 4 letter words! Show Sponsors The Wet Fly Swing Members Society (https://wetflyswing.com/members) Show Notes with Rachel Finn (Update links: https://wetflyswing.com/72) Denny Rickards was on the podcast in episode 64 to cover stillwater fishing.  Denny was a pro level athlete similar to Rachel Finn. Rachel clarifies Lacross and the sticks and tools involved in Lacross. The Complete Angler by Izzak Walton had a big impact on Rachel.  Walton was also all about the hang. We talk about her family, the Hungry Trout and how she became the head guide and now has been doing it for 25 years. April Vokey's blog post - So, You want to be a fishing guide: Part 1.53:00 - Nick Lyons was around the old tackle shop that Rachel discussed in the old store in New York. Teton Tioga Reels were the first two companies that helped to get Rachel out on the show circuit. We find out which is her favorite cigar.  It's the Punch Rothschild Double Maduro. The old Who or the Old Rolling Stones were big for Rachel.  Here is one of my favorite Songs by the stones.  And here is some more Grateful Dead. The Girdle Bug and the Ausable Bomber are two of her goto flies. The American Museum of Fly Fishing is an important place to support.  And if I get Yvon Chouinard on the podcast, you'll know that I will be obtaining a big goal for the show. You can connect with Rachel on Instagram @rfinn.   Conclusion with Rachel Finn Dude, was that amazing or what?  I know I've said it before, but this was my favorite episode ever.  We barely talked about fishing tips yet this was the bomb.  We argue about Grease the Musical, Sporting events and Our favorite bands.Leave a comment below for your favorite band or your favorite beverage after fishing. Today’s guest is a very talented children’s book illustrator, Simona Ceccarelli. She is half British, half Italian, half Swiss and more than a quarter French. She lives in Switzerland with her husband and two children, but what I find most interesting about Simona is that she wasn’t always in the creative field. In fact, Simona spent most of her life working as a research scientist. Simona switched careers back in 2013 and never looked back. She is a great example that it is never too late to reinvent yourself. No matter how old you are or what career you’re in. It is possible! I also interviewed several other guests on this podcast that share a similar path with Simona. You may remember David Ariew from episode 56. He went From Neuroscience to Motion Graphics, then Ryan Summers episode 50, Ryan switched from science to art, Lloyd Alvarez episode 42, he was pre-med before he switched to Motion Graphics and Nick Lyons episode 45, he switched from History Major to Motion Graphics. These talented artists are now doing what they love all because they followed their heart. Nothing stopped them from pursuing their dreams and nothing should stop you. Our past guest Scott Buoncristiano said it best in episode 51. He said: “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, but the second best time is today.” and Scott was another late bloomer. He didn’t start drawing until he was 36 years old and now he is a very busy freelance illustrator in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. All that to say that It is never too late to follow your dreams.
