Kevin Roth's journey into the world of folk music began at the tender age of thirteen when he first picked up the dulcimer. Little did he know that this humble beginning would lead to a remarkable career filled with international acclaim. By the age of sixteen, Roth had already recorded his debut album for Folkways / Smithsonian Folkways Records, marking the start of his meteoric rise to fame. Over the next decade, he solidified his place as a prominent folk singer and dulcimer player, recording a total of ten albums with the label. Notably, his performance of the theme song for the PBS-TV children's show Shining Time Station in 1984 catapulted him into a much larger market, expanding his reach and influence. Collaborating with Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul & Mary further entrenched Roth in American folk history, cementing his legacy as a musician who has graced concert stages worldwide, appeared at prestigious events such as the White House, and left an indelible mark on the world of folk music. The United States has traditionally been a safe haven for refugees the world over. Judy Carmichael interviews Noel Paul Stookey
Here's a reboot of a fan favorite: Noel Paul Stookey, the Paul of Peter, Paul & Mary. He not only rode the folk wave of the early 1960s with such indelible songs like "Puff the Magic Dragon," "If I Had a Hammer" and helping popularize a young Minnesotan bard who went by the stage name of Bob Dylan, but helped created it. He shares the iconic trio's origin story as well as his own, and the many memories of a life, well lived, in music. Peter, Paul & Mary's long, legendary career was cut short with Mary Travers' tragic death in 2009, but their place in the cultural zeitgeist is eternal. Noel, a part-time Ojai resident, joins us to talk about his new album, "Fazz: Now & Then" and to reflect on the experience of collaborating with fellow musicians during the pandemic to create this nuanced, wide-ranging collection of 20 original songs with talented musicians such as Kent Palmer, Paul Winter, Paul Sullivan, David LaPlante and Edward Mottau. Fazz, as Noel explains, was christened by Paul Desmond of the Dave Brubeck Quartet to explain Peter, Paul & Mary's distinct fusion of jazz and folk. Noel picks up the resident Ojai podcast guitar (be still, my heart) to explain the shadings of alternate chord structures that inform much of the color of the album, as illustrated by the A Major, and the A Major 7th, its "smoky, mysterious cousin." Noel talks about writing "The Wedding Song: There is Love" - for Peter Yarrow's wedding, and his reluctance to perform it again until urged by Peter, and how it has made many, if not most, of the lists of most beautiful songs of all time, right up there with fellow Ojai resident Amanda McBroom's "The Rose." He also discusses his Christian faith and the epiphany he had at age 30 after a decade of fame, and the toll it took on his well-being. There's relevant folk music news: Noel's good friend John McCutcheon just released “Ukraine Now.” We did not talk about Ron DeSantis' fading aspirations, the Buffalo Bills abysmal overtime record or the enduring mystery of who ordered the hit on Tupac Shakur.

Kevin Roth began to play the dulcimer in 1972 at the age of thirteen and is now known for his dulcimer music for meditation. Back at age sixteen, he recorded his first album which immediately launched him into international fame. Between 1974 and 1984, Roth recorded ten albums, establishing himself as a prominent folk singer and dulcimer player. In 1984, Roth performed the theme to the PBS-TV children's show Shining Time Station. That project brought him to another new and much larger market. His friendship and collaboration in 2006 with Noel Paul Stookey, of the legendary folk trio Peter, Paul & Mary, further cemented Roth in American folk history. His career took him to concert and symphony stages around the world, to festivals, radio, television shows, and two appearances at the White House. Roth now guides individuals and groups in discovering what truly matters to them, how to accomplish their goals, and how handling stress is an essential factor in a healthy life. He mentioned how normal feelings like anger and frustration come up for everyone, but he doesn't let them control him. He compares these feelings to bubbles that pop quickly. He believes that these feelings aren't real and that he doesn't need to get stuck in them. Kevin explained that when people believe their thoughts, they can suffer, even in simple situations like waiting in line for coffee. He gave an example of someone cutting in line. He pointed out that maybe they're just waiting for coffee and not intentionally trying to skip the line. Mindfulness, according to Kevin, is recognizing that these thoughts come and go, and we don't have to give them too much importance. Thoughts might be there one moment and gone the next. He shared a story about a person who disliked her boss and had to talk to her on the computer for a short time every Monday. Kevin helped her realize that she only spent a small part of her workweek dealing with her boss, but she was carrying negative feelings about her all the time. Kevin found it surprising how we do these things without even realizing it. He believes that mindfulness can help us become aware of our thoughts and emotions and not let them control our feelings and actions. Thoughts on Breathing My advice is to just keep breathing; just keep doing it. I don't do any breathwork because I don't personally need it. Judy Carmichael interviews Noel Paul Stookey
The Squid and The Whale).
Noel Paul Stookey is perhaps better known as Paul of the legendary trio “Peter, Paul And Mary”. They blazed a path in the 1960s and beyond blending folk music and social activism with memorable songs and wonderful harmonies, setting a level of accomplishment that has rarely been equaled. They earned six Top 10 hits - including "Blowin In The Wind" and "Leaving On A Jet Plane" - and 8 Gold albums, quite remarkable for a folk group.Noel and I discuss the folk scene in Greenwich Village in the early 60s and all the remarkable future stars who were there including Bob Dylan and Tom Paxton, how PP&M burst on the scene with their first album, their participation in the 1963 March On Washington led by Dr. Martin Luther King, and much more including Noel's long and highly regarded solo career post-PP&M. Kevin Roth began to play the dulcimer in 1972 at the old age of thirteen, and at sixteen recorded his first album for Folkways / Smithsonian Folkways Records, which immediately launched him into international fame. Between 1974 and 1984 Roth recorded ten albums with this label, establishing himself as a prominent folk singer and dulcimer player. In 1984, Roth performed the theme to the PBS-TV children's show Shining Time Station, which brought him to another new and much larger market. Then came a sudden diagnosis of Melanoma, and it changed his life. He had a choice to accept a death sentence or to live. He chose life. Through adapting and combining techniques from his music and performance practice with others that he researched, he found a simple and powerful method to change how he lived. Roth discovered how to not just survive but to become truly happy and thrive. Roth now guides individuals and groups in the discovery of what really matters to them, how to accomplish their goals, and how handling stress is an essential factor in a healthy life. He even incorporated the dulcimer into his meditations!Find Kevin Roth at: https://kevinroth.org/Subscribe to the Playful Humans podcast in your favorite podcast app: https://podfollow.com/playfulhumans/Support the show

Noel Paul Stookey, the Paul of Peter, Paul & Mary, not only rode the folk wave of the early 1960s with such indelible songs like "Puff the Magic Dragon," "If I Had a Hammer" and helping popularize a young Minnesotan bard who went by the stage name of Bob Dylan, but helped created it. He shares the iconic trio's origin story as well as his own, and the many memories of a life, well lived, in music. Peter, Paul & Mary's long, legendary career was cut short with Mary Travers' tragic death in 2009, but their place in the cultural zeitgeist is eternal. Noel, a part-time Ojai resident, joins us to talk about his new album, "Fazz: Now & Then" and to reflect on the experience of collaborating with fellow musicians during the pandemic to create this nuanced, wide-ranging collection of 20 original songs with talented musicians such as Kent Palmer, Paul Sullivan, David LaPlante and Edward Mottau. We did not talk about whirling dervishes, James Beard or "The Slap Heard 'Round the World."
NOEL PAUL STOOKEY has enjoyed an extraordinary career that began as the “Paul” of the seminal 1960s folk trio Peter, Paul & Mary. Their signature vocal harmonies provided the soundtrack to a generation. At age 84 the legendary singer has released his latest album. I caught up with him. If you grew up in Australia during the early 70's you're sure to remember THE FLYING CIRCUS. A country, folk-rock band that really hit it big with the teenyboppers. I tracked down founder, COLIN WALKER and discovered a man still sad that Flying Circus weren't able to shake their bubblegum image. Guitarist, JIMMY RYAN has played with and written for some of the biggest names in rock n roll and his book is filled with stories about Carly Simon, Paul McCartney, Jim Croce and many more. It's called Behind: The Autobiography of a Musical Shapeshifter. Jimmy shares stories. Join me won't you? “Jazz: Now & Then” Noel Paul Stookey became a household name as the Paul part of the Peter Paul and Mary equation. The landmark folk trio formed in New York in the '60s and went on to lead the American folk music revival with massive hits like If I Had A Hammer, Puff The Magic Dragon, and Leaving On A Jet Plane. Hammer, of course was written by Pete Seeger and Jet Plane John Denver, but that was the thing about Peter Paul and Mary—they were incredible interpreters of American song. Their readings of Dylan tracks like Blowin' in the Wind, and the Times They Are A Changin' are further evidence that they could not only interpret but in many ways make those songs their own in the process. Peter Paul and Mary put out nearly twenty albums in their career, including 2003's In These Times and the band ceased to be when Mary Travers passed away in 2009. As for Stookey, he remains a pretty active guy both in and out of music. From founding the non-profit Music To Life with his daughter to producing artists like Dave Mallet and Gordon Bok to playing at Dartmouth in honor of Martin Luther King Day, Stookey is still out there, doing the work. And speaking of work, his new album has just hit shelves. Titled Fazz: Now & Then, the staggering 20-track collection mixes new compositions with folk, jazz, gospel, classical, and world music. It's been germinating in Stookey's head for almost 25 years and it was well worth the wait. Filled with folky precision, poetic finesse and clever wordplay, Fazz: Now & Then is a refreshing blast of musical fusion commandeered by one of the greatest songwriters in American Music. A singer, a father, a husband, an artist and and an activist, Stookey is the real deal. www.noelpaulstookey.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers: Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: Email: Editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Kevin Roth had a life-changing epiphany, packed up and moved to an idyllic place on the beach, and hung out a shingle calling himself a life coach. Oh, you say you've heard this story before? Wait, hear me out. Kevin was a prominent folk singer who played with Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul, and Mary, and wrote the theme song for the PBS children's show, Shining Time Station. He recorded more than a dozen albums, and performed at the White House and at festivals all over the world. Then came a diagnosis of stage 3 melanoma and being told he had only a few years to live. Kevin stubbornly took control of his own treatment and has come out successfully on the other side. It taught him how to truly thrive in his life. Part of that was moving from Kansas to San Diego. I think that would improve anyone's outlook, you know? Kevin found and now teaches ways to remove and replace the negatives in his and others' lives – similar to the lessons espoused by our friends at Addict to Athlete. Kevin's vehicle though is music. Kevin learned to play the dulcimer, a stringed instrument with a very peaceful, melodic sound. It has a very strong de-stressing effect and he has an intriguing program with it called dulcimeditation. Kevin works with clients one-on-one to help them change their lives in amazing ways. He also does group sessions, seminars, and he offers on his Web site a Teachable Course called Creating a Life of Meaning and Abundance. I think you'll hear in our conversation that Kevin is just a down-to-Earth guy very much at peace and wanting to share with others his methods of de-stressing, and enabling them to better goal-set and re-direct their trajectories so they can enjoy a more fulfilling life experience. I know that may sound like a bunch of hippie mumbo-jumbo, but he comes across as the kind of guy you could meet one day at the bar and realize you've walked away a lot richer for having had the experience. When I listen to many speeches, seminars, Ted Talks, etc., I always hope to walk away with that one golden nugget. I think that if you pay close attention to Kevin here, you'll likely gain several that will inspire you. Please consider donating to help Boulder County fire victims relief:https://www.commfound.org/grants/get-grant/Boulder-County-Wildfire-FundKevin Rothkevinroth.org@gmail.com619-794-8599www.kevinroth.orgwww.kevinrothmusic.comInstagram @happysoulsurfer_kevinrothBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor

“Once you're convinced that the root of all of us living creatures is love, then you're always looking for the redemptive solutions that we may have." Beloved singer/songwriter Noel Paul Stookey is here. Initially well-known as a member of the folk music trio Peter, Paul and Mary, he joins Daniel for a wide-ranging conversation about songwriting, music, American culture, and much more. At age 83, he is still singing, playing guitar, and bringing joy-- and maybe some peace-- to people the country over. Support Talking Beats with Daniel Lelchuk. Singer/songwriter Noel Paul Stookey has been altering both the musical and ethical landscape of this country and the world for decades—both as the “Paul” of the legendary Peter, Paul and Mary and as an independent musician who passionately believes in bringing the spiritual into the practice of daily life. Funny, irreverently reverent, thoughtful, compassionately passionate, Stookey's voice is known all across this land: from the “Wedding Song” to “In These Times.” Most recently Noel's musical political commentary entitled IMPEACHABLE (based on the familiar melody of UNFORGETTABLE) has reached viral status with the on-line community, yielding over a million facebook/youtube views. While acknowledging his history and the meaningful association with Peter and Mary - the trio perhaps best known for its blend of modern folk music and social activism, rallying support for safe energy, peace and civil rights at some of the most iconic events in our history—including the 1963 March on Washington with Martin Luther King, Noel Paul has stepped beyond the nostalgia of the folk era. Nearly $2 million, earned from Noel's now-classic “Wedding Song,” were used to fund the work of other socially responsible artists, which inspired Noel, along with his daughter Liz Stookey Sunde, to launch MusicToLife in 2001. The nonprofit has introduced groundbreaking ways to bring music to life for social change through technology, entertainment, artist collaboration and education. Whether judged by the subject matter of his current concert and recorded repertoire or by virtue of his active involvement with the MusicToLife initiative (www.musictolife.org) linking music fans to the expression of contemporary concerns via many different artists and musical genres, Stookey's current musical outlook continues to be fresh, optimistic and encouraging.

In the early 1960s, Peter, Paul and Mary helped bring folk music out of the coffeehouses and onto the airwaves. Their songs of protest and struggle helped define a generation. In a new book, they look back on a career that spanned five decades.
Peter, Paul and Mary: Fifty Years of a Music Life (Imagine Publishing) Peter Yarrow and Noel Stookey of Peter, Paul, and Mary celebrate the release of the first book to detail the intimate story of the trio and their music. Here is the first and only book that visually tells us the intimate story of Peter, Paul, and Mary and their music, with stirring images that follow their passionate fifty-year journey to the center of America's heart. The very best of thousands of photographs, many rare and never before published, taken over five decades by some of the world's top photographers, show them at their earliest performances in the 1960s, when Mary was the most desired, beautiful, and charismatic performer and a new role model for women. Follow the trio as they lead America to discover the passionate soul of folk music. Join the struggle for racial equality, social justice, and freedom in this memorable journey, from the historic 1963 March on Washington with Martin Luther King, Jr., to the trio's appearance before half a million people in 1969 to end the Vietnam War, to their singing at the Hollywood Bowl for Survival Sunday in 1978, helping to launch the antinuke movement, the world's first international environmental movement. Through these images, you can feel and almost hear the trio's songs calling for a more caring, better world as you see photos of them performing with a courage and conviction that became, for so many, the embodiment and soundtrack of their generation's awakening to conscience, to activism, and to a new dream for all humankind. Peter, Paul, and Mary's songs of defiant hope and a certain unmasked innocence are still a powerful part of our American consciousness. This book reenacts the history of how the trio marked our lives with their indelible stamp of honesty—the sort we yearn to recapture and recreate in our own time, for ourselves, our children, and the generations to come. Peter, Paul, and Mary came into being at the dawn of John F. Kennedy's presidency, as America entered one of its most dramatic periods of social and political change.
