This crackdown erodes the privacy and freedoms VPNs offer, leaving citizens increasingly vulnerable to surveillance and control and stifling the flow of information. In a country where Internet disruptions and bans on platforms like X are commonplace, restricted VPN access could limit access to financial freedom tools like Bitcoin (which to some degree rely on access to on and off ramps like digital asset exchanges). The regime may further isolate Pakistanis from decentralized financial systems by tightening its grip on digital platforms and consolidating its control over information and financial activity. So, full disclosure: I wanted to do an episode on networking, covering it from a perspective I haven't yet addressed. That's not always easy when you've done more than 300 episodes! I've done episodes on how to network throughout your career, but today I wanted to focus on networking as a major component of your job search strategy. I ended up deciding to pull pieces from some other episodes I've done on networking while also adding fresh, new content. So here goes. Why Should I Network? -As many as 85% of jobs are gotten through networking, with 70% or more of all jobs being in the Hidden Job Market. -Hiring managers like to hire people they know. In the absence of people the hiring managers personally know, they like to hire people who are known by people the hiring managers know, like, and trust. Many companies have a referral program for this very reason. -When you are just applying online to the company's website or via sites like LinkedIn, it is akin to being in a very crowded auditorium, trying to get the attention of the people on stage. It's very difficult. -When you have a conversation with a decision maker in the absence of a posted job, you are in competition with no one. This is where the real magic happens. -Even when you have a world-class resume and superior LinkedIn profile like the ones I create for my clients, you are still not fully dimensional. That can only happen through personal interaction. -Once you've established a relationship with someone who is in a position to hire you or advocate for you, your shortcomings as they relate to the job qualifications may become less significant. Keep in mind that, as you network, you aren't asking people for a job. You are asking for leads, referrals, suggestions – and hopefully, for them to make an introduction on your behalf. Group NetworkingIf you are looking in your local area for an opportunity, an in-person networking event may be a great option for you. Keep in mind, however, that even if you are looking for positions in another city or state or a remote opportunity, the people you meet at a local networking event will have friends, colleagues, and family members in a wide range of roles as a wide range of companies – possibly even throughout the world. My recommendation is to identify 2-3 potential group networking opportunities, then give each at least two tries before crossing them off your list. Here are some suggestions: -Chamber of Commerce -Rotary, Kiwanis, and other service clubs -Your place of worship -Your university alumni association -Meetup/Facebook events -Events you attend on your own – if there are people there, you can network -Professional association meetings (your own and others') -Educational/training event -Causes you volunteer with/are on the board of In addition, there are online networking events, especially since Covid. I belong to a group called Ellevate Women's Network – do some googling and see what you can find that interests you. How to Work the EventThis depends, of course, on the setup of the event, but I want to give you some tips and considerations. -Set a goal. Depending on the overall size and composition of the group, decide ahead of time how many people you want to speak with. Alternatively, you may decide to network until you find someone who ____ (fill in the blank). -The all-important first impression. Smile, give a strong handshake, make eye contact as you introduce yourself. Repeat the other person's name as a way to help you remember it. -First be interested, then interesting. So many people get hung up on what they are going to say. Instead, focus on getting the other person to talk. Come up with a couple of questions you can ask everyone you meet. For example: -What book that you've read has had the biggest impact on you? -Are you a dog or a cat person – and why? -What's one thing on your bucket list? The common thread here is that these aren't questions everyone else is asking, and the person you are asking them of won't have a canned answer for you. They will have to drop into the present and actually think about their answer! And you'll learn something interesting about them. -Position yourself strategically. If people are standing around, stay out of the corners of the room. A good place to stand is near the food or drink areas. If you are attending a seated event such as a luncheon, choose a table that is already about ½ full – and where the people already at the table don't seem to be in a private huddle. Don't sit with people you already know. Here are some lines you can try at the table to get the conversation going: -Who has attended the event before? (Then ask those who say “yes” what they have found most beneficial about it) -What is everyone reading right now? -Who has seen a really good movie lately? One-on-One NetworkingMost people only think of networking with the people they already know – what I call “low-hanging fruit.” Their approach sounds something like this: “I'm looking for a job. If you think of anything, let me know.” In one ear and out the other. It isn't that they don't WANT to help you, it's that you haven't really given them a WAY to help you. Identify 10-12 companies you want to work for – those that are an ideal fit with your skills, the culture you thrive in, your preferred geographic location, products/services you believe in, etc. Then used LinkedIn's Advanced Search function to find: -Someone you know who works there, or has worked there recently -Someone who is connected to the decision maker -Centers of Influence How to Steer the ConversationNetworking, when done correctly, is an exchange among equals. You are giving as much value as you are receiving. If the meeting is 30 minutes, spend the first 20-25 talking about the other person. What projects are they working on? What new challenges are they facing? What's keeping them up at night? At minimum, you are providing a listening ear. You might also be able to suggest strategies, tools, resources, vendors, or other things that will help them. Then they are likely to say something like, “We've talked about me this whole time! What's going on with you?” You will have an ask prepared, based on your research of them on LinkedIn. Here's an example: “I'm in the early stages of looking for my next opportunity, leveraging my success at COMPANY as YOUR ROLE. I saw on LinkedIn that you are connected to NAME and she's someone I would love to speak with. Would you be willing to introduce me?” Now you have given the other person a specific ask – something concrete they can do for you. They may not know that person well (or at all) and may suggest someone else they can introduce you to – and that's okay. How to Incorporate Networking into Your Job Search-Just starting out: 25% of your time should be spent in networking-based activities -Mid-career: 50% -Senior-level and executive: 75% - 100% -If you are a full-time job seeker: 30 hours per week on your job search -Part-time job seeker: 5 hours per week on your job search You can do the math. If you listen to this podcast on a regular basis, you know that many of my topics come from clients – what they are struggling with, the questions they are asking me. Today's topic is one such example. Two of the things I hear most frequently relative to networking is: #1 – I don't know very many people #2 – I only know people in my job function/industry, and that's no help to me because I want to pivot As a reminder, here are my definitions: A career pivot is like a pivot in basketball – you keep one foot on the floor when you aren't dribbling the ball. A career pivot means you are either keeping a foot in your job function or your industry – and pivoting out of the other. An example of pivoting out of your industry might be changing from a human resources director at a hospital to HR director at an automobile manufacturing plant. A pivot out of your job function might be moving from IT at a tech company into a sales role at a different tech company. A career reinvention means you are moving both feet – to a new career function AND a new industry. An example would be changing from a marketing executive at a CPG company to do Foundation work at a university. So back to “I don't know anyone” and “I only know people in my job function/industry.” Here are my strategies: You DO Know People…More Than You ThinkA good way to begin to grasp your true network is to jump on LinkedIn and a) review your existing connections for growth possibilities there, and b) connect with people you haven't yet connected with. Keep in mind that you don't have to already know these people – your invitation to connect is you saying that you WANT to get to know them. To review your existing connections, use the Advanced Search function. Rather than giving the steps here, which will likely change in the not-too-distant future, reach out to me if you don't know how to use this resource. One you've opened the filters, select “2nd connections” and put in the name of your connection you want to review. This will open up all of this connection's connections, which you can then mine for possibilities. I recommend a message something like this: “I see we're both connected to Jim Smith, one of my former colleagues. Let's connect!” This previous method works from who you are already connected with. Let's say you also want to connect strategically with people who work in a certain company, hold a certain job title, or have worked there or held that title. The Advanced Search function comes into play here, as well. If you want to find the Director of Operations for ABC Company, used the Advanced Search function with the filters of Current Company and Job Title. You message for this situation might be: “I see we both used to work at XYZ company – let's connect!” OR “I am impressed by the level of engagement you have on LI – let's connect!” If you are going to use the approach of commenting on some aspect of their profile, you MUST customize this so they know you've actually looked at their profile. Nothing as generic as “Great profile – let's connect!” Notice that with all of these messages, I am not revealing my true intentions. Any sales person will tell you that someone has to know, like, and trust you to buy from you – and the people you are connecting with don't know you and therefore can't like or trust you yet. Come up with a 3-to-4 step approach with these connections, starting with your invitation to connect. Then perhaps your next communication, which should be once they accept your invitation, is to ask them a soft-pitch questions they are uniquely qualified to answer, such as “I see you've worked at ABC for three years now. I have some friends who have worked there and they had a great experience – they particularly commented on the company's strong executive leadership. What has your experience been?” Now note that this person isn't likely to say anything negative about their current employer – that would be career suicide. But that's not the point – the point is to get them engaged with you. If you get a response, then your next question could either be another soft pitch, such as “What is the biggest thing you are focused on right now at work?” or a more direct “I am interested in getting my foot in the door with your marketing department. Can you recommend someone I should reach out to?” You could also try something like this: “I am conducting a job search focused on pivoting from HR to marketing, staying within healthcare. Is there any piece of advice you could give me for making this pivot?” Now that I've given you the messaging strategy, WHO specifically should you be reaching out to for a career pivot or reinvention? That depends entirely on your new career goal. I DON'T recommend using LI as a fishing expedition for what your next career step should be – that's what career coaches and mentors are for. Rather, you are leveraging LI to help put you in contact with people who work in your new chosen job function and/or industry. Going back to the Advanced Search function, you might put in a certain job title, say Vice President of Sales, and an industry, such as Tech. You'll want to play around with your search parameters to get a manageable number of results back (I consider this to be about 200). So far, everything I've talked about is using LI. Let's talk a bit about in-person networking. This is really the same as if you were networking for a job in your same job function and industry; here's a refresher: #1 – First be interested, then interesting (let them do most of the talking) #2 – Make it a goal to give at least as much value as you get #3 – You are asking for leads, ideas, and referrals – not, in most cases, a job #4 – Vague requests lead to vague results. Be specific and succinct #5 – Follow up and follow through Finally – and this is very important – stop telling yourself that you don't know anyone in your new job function or industry. Science has proven that our brains take what we tell them and then scan our environments to find evidence. If we are telling our brains that we don't anyone, that's what our brains will see. It's called confirmation bias. Instead, try a more useful thought, such as “I am making new connections every day” or “I am meeting people in my new job function/industry.” There is no room that people with strong networks go into, where the “at capacity” lights come on and no one else can go in. You can go in that room at any time – just get to networking! Are you in the wrong job that chips away at you every day? The document and coaching programs offered by Exclusive Career Coaching will help you find a job that uses your zone of genius, recognizes your value, and pays you what you're worth. As a reminder, if you are a mid-career high-achiever with the goal of entering the C-suite, let's talk about my new coaching program, Highly Promotable. Here's the link to learn more: https://exclusivecareercoaching.com/highly-promotable Today, I want to share some tools on LinkedIn that many people I speak with aren't aware of. The Advanced Search Function If you are looking for a specific person, preferably someone with a unique name, you can probably use the search bar to find him or her. However, let's say you are looking for Susan Smith. I just did this search, and I got 13,000 results. How do you find the right Susan Smith? By using the Advanced Search function. Here's how to access: -Go to “My Network” in the navigation bar -Click on “Connections” in the box on the left. This will bring up all your connections. -Click on “Search with Filters” then “All Filters.” You then have the option to create searches to help you find the right Susan Smith. You can put her name in + something else you know about her – I find that putting in the university she attended tends to be the most reliable. The Advanced Search function also works when you are trying to find someone with a specific job title whose name you don't know. For example, the VP of Marketing for ABC Company. Having a Differentiating, On-Brand Background LinkedIn has a standard background of shades of grey. Here are three options for changing your background: -Use a royalty-free photo site, such as pixabay.com, to find a background that is on-brand. When I am doing this for my clients, I select four photos and try each one on for how it looks with LI's size restrictions and the fact that the client's head will be in the bottom left-hand corner of the photo. -Create a highly differentiating background using Canva. If you are familiar with this desktop publishing tool, you'll need to set your size to 1584 X 396 pixels, or 16.499 X 4.125 inches. Canva allows you to include such things as a branding statement. You can use one of Canva's backgrounds or import a picture of your company or product. -Combine the two by using a stock photo from pixabay or another site uploaded into Canva. You can then add whatever text or art elements you wish. Add Featured Content First off, let me say what I DON'T want you to put in your Featured Content section – your resume. This allows employers to access a version of your resume that has NOT been customized for the position they are hiring for, putting you at a disadvantage. It is better to have a robust LI profile that draws them in, then they can reach out to you for your resume (which you can then customize). If you don't already have content in your Featured section, you'll need to add that section by going to the top box of your profile (where your picture and headline area) and click on “Add Profile Section.” What might you want to include in this section? Here are some possibilities: -Information about your employer or products/services -News releases about your employer or products/services -A video you've created to introduce yourself – whether to potential employers or potential customers -A helpful, downloadable resource (I have my How to Assess Resume Writers on my profile) -A link to a podcast you've been featured on -A sample of your work You can have multiple items in your Featured section, but know that only three will be visible. You can manipulate this section to show the three you choose. Leveraging Your Connections' Connections I tell clients about this all the time, and almost no one has thought about this. It utilizes the Advanced Search function. Let's say you are connected to me on LinkedIn and you want to “mine” my contacts. Go into the Advanced Search function and click “All Filters.” -Change 1st connections to 2nd connections. -In the box “Connections of” add the person's name whose contacts you wish to mine. -Add whatever other criteria you wish; otherwise you'll get ALL their connections. You might want to add a company name, industry, job title, or geographic location. If you want to add these people to your connections, I recommend a customized message that goes something like this: John, Hello! I see we're both connected to Susan Smith – let's connect! Private Mode In general, I want you to be visible to the people whose sites you are visiting – but there are times when you want to go into stealth mode. Most often, this is helpful when you want to sneak around privately before deciding who you want to connect with. To go into Private Mode: -Click on your thumbnail in the upper right corner of your navigation bar -Click on “Settings and Privacy” -Click on “Visibility” in the box on the left -Click on “Profile Viewing Options” and switch to “Private Mode” -Remember to change back when you're done DIY vs. DFY DIY If you want to update your LinkedIn profile yourself, here is my #1 tip, which I'm going to yell in all caps: DON'T CUT AND PASTE YOUR RESUME INTO LINKEDIN. Your LinkedIn profile should be written in first person and sound as if you are telling your story to someone over a cup of coffee. Less “businessy” than your resume and more conversational. Even a drop of humor here and there is okay. You have the opportunity to show personality, tell some background (not just the what but also some of the how), and show evidence of your motivation level on LinkedIn. Do it! DFY If you either don't have the time or the skill set to write an outstanding LinkedIn profile for yourself, you may want to consider hiring someone like me to do it for you. Here are the benefits: -An unbiased perspective on you and your strengths -Knowledge of how to attract recruiters and/or buyers to you (SEO) -The ability to write in a compelling story-telling manner -The time you'll save in writing and rewriting (and rewriting) -If you desire, training on how to optimize LI for your goals

Wingnut Social: The Interior Design Business and Marketing Podcast
Twitter advanced search for mobile is here! Is there a tweet you've been trying to find forever, or do you want to clean up some of your old tweets? Twitter is launching a new “advanced search” feature on the mobile app that will provide users with a range of filters when searching for content. Social Media Manager Hayden is here to walk us through the latest developments. *** ⭐️Twitter's advanced search on mobile will provide you with a range of additional options when searching for content, including accounts mentioned, date ranges, personal mentions, hashtags, and like and retweet counts. All of these qualifiers are already built into the app, and are available in the Advanced Search tab on desktop - but until now, they haven't been easily accessible on mobile. You'll also be able to use these additional search parameters when conducting a tweet search on an individual user's profile. ⭐️This new feature can be a very helpful addition for businesses and interior designers when trying to search things that are specific to your field. If someone is looking for interior design trends, they will be able to easily search any of these in the new Twitter advanced search option. Being able to search tweets with large amounts of retweets and engagement will be a fantastic way to identify content that is trending currently. ***
For our final episode of 2022, join us as we talk with retired New Hampshire Fish & Game Lieutenant, Wayne Saunders and Major Jim Juneau. Together, they have over 45 years of service in the name of conservation. Their paths first crossed before Jim was even sworn in and Wayne was facing what could arguably be his worst day in law enforcement. In 1997, after the suspect had already killed four people, including two state troopers and a local judge, Wayne took pursuit across state lines in what would eventually land him in the hospital. After 23 years and moving through the ranks as an officer, sergeant, lieutenant, and the president of the Conservation Officer Relief Association, Wayne decided to retire to enjoy time with family. That wasn't the end of his career though as he now hosts the podcast Wardens Watch and shares the stories of other conservation officers across the country.Jim retired after 22 years as the Assistant Chief of Law Enforcement and served in many different roles as he made his way through his career. Some of those notable positions were on the Dive Team, Advanced Search and Rescue, and also an instructor for the Defense Tactics. After some time off to enjoy retirement, Jim has gone back to work for the state, but gives most of his time to HHO and helping with Trout Unlimited.HHO is proud to serve alongside those who preserve our greatest asset through conservation and ensuring those we serve will always have a place to turn to in the outdoors.
Hey – I have extended the Rate, Review, and Subscribe contest through 10/14 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern – so what are you waiting for? To participate: Rate (1 entry); Subscribe (2 entries); Review (4 entries) Winner will receive a $250 Visa gift card Participants should notify me of their participation and what they did via lesa@exclusivecareercoaching.com Today, we're talking about the basics of networking. This is especially for those of you who a) avoid networking like a root canal, b) describe your networking skills as “terrible;” and c) those of you who think networking is not necessary to land your dream job or advance your career. Here's a quote I used on a previous podcast: “The opposite of networking is NOT working.” Keep in mind that your network doesn't just consist of people you know…it consists of people who know you. Think about it…you may “know” Tom Cruise or Joe Biden…but do they know you? If they don't, then they aren't in your network. Through this podcast, I am networked to hundreds of people I've never met, but they are in my network. They reach out to me when they need the services and expertise I provide. They aren't yet in my network until I meet them and get to know them. Here are some of the reasons networking is so important throughout your career: Internal networking: 1. To advance within your current organization 2. To get tapped for high-profile projects within your current organization 3. To receive recognition for the work you are doing 4. To become well known for your brand throughout your organization External networking: 1. To find out about, and get promoted for, job opportunities 2. To collaborate and partner with people in your community, your profession, or your industry on mutually beneficial projects/opportunities 3. To be selected for leadership roles within your community, your profession, or your industry 4. To help others! Networking should never be a one-way street…all take and no give. Now let's talk about the ABC's of networking. Remember, this is a primer…having said that, anyone would benefit from this refresher. Here we go, taking a reporter's Who, What, When, Where, and Why approach: Who. I get a lot of questions about who people should be networking with, and that question tells me they don't have a networking strategy. You develop a networking strategy by knowing where you want to work. You identify 10-12 companies that are a perfect match for your skills, the culture you work best in, your preferred work environment and geographic location, etc. Once you have identified your dream employers, work backwards using LinkedIn to figure out who you know relative to that employer. -Do you know someone who works there, or has worked there recently? -Do you know someone who knows the person who can make the decision to hire you? -If you can't think of anyone for the previous prompts, who do you know who is well connected and might be able to point you in the right direction? You have to know how to use LinkedIn's Advanced Search function to pull this off, so if you aren't familiar with this functionality – listen to last week's episode #244 for a step-by-step process. Note: This is the more strategic approach to networking, but you can also start with what I call “low-hanging fruit,” the people you know well who you feel the most comfortable starting with. This gives you an opportunity to work the kinks out of your networking approach…and who knows where it might lead. What. We're talking about networking here – meaning, as I define it, an exchange among equals. I make a clear distinction between networking and informational interviewing, which is you asking a series of questions of someone about their job, their employer, their career trajectory, etc. It is much more one-sided than networking. When. So many people mistakenly think networking is just for when you are looking for a job, and nothing is further from the truth. When done correctly, networking should be a career-long process. If you aren't looking for a job, build a modest amount of time into your regular schedule for networking activities. For example: -15 minutes, 2X/week on LinkedIn to connect with people, comment on posts, and cultivate relationships with your connections -Attend 1 networking event every week, either 1:1 or a group event. -Connect on LinkedIn with everyone you meet at the networking events or otherwise. If you are looking for a job, here's the formula I use for how to parse out your job search time: -If you are entry-level: at least 25% of your job search time should be spent on networking-based activities -If you are beyond entry level or at mid-career: at least 50% of your job search time should be spent on networking-based activities -If you are at a more senior level: at least 75% of your job search time should be spent on networking-based activities -If you are at the executive level: 100% of your job search time should be spent on networking-based activities Activities for job seekers might include: -1 hour, 5 days a week on LinkedIn – connecting, cultivating relationships, commenting on posts -2-3 networking events every week, with a combination of 1:1 and group events -Connecting on LinkedIn with everyone you meet at the networking events or otherwise. Where. I talked a lot about this in episode #179 of the podcast; I encourage you to listen to that episode for a more in-depth discussion of where to network. The suggestions I made in that episode include: -Meetup -Service clubs (i.e. Rotary, Kiwanis) -Chamber of Commerce -Facebook/community events -Your place of worship -Your university alumni association -Create your own networking group In addition to meeting in person, you can network via Zoom and Skype – so geography should not be a deterrent. Why. Hopefully, I answered this question at the outset. Let's add one more: How. Here are eight tips for the logistics of 1:1 networking: -Don't be too aggressive when you first reach out. -Don't assume they will participate. -Make it 80% about them; 20% about you. -Be able to clearly articulate what you are looking for and what you bring to the table. -Have an ask planned – AND be open to other ideas your networking partner might have. -Follow-up and follow through is essential. -This should not be a one-time thing – have a plan for on-going communication. -Keep records! If you are attending a networking event, here are eight tips: -Have a plan ahead of time. Is there someone specific you want to meet, or do you want to meet a certain number of people? This allows you to have a measure for success. -Stand near the beverage or food station – avoid the corners. -Be interested first, then interesting. -Don't hesitate to leave a conversation and move on – it's the nature of the beast. -Be able to clearly articulate what you are looking for and what you bring to the table. -Follow-up and follow through is essential. -Keep notes. -Periodically review the networking circles you are in and make changes as needed to maximize your effectiveness. RATE, REVIEW, SUBSCRIBE CONTEST IN SEPTEMBER To participate: Rate (1 entry); Subscribe (2 entries); Review (4 entries) Winner will receive $250 Visa gift card Participants should notify me of their participation and what they did via lesa@exclusivecareercoaching.com Winner will be selected on Friday, September 30th, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Recently, I was showing a client how to leverage her connections' connections on LinkedIn, and she was blown away. She felt like she had found the holy grail, so I thought I would share this technique with you. What we're talking about. Let's begin with what I'm talking about. You have connections on LinkedIn – LinkedIn calls these 1st-level connections. The people you are already connected with. Each of your connections has connections – LinkedIn calls these 2nd-level connections. Think of them as one-offs. You have the ability to see all of your 2nd-level connections. Why would you want to do this? Because it significantly expands your network. And, because these people are connected to someone you may know, you can reach out to your mutual connection and ask them to introduce you. Conversely, because you are a 2nd-level connection, someone who may want to interview you for a position can reach out to your mutual connection to get the down low on you before they reach out to you. I have had multiple clients leverage my connections – their 2nd-level connections, to obtain jobs. Either they've asked me to introduce them or they've made the connection themselves. I have about 6,000 connections, so leveraging my connections significantly expanded those clients' networking reach. How to do it. Hopefully, I've made a compelling case for leveraging your connections' connections…now let's talk about how to do it. You really need to master the Advanced Search function for this. As of this recording date in September of 2022, here are the steps to access your connections' connections: 1. Type “People” in the search bar. You'll then get a series of options that pop up under the search bar. 2. Click on “All Filters.” 3. Let's say you are trying to mine my connections. You would click “2nd connections” and put my name in the “Connections of” space. You'll want to add additional filters; otherwise, you will get about 6,000 results. For example, maybe you aren't connected to anyone who works at Amazon, so you choose “2nd connections” of Lesa Edwards, and in the “Current Company” box, you select Amazon. You will then see all my connections who currently work at Amazon. If this doesn't yield results, you could then try 2nd connections of someone else you are connected to, or you could include people who previously worked at Amazon. You can also use the geographic filter – who works at Amazon in a particular city? Or maybe you are moving to Dallas and want to see who I'm connected to who lives there no matter the company they work for. See how this works? What to do next. Once you've identified some target people, you can either reach out to them directly for a connection or ask the mutual connection to introduce you. If you reach out directly, I recommend starting with something like this: “I see we're both connected to Lesa Edwards – let's connect!” Notice I am not trying to sell myself or ask for information up front; this can be a deterrent for many people if they think you are being too “salesy.” Once they have accepted your invitation to connect, I recommend thanking them with a message like this: “Thanks so much for connecting! Lesa said you really love working at ___ and she suggested I reach out to you with my questions about ___. Would you have a few minutes to jump on Zoom with me?” From here, your goal is to have specific questions to ask that should only take about 15 minutes of their time. Before you end the conversation, ask “Who else should I talk to about ___?” and ask them to introduce you to those people. -Follow up with a thank you email Are you in the wrong job that chips away at you every day? The CareerSpring document and coaching program will help you find a job that uses your zone of genius, recognizes your value, and pays you what you're worth. In this episode of The Trust Podcast, Zoe Cairns is on the show to share her tips to building a target audience from zero. Many people are interested in gaining an audience, especially targeted ones when starting a business from scratch. Zoe shared her key steps on building an online audience and engagement and converting it into sales. Common mistakes on starting a business [0:52] When analyzing why people are not getting any results, they are often on the wrong platforms and are too scattered on a lot of social media platforms. [1:24] It's also about not engaging with your audience. You are only constantly sending messages, which results in one-way communication instead of two-way communication. Engagement is the key for you to gain an audience in your online community. Knowing your audience [2:41] Five years ago, we set out our goals and business goals; thus, we know what services or products you want to advertise out there. [3:22] In business, it is important to know and acknowledge your short- and long-term goals. [3:36] Knowing your focus areas means knowing your target audience for each service and product. After that, you start to analyze your audiences' interests. This helps to separate each potential customer into different platforms. Creating buyer personas [6:13] When you have a new product or service, putting your target audience into a character helps an ideal client for that particular focus area. [8:17] Keeping up to date in terms of changes in every social media platform helps you to distinguish which audience would match the best for each of your products and services. Social media platforms [9:46] Facebook has a great tool called Facebook Audience Insights, wherein it shows you all the demographics of everyone on Facebook. You can also select a location of your preferred audience. Facebook Insights also enables you to learn their interests and pages that they like. [11:42] Once you know your audience, you can then determine what platforms you're going to use because there's no point you're using platforms if your audience aren't hanging out on there. In small businesses and corporate organizations, you need to be thinking about where the time is allocated by your team members and for business owners. [12:43] Another tool for Twitter is a tool called Followerwonk. It is a tool that enables you to go and search all the bios of everyone on Twitter to find your audience. [13:10] On LinkedIn, you can look for different people under the Advanced Search by their job title. You start by reaching out and connecting with everyone and then sending them your sales pitch. What you want to do is go and engage with them, go and look at their posts, start commenting on some of their posts, and not stalk them, but start to engage with them. [14:27] With Instagram, look at the different hashtags and find out if your audience is hanging out and engaging on different posts under the relevant interest hashtags. Using a tool called Flick.tech, which is a great tool to find relevant and trending hashtags and find hashtags that are relevant to your target audience, it's a great way to check them out engage with your audience. [15:46] Don't be on every single social media platform. If you thinly spread yourself across too many, what happens is you're not active on other platforms. Use only one or two platforms. Engaging content [16:57] Once you've known your audience and their interests, your next step is to create engaging content that enables them to engage with you. Research is important to know their challenges and create a solution to their problems. [18:04] Check out the pages that your audience is interacting with and how it puts across their content to your possible audience. This will give you ideas for creating your content. [19:18] Engaging is an important process to building your audience. Key Quotes: [1:49 – 2:00] “Algorithms on the social media platforms want you to be engaged in on their platform and keep people longer on their platforms to make them feel part of a community. So, engagement is key.” [19:42 – 19:57] “You need to be going into the platform and engaging with your audience on a consistent basis. Go and find them. Go and engage with them. And I don't mean go and bombard them with sales messages. Go and engage, build rapport and build conversations.” Learn more about Zoe at ZC Social Media Visit ZC Social Media and Academy: https://zcsocialmedia.com/ https://www.zcsocialmediaacademy.com/

Selepak's Tips for Cleaning Up Social Media Profiles:The best way for students to clean up and protect their online presence is to do a regular social media audit. Students should reexamine their Instagram posts, go back through their Twitter posts with Advanced Search, check their TikTok videos, and review their daily Facebook Memories notifications for posts that no longer accurately reflect their reputation or could damage their reputation.Too often we make posts when we are emotional that doesn’t accurately reflect our true views or at least our more articulate and subdued views, or posts we made when we were younger that embarrass us today. While it is always important to pause before making a social media post that might be made in anger or despair, it is just as important to pause and review any old posts that were made under similar emotional distress, or made without thinking. Parents and educators should also remind students that posts made today for likes, comments, and follows, could be the same posts that tomorrow prevent a student from getting a job, internship, or letter of recommendation. Sometimes, you are free to shout your professional availability from the roof top. Other times, your job search needs to be covert, because you don't want your current employer finding out what you're up to. Here are five tips for utilizing LinkedIn for a discreet job search. Don't share your profile edits with your connections. Changes that spur a network update: · Adding a new or current position · Editing an existing or current position · Celebrating a work anniversary Changes that no longer spur a network update: · Uploading or editing your profile picture · Editing your Headline · Editing your Intro Summary · Changes to your contact info · Editing or adding education · Editing or adding volunteer experiences, languages, skills, publications, certifications, course, projects, test scores, organizations, patents To be discreet, don't share these edits with your connections. This DOES NOT mean that they won't see those edits should they visit your profile; it means they won't receive a notification in their inbox that you've made those changes. Here's how to make your edits private: Click “Me” underneath the thumbnail of your picture at the top of your profile Click “Settings & Privacy” Click “Share job changes, education changes, and work anniversaries” Toggle to “No” Keep your stalking private. You're going to be checking people out on LinkedIn and deciding who you want to connect with, and the best way to do this is in private mode. This allows you to flit around, conduct your professional surveillance, and decide who you want to connect with without leaving clues as to who you are. Here's how to view others' profiles in private mode: Click “Me” underneath the thumbnail of your picture Click “Settings & Privacy” Click “Profile Viewing Options” Choose “Private Mode” Generally, you want people to know you've visited their profile, so be sure to switch back to full view mode when you're finished. Use the Advanced Search function….liberally. If you know the name of the person you are searching for, you can type that in the search box at the top of your profile. If, however, you need to find people you want to connect with, the Advanced Search function should become your best friend. To access the Advanced Search function, click on the magnifying glass inside the search bar. You'll get a number of search options. If, for example, you want to find the decision-maker at ABC company, put ABC under “Company” and the job title of the person who would make a hiring decision about you under “Title.” Reach out to a mutual connection and ask for an introduction. LinkedIn makes it easy to see what connections you and the decision-maker have in common. If it is someone you know well, you might want to reach out to that person and ask for an introduction to the decision-maker. This approach, while being a bit more cumbersome than the next approach, is more likely to yield results because you are getting a warm introduction, rather than cold-calling. Make it personal. When you send a connection request to a decision-maker, personalize it, such as: Sue, I see we have several connections in common. Let's connect. Once they've accepted your request, you can share the real reason you're reaching out, such as: Sue, Thank you for connecting with me! John Smith, one of your former associates, has spoken very highly of you and ABC. For full show notes with screen shots, please visit our website at http://www.notetofilepodcast.com When I first started in clinical research, I worked for a well-established neurology department at a university. At the time, it seemed like studies just flowed in without having to pursue them - until they didn’t. Faculty came and went. Research staff had turned over. Suddenly, we needed studies - bad! At the time, I had no idea what I was doing. I took to clinicaltrials.gov and started sorting, reviewing and emailing any and all contacts that seemed appropriate. It was a tedious process. My response rate was abysmal and most the replies I did manage to get were saying the study was not adding sites. However, over time, I did manage to bring in some studies and get things slowly back on track. This is a method that I still use today. Everyone should. Truthfully, it is often no less frustrating. I have managed to make some beneficial relationships and land some great studies though. One thing that made the search so much easier was creating an RSS feed that sent me all newly posted studies. I didn’t have to spend as much time filtering through every study every day. Here are the steps for setting up an RSS feed so that you can spend less time clicking around on ct.gov: Step 1: Navigate to www.clinicaltrials.gov and click on “Advanced Search”. Step 2: Enter your search criteria. I would recommend keeping it fairly loose so that you capture all possible study opportunities. Hit “Search” once complete. Step 3: You will be brought to your results. On the top of the results, to the far right, you will see “Subscribe to RSS.” Click the link and a new page will be opened. Step 4: You will be presented with an option as to which type of feed you want. I prefer to include modified studies as a study may reopen to enrollment and I want to ensure that those studies make it in to my feed. Step 5: The page that comes up next will look like a bunch of code and gibberish. From here, copy the link in the address bar. This is the link you will paste in to your reader. Step 6: Add the URL to your RSS reader. At this point, your feed can be read in whatever reader you choose. Even Microsoft Outlook has an option to add RSS feeds. All studies that match the search criteria that you entered will be fed straight in to Outlook. You can read how to set that up here. If you choose to use a different reader, a quick Google search will turn up how to add feeds to your reader. I personally use Feedly as my reader as it also pulls in any news sites you wish to add. From here I can keep up with the latest news and any new leads from clinicaltrials.gov all from one place. That’s it. Pretty easy, right? However, this has made a big impact on how much time I spend trolling around ct.gov. What are your tips and tricks for better utilizing ct.gov?

First of all: In full disclosure, I spend about 15 minutes per day, five days a week, on LinkedIn - just want you to know I practice what I preach. As an entrepreneur, my goal on LinkedIn is to get clients – to be seen as the career management expert I am. Your goal might be to get a new job, to be more attractive to recruiters, or to be recognized as a Subject Matter Expert in your field. Here's how I spend my 15-minute parcels of time (and I actually set the timer on my phone for this): Mondays: I offer an “old” podcast post on my personal profile and my business profile, then I spend 15 minutes wishing happy birthdays, congrats on the new job or promotion, and interacting in the groups I am in. So, a tad more than 15 minutes on Mondays. Tuesdays: 15 minutes of pure interaction and congrats. Wednesdays: I post my new podcast on LI, so less than 15 minutes. Thursdays: The same as Tuesdays; 15 minutes of pure interaction and congrats. Fridays: I “recycle” old content I've created as an original article (essentially a blog that lives on LI). Because I also create original artwork for the article using Canva, I spend a bit more than 15 minutes on LI on Fridays. One thing I used to do is send personalized messages to everyone I'm connected to. Hi, how can we support each other, that sort of thing. I wasn't getting ANY responses. Not one. This was very labor-intensive, so I eliminated it in favor of other higher-yield activities. Some definitions are in order here, for those of you less familiar with LI. My attempt is to explain any of the above activities in case you have no idea what I'm talking about. -On your LI profile, you have the option of creating an “article” – original content, or a short-form post – which can be a question, announcement, link, etc. You do this under the “home” tab at the top of your LI profile. -If you are writing an article – again, this means original content – you have the option of artwork, which I strongly recommend. When you click on the article link, you'll see where the artwork goes. You'll have to play around with sizing, but I use Canva for the artwork and for pics I use Pixabay. -The “Notifications” tab is where you'll see information on whose birthday it is, who's gotten a new job or a promotion, etc. As I mentioned above, I do this on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays – this keeps it from being an overly-long task and allows me to be timely with my comments. -I also talked about commenting in the groups I belong to. If you haven't joined any groups, that will be step one for you. To find groups, go into your profile. At the top, you'll find the search bar. When you click on that, one of the options that comes up is “Groups.” Click on Groups, then in the search bar put a specific type of group you're interested in. If that yields an overly large number of results, narrow your search further. When I'm deciding on which groups I want to join, I look for two things: group size and activity level. If I see that the most recent post in a group was two weeks ago, I know that's not an active group and I keep going. Generally, I look for larger groups – they don't have to be the biggest, as I may get lost in those – but there does need to be a critical mass. -Now that you've joined some groups, you want to poke around in those groups to see where you can make a comment, ask a question, agree with something, etc. In general, you don't want to self-promote, at least not right off the bat. If you position yourself as an expert in your field, you WILL be self-promoting, but in a way that is acceptable and will serve you better. Even if you're just positioning yourself as an engaged professional in your field, you are getting your name and your skills out there. -Review the groups you belong to regularly. If there are ones that aren't doing it for you, exit those groups. Poke around for some new groups every once in a while. I like a critical mass of 20-25 groups; any more than that is unmanageable for me; any fewer and I'm not spreading the love around enough. So how might your 15-minute parcels be used? It's helpful to start with a goal for LI. Your goal might be: -To increase your number of connections -To spread your influence on LI and be seen as a Subject Matter Expert -To get closer to decision-makers in your dream companies -To engage in professional conversations via the groups you belong to -To stay connected to people you used to work with, haven't seen for a while, etc. Here are some suggestions: -Spend time 3-5X/week sending birthday wishes and congratulations to your network. -Spend time 3-5X/week interacting in the groups you belong to. -Connect with people (used the Advanced Search function). -Send messages to those you're already connected with. These can range from personal messages to people you actually know, to asking questions to get to know those you don't already know personally. -If you have original content or are willing to create it, share on LI. -Comment on posts in your feed (these are the people you're connected to, separate from the groups you belong to). Notice what ISN'T included in these 15-minute parcels: -Job searching/applying to jobs. If you're in active job search mode, this could easily take all of your daily 15-minute parcels and then some. This should be a separate block of time, as part of your job search strategy. -Updating your LI profile This infrastructure work is important but doesn't count as connecting/engaging time. In summary: -Set one or two goals for your time on LI -Calendar 15 minutes every day for LI, and write in your calendar how you will spend this time each day -Review your activities periodically to determine what is, and isn't, getting traction. Need help creating an amazing LI profile, or maximizing LI for your career goals? Set up a call with me and I'll let you know how I can help you one-on-one. Subscribe to Modern Marketing Engine Apple Podcasts |Stitcher |Google Play | Google Podcasts Vengreso recently published an original report titled The State of Digital Selling with LinkedIn in 2019. We surveyed 862 B2B sales reps across five industries: professional services, technology, manufacturing, healthcare, and financial services to assess their digital selling skills. The sales reps were asked 10 multiple-choice questions about how they use LinkedIn in their sales activities to assess how their use of LinkedIn impacts their digital selling results. Tune into today’s episode as Bernie and his guest Kurt Shaver, Co-founder and CSO at Vengreso, summarize the key findings that are published in the 20-page report. Get the full report on the Vengreso website or at stateofdigitalselling.com. Don’t miss out on the full report’s finding to understand how reps are being effective in digital selling through LinkedIn. How Has LinkedIn Impacted Digital Selling? One of the key takeaways from The State of Digital Selling with LinkedIn in 2019 report is that LinkedIn has been severely under-utilized by sales and marketing professionals. Despite being the largest publicly available B2B database in the world, the number of professionals using the platform for sales engagement is disappointing. LinkedIn is a comprehensive tool sales professionals should use to find, engage, connect with, and foster relationships with potential customers. The scope and depth of information housed in the LinkedIn platform are enough to keep most sales professionals’ digital Rolodex full of prime prospects for years. It has already revolutionized digital selling among those sales and marketing teams who use it appropriately. Your LinkedIn Profile Is More Than A Resume Most LinkedIn users recognize the platform as a way to present a professional face to the business world. However, beyond uploading a professional picture and completing the resume portion of the bio, most salespeople fail to optimize their profiles. Sales professionals need to move beyond using LinkedIn solely as a resume and instead focus on presenting a profile written through the eyes of their target customer. The report shows that most sales professionals are unaware that LinkedIn allows you to upload a variety of media files to include documents, PDFs, videos, and reports. The backbone of digital selling is creating and maintaining credibility with your target customer. The percentage of salespeople using LinkedIn to repurpose existing content and spread new content is surprisingly low considering the power such information has in generating trust. Are Your Connections Referring You Business? It’s true that the quality of your connections is more important than the quantity, but approximately half of the sales professionals surveyed had fewer than 500 connections. The salespeople who generate the most revenue are those with the biggest network. Having a net of just anyone is not effective, but when you focus on connecting with large numbers of people in your area of focus, you enhance your ability to sell more effectively and consistently. When you have a large network, you have more people from whom to gain referrals. However, the number of individuals in sales who are not using their network for referrals is astounding. 93 percent of those surveyed in The State of Digital Selling with LinkedIn in 2019 report have not or are not sure if they have ever asked for a referral from their connections. Considering the networking opportunities on LinkedIn, this is a huge area of improvement needed by sales professionals. Why Aren’t Sales Professionals Using The Advanced Search Feature? Not only are sales professionals not using their connections often enough to generate referrals and leads, but they are also not using the Advanced Search feature within LinkedIn. Perhaps most salespeople are unaware that this feature exists since 40 percent of those surveyed indicated they have never used the Advanced Search tool. This feature provides sales professionals the ability to create and save searches to find people they want to connect with and create Search Alerts that notify the user of new contacts matching the search criteria. Those who know how to use the Advanced Search feature are more effective at prospecting on LinkedIn. Bernie and Kurt closed this episode with an invitation to get the full report to read key insights on how to use the findings gained from this survey. To get the full 20-page report just go to www.stateofdigitalselling.com. If you haven't created a LinkedIn profile yet, that has to be Step #1. We'll talk in detail about the critical elements of a Search Engine Optimized LI profile in a future podcast, but let me give you a few quick pointers here: 1. Your pic is critical – make sure it's only of you, professional, and your look friendly. 2. Your summary is the most important text of your profile. You have approximately 2,000 characters to tell your story and compel employers to reach out to you…make it count. 3. There's a good reason the magic number of connections on LinkedIn is 500. Get to that number any way you can, and then you can start being more selective about who you connect with. So, to re-emphasize: having a decent profile is key to the tips I'm giving you here, so you make a good first impression when people look at your profile. Here are ten ways you can use LinkedIn in your job search: 1. Find someone in the company you are applying to, such as a human resources professional or department decision-maker, and reach out via LinkedIn. 2. Find who you know and are connected to relative to a position you are applying for and ask them to help you in some way, such as putting in a good word for you or giving you some “insider info.” 3. Identify who you know relative to your target employers; these are the people you want to network with, preferably face-to-face. 4. Join LinkedIn groups that put you in proximity to decision-makers in your target employers. 5. Follow your target employers; this gives you an inside scoop into jobs as they open up. 6. Research your target employers on LinkedIn. 7. Reach out to people who work at employers you are interested in to get the inside scoop. 8. Use the Jobs function on LinkedIn to find out who's in hiring mode, regardless of whether or not they're posting positions you're interested in. 9. Make sure it's professional. 10.Use the Advanced Search function to find people you already know so you get your connections to 500+. Welcome to episode 151 at the end of another traumatic week for LinkedIn and it’s new design! Following on from last weeks episode, I want to dig a bit deeper into what communication techniques work and what really don’t work on LinkedIn. But first….. Interesting Stuff I Saw This Week Workplace from Facebook is now live…..will it cause LinkedIn problems? Are LinkedIn understaffed and overworked?….or just low quality or ignorant? I suspect they are severely overworked and understaffed….ironic for a site that makes 60% of its revenue from recruitment! LinkedIn Salary - Did you know that premium users no longer have to add their salary to be able to use the salary feature. Salary can be found in the ‘More menu’ New Desktop Design Update Now that the majority of users have the new UI, the heat is really turning up on LinkedIn…members are really not happy! Someone has even created an online petition! New LinkedIn - Petition - Bring Back Tagging, Advanced Search and Rankings! Whilst I think it’s important to provide LinkedIn with feedback, I don’t think ranting helps (other than the person that wrote it might feel better!). The above petition does not really tackle the most important or realistic issues. Let’s be realistic, LinkedIn are not likely to bring back advanced search and tagging (which is not actually related to the new UI) has moved to Sales Navigator so they are not going to reverse that and rankings (a pointless feature anyway) are hardly worth raising a petition about! I’m not happy with the new design either but I am trying to be constructive and find realistic solutions. The biggest issue for me is quality - there are just far too many bugs or features that seem to have been accidentally forgotten! This is unforgivable and LinkedIn need to ‘up their game’ and sort these quickly. Here is my list of bugs, it is worth noting that this list was almost double the length in November, so things are slowly getting better. Bugs or ‘forgotten’ features Hovering over names (quoted in updates) does not open up a preview box. You can’t see who shared your article Notifications do not take you to the exact place in a thread Typing responses to comments is impossible to see Recommendation order can’t be changed - despite appearing though it can views of post’ on homepage is totally out of sync with the real number. Page load times are slow for many When someone comments on an image update you can’t see the image in your feed…making the comment often impossible to understand Have you found any more? Let me know if I have missed any. New UI fact: Did you know that emoji’s in name fields make the person impossible to find in a name search? Remove all emoji’s from your name field (they should never have been there in the first place!) Communication. The Mirror Effect How many times do we receive a message on LinkedIn or email that shows a clear lack of understand as to our interests and needs? How often do we see a message that is clearly a standardised format, sent to multiple recipients? What is going on here? People find it harder to communicate online because they have no signals to read, or at least they think they don’t…..so we get the mirror effect! The computer screen acts like a mirror and all we see is our own need and wants….net result is poor, ineffective communication. Let’s consider a better example; Mike Richards is specialist treasury recruiter. Mike noticed that following an article he wrote on LinkedIn (aimed at being of value to treasury professionals) he was getting a lot of new followers. He sifted through these followers and picked out those that were of particular interest. He found 22 interesting followers, all potential clients or candidates. He then sent them all a personalised invitation to connect which read as follows; I noticed you recently reviewed my profile maybe after reading one of my articles, you may also have seen this post about improving your LinkedIn profile if it helps you? http://www.treasuryrecruitment.com/10_linkedin_tips/ Feel free to connect if you want to? Regards Mike @ MR Recruitment All 22 accepted! This is no surprise because he acted on a clear signal that they were interested in him, rather than assuming they would be. In addition he provides value in the link with some LinkedIn tips and the very ‘non pushy’ line ‘feel free to connect if you want to’ Mike knows his market and the tone of his invitation is perfectly suited to Treasury professionals. This is what I mean by effective communication. Move beyond the mirror effect and communicate in a compassionate, person centred way. I would love to hear about more examples, both good and bad. Please drop me a line on LinkedIn or to mark@linkedinformed.com
Welcome to episode 147, this week, I had planned an interview but that didn’t happen so I thought I would talk about something that I know is very important to many of you…..advanced search in the new desktop design. But first…. New Desktop UI Design Update LinkedIn have changed the way the data archive operates. Now you can download a smaller set of data more quickly, this is presumably meant to replace the connections download which has been deprecated in the new UI. Update On last weeks show I explained that you can create a custom audience on Facebook from your downloaded LinkedIn connections. I still think this is a good idea but it is worth noting that this is against Facebooks rules. Interesting Stuff I Saw This Week Here are the articles I refer to in this weeks episode; LinkedIn Data Reveals the Most Promising Jobs of 2017 Human bot hybrid finds LinkedIn email, phone number-filching holes Microsoft Promotes LinkedIn's Kevin Scott to CTO Advanced Search With The New UI LinkedIn released anew video this week showing how you can search for people in the new UI, it’s very basic but they did go on to explain that for more advanced users they have brought back some important boolean operators. The five operators you can use in the search field are; firstname: Finds members based on first name lastname: Finds members based on last name title: Finds members based on their current title (this one is likely to be the most useful) company: Finds members based on their current company (keyword search) school: Finds members based on schools attended (keyword search) Search operators complement the filters on the right-hand side of the results page and the AND, OR and NOT boolean operators. Here’s a quick example: to search for current software engineers not named Doe, who have attended either Harvard University or Stanford University, try: title:"software engineer" NOT lastname:doe school:(harvard OR stanford) When using search operators, remember to use quotes for multi-word search terms, and parentheses for AND, OR and NOT phrases. If you don’t have the new UI yet, you can still start practicing this technique in the old UI by simply using the main search field at the top of thee page (rather than advanced) Question: Can I adjust my Sales Navigator Lead builder search results so that I see someone’s headline rather than their job title? Answer: No you can’t but don’t forget that for the vast majority of profiles, the two are the same. It is worth noting that job seekers might want to consider making their current job titles a little more descriptive. As you can see in this screenshot, the information highlighted is my current job title and not my headline.
The Genealogy Gems Podcast with Lisa Louise Cooke - Your Family History Show
Genealogy Gems Podcast Episode 180 with Lisa Louise Cooke Welcome to episode 180 of the Genealogy Gems podcast! Today we're talking about big names, like Ancestry and Google and FamilySearch. We're talking about big numbers—the possible price tag for Ancestry at auction—and small numbers: a handheld computer for under $100. We're also talking about road trip tips, an important online Civil War database, a leading Canadian digital archive and EXCLUSIVE tips for using FamilySearch's free digitized book collection, which now tops 200,000 titles. And because I've gotten so much demand for it, I'm sharing tips for backing up your data at Ancestry—not just your tree but your sources and DNA, too. Mixed in with all this news and how-tos is an assorted cast of listeners-with-questions and an inspiring story about long-lost siblings reunited by radio. Let's get started! NEWS Certainly some of the biggest news buzzing around the genealogy world is the possible sale of Ancestry. Reuters that the buyout firm that owns most of Ancestry has hired investment bankers to put the company up for auction. The price tag, they say? Between $2.5 billion and $3 billion. So what could this mean for customers? Of course, it's far too soon to say. Ancestry currently delivers over 15 billion genealogy records to over 2 million subscribers. Their current trajectory includes acquiring even MORE records pretty aggressively, which we love. But as I'm sure we've all experienced at one time or another, though, when any type of company gets sold, things can change. Or we could continue to see business as usual at the shaky-leaf genealogy giant. Mybest advice to those of you whose master family trees are on Ancestry is to download and backup your data. I'm not being alarmist or saying the sky is falling here! This announcement is simply a good opportunity to do something we routinely recommend anyway. I'll have specific advice for downloading your tree, checking your source material and getting your raw DNA from Ancestry later in the podcast. In another piece of news, have you notice that Google is now answering the questions you google instead of just giving you search results with the keywords in your questions? Say you Google the question, “What county is Chicago in?” Google will respond at the top of your search results with a big, fat “Cook County” headline followed by some key facts about the county. Google's also creating a bit of a stir with its new Chromebit; it's a Chrome OS full size computer about the size of your hand, and it plugs into an HDMI on our computer. This sounds like a great option for on-the-go genealogical computing! A lot of folks aren't fully cloud-based and they really don't ever plan to be: they like to work from a hard drive or desktop of some kind. So this offers them a portable way to do that. You could plug in at a public terminal--say at a library--or at someone else's home computer, or even a television so that you could share pictures on a big screen. And best of all the Chromebit is as affordable as it is portable! reports that Google says the Chromebit will be less than $100! MAILBOX Recently we heard from Jennifer, who is taking a little road trip, as many others of us in the northern hemisphere are contemplating in June. She asks a great question: “I'm tagging along on my husband's thesis research trip to Columbus, Ohio. I have some ancestors from other parts of Ohio. I was wondering what exactly I could look for in a state's capital city's collections and archives? I was thinking that the state capital may have a “gem” that I couldn't find elsewhere, or even duplicated information [from local repositories].” Jennifer is definitely thinking along the right lines! Here's our advice: At the state government level there are often two key resources: the state library and the state archives. These might be combined. One might be called the state historical society. You just have to look for each state. In Ohio, the serves as the state historical society and official state archives. But there is also a that serves as a repository for government documents and a resource for other libraries. Each has resources for genealogists, online and in-house. Look for some links to these in our show notes. In addition, public libraries of major cities often have excellent local history and genealogy collections. This is definitely true of the in Ohio's state capital! We suggest you contact librarians before you go and ask what they have that can't be found anywhere else, both on a state level and for locales you are researching. Often times that will include photograph collections, materials on old businesses, and newspapers on microfilm. If you can formulate specific genealogical questions that you want to try and answer and share those ahead of time with the librarian that will help her guide you toward the unique gems. Every state library and archive is unique, so consulting by phone with the reference librarian is the best way to go. Recently Tom wrote in with a question about a Civil War veterans database: “I've been a listener of your podcast for quite a long time. Great job. (Thanks, Tom!) “We have a grass-roots group trying to locate and document . Is there a good website where I can enter a name and unit identification and get results of the person's [Civil War] service? I'm having a really hard time finding US Navy sailors.” It sounds like Tom is conducting a very worthwhile project! An excellent resource–but still in progress for sailors with only about 20% of them–is . The site describes its resources as a “database containing information about the men who served in the Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War. Other information on the site includes histories of Union and Confederate regiments, links to descriptions of significant battles, and selected lists of prisoner-of-war records and cemetery records.” This is an excellent resource for soldiers. As far as sailors go, the site says, “The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System currently contains [only] the records of approximately 18,000 African American sailors, though additional records will be added in the future. The information in the Sailors Database is derived from enlistment records and the quarterly muster rolls of Navy vessels." A Howard University research team is behind this stellar effort, using muster rolls to fill in missing data or correct apparent misinformation. to an article from the National Archives about African-American servicemen in the Navy during the Civil War. If a Navy ancestor isn't among those already listed, my first instinct is always to turn to Google searches first. I ran a search in Google Books for free digitized books meeting the criteria “civil war” “sailors” and there are some resources there as well. I'll put a link to these results in the show notes. Just one example? , which appears to be a published list of those who served from Manchester, N.H. You can learn more about Google searching for “niche” topics like this in the fully-revised and updated 2nd edition of my book, . Finally, we heard from Alexis with this energetic note about her ”genealogy podcast marathon:” “I just had to email you and say thank you for all you do! I am 23 and finding that I am obsessed with family history. No one around me seems to understand why but I love it. And I was thrilled when I found your podcast! Though still pretty young, I've been behind on some technologies like podcasts but now I'm addicted to those too. It makes work so much better. Though I wish I didn't have to work at all so I could just research and apply what you teach us instead. Wouldn't that be great?! I have been on genealogy podcast marathons. I'm still quite behind on genealogy gems since I just found you now in 2015 but I'm working through it! And I started a blog of course. I just mentioned you in my last post as well. It's called Geneaholic Confessions at . It's just getting started but I really want to be a part of the geneablogger community ‘cause it sounds like you guys have tons of fun! Thanks for all you do! GEM: PROTECTING YOUR ANCESTRY DATA Okay, I promised you some tips for protecting your data on Ancestry, which you should do regularly whether the site is under threat of new management or not. First, download your current tree(s) to GEDCOM files onto your computer. Under the Trees tab, choose Create and Manage Trees. For each tree you have, choose Manage Tree, then Export Tree. At this point the green button should say “Download your GEDCOM file.” Just click on it and it will download. If you're having difficulty, click “download tips” underneath the green button. I've heard that some of you have had difficulty downloading your trees to specific software, like Family Tree Maker or RootsMagic. For Family Tree Maker, read on syncing your updated online tree to your Family Tree Maker software. RootsMagic users should watch on importing your Ancestry tree into RootsMagic. Consult if you still need help. Next, check your sources! The Ancestry help section states, “Any pictures, charts, books, views, or similar items found in the original file will not be included in the [downloaded] GEDCOM. Vital information, notes, and sources are usually retained after conversion.” Check your GEDCOM to see whether your source notes are intact. Then make sure you have copies of documents, videos, photos and other items you may have attached to your tree. You don't want them to disappear, should there be a hiccup (or worse) in service. Finally, if you have used AncestryDNA, download a copy of your raw DNA data. to show you how. We especially recommend this step! These tests are expensive. Tests for loved ones who are now deceased can't be repeated. And Ancestry when the company has switched directions. (Again, I'm not trying to be alarmist about this, just cautious.) If you have relied on Ancestry or any other cloud-based service to host your only or master family tree, I recommend you do some homework and consider keeping your master tree on your own computer, and a backup file with all your other backup files. We here at Genealogy Gems use Backblaze as our backup service and we love them (visit for more information). GEM: TIPS FOR USING FAMILYSEARCH'S DIGITIZED BOOK COLLECTION So here's another tip for you. Google Books, which I mentioned before, isn't the only place to find digitized family history books online. Another free and growing resource is . They've reached a milestone 200,000 titles! This collection began 8 years ago and includes "family histories, county and local histories, genealogy magazines and how-to books, gazetteers, and medieval histories and pedigrees,” according to the landing page. Digitally-archived volumes like these are so valuable because they are immediately accessible and because they are keyword-searchable. Here are three search strategies to use for these: · Look for only a surname (in case the first name is written different ways or a different relative is mentioned). · In addition to surnames, search for the name of a neighborhood, street, church, school, business, type of work or other keywords that pertain to your family. · Use the Advanced Search feature to focus your search, like for a keyword in a title, or a type of publication like a periodical. Once you're reading a book, you can click on the info icon (a circle with an “i” in it on the upper right) to see more information about the book, including source citation and copyright information. We were curious about how well FamilySearch's digital book Viewer interfaces with mobile devices. So we asked FamilySearch. Turns out, this is still a work in progress and in fact some browsers work better than others. Dennis Meldrum at FamilySearch told us that “Safari does not work well with the Viewer.” Neither do mobile devices like the iPhone or iPad. “The Viewer works best with IE or Firefox. It also works with Chrome, but the Adobe Tools do not work. We are aware of the limitations of the Viewer and are working to replace it by the end of the year." GEM: CANADIANA DIGITAL ARCHIVE Speaking of digital libraries and archives, I've got a great one to share with you. If you have Canadian roots, you should be searching Canadiana () regularly for family history information. Recently described Canadiana as “a digital initiative of extraordinary scale,…a joint effort of 25 leading research institutions, libraries and archives working together with the goal of creating Canada's multi-million page, comprehensive online archive.” Its digital collections chronicle Canada's past since the 1600s and most of its content is free. For example, the free “aims to digitize, preserve and make accessible Canada's archival materials for Canadians and the world." Their large collection of genealogy materials so far includes immigration records, church records, land records, family histories, voters' lists and more. Military history, government documents and aboriginal records are also well-represented. Check back often! More is coming, like and records of the Another part of Canadiana is . This gateway to digital collections from 40 repositories points to 65 million pages! Sample subjects include Ontario genealogy and War of 1812 campaigns. This portal is also free to use. One part of the site that's awesome but NOT free? , with 5 million images already and expected to grow to 16 million. A subscription will run you $10/month or a year for $100, says that site, I'm assuming in Canadian currency. This is “a full-text collection of published documentary material, including government documents and specialized or mass-market periodicals from the 16th to 20th centuries. Law, literature, religion, education, women's history and aboriginal history are particular areas of strength.” The site describes itself as “the most complete set of full-text historical content about Canada, including books, magazines and government documents.” Tip: scroll down on the home page to click the Genealogy and Local History portal, but don't ignore the rest of the site! GENEALOGY GEMS BOOK CLUB This month we feature a meaty excerpt from our interview with Nathan Dylan Goodwin, author of . Genealogy Gems Premium subscribers can access the full interview in this month's podcast episode. He tells us how he got started; we talk about the plot and characters and the challenges of creating genealogical mysteries with dangerous consequences for the present and more! DNA GEM: INTEGRATING GENETICS AND GENEALOGY TOOLS Our very own Diahan Southard, Your DNA Guide, joins us now. She talks about how the ideal genetic genealogy interface creates a seamless transition between genetics technology and genealogy research. AncestryDNA, she says, is really pioneering the integration with its newest product update. Read more about it PROFILE AMERICA Here's a this-month-in-history from . Ninety-one years ago this June, "Congress passed — and President Coolidge signed — the Indian Citizenship Act, which stated 'all noncitizen Indians born within the territorial limits of the United States be, and they are hereby declared to be, citizens of the United States: Provided that the granting of such citizenship shall not in any manner impair or otherwise affect the right of any Indian to tribal or other property.' "Prior to this act, about two-thirds of American Indians were already citizens by other provisions. Universal voting rights lagged until 1957, as various state laws were amended. Today, there are over 2 million single-race American Indians possessing this full citizenship and 566 federally recognized tribes." Wow, I had no idea there were so many federally recognized tribes! I close today with a story Contributing Editor Sunny Morton recently read about long-lost relatives who were reunited. We hear lots of stories like that now, relatives who rediscover each other online or through DNA tests. But this story happened in 1926! Sunny found the story in a newspaper article. The children of a man named Alonso Jones were sitting around one day listening to the radio. Then they heard the announcer say, "Alonso Jones, wherever you are, listen...Your sister wants to see you at Worthington, Ohio. She has not seen or heard from you in forty years. You were born at Antiquity, Meigs County, Ohio, at the time of the Civil War...." "You were reared by Captain William Roberts, an Ohio River flat boat man. You went with him on a produce boat when you were a boy and ran away while the boat was lying at the bank in Arkansas." The article reports that the man telegraphed his sister and arranged to meet her. All because she'd had a dream that the radio could help her find her brother, and she tried it, and it worked. What an inspiration! It reminds me of the value of thinking outside the box, of using all available technologies, and of never giving up when we are looking for family. Forty years after she lost her brother, she still thought of him, and she finally figured out how to find him. Click below to visit our YouTube channel:

That road they were on: the Blue Ridge Parkway is indeed maxed at 45MPH. However it is important to note that the Blue Ridge is a narrow windy mountain road, and in a normal reasonably priced car, 45 feels speedy. Fun fact: that road is a National Park, and runs for hundreds of miles thru many states. It is also one of my favourite roads to drive on (which I do a lot as it runs relatively close to my house). The speed limit on the road I take up the mountains to the Parkway is 55MPH. There are plenty of Interstates that do 70MPH on the east coast. Hi Oh Beep, I see you have been getting on with working out 2 puzzle caches - have you managed to go out and find them yet? February Challenge. As Feb is the month of love and as some people declare their love for each in church, your challenge for this month is to find 5 Church Micros. On Sunday, although we didn't set out to do it, me and The Old Soldier collected 15 Church Micros. I know this is nothing compared to some people who go out and get up to a hundred in a day but it was good for us, especially as we hadn't intended it. Now this should be quite an easy task for Dr D to achieve (unless you have already done them) as there are lots in Beeston area!!!! If others want to try the challenge too and don't have church micros in their area, they can find ones with 'church' in the title. Good Luck Searching Denise aka Ey Up Me Duck GeoFleaz Competition.. What is the tagline printed on every Geoflea? The Obligatory Doctor Who Bit.. I am not sure if you have seen this, but, while not geocaching-related, as a fellow Dr. Who fan, I thought you and Dr.D might enjoy BTW - I started watching back in the Jon Pertwee (#3) era, when there was no CGI and cardboard monsters were the stuff of legend. Tom Baker is still the best Doctor, sorry Dr. D. I hope to hear Sophie back on the show again soon. GManSan (aka Gerry) P.S. Dr. D needs to learn the word to the Celebrate song, by Kool and the Gang. It's "Celebrate good times, come on!" Not sure what he's saying, but it's not that.

Feedback.. From Dave Debaeremaeker.. Heya Mark & Sam I am 2/3rds of the way thru episode 56, but had to pause when I pulled into the parking lot at work. I'll catch the rest on the commute home, but for now I have some comments. First of all, the Americans do have an annoying way of formatting their dates. Month-Day-Year. In Canada (and I believe in the UK aswell) they do Day-Month-Year. I can never keep the dates format straight between the two, so I typically go in the proper sort order:Year-month-day, or just spell it out : January 12, 2015. Second, re: the comment from the fellow who did 800 miles and 4 events in a single day. I don't think you fully appreciate the joy that is a good long road trip. Britain is simply not large enough to get the experience of many many hours spent on the open highway, with the tunes cranked, the engine rev'd, and watching the world pass by your car windows. Driving can be dang annoying when there is a lot of traffic but there are many places in the US where you can drive for hours on our interstate highways and barely see another car. Those are the roads that many a car-based rock anthem has been written about. As for the date of 12-13-14 (Yankee formatting), I also had an adventure that day. I have a group of geocaching friends - we call ourselves Team Awesomesauce - that goes on big adventures together. On the date in question two of our group (FailedApparatus and HoosierSunshine - pronounced: Who's-yer-sunshine) were hosting a geocaching trivia event that evening in Columbia South Carolina.Columbia is about 3 hours from my house, so I left early on that morning, met up with the group in Charlotte North Carolina, and together we cached ourselves to Columbia. Along the way we did some amazing caches. I blogged about the adventure here:http://debaere.blogspot.com/2014/12/team-awesomesauce-rides-again.html I also have a shot of a clock taken at 12-13-14 15:16;17 (3:16 PM) to mark the occaision:http://debaere.blogspot.com/2014/12/12-13-14-151617.html Speaking of interesting dates, Pi day is coming up. March 14th.i.e. in Yankee formatting 3-14. This year is special as 3-14-159:26:53 is pi correct to the first 8 decimal places. There are many folks in the US that are planning events around Pi day (yay for math geeks!) Finally the translation of Doctor D's Australian accent was comedic gold. Well done. Cheers From Ey Up Me Duck Before the New Year me and The Old Soldier sat and discussed (I said what I'd like to do and he listened & agreed!!!) our geocaching aims for the year and came up with the following list. 1- to listen to the Oh Beep show the week after it is aired. I am currently very bad and tend to listen to them in batches, although I have nearly caught up & only have about 10 older episodes to listen to now (the May & June ones) 2 - to find (and log Dr D!!!) 3000 caches this year. This is to go towards a challenge set by Nadiagoescaching during the year. 3 - To try and clear a 10km radius from house 4 - To clear at least another 60 days from our date found calendar (currently at 242/366 days). 5 - To complete and find at least 10 Challenge caches - I think we managed to grab 3 or 4 of these at the weekend!!! 6- To complete DT grid (12 to go) 7 - To cache in at least 10 more English counties (currently 31/46 counties) 8 - Find some Little Quest Caches (currently 1/48) – to get us into double figures at least 9 - To find 20 more caches to help go towards completing the Jasmer Challenge (caches placed – months since geocaching began) - (140/176) 10 - Find any caches in area with favourite points of over 25 From Misha.. I am GC member Misha, Looky what I found while I was listening to your latest Podcast near Truro, NS, Canada. It began as a nice sunny minus 24°C and the sun warmed us to -12°C a great 40 cache hike, I was at #34 Hidez 57. Union Jack GC5EA21 Thanks for podcasting Nemesis Geocaches.. Defined (to end Doctor D's refusal to accept those proposed). A cache must be searched for and not found on at least 3 separate occasions to be classed as a Nemesis Geocache by Doctor D. Dumb Stuff Geocachers Do.. From StaticJay.. Just had two disabled caches of mine found which is weird because the containers are sitting in my workshop. People play their own way, but Geocaching isn't hard. Smartphones make it easier than ever. GO OUTSIDE, YOU MIGHT ENJOY IT! Ask Doctor D.. Doctor D, I enjoy listening to your podcast very much but feel that your offensiving is lacking when it comes to those with disabilities and I wanted to give you a chance to put this situation right. I am blind but still manage to Geocache with my family but reckon the mighty Doctor D must have some advice that might help me be a better cacher, after all you do know everything… and you are a doctor, so please, What advice do you have for blind geocachers? Cheers Paul aka washknight http://washknight.wordpress.com GGH Tips.. The secrets of NiMH (batteries) - GGH 116: Batteries III The Ey Up Me Duck Challenges.. I have also decided to set the Oh Beep team a Monthly Challenge and see how many (of the 12) you achieve by the end of the year!!! I have taken into consideration that you don't like caching much when it is too cold (or too hot) so you have more time to spend at home, sat in front of your laptop or with a pen and paper. Also because January has already started I will give you until the end of February to complete this challenge (but you'll still get one in the first week of Feb too!!!). So my first challenge to you is to work out (solve) and find 2 puzzle caches. I am giving you about 6 weeks to complete this which I don't think is too difficult. Me and Ady went out on Sunday and managed to find 20 puzzles, so 2 in 6 weeks is very doable (is that a word!). Annoyingly when we got in late that evening, a challenge cache had just been published by TeamTriplet asking for 25 puzzle caches to be found in a day!!! - we were gutted BUT far too cold to go out again! If you want to know of some of the easier ones out there let me know and I will tell you which ones to look at! That's all from me for now. I'll be listening every week now to see how you are getting on with my challenge

Silver Surfers: Internet Use by Older AdultsWe reported on a very interesting infographic recently on the Genealogy Gems blog called Interesting Stats: In 2012 Baby Boomers aged 47-65 spent an average of 27 hours a week on the Internet Of the seniors that are online, one in three are using social media. A big change from just back in 2009 when only 13% of seniors online were using social media. In fact 1 in 5 Twitter users are over 50 49% of online seniors have a Facebook account Seniors aren't just socializing, they are shopping too. 59% of seniors online have made a purchase online in the last 3 months Here's what you had to say on the : From Sheri: "Lisa, My sister and I met you at RootsTech this year. We're already planning next year's trip! I read the article about silver surfers and just wanted to say that when I was a kid (Fairbanks, Alaska) we had party-line phones, one TV station! My mother wrote letters to her family in Idaho regularly and long distance phone calls were very rare! I'm a baby boomer and have always been interested in technology. I do most research online with Ancestry, Fold3, FamilySearch, etc. I haven't jumped into the blogging pool but who knows! I'm currently starting to work on suggestions from your Google Earth CDs, putting together family tours. Love your podcasts. You are my favorite "source". Sheri" From Diane: "Thanks for the article about the silver surfers. I saw you when you spoke to the San Diego Genealogical Society and learned a lot. I am a major social media user. I am on many FB groups, use Twitter, Pinterest and have my own genealogy blog. I am a baby boomer. Party lines were in use when I was a kid and for parts of my growing up our household didn't even have a phone. Here is a link to ." From Sandee: "When I was a kid, we communicated mostly by letter -- which soon fell by the wayside because they took so long to write, were full of scribble-outs and add-ins, and had a long turnaround time. Phone calls were for really important stuff and emergencies. When I went to college, my parents gave me a tape recorder and several REELS of tape so I could send oral "letters" home (which I don't think I ever did). My dad read the Dick Tracy comic strip and said that someday we really would have wrist-worn telephones and would be able to see each other as well as talk. In spite of all the complaints about constant contact via cell phones and text messages and emails, modern-day communication seems to foster friendships." Check out Candace says: "When I was young we had a party line with 8 families. We weren't supposed to listen in to other conversations, but we all knew which ring indicated the best news." Candace's memories remind me of the Andy Griffith show! From Lynn: "You asked about seniors and 'net usage. I mostly use e-mail and delight in being able to stay in touch on a daily basis with my 94 year old cousin in Michigan. She is the only person in her assisted living facility with a computer.” Thank you to our sponsors: MAILBOX: Natalie in TX has success with one of Lisa's Tips: “I attended your 3 classes this past weekend at the Houston Genealogical Forum and I really enjoyed them as I do all of your classes. I have done a lot of work already on newspapers for about 20 years with interlibrary loan and traveling to libraries and newspaper offices out of town. My small towns' newspapers so far have hardly shown up online but slowly that is changing. So when I finished your class I used some of your Google search tips on some newspaper sites. Some things worked, others didn't but one thing I'm glad you mentioned was do not overlook was if a hit came up on a newer date, not to overlook it. I went to the Old Fulton Postcards website and he mainly has New York newspapers on his site but he also has The Rogersview Review from Rogersville, Tennessee. So I found several hits on that site but the one I wanted to tell you about was I was looking for my 3Great Grandfather Williamson Tucker and there were a few hits but one was in 1995 and the other was in 2001. So I clicked on the 1995 article and it was a picture of New Hope Baptist Church and the first two sentences said "New Hope Missionary Baptist Church was established in 1833. It was given in a land grant by Williamson Tucker in memory of William C. Bailey." Then the 2001 issue which was a listing for Hawkins County churches and had New Hope on it, and it gave a little more info that William Bailey gave land to the church but never made a deed for it. He then died and then my ancestor Williamson Tucker acquired the land from the Baileys and then deeded it to the church. Wow, I did not know that, and I probably would have skipped over those two hits because they were so late dated. So thank you for the tip! I've been writing a paper on my grandfather the Rev. Ellis Birl McLain who was a Methodist minister who lived in many places and so far I have found him in 15 different newspapers in six states so I really do know the importance of searching newspapers.” Linda from South Australia writes in about Dealing with Chaos: “I just read your advice on ‘dealing with the chaos' (a problem that has been tormenting me for ages) and a very bright light went on in my head when I read your suggestion for using Evernote to store things for future research. I use MS OneNote to store some of my loose bits of genealogy info, but I haven't organized them well. I'll use your tip – the simple idea of having a ‘future research' section for each family makes me feel better already! The harder part will be putting something in there, leaving it for later, and then going back to what I was looking for in the first place – I'm easily distracted! Especially when someone I'm NOT looking for turns out to be more interesting than the one I AM looking for.” Del in California has been busy using Google Earth for Genealogy: “I finally got around to watching the Google Earth video CD I purchased from you last January when you were here. I have been doing the map overlays, which is really a neat feature…It served a practical use, as I have a plat map of the whole of Bent County, Colorado upon which I have marked all the locations where we own mineral rights (passed down from my grandfather). I can then use the transparency feature to compare the holdings with the actual topography. I also have overlaid plat maps of various ancestors who had original land patents in Indiana, Colorado, and Ohio. A couple of the ancestors donated land for cemeteries, which I have visited and are visible on Google Earth and marked on the overlay maps. Fun stuff…would not have been able to actually make it work without the CD.” book GEM: Project Lizzie – An Interview with Ron PloofWe're all working on our own family tree, but have you ever considered working on someone elses? Someone you've never met and you don't know their descendants? Storyteller Ron Ploof is here to share how and why he took on such an endeavor, and some of his successes and challenges along the way which he is documenting on his new website Project Lizzie at In this interview we head back to 1976 when Ron was 13 years old, and helping his uncle who had just bought a house in Massachusetts. Exploring as 13 year olds do, Ron found something intriguing in the attic of that house – a stack of 99 postcards tucked away. He's held onto them for the past 38 years. Ron was always fascinated with the pictures on the front of the cards, but in 2012, he started studying the stories on their backs. And that's when he could see that 86 of them were addressed to a Mrs. Lizzie Milligan and postmarked between 1904 and 1925. He has spent the past year-and-a-half trying to learn as much about her, including a trip from California to Massachusetts to find her gravesite. Ton started publishing Lizzie's story online in February of this year. Ron has asked his readers to join in the hunt, which begs the question: Why should his readers care? It's a very important question, because we all have had a non-genealogist relative ask us the question: Why should I care? Even when they are related to the person! If we can share the why, we can more successfully share the journey. 2/24/18 UPDATE: Read the final installment on Profile America — Wednesday, September 17th On this date in 1787, the Constitutional Convention wrapped up in Philadelphia with the delegates accepting the document and sending it on to the states for ratification. Less than two years later, the new U.S. government had to take out a loan. This week in 1789, Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton was in negotiations to borrow nearly $192,000 from the Bank of New York and the Bank of North America. The money was needed to pay the salaries of President Washington and the members of the first Congress. The loan was obtained in February 1790 and paid off in June. Today, the president's salary is $400,000 a year — more than twice the amount of the first loan — and the debt of the 50 united state governments is around $1.15 trillion. Sources: Kane's Famous First Facts, 1104, 3804 Coping and Exceling through Techological Change Recently I was teaching an online class, and one of the students was stumped because the class materials said to use the Advanced search link on Google.com and it wasn't there. She stopped worked and posted that she couldn't do it because the link wasn't there. This is a perfect example that we really need to cultivate our problem solving skills in today's constantly changing online environment. I totally get that it can be frustrating to visit a familiar website or refer to something in a book (or a class!) and find that things are not as they used to be. In this case, Google removed the "Advanced Search" link from the Web Search and Image Search home pages. And I've had situations where I went to teach an iPad class, and the night before a new operating system was released changing practically everything! However, if we come to expect change then we won't have to be quite so surprised and frustrated when we run into it. And of course in most cases that change is really an attempt by the website to improve and evolve, although that can seem debatable when it's something you enjoy or depend on. When you run up against change, you are better equipped than most to deal with it. As Genealogists the sleuthing skills we have honed become our greatest assets! The quickest way to determine what's going on when something changes online (which again can happen nearly every day) is to just "Google It!" After reading the student's message, that's exactly what I did, because I didn't have the answer on the top of my head either. So I went to Google.com and searched on: google advanced search no longer on home page. The results quickly led me to the answer: At both the Image Search page (google.com/imghp) and the Web search page (www.google.com) the Advanced Search has been moved to "Settings." Simply click "Settings" in the bottom right corner and you will find "Advanced Search" there as one of the options. The good news is that chances are, if we've noticed a change, others are already talking about it online, and often will have already shared the answer. "Googling it" is often the easiest way to determine what's going on, so that you can get on with your family history work. So until we meet here again, get on with your family history work!

Hi, and welcome to the Open Licensed Music Podcast, the show where we highlight music from artists who let you share their music. I'm Ralph Wacksworth, and today's episode is featuring chiptunes.Skyball (3:17)BossaNova (1:17)Chairborne Boogie [IT (48K)] (3:22)Asymmetrical Mode; ON (1:54)Itty Bitty 8 Bit (3:13)Spiff Tune - And so it Begins (2:53)Dstort (3:31)Colored Pixels (3:34)That was Skyball by DJ Bouche, BossaNova by 8-BITchin'tendo, Chairborne Boogie [IT (48K)] by ipidev, and Asymmetrical Mode; ON by Claudia Andrea Hermosilla, all four of which are available from SoundCloud and are licensed under an Attribution license. After that was Itty Bitty 8 Bit by Kevin MacLeod, which is available from incompetech.com and is licensed under an Attribution license. Then we had Spiff Tune - And so it Begins by Spiff Tune, which used to be available from SoundCloud but has since been removed and was licensed under an Attribution license as of February 1, 2013. Next up was Dstort by ChrisLody, and finishing up was Colored Pixels by 8-BITchin'tendo, which are both available from SoundCloud and are licensed under an Attribution license. This week's another Attribution week, so feel free to reuse this music. Or, for that matter, the parts where I'm talking if you somehow found a good use for it. The Attribution license is a wonderful thing. On that note, since this podcast is all audio, I should mention a few resources for Attribution-licensed visual media:- First, the photo sharing website Flickr. If you use their Advanced Search function, you can limit your searches to only those which are licensed as Attribution or possibly Attribution Share-Alike. They have some excellent photos on there as well as lots of stuff you can use as pieces of things.- DeviantArt is also very good. They don't provide a nice Creative Commons search feature like Flickr, but they do offer Creative Commons licensing choices for works uploaded to their system and there are a few groups dedicated to building collections of CC-licensed works. One such group is Creative-Commons which also has instructions for how to use a search engine to find Creative Commons works on DeviantArt under particular search terms. Bit of a hack, but there is some very nice artwork on DeviantArt which doesn't quite fit on Flickr, though not as much is under pure Attribution licenses.- OpenGameArt is another one. I've mentioned them before and I'll mention them again. They have 3D models, tile sets, sprite sheets, music, textures, sound effects, and much of it under very permissive licenses. With the resources on OpenGameArt, you could truly build a game without having to create any of the artwork from scratch. And, with that, it's high time we get back to music.Darker Waves (1:55)Deathmatch Psycho (2:37)Usual Day (3:01)JRPG_fields_loop (2:01)Some Dealings With The Office Of Magic (3:24)Pure NES (1:03)Strawberry Tea (1:45)Yerzmyey - Ai (4:21)Vectorverse Tier 2 (4:14)Blow into the cartridge! Then we had Usual Day [NSF (Classical)][FCM10] by ipidev, which is available from SoundCloud. Next up was JRPG_fields_loop from the JRPG Collection by Yubatake, which is available from OpenGameArt. After that was Some Dealings With The Office Of Magic by elmusho, Pure NES by Sam Shideler, Strawberry Tea by Tenlki, Yerzmyey - Ai by YERZMYEY, Vectorverse Tier 2 by Nicholas Shooter, and finishing up was Blow into the cartridge! by Nicholas Shooter, all six of which are available from SoundCloud. All ten songs in this set are licensed under an Attribution license.Today's app-of-the-day is Audacity. Audacity is a fairly full-featured open-source audio editing and effects program. It's what I used to record my voice and edit this podcast together. One of the features I like about it most is its noise cancelling functionality, which I've been able to successfully use to remove noise even in situations where the noise was about as loud as the signal, and even when commercial solutions have fallen flat. It's cross-platform as well, so whether you're running Linux, Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, or I think BSD, you can still use it. Download it today at audacity.sourceforge.netNow for a short noncommercial break from one of our nonsponsors, followed by more music.LibrivoxWrong Kind Of Tea (1:59)Mean Streets (3:00)Kamaria's OP (1:38)JRPG_town_loop (2:14)Yerzmyey - Proof of concept (2:36)Khone - Sirius (1:31)That was Wrong Kind Of Tea by elmusho, Mean Streets by Firage, and Kamaria's OP by Patashu, all three of which are available from SoundCloud. The ITS ServiceDesk Search Bundle is a set of tools which enables easier and more granular searches in the Service Desk Process Manager portal. It consists of three separate projects which allow for different types of searches. The tools are separate pieces, which can be installed separately and run individually by customers. Process Search – Adds ability to execute ad-hoc searches of tickets by text or by contact. Process Search Advanced – Adds ability to execute ad-hoc searches of tickets by text, contact, assignment, status, priority, and other discrete fields on Service Desk tickets. Quick Ticket Search – a small bonus tool which enables quick searches based on ticket ID/number.

You'll get the largest search results by just searching by last name. Look over the results to narrow down all the possibilities. Try adding first name next. Some combinations of first and last names are more difficult to find exact matches for than others (e.g., John Smith). But if you have an unusual name like Jared Quackenbush the search will only return a few results. Next, if you know the location enter a full state name in the Place search. There are some results in their databases, such as for Google Books, that may not come up via the geographic. Don't forget to try alternative spelling for a surname. Additional Search Tips: Entering a date is best when you only give a year. If you already know a lot about an ancestor and now want to know specific information, try the Advanced Search. Use broad search terms, not an exact year of birth. Although you may know this information, mistakes may have been made in a document, or a first name may be abbreviated (e.g., Geo* is a good search term for George or J* may bring up a John that is otherwise listed as Jn). Excluding a source from a search because you have exact knowledge about an ancestor could lead to less accurate search results. If you need to create an advanced search with a lot of fields, it may not be ideal to use a GET request as I showed in episode 37. In this episode I will show you how to handle this by creating a Search resource.
