Episode 124: Last month I shared that I helped co-author a book called, There's More Than 1 Way to Skin A Cat. We've got 2 NBA, 3 Division 1 and 5 European Basketball performance coaches contributing to chapters on mobility, stability, power, agility, periodization and recovery. I received my copies of the book last month and they turned out awesome. For anyone wanting to buy a copy, make sure you reach out to @silk_man on Instagram, and Luka will take care of you. And so Today's episode is another sneak peak into our book, where I interview the 9 coaches and ask, “what's your thought process on reducing ankle sprains.” And then you get to hear exactly how the Chicago Bulls, Denver Nuggets, Kansas Jayhawks and Louisville Cardinals do it here in the states. And you'll also get to hear how professional teams in Istanbul, Brescia, Jerusalem, Slovan and Maccabi do it in the European Leagues. My goal for this episode is to prove that there really is more than one way to train & condition basketball players. Ramsey Nijem's mom worked multiple jobs to put food on the table for her family and give them the opportunity to excel. So it's no surprise that he worked so hard in college that he finished his master's and doctorate in half the normal time and ended up working as an assistant strength coach for the Sacramento Kings just a few short years later. It took years for the Kings to lay the foundation for their recent return to the NBA playoffs and Ramsey was on site pouring concrete and laying bricks every day, often for 15+ hours. He was one of the first strength and conditioning coaches to integrate data-driven decision making, but always pursued a person-first, athlete-second model. He could've stayed at the Kings or in the league for his whole career, but when Bill Self came calling, he moved on to KU. That very next season, Jayhawks like Christian Braun – now an NBA champion with the Denver Nuggets – led the team to a national title. In this episode, Ramsey shares:· How his dog and a gold chain changed the course of his life· What he sacrificed to accelerate his education and professional development in elite performance· How he implemented sports science thoughtfully with the Kings· Why most people think about NBA load management wrong· What powered KU basketball to the 2021 NCAA Final Four and a national title· Why he embraced life in Lawrence· Why Bill Self is such a great coachKeep up with Ramsey on Instagram @dr.ramsey.nijem and check out his 8-week course and certification for up and coming strength & performance professionals at https://www.appliedperformancecoach.com/

Episode 13- Dr. Ramsey Nijem by Max Artsis
Injuries can be huge setbacks for competitive athletes. Everyone has a certain window of time in which they can play their best. Time out of competition is time lost that can’t be recovered. For some, they can end a career. The question dovetails well with episode 46’s discussion of workload management, but obviously that’s not the whole story. Dr. Ramsey Nijem gives us insight from his doctoral thesis, as well as his work with professional athletes. There are some great takeaways for coaches, athletes…and even powerlifters. Here are some of our thoughts: What lifestyle factors outside of training might lead to injury? Does drinking or drug use make injuries more likely? How are outcomes and training effects different? Does it help get stronger period, or does it matter how strength is incorporated? How much is controllable? We kick off the conversation by wondering if 25 should just be the legal age for everything? Dr. Nijem earned his Doctorate of Science in Human and Sport Performance as well as Health Promotion and Wellness in 2018. He has published research in top scientific journals in strength and conditioning and is currently investigating injury risk in NBA athletes. He earned his B.S. from UC Santa Barbara and M.S. from Cal State *Fullerton’s Center for Sport Performance (where he studied with Dr. Andy Galpin). After several years as head Performance and Strength Coach for the Sacramento Kings NBA franchise, he recently became the Men’s Basketball Director of Sport Performance for the University of Kansas (KU Jayhawks), one of the top Division 1 college basketball programs. Josh Washington is a S&C Coach with the University of Auburn men's basketball team where he helped the program make the Final Four in 2019. He has previous experience with the Sacramento Kings, University of Stanford and Marquette. Like Josh, I started my post-college career working in a field that had nothing to do with exercise science. We both made our way to this field through self-discovery and a love of training and even both had our cars totaled/stolen while in grad school. I loved hearing Josh detail his journey and be challenged by the likes of Dr. Ramsey Nijem and Cory Schlesinger. His insights on asking questions and challenging the status quo were particularly poignant for me as I think that is the mindset we all need to have to evolve the profession. Having met Josh last year the Bay Area Sports Symposium, I saw Josh's passion during the roundtable that featured the entire Sacramento King's staff and knew I had to get him on the show. Josh has had some big moments in his career already and has met all of them with that same passion. His authenticity and care for the craft has set in motion what is sure to be a memorable career in S&C. You can find Josh on Instagram: @strengthcoachjw

How do you balance the strength and conditioning work of an athlete with the practice, and actual performance, of their sport? Dr. Ramsey Nijem gives us insight from his doctoral thesis, as well as his work with professional athletes. There are some great takeaways for coaches, athletes…and even powerlifters. Here are some of our thoughts: How is exertion in a game setting quantified? How much is based on personal observation versus some automated system? What role does sleep play? How much do food, and alcohol, choices affect everything? Does travel screw things up as much as you’d think? Are there emotional factors that seriously impact performance? How can a coach help an athlete improve their recovery? Dr. Nijem earned his Doctorate of Science in Human and Sport Performance as well as Health Promotion and Wellness in 2018. If you’re strength and conditioning coach, you probably want to work with athletes. If you can, you probably want to work with professional athletes. How do those opportunities come about? And will striving to get there make you an all-around better coach? We asked Dr Ramsey Nijem, who a few year ago became probably the youngest every head strength coach in the NBA, to break it down for us. Here are some of our thoughts: What are the degree requirements? Which certifications are really necessary? How do you learn to handle professional athletes? How much is programing and how much is psychology? What do you have to do to prove yourself to management? Is there a clear career path? Today’s episode features strength coach Sheldon Dunlap, one of the most creative strength coaches I’ve met who is doing big things with strength training for speed enhancement. Sheldon has been a strength coach at UC Davis 3 years, one of his primary sporting assignments being track and field. Prior to UC Davis, Sheldon was a strength coach for the NBA D-league Erie Bayhawks and was an intern at Duke University. I first met Sheldon at the First Annual “Bay Area Sports Performance Seminar” put on by Dr. Ramsey Nijem, as we sat at a table together while listening to presentations. In learning of some of the things that Sheldon was doing in the weightroom with his track athletes, and the impact it was having on their performances, I discovered I was sitting next to a young pioneer in our field. Today’s show is all about Sheldon’s strength system for track, which has unique ideas in the sequencing and integration of oscillating reps, as well as training methods for the hip flexors (TFL in particular) and the feet. This is an awesome “nuts and bolts” episode with training ideas that anyone can instantly integrate into their own system (as I have). Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points What Sheldon is doing with his track program’s strength and conditioning How Sheldon got into tendon elasticity considerations in his program How Sheldon replaced the isometric phase of Triphasic Training with an oscillating isometric phase The types of lifts Sheldon used in his program Sheldon’s approach to hip flexor work, specifically TFL work How skateboarding impacted Sheldon’s long jump takeoff Sheldon Dunlap Quotes “Tendon elasticity is the name of the game in track and field” “I replaced the isometric phase (of Triphasic Training) with oscillating work… we had our Blue and Gold meet that year and people were getting PR’s left and right, left and right” “The first time around I did this we did two weeks of eccentric, two weeks of oscillating, and then they went home, and I used 5-3-1 for their concentric phase while they were at home” “I want a “black mini band” type of athlete (an athlete who produces more movement power respectively through the power of the fascial system” “(After a deep oscillating squat phase) I felt like lightning coming out of the bottom of the squat, but I got stuck halfway up” “After going TFL pops, the next day after bounding, my TFL had never been so sore in my life” “The stronger your TFL is the less you have to rely on your psoas” “In skateboarding you are able to produce a lot more elasticity because you are putting your foot on the ground with a great amount of force in a small amount of time” Show Notes Oscillating squats https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOZHVwKfCOM TFL Pops https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=su4xw9h4pKc&feature=youtu.be About Sheldon Dunlap Sheldon Dunlap has been a strength coach at UC Davis 3 years, one of his primary sporting assignments being track and field. Prior to UC Davis, Sheldon was a strength coach for the NBA D-league Erie Bayhawks. Prior to the Bayhawks, he spent 2.5 years as an intern at Duke University. Sheldon attended Appalachian State University and is certified by the NSCA.

In our fourth episode we catch up with the Sacramento Kings’ Director of S&C and Performance, Ramsey Nijem. For the past two years, Ramsey and his team have worked hard to develop an impressive performance facility, focused on player autonomy, cross-department communication and creating an environment of what Ramsey describes as, “being coachable.” This ethos creates a cohesive teaching structure allowing both athletes and coaches a unique opportunity to learn from each other and constantly improve. From adjusting loads and trialling new technologies to valuing the athlete’s preferred communication methods, like Instagram DMs, Ramsey and his team are taking on a new wave of training with insights you won’t want to miss.
