Tribe Sober - inspiring an alcohol-free life! My guest this week is one of our loyal Tribe Members – John Rishworth is from Canada and has just celebrated 8 months of sobriety. After drinking heavily for years John got some counselling to help him come to terms that he would have to make some changes but as he says it was joining the tribe that gave him the connection and support that he needed to put these changes into practice. In this episode John was in sales and marketing and describes the work hard/play hard culture which prevailed – I think many of us have worked in corporates that have encouraged long hours compensated by drinking sessions sponsored by the company. He was surrounded by heavy drinkers and used to suffer colossal hangovers. He talked us through one of his Friday night drinking sessions which could easily escalate into 20 units – a lot when you think that the low risk limits are just 14 units – a week! He always would have described himself as highly functional but looking back he realises that he was not operating at full capacity. As we always say even if alcohol doesn't destroy you it will prevent you from reaching your potential. The sad thing is that when we are drinking we get used to feeling below par – we always feel tired in the mornings (due to poor quality sleep) – I used to think it was all part of getting older – but now that I am older and alcohol free I realise it was the alcohol that was wearing me out! That's why so many of us get quite evangelical about sobriety – its been years since we've felt so happy, healthy and energetic! When John realised that the only thing that would alleviate his all day hangover was a drink he began to realise that he needed to make some changes. But the real clincher was a hospital stay which involved some liver tests resulting in medical advice to give up drinking completely John was distraught after hearing this advice and I think many of us can identify with that feeling he experienced on the hospital gurney – that feeling of life being over if we can't drink… That's an indication of the stunning job that the alcohol industry has done to convince us that we need their toxic product to enjoy our lives! And that's why it does take “work” to reverse these limiting beliefs – which is exactly what we help people to do at our regular Zoom workshops (go to ts.com – services for more info) After his hospital scare John did stay off the booze for a few months but then the doctor told him that his tests results had improved so he could have the odd glass of wine – so John had to learn the hard way that he had already crossed the line with his drinking and there would be no going back… On Fathers Day 2021 John decided that he was going to stop drinking – and that he would find a way to do it – and shortly after that he found tribe sober. The biggest step of all is to accept that you are alcohol dependent and then to reach out to get some help – then the HOW will get clearer.. Many people eventually get to that stage when they know that they are “done” with alcohol – they are sick and tired of being sick and tired – if you feel that way then don't despair because it's a good thing – now you just need to find the HOW. – you need to find other people on the same path John explained that when people are struggling with alcohol they tend to isolate – I think this is because society expects everyone to be able to drink “normally” which means that the 20% of social drinkers who do become dependent feel that there is something wrong with them! Women especially have to walk a kind of tightrope – if we don't drink we are “boring” but if we get drunk that's not cool either! That's why a sober community helps so much – we meet other people who are struggling (so we can ditch the shame – its not just us!) and we can meet people who have ditched the drink and are enjoying their lives. Whereas most of us tend to mix with “normal” drinkers who can take it or leave it or heavy drinkers who will assure us that we are fine! John explained that being in the tribe connected him with like minded people and gave him a place to go where he could share his ups and downs and hear about tools that could help him. Helpful tools for John have been quitlit and podcasts as well as the Alcohol Free drinks. John made a conscious effort that he would still drink in bars with his friends and still be fun even though he'd be drinking alcohol free. John is a natural extrovert so this was not too difficult but for some of us we may need to “fake it until we make it” but it will get easier with time. We heard about his first Sober wedding when he experienced some mental anguish beforehand - (would he or wouldn't he drink on this occasion?) – this was an issue he raised at one of our Zoom Cafes – eventually he make up his mind that he would NOT drink at the wedding and he would find a way to manage however hard it was. This is important - if we go to an event thinking that we will decide whether or not to drink when we get there it is almost inevitable that we will drink. So just as John decided that he would stop drinking and find a way to do it – he decided he would not drink at this wedding – and find a way to do it. This approach saves a lot of mental anguish! We talked about recovery and the fact that it is never linear and of course different for each of us – reflecting back on his 8 months of sobriety John remembers the early days when he was hyperfocused and used all stickers and trackers to check off every single alcohol free day whereas these days he tends to count months rather than days as sobriety becomes the new normal. Of course like all of us he occasionally questioned his decision and had the urge to pick up the scotch but he used his toolkit – connected with the tribe and played the movie forward.. Johns top 3 benefits - no more hangovers, no more wasting time and not functioning at full capacity - he's much more honest with himself these days being part of the tribe where he enjoys the authentic connections and inspiration.. mentioned that there were people that would pick vegetables and fruits and things and then they'd come to like your father's market and some to your dad and sell them to you know some to some of the other markets around there. And there was a lot of grocery stores or markets in that in the north side back when you're growing up and where you are.Absolutely. And the one that I'm talking to is talking about with just 16 before you go over the river and you go into Medary there. Some area right there you end. Grow with vegetables and stuff and then ride his bike into the north side in a big basket from Pebble the stuff two small grocery stores and some of the bars and the Vogue and Oni's restaurant that he's way back through they get their stuff. And I was just again part of that simple life of the north side.So Oni's was actually attached to the word the vogue right. And that was the find out that was fine dining.Back in the day as much as you can get from one to the other inside but you could get into Oni's or just into the vogue on the roadside so that the Bridgeview plaza area when that popped up what used to be there prior to that it used to be Wilkerson's sand pit a very large sand pit. And it was filmed by dredging out the Shaku Bay which is the river outside. See the river used to be you see all river came down each channel. But they had to have sand to fill and developing the Shopko center there with all the sand pits that were around. We've talked about a couple of them that you brought up is that where the kids like you and your brothers and sister used to play baseball or was there other places to play baseball. Actually we played ours in the alley behind the bombers.By her house here. There's a softball. We play softball hard. All but. Two the street and I mention the what used to be a hotel there cross that street and off to home base was at my neighbor's garage and the telephone pole over there was first base and a second base was dug out there and third base hey it was another natural part of the parking area. And we believe there are that kind of of a perpetual game going near all summer long. Did you guys use baseball gloves and bats and real balls or did you end up using what was going in there in balls but mostly not the last. Few gloves that show up but you weren't really that needed. And so you ever had a homerun.I don't know. Probably did at one time or another.Cause you could do it over one of the Alongi either one of the people who lived with St you could hit it over his shack on the back of it where he kept his and neck gets to be playable and that could be a homerun because first base was here and he said he was quite a character he would you work on the railroad and he had a boat on a pushcart and he would push it down to the river and fish all day and come back and pull it back at night.Yeah.Fish and you don't see that nowadays. I mean people people got there. Well I don't know if you watched any of the the bass masters when they were here with their you know hundred thousand dollar boats and their electronics and there that's going to find the fish for you. Not like casting all the time and real and in new ones. You know yeah I know they're real good from my own history of living there please. And you know there's somebody told me there is a pontoon boat and some dock around here with 2 400 horse on it. Wow. Yeah that's what they said. Well because I used to have a 21 foot pontoon boat with a 50 horse Mercury with it's called the Big Foot bottom. So I think it's more power to push the boat and I'd pull over water skiers and everything with it but I can't. Well we were only broke sons bought. On Father's Day and we saw a couple of these boats going 60 miles pontoons 60 miles an hour down the river. You know they're not enjoying it. You got to enjoy that go slow it just take it all in.When we still have that pontoon boat with my son's office was up there in the building on the river there and the L.H.I building up and wife and I we take we just like to go out for a little boat ride during the day and we get down here and park the boat. Just let it sit in the middle of the river. Comparators office. I'm on the phone. The. We're having a good time when you don't go with us.Except that it is just fun job.How many times did he take you up on it once. How many kids you have. I count three. Are they all musical candy. Oh. In fact. One of the most fun things we did as a family is my wife is that crazy principal. My wife playing the organ and the four of us singing songs in four part harmony and they were older by this time of course but we used to do it. We've got a CD called The Temte singers or something I've kept with the title is that we did and right. So music was really a part of our life. I was with a guy with a little parlor organ pump organ and I said Yes I have a picture. Of growing up on George Street and we win those little ones. Or anything you know and a picture of my mother sitting playing and the four of us kids and my sister's youngest couldn't have been over eight or nine so me. My oldest brother. 13 or 14 and reaching Christmas music in four part harmony and my father of them went to out and let them come the people that lived in the neighborhood that they could come and he would set up a little manger scene and my brothers we all day and proper bathrobes with scrapes on them you know the Manjari. My sister always had to be Mary she hated that and we put on the little show singing some carols and my mother playing a little organ and the people come in and just love them. But that was part of that. There was nothing that unusual or dramatic. It was part of that simpler people still getting together and enjoying each other.Do you miss the simple times.Oh yes. Try to try to maintain it as much as I care. But it's there's too much hectic going on around you to really say it's the simple times and I'm getting older so I'm going to be 40 years old this year. Celebrating the 40 anniversary of 40.

On Father's Day 2018 (6/17), Elder Michael Gowens takes an intensive look at the story of one father's internal battle as he seeks help for his afflicted son, recorded in Mark 9:14-29. This sermon focuses on the profound admission of need in verse 24: "Lord, I believe; but help thou mine unbelief." Pastor Gowens insists that this plea for help is the reality in which each of us lives--a reality in which both genuine faith and grievous fear coexist in the heart. How wonderful to know that we have a heavenly Helper in the Lord Jesus Christ, who is able both to remedy the maladies that concern us, and to strengthen our own frail faith!

Steve Smith :: Creekside Church :: Sunday, June 17, 2018 Courage should inspire. On Father's Day, Steve Smith closes out our Portraits of Faith preaching series with a message from the book of Esther about Mordecai, a Father figure of sorts, exploring 3 facets of his courage that compel believers to follow his example. Mordecai's counter-culture stance should comfort us and challenge unbelievers to trust in God rather than turn away from Him. Who are we courageously speaking up for?
On Father's Day in 1974 Freeman Palmore's father passed away and at 17 years old he denounced God. What was to follow was 28 years of drugs, alcohol, infidelity and male prostitution that took him away from his wife, 3 daughters and son from another woman. Freeman Palmore never taught his children about God. He believed God had left him, but it was he who turned his back on God. Freeman abused drugs and alcohol and cheated on his wife until he was finally kicked out of the house. He made his way to New Orleans where the substance abuse continued and Freeman became a male prostitute to pay for his addictions. There he had a son, but soon left for California and the Costa Rica. In 2002 a near death drug overdose sent him into rehab where he rededicated himself to God and his family. Dino and Freeman also discussed: Abuse Infidelity Addiction Prostitution Trust in Christ Parenthood Repentance Making amends This is Freeman's testimony. On Father's Day, Dave spoke about the Father Heart of God. Questions When Jesus said 'I will not leave you as orphans' (john 14:18) what do you think he meant and how would he accomplish this? Though we may well know the biblical truth about our relationship with God as Father we can often struggle with acceptance and approval issues. How can we deal with this?? Dave encouraged us that the Father brings hope to our heart and read the following encouragement "Help emerged as I began to explore entering the silence, not in some rural idyll but a desert space where I might hang out with God and converse with him about who I was. It was within this silence I discovered I was deeply loved by God, had always been known by God, that God was more deeply embedded within me than I’d ever known. Slowly I stopped measuring myself against my views. I exchanged insecurity derived from my uncertain friendshipse for the security of knowing God. The restless anxious chatter in my head, while never stilled, lost its power to determine who and how I showed up in life. My inner anxious self was shattered and hope was birthed, a hope with which to wage war against the internal chatter that made me doubt myself, lose my confidence and constantly compared me to others." Do you think you could do this more yourself?
