I cannot believe that that is our last episode traipsing together through the gospel of Matthew. Did you count? I did. We spent 33 episodes together. What a journey! The Gospel of Matthew has been teaching us the life of Jesus from a culturally relevant perspective. Matthew uses "show, don't tell" moments to convey essential cultural clues. We've explored how Jesus' teachings impacted the people of his time. In the first 12 chapters of Matthew, we mainly focused on Jesus' teachings in plain sight. But after chapter 12, things take a different turn. Jesus starts using parables and begins teaching privately to his disciples. One thing that really stands out is how the Pharisees got antagonized by Jesus seemingly breaking the Sabbath. But Jesus was quick to challenge their understanding, accusing them of not truly knowing the Scriptures and confronting their hypocrisy head-on. Throughout these chapters, Jesus emphasizes the importance of a surrendered heart over external sacrifices. He claims to be the Lord of the Sabbath, equal with God Himself. Talk about a bold statement! It will cause massive ripples effects, all the way to the other side of the cross. The sacrifice of Jesus was the last sacrifice. Let that sink in. Jesus, our Savior, is seated at the right hand of God, signifying rest and authority. Wow. Prophets and Psalms challenge us to know, hear, taste, and see God's goodness. So, let's immerse ourselves in His Word and experience His presence in a whole new way! Let's close with this thought: intimacy with God is made possible through Christ and a worshiping heart. As we read and hear Scripture, let's truly understand its depths and apply it to our lives. We are here to encourage you to seek deeper intimacy with God, week in and week out. Thank you for joining us each week. Let His words penetrate your heart and transform you. Let's experience His love and live surrendered lives. And remember, friends, surrender your heart to God, and watch Him work wonders in your life. Are you looking for a place to take notes, some topics to research on your own, or some questions you could ponder to go deeper during your quiet time with God or with a friend? Remember, we have workbooks available for this episode, and every other episode of our Jesus Rabbi and Lord series. For each episode, they contain a summary, listening guide, key takeaways, quotes, questions and topics to go deeper. Go to gospelspice.com/jesus to purchase these workbooks. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to sit alongside Jesus and his initial audience? To experience the fresh spiritual flavors that the Messianic Jewish culture weaves into the four gospels? Well, that's exactly what we here aim to do through this original series, JESUS RABBI AND LORD.

We are almost wrapping up our time together with Matthew. Can I say this is bittersweet for me? So, following from last week, I invite you to continue our intriguing journey into the world of Jesus' parables! Last week, we laid the foundation by understanding the purpose of parables - fulfilling prophecy, focusing on individuals with faith, and describing the kingdom of God. In Matthew 13, Jesus begins his teachings on the mystery kingdom, which plays a crucial role in the epistles of Paul. This mysterious kingdom sets the stage for the parables we're about to explore. Let's start by unpacking the parable of the wheat and the tares. Picture a man sowing good seed in his field, only to find weeds sprouting among the wheat later. Jesus explains privately to his disciples that the good seed represents the sons of the kingdom, while the weeds symbolize the sons of the evil one. The field is the world, and the enemy is the devil. What's fascinating is that true sowing of God's word will always be countered by false teachings. False gospels, trying to soothe the human heart, preach salvation by works. But the true gospel is salvation through God's grace in Christ Jesus alone. Jesus emphasizes that the true and false teachings will coexist until judgment day. So beware of false teachings and remain steadfast in the truth of God's word! Moving on to the parable of the mustard seed. A tiny seed, but when it grows, it becomes a towering tree where birds come to nest. The kingdom of heaven starts small but expands mightily. This parable symbolizes the growth and influence of God's kingdom. It reminds us that even the smallest beginnings can lead to great impact. So let your faith be like that mustard seed, growing and spreading far and wide! As we immerse ourselves in these parables, let's remember that Jesus is teaching all Christians across time and space. Not everyone who claims to be a Christian truly belongs to Christ. Let our lives reflect the truth and reality of a surrendered heart! Keep seeking, keep growing, and keep shining your light in the world! Are you looking for a place to take notes, some topics to research on your own, or some questions you could ponder to go deeper during your quiet time with God or with a friend? Welcome on Gospel Spice! I could not be happier to have you with me today as we dive deep into the parables of Jesus, asking His help to understand His message to us today. Parables have always been a powerful tool used by rabbis to reinforce conventional wisdom. But when Jesus sits down and starts speaking in parables, he adds a sprinkle of mystique that captivates His audience. Matthew 13:1-3 tells us that Jesus wasted no time once He was openly rejected in Matthew 12 (see previous episode). And these parables reveal what lies ahead as a result of his generation's rejection. But why parables? Three reasons stand out. First, Jesus came to fulfill prophetic teachings (Matthew 5:17). By using parables, He connects the Old Testament prophecies to His message and shows that the Messiah spoke in parables too. Second, parables shift the focus from mass appeal to individual faith. Jesus emphasizes the importance of personal belief, rather than trying to convince the masses. Thirdly, Jesus respects our free will and wants our faith to be genuine. He could have performed undeniable miracles, but He loves nothing more than a heart filled with faith. Faith and sight cannot coexist, and He leaves room for questions, so we can choose to believe. So, buckle up as we embark on a journey where parables unravel the mysteries of the Kingdom of God. From fulfilling prophecies to focusing on individual faith, these teachings hold the key to understanding Jesus' message. I promise you a feast for the mind and soul as we dissect each parable and discover the layers of meaning within. There's so much more to explore in the New Testament and the Old Testament! The parables highlight the consequences of the generation's rejection of Jesus. These stories hold deep significance for over 2000 years of gentile-dominant Christendom. Intriguing, right? So, let's savor the spiritual spices and flavors that the parables have to offer. As we feast on the Gospel of Matthew, we'll gain insights, wisdom, and a fresh perspective on Jesus' teachings. The finish line is just ahead, but the journey of faith continues! Even as we get ready to soon bid farewell to Matthew after almost eight months within the pages of his gospel, our spice journey continues! With just a few episodes left in the Gospel of Matthew, we're reaching a bittersweet finish line. Until then, let's unwrap the rich layers of the parables together today! Why did Jesus make the offer of Messiah to a generation He knew would reject Him? It's a burning question, and today, we're diving deep into Matthew 12 to unravel this mystery. Get ready for a mind-blowing ride! Let's start with a personal story. I recently reached out to a loved one, eager to share my faith in Jesus. I knew the possibility of rejection was high, but my heart was sincere. Just like Jesus, I offered love, knowing it might not be accepted. In Matthew, Jesus extends an offer of Messiah to His generation, fully aware that they would reject Him. Why? Well, because He is omniscient. God knew the response beforehand. But here's the mind-bending part: the offer wasn't completely removed. It was postponed. The rejection of Jesus by that generation of Jews was a part of God's ultimate plan for redemption. Their rejection led to something remarkable - the church age. You see, the church age, which we are in now, is a brand new revelation that stemmed from the Jews' rejection of Jesus. God didn't mention the church age in the Old Testament because it depended on the Jews' decision. It's like prophecy, watching mountain tops from a distance. The Old Testament prophets didn't see the valley of the church age between Jesus' first and second comings. It's in the New Testament, available to everyone, that the secrets are revealed to those who listen. The church age is a mystery unfolding. The New Testament was written quickly by a generation who knew Jesus or were close to someone who did. They recorded the teachings and acts of Jesus, including His plea for the generation to embrace Him as the Messiah. Even individuals from that initial rejection group, like Nicodemus and Paul, were granted grace to change. Paul became the apostle to the Gentiles, revealing the mystery of the church age. Jesus started teaching this mystery to individuals after the nation rejected Him. In Matthew 13, Jesus shares parables that provide a timeline and description of what will happen. The church age continues until Jesus comes again. We are in this incredible, unpredictable chapter of God's plan. So, why did Jesus offer Himself as Messiah to a generation He knew would reject Him? Because God's perfect plan unfolds through rejection, grace, and redemption. The rejection of Jesus by the Jews is the ultimate redemption for believers. Awe-inspiring, isn't it? I am so glad you are with us today on Gospel Spice. Join us as we dive into the transformative power of Jesus and the mosaic of people forming the Kingdom of Heaven! Let's explore the rich tapestry of stories in the Gospel of Matthew and discover the incredible ways each person adds their unique flavor of mint.  Last week, we met a leper, a gentile centurion, and a bold woman who challenged the rulers. Now, we're introduced to Matthew himself, a former tax collector who boldly declares Jesus as Messiah. I invite you to join me and witness Matthew's gutsy conversion story. It is moving, tender, and powerful. He leaves everything to follow Jesus, and in doing so, publicly defies the rulers. Jesus' reply to the Pharisees' question about eating with tax collectors and sinners exposes their own merciless contradictions – and honors Matthew's young faith. Next, Jesus addresses fasting, and specifically, why His disciples don't fast like the Pharisees and John the Baptist's followers. He explains that the bridegroom, Jesus himself, is here, and it's a time for celebration. Fasting will come when he's taken away, showing the importance of regular fasting for seeking God's will. Jesus goes on to challenge the Pharisees' reliance on the Oral Law and emphasizes the fulfillment of the Written Law through His work on the cross. The Pharisees are sure to get hysterical over this! The intertwined stories of Jairus and the bleeding woman showcase the unwavering faith that unites people from all walks of life. Jairus, a synagogue leader, and an unnamed woman who defied the Law to touch Jesus's tassels, both find hope and healing in Messiah's surpassing grace. As we continue to experience Jesus ever deeper as our Rabbi and Lord through the eyes of Matthew, let's remember that each person in the Kingdom of Heaven adds a unique flavor of mint. Their stories of faith, courage, and redemption remind us that Jesus invites us all to be part of this incredible mosaic. I could not be more delighted to have you tagging along with me in the hallowed pages of Scripture today. I hope you will find your faith strengthened, and your time well used. Thank you! Click here: gospelspice.com/blog What matters to us here at Gospel Spice is to create a place where people who seek deeper intimacy with Jesus, will find Him. We want a warm, welcoming atmosphere to journey ever deeper into the heart of God. We believe it is the ultimate calling of the Christian life, and I like to summarize it with my motto, God's glory, our delight. That is why we invite you to “taste and see” that the Lord is good. And we have been doing this every day since 2019. We need YOU to keep Gospel Spice alive and growing.   Financially speaking, we rely on people who understand this vision and who understand that we cannot function without a minimum budget. We run an extremely tight budget. For example, I work full time but don't draw a salary. And yet, we have expenses – for example, the equipment and technology we use, and also the wonderfully gifted staff who make it possible to deliver high quality content all around the globe, and then the necessary occasional promotional budget to make it possible to be discovered by those who seek to live a life spiced with the gospel of Jesus Christ. We need your help.   So we would love for you to consider if this ministry is blessing you to pay gospel spice forward. You can partner with us monthly with 10, 25, 50, 100, a month, or you can make one donation, once. And because we are a register nonprofit organization in the United States under the status of a 501c3 charity, it means that the amount that you pay to gospel spice is fully tax deductible. Completely tax deductible. So you're even saving money as you invest in gospel spice ministries. It is an eternal investment, and we are very grateful to you for it. Now it's very important to us that we give back as much as possible from what you give us. And so we commit to giving the majority of what we receive, once all of our administrative costs are paid, to organizations that fight human trafficking on the front line. There are many worthwhile causes in the world, so why this one? Because I have always personally felt deep compassion for victims of human trafficking – maybe because I have never been its victim myself, so I feel a responsibility to help those less fortunate than me. Also, because Jesus tells us to love our neighbor. Human trafficking is modern day slavery, and that is something that revolts the heart of God. We want to play our part in raising awareness and then financially supporting those who fight this great evil.   So, we do some due diligence. We pick organizations who have proven themselves trustworthy of our support. And then we give money to these Christians organizations that fight human trafficking. So would you consider paying us forward at gospelspice.com/payitforward? Your hard-earned money is always well used at Gospel Spice. Ultimately, you are giving back to the Kingdom, a portion of what Jesus has given you. We are well aware of the privilege to steward your partnership. And my prayer is always that you will find your own life spiced with the gospel as you partner with us to flavor the lives of those around us, near and far, with the spice of the gospel. Did you know that mint isn't just for freshening your breath or adding flavor to your food? There are over 600 types of mint, and each one has its own unique flavor profile, ranging from pineapple to chocolate to lavender. Mint truly is a multitasker in the world of spices. Just like the citizens of the kingdom of heaven, who come from all walks of life. Mint needs a humid soil to produce richly scented leaves. Similarly, we need Jesus, the water of life, to bring flavor and meaning to our lives. Without Him, we're just flavorless grass. Let's be like mint and embrace the diverse flavors within the kingdom of heaven! Now let's shift our focus to the citizens of the kingdom of heaven. Jesus welcomes everyone, regardless of their background or past. It's like a minty guest list, including lepers, Romans, women, and even former zombies. Yes, you read that right! A Roman centurion, an unlikely candidate, amazed Jesus with his great faith. He recognized Jesus' authority and knew that just a word from Him could heal his servant. Faith, not abilities or background, is what truly amazes Jesus. Next, Jesus heals Peter's mother-in-law, showing His compassion and power. He touches her hand, and she is instantly healed. Just like mint, which has the power to refresh and invigorate. He took our weaknesses and carried our diseases. Throughout these events, Jesus challenges the religious norms and surprises everyone. He invites us all to be citizens of the kingdom of heaven, regardless of our past. So, let's embrace the diverse flavors within the kingdom and the fresh minty scent of Christ. Stay tuned for more stories about the kingdom of heaven and how it functions. We will explore the parables and discover the flavors and tastes within the kingdom. There's an exciting adventure ahead! Remember, just like mint, you have a unique flavor to bring to the world. Embrace it and let your aroma be pleasing to God. Are you looking for a place to take notes, some topics to research on your own, or some questions you could ponder to go deeper during your quiet time with God or with a friend? Last week, we witnessed a powerful moment in history - the transfiguration of Jesus Christ. As we stood on that holy mountain with Peter, James, and John, we were immersed in the glory of God. But there's so much more to this incredible event. Let's dive deeper into the significance of the transfiguration. In Exodus, we see Moses encountering God on the mountain and coming down with a radiant face. But when Jesus is transfigured, His glory shines even brighter, revealing that the glory is not from without, but from within. Jesus is the light that shines in the darkness. Matthew's account of the transfiguration challenges the Jewish audience. Jesus is not just another prophet; He is God Himself. The presence of Moses and Elijah only emphasizes this truth. They, the great prophets of old, bow down to Jesus, showing His superiority. But why did Moses and Elijah choose to discuss Jesus's departure or exodus? They were there to encourage Jesus as He prepared for His upcoming death on the cross. They reminded Him that His sacrificial death would lead to His restoration and our salvation. Moses and Elijah symbolize two groups of believers. Moses, who prefigured Jesus, represents the Old Testament believers who died in faith. Elijah points to the future believers who will be translated into God's presence at the rapture. They represent us all. Jesus fulfills the law and the prophets, ushering in a new age - the age of grace or the Church. This revolutionary concept was challenging for the Jewish audience. Jesus greatly surpasses the law and the prophets. He came to fulfill them, and through His death and resurrection, a new kingdom - the mystery kingdom - was established. The Book of Hebrews reminds us that God initially spoke through the law and prophets, but in these last days, He speaks to us directly through His Son, Jesus Christ. He is the radiance of God's glory, the exact expression of His nature. Let us listen to and delight in Him! The transfiguration is a profound revelation of who Jesus is. As we join Peter, James, and John on that mountain, we are reminded of His divine glory, His sacrificial love, and His fulfillment of the law and prophets. Let's allow this truth to transform our lives. May we never forget the transfiguration, the glorious moment when Jesus's true identity was unveiled. He is the Son of God, the Light of the World, and the fulfillment of all prophecies. Let's live our lives in awe of His glory and share this Good News with the world! Are you looking for a place to take notes, some topics to research on your own, or some questions you could ponder to go deeper during your quiet time with God or with a friend? Welcome to Gospel Spice, the podcast that explores the beautiful and transformative message of the Gospel. In today's episode, we dive into the powerful and profound topic of the cross. This is part one of a two-part series during which I invite you to join me to seek to plumb the depth of surrender, the sacrifice of Jesus, and the significance of our personal choice in response to His offer of salvation. I invite you to explore the concept of surrender and how it requires us to access the strength of God Himself. We'll journey through a prayer of weakness and wrestle with the question of finding a true friend with whom we can share our deepest emotions. The strain on creation during the judgment of Jesus' crucifixion becomes evident, as we ponder how creation could handle the death of the Author of life. We'll dive into the separation of Jesus from the Father and the Trinity on the cross, paying the ultimate price for our sins. This sacrifice is a fact, and it is offered to every person. It's up to us to make a personal decision about this offer, regardless of what others have done. We'll emphasize the importance of taking Jesus' kingdom offer personally and approach the weighty topic of the cross and resurrection with fear and reverence. Throughout history, there have been many authorities, experts, and opinions, but in this episode, we'll discuss the long-lasting authority of God's Word, highlighting its endurance over cultures, trends, and fads. While humans and their opinions may change, God remains steadfast and trustworthy. We'll dig into the significance of the Old and New Testaments, uncovering the prophecies that have been fulfilled and the messianic miracles performed by Jesus. We'll explore the choice of surrender that each of us must make, understanding that just like a physical leper, we all have spiritual leprosy and can only find healing through God's direct intervention. Get ready to journey deeper towards the heart of the love of God, as we navigate the depth of the cross and all that it represents. From the incarnation to the resurrection, we are presented us with a choice: what will we do about the truth and beauty we encounter? Join us as we unravel the unity and harmony of the Trinity sacrificed for humanity's benefit and explore the power of surrender and the incredible grace found in the blood of Christ. So grab your Bible, your journal, and a cup of coffee, and join us for this eye-opening exploration of the cross. It's time to spice up your faith and dive deeper into the heart of the Gospel. Welcome to Gospel Spice! Are you looking for a place to take notes, some topics to research on your own, or some questions you could ponder to go deeper during your quiet time with God or with a friend? Remember, we have workbooks available for this episode, and every other episode of our Jesus Rabbi and Lord series. Welcome back to another episode of Gospel Spice! I have the humbling privilege to be your teacher, which is a role I take with utmost seriousness and a deep desire to steward your trust well. Thank you! I am thrilled to dive into today's topic: the Passover meal. We have so much to unpack in this episode, from the significance of unleavened bread to the powerful imagery of the cup of redemption. But before we dive in, let's quickly recap the previous weeks where we explored the events leading up to Jesus' crucifixion during Holy Week. From his announcement of his impending death to the Pharisees' attempts to prevent it during Passover, there is a rich tapestry of events to explore. One highlight we'll focus on today is the radiant act of devotion by Mary of Bethany, who anoints Jesus with expensive perfume as a symbol of her love and gratitude. We'll dive into the deeper meaning behind this act and how it ties into the overall theme of Jesus as the bridegroom and us as his bride. That is speaking directly about YOU! Now, I must apologize for the sound quality of this episode. It was recorded live, and it is not as good as a studio recording. As a perfectionist in trying to bring you the highest quality sound, I faced some challenges, but I hope that the message itself will inspire awe and worship of Jesus Christ. Speaking of worship, we'll also be exploring the Old Testament roots of the Passover and how it finds fulfillment in Jesus. From the story of Moses and the Israelites to the symbolism of unleavened bread, we'll trace the threads that beautifully connect Scripture and glorify God. So, get ready to invite the Holy Spirit to captivate you through the intricate details of the Passover meal, the power of Jesus' sacrifice, and the call to live in a way that honors him. We'll be drawing on various passages to shed light on this timeless topic, including John 14:1-23. Thank you for joining us on this journey. Now, let's uncover the extraordinary significance of the Passover meal and how it points us to the transformative work of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Are you looking for a place to take notes, some topics to research on your own, or some questions you could ponder to go deeper during your quiet time with God or with a friend? Rethinking the standard of being "good enough"

Bonjour! Stephanie here. I invite you to join me today on a nostalgic trip to my grandmother's attic, where the scent of dried lavender transported me to the enchanting landscapes of the south of France. But as we explore the allure of lavender, we discover that sometimes its promises can be misleading. Just like the pursuit of independence, when detached from God, can leave us empty-handed. Drawing from personal experiences and family history, I invite you to discuss the inherited traits and tendencies that shape our lives. What have we received from our ancestors, and what are we passing down to future generations? Let's explore the dangers of trying to measure up to a standard of goodness and the toxic effects of pride and shame. Our modern culture, saturated with self-centered ideologies, contrasts sharply with the biblical perspective on sin and righteousness. Through the lens of the Old Testament, we discover the importance of aligning ourselves with God's ways rather than seeking our own. I want us to highlight Jesus' interpretation of the 10 commandments, because He reminds us that we have all fallen short and broken each one. Temptation, like the scent of lavender, surrounds us, and our natural inclination to believe we can be good enough on our own is a consequence of sin passed down through generations. Our 21st-century Western culture tends to be self-centered and narcissistic, but the Bible paints a different picture. It emphasizes that God's standards are what truly matter, regardless of our feelings of success or failure. Murder and anger, adultery and white lies, all bear the poison that separates us from God. The story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden reveals the danger of seeking independence from God. By desiring their own way, they ingested the forbidden fruit, causing separation from the goodness and trustworthiness of God. Choosing our own way over God's leads us down a path of evil, twistedness, and untrustworthiness. So, if you're curious how misapplied lavender relates to our pursuit of independence from God, join me on this highly personal journey. Let's open the family album of the Old Testament together and uncover the truth about sin, good deeds, and the hope offered by the Gospel message. Remember, temptation is often laced with lavender, enticing us to believe that we can rule our lives better than God can. But in truth, true hope, peace, and fulfillment can only be found in surrendering to His ways. Bonjour! Stephanie here. I really hope this new episode finds you well and nourished with the Spirit of the Gospel. I am honored and delighted to bring you a new episode of the Gospel Spice podcast, diving deeper into the topic of baptism. In our previous episode, we uncovered the deeper meaning of baptism and explored its significance in the life of Jesus. This week, we continue our journey of discovery and unpack the rich symbolism and connections surrounding baptism. We pick up where we left off with the baptism of Jesus, and dive into the Trinity's presence and the symbolism of the dove as the Holy Spirit. But the connections don't stop there! The prophet Jonah comes into the picture to give us profound parallels between Jonah's encounter with water and Jesus' baptism. As we delve into Matthew 12, we remember how Jesus refers to Jonah as the ultimate sign, connecting His impending death and resurrection to that of Jonah's three days in the belly of the fish. I invite you to take a fresh look at the significance of this connection and how it points to the central message of God's grace and salvation offered to all through Jesus Christ. Remember, the Gospel Spice podcast is all about digging deeper into the mysteries of the gospel and applying its truths to our everyday lives. So, join us on this journey of faith as we uncover the treasures hidden within the Scriptures. If you have any questions or topics you'd like us to cover in future episodes, feel free to reach out. We love hearing from our listeners and tailoring our content to meet your needs! Thank you for being a part of the Gospel Spice community. Hi! Stephanie here. I am so glad you joined us today for a special dive (no pun intended!) into the experience and meaning of baptism. I want us to explore the parallel between the dyeing of fabric with a new color and our own transformation through baptism. Just as the fabric takes on a new identity and value, so do we as we embrace the added worth found in Christ. We become members of God's family, clothed in the righteousness of Christ, and equipped to live out our faith in the world. Consider the message behind baptism: As believers, we are called to don the colors of our favorite team - Team Jesus! Baptism represents our identification with Jesus Christ, His message of grace and salvation, and His cause to share the good news with the whole world. It's a public declaration of our faith and a symbol of our new identity in Christ. But what about Jesus' baptism? He had no need for purification or repentance, as He was without sin. So, why did He choose to be baptized? It marked the beginning of His earthly ministry and revealed His role as the chosen Son, marked by God's love and the delight of His life. I also want to invite you to ponder anew the importance of delighting in the glory of God and making Jesus the delight of our lives. Baptism serves as a reminder of God's deep joy and love for us, just as He declared Jesus to be the delight of His own being. Remember, as we proudly wear our brightly colored jerseys, let's continue to identify with Jesus, His message, and His cause. Let's live out our new identity and share the good news with the world. Together, we can make Jesus the delight of our lives, just as He is the delight of the Father. Stephanie invites you to dig deep into Scripture, unearthing raw diamonds that may need a little cleaning up, but will ultimately shine brightly. So get ready to embark on this enlightening and transformative journey with Gospel Spice. Prepare to encounter Jesus in a way that resonates with our modern world and discover the richness of the gospel through the lens of Jewish culture. Let's dig deep, uncover the hidden spices, and experience the beauty of the Scriptures together. Welcome to Gospel Spice! Epiphany: Embracing Christ's glory and manifestation

Gospel Spice

As we enter a new year, I invite you to consider the feast of Epiphany as it calls for a deeper understanding of the manifestation of Christ's glory in our spiritual journey. A philosophy rooted in the meaning of Epiphany has profound implications in bringing light and knowledge of the glory of God in Christ Jesus. Epiphany serves as an invitation to delight in the manifestation of God's glory through Christ. I invite you to experience the celebration of Epiphany in the Eastern and Western churches, highlighting the diverse ways in which Jesus reveals His glory to the world. This celebration commemorates pivotal events such as the arrival of the Magi, the baptism of Jesus, and the miraculous wedding at Cana, offering profound insights into the multifaceted manifestation of Jesus's glory. Here are 5 key things I hope you will take from our time together today: 1. Understanding the Christological nature of epiphanies and their relevance to our faith journey. 2. Exploring the celebration of Epiphany in Eastern and Western traditions, and the different ways Jesus manifests His glory to the world. 3. The historical and biblical significance of the Magi's visit, and why their worship of Jesus is a pivotal moment for both Gentiles and Israel. 4. Uncovering the deeper meaning of the wedding at Cana and its connection to spiritual growth and abundance in the Christian life. 5. Embracing the concept of waiting between epiphanies as a means to discover deeper trust in God. Stephanie mentions the book Epiphany by Fleming Rutledge. You can find it HERE. Want more? Here are some of the topics we cover together today: Jesus' Glory in Light and Darkness Contrary to the belief that Christ's glory is confined to moments of transfiguration, His glory is ever-present, permeating through both light and darkness. Through the lens of John 1:1-14, I invite to recognize Christ's manifestation not only in moments of splendor but also during challenging times, even amidst the crucifixion. This profound insight prompts us to seek and cherish the epiphanies that illuminate Christ's glory in our everyday lives. The Importance of Waiting Between Epiphanies The concept of waiting between epiphanies offers a poignant reminder of the journey of faith. Together, we emphasize the value of learning to trust God more deeply, echoing the truth that the wait between epiphanies unveils spiritual growth and fortitude. This underscores the significance of patience and perseverance as we anticipate and appreciate the epiphanies that reveal the glory of Christ. The Invitation to Delight in the Manifestation of God's Glory John 1:1-14 is the quintessential Scripture passage encapsulating the essence of Christ's manifestation and glorification. The passage vividly describes the incarnation of the Word and the manifestation of God's glory through Christ, emblematic of the purpose that Epiphany serves in illuminating the magnificence of Christ. Root of the Greek Word "Epiphany" and the Transfiguration Event The Greek word "epiphany" originates from the idea of a sudden realization or manifestation. Scripture draws our attention to the ultimate epiphany - the transfiguration event, emphasizing its link to the concept of light and darkness in the gospel of John. This event is a powerful demonstration of Christ's glory and divinity, highlighting the transformative nature of epiphanies in illuminating God's presence in our lives. Exploring the Traditions and Symbolism of Epiphany Together, let us ponder the rich traditions surrounding Epiphany, as I share my personal experience within the Anglican Church, emphasizing the importance of learning from early Christian traditions and connecting with the roots of Christianity. There is much value in embracing the wisdom and traditions of our Christian ancestors! The anticipation for deeper revelations and epiphanies about the beauty and power of Christ resonates deeply, leaving us with a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunity to partake in this transformative journey. I hope and pray that our episode today will embolden you in your quest to discover and cherish the manifestation of Christ's glory in our lives, urging us to wait with hopeful hearts, aligning with the deeper trust in God's plan. As we embark on this spiritual odyssey, may the Epiphany season kindle an unyielding flame of faith, guiding us to behold the radiant manifestation of Christ's glory in every moment. From the Magi's homage to the miracles at the wedding of Cana, every event fuels our hearts with the radiant presence of Christ.  4/ The theme of Epiphany is an invitation to delight in the glory of God as it is made manifest in Christ. It's a celebration that bridges Christmas to Easter and Pentecost with the central focus being the dazzling glory of Jesus Christ.  5/ Beyond the celebration lies the essence of waiting between epiphanies. Christmas at the Tower of Eder

We pick up where we left off last week with the second half of Stephanie's deep-dive into the Christmas story from the perspective of Mary. We were joking that Joseph, through Matthew, gave us a very concise version of Jesus' birth, while Mary, like most moms, has a lot more details to share! And indeed – it took one episode to cover Josepha's account, and two episodes to cover Mary's memories of the birth of her first born Son, Jesus our Messiah. Don't forget! Go to gospelspice.com/Christmas for a LOT of FREE and beautiful inspirations to make this Christmas your most Christ-centered and Gospel-spiced one! And also, brand new line of Christmas merch at gospelspice.com/merch - don't miss out! One fascinating aspect we discuss is the meaning behind the name Jesus, which was commonly used at the time and carried deep significance. Stephanie also explores the mystery surrounding the exact date of Jesus' birth, leading to a discussion about the potential timing of his conception during the Passover season. The Tower of Eder, mentioned in Matthew's account of the murder of innocent babies in Bethlehem, becomes a thought-provoking symbol. This tower, associated with the raising of sacred sheep destined for sacrifice, offers a glimpse into the symbolism of Jesus as the ultimate sacrificial lamb. Stephanie invites you to experience the ceremonies of circumcision and the redemption presentation at the temple, shedding light on the profound significance of these ancient rituals and their connection to Passover. We invite you to immerse yourself in the beauty of the Christmas story and discover your own calling this holiday season. As always, we are grateful for your continued support and appreciate your engagement with our podcast. Stay tuned for more inspiring content, captivating discussions, and fascinating insights as we navigate the depths of Scripture together. Wishing you a blessed and joy-filled Christmas season! MORE DETAILS The nature of God is revealed in humility and sacrifice. Jesus, who did not consider equality with God something to be used for his own advantage, made himself nothing, taking on the nature of a servant and being made in human likeness. Because of Jesus' humility and sacrifice, God exalted him to the highest place and gave him a name above every name. Every knee should bow and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father. Do you see the connection? Christmas, the incarnation of God on earth, is intricately linked to the cross and resurrection, leading us to the eternal reign of Christ. It's a powerful reminder of the ultimate gift we receive during this season. Let's dive deeper into Luke's account of Mary's encounter with an angel. She is called "highly favored," a phrase only used twice in Scripture. This echoes Ephesians 1:6, where it's mentioned that God chose us before the foundation of the world, according to his favor and will. The Greek word used to describe Mary's favor is the same word used to describe God's favor towards believers in Ephesians. It means that it gave God great pleasure. Can you believe you are being highly favored like Mary? You are! The tower near Bethlehem, where Jesus is born, is known as “tower of the flock,” or “tower of Eder.” It holds significant biblical connections: it is the place where sacred sheep were raised, destined for sacrifice. Jesus was born in the same place the lambs were readied to be killed on behalf of the people! And the famous Christmas shepherds were watching over THAT flock at night. Now, let's talk about the circumcision and presentation of Jesus at the temple. Both events were customary for Jewish families. They symbolize redemption and the giving of the child back to God. This mirrors the Passover, where the lamb was sacrificed to redeem the firstborn. The redemption ceremony also foreshadows Jesus' ultimate purpose: to buy humanity back for God. Just as Mary and Joseph bought Jesus back for the people, he will later buy humanity back for God through his sacrifice. This fulfillment of the Christmas story was predicted in Genesis 3:15, where God promises hostility between the serpent and the woman's seed. The incarnation and the cross are all part of God's ultimate plan for our salvation. We can't forget the unexpected encounter that occurred at the temple during Jesus' presentation. It connects to an awe-inspiring passage in Isaiah 6:1-4, where Isaiah sees the glory of the Lord. The greatness of Jesus, God himself, is beautifully portrayed in this depiction. We encounter the wise Simeon, who blesses Mary and foretells that Jesus will cause the rise and fall of many in Israel. He also mentions that a sword will pierce Mary's soul. Such powerful words that foreshadow the incredible journey ahead. As we celebrate this Christmas, let's not forget the true meaning behind it all. Mary's encounter with an angel and God's plan for her serves as a powerful reminder for all of us to discover our Christmas calling. Thank you for joining me on this incredible journey through the untold story of Christmas. May this episode inspire you and deepen your understanding of the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ. Welcome to Gospel Spice, the podcast that takes you on a flavorful journey through the text of Scripture. Stephanie invites you to dive into the Gospel of Matthew to uncover the hidden spices of the life of Jesus. We'll be exploring the cultural nuances and unspoken clues that Jesus' original audience would have easily picked up on, but that may have been lost in translation over time. As we follow Matthew, the most Jewish of the gospel authors, we'll also be connecting the dots between the Old and New Testaments, discovering how the entire Old Testament points to Jesus. Jesus is referenced, prophesied, and predicted throughout the ancient Scriptures. Join us as we discover the Christo-centricity of the Old Testament: it really is all centered around Jesus! Stephanie takes us on a journey to understand who Jesus claims to be, not through our own opinions, but through the lens of the cultural clues and perspectives of his original audience. As the most Jewish of the gospel authors, Matthew provides us with a rich tapestry of hidden spiritual spices that reveal the true essence of Jesus. Our focus is on establishing who Jesus is and what his opinion of himself is. We'll be exploring the divine authority of Jesus as the Messiah, the anointed one sent by God to save us from sin and redeem our lives. Join us as we uncover the fascinating messianic miracles and the unique attributes that differentiate them from regular miracles. The authority of Jesus is a powerful theme. Stephanie delves into an unusual and obscure passage known as a messianic miracle. This episode will challenge our understanding of miracles and how they point to Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah. In subsequent episodes, Stephanie will dive deeper into the book of Matthew and explore the person behind the Gospel. But for now, the focus is on establishing the divine authority of Jesus as the Messiah, the anointed one sent by God to save us from our shortcomings and lead us to a life of sanctification. So get ready to experience the gospel with new flavors, uncover hidden truths, and discover the authority of Jesus like never before. And please don't forget to subscribe and leave a review, as it helps us reach more listeners who are seeking to deepen their understanding of the gospel. Trusting God's heart over our own | Discovering true freedom in the Gospel

Stephanie reflects on the concept of freedom and the idea of choosing our master. As she shares her personal journey of relinquishing control, Stephanie challenges the notion that we are the best masters of our own lives. Instead, she encourages us to look beyond ourselves and find a master who is infinitely better than us. Join us as we explore the true meaning of freedom and discover the power of putting our trust in a trustworthy God. In our culture, the world tells us to follow our own hearts, to be the masters of our own destiny. But as Stephanie points out, our hearts are not always trustworthy guides. She admits her own shortcomings and realizes that she is not the best master for her own life. Can any of us truly claim to be? Stephanie challenges us to consider who or what we are following in our own lives. Stephanie then invites us to shift our perspective and look outside of ourselves for guidance, for a master who is infinitely better than us and who has our best interests at heart. She highlights that true freedom lies in choosing the right kind of help. In this case, it is choosing God as our master, the master who loves us infinitely, who knows all and has ultimate power and control. Faith, Stephanie reminds us, is not a step in the dark. It is about stepping out boldly because we know whose hand we are holding. It is trusting in a God who has proven trustworthy time and time again. Putting our faith in our own hearts would be misplaced faith, but putting our trust in God brings us freedom and a clearer view of reality. So, dear friends, let us consider who or what is truly guiding our lives. Are we choosing to follow our own flawed and finite hearts, or are we surrendering to the loving and wise guidance of our Heavenly Father? Let us choose the master who knows our purpose, who guides us towards true freedom, and who transforms us into the best version of ourselves. True freedom is not found in independence but in choosing whom we will follow. We all have a master, something or someone who controls our lives. So, who will you choose as your guide to true freedom? Get ready for an episode that will captivate your heart and inspire you to embrace the gospel in a whole new way. Welcome to Gospel Spice. Welcome to another episode of Gospel Spice, the podcast where we delve into the original flavors and spices of the Gospel. Stephanie invites us to explore the impact of culture on our faith. Stephanie Rousselle takes us on a journey to understand how culture shapes our perspective of God and how we can learn from Christians in different times and places. Stephanie's unique background, living in three continents, four countries, and experiencing diverse cultures, gives her a fresh and insightful approach to Scripture. She shares her recent cultural experiences across Europe, attending various worship services ranging from prominent evangelical settings to Catholic Masses to French-speaking worship services. She highlights how culture alters our approach to God, and she invites us to reflect on how culture has impacted our own faith journey. Stephanie reminds us that culture greatly influences our approach to God and invites us to embrace the diverse flavors of worship. She also acknowledges the common struggles and challenges we all face in our faith journeys, offering practical wisdom and encouragement to keep our faith alive and vibrant. She dives into everyday situations that we can all relate to, such as grappling with life's challenges, seeking God's guidance in singleness, struggling with infertility, navigating the roles we play in marriage, parenting, and more. We all experience moments when our faith feels stagnant, and Stephanie recognizes this. She calls us to reintroduce the excitement of the spices as we taste and see that the Lord is good. Whether our quiet times have lost their fervor, our prayers have become dry, or our circumstances have drawn us away from that initial love for God, Gospel Spice is here to rejuvenate our walk with Him. Through Gospel Spice, we will explore how to embrace the cumin, cinnamon, cilantro, cardamom, and fennel of Scripture instead of settling for an all-purpose salt faith. Stephanie provides practical and inspiring insights into remembering who God is and what He has done, allowing us to rediscover the depth of His love and the joy of living in His presence. We invite you to join us on this exciting journey of rediscovering the original spices of the Gospel and allowing them to flavor our daily walk with God. Bonjour! So good to be with you again. Stephanie here. Welcome back to Gospel Spice, the podcast where we dive deep into the teachings of Jesus and uncover the rich flavors of the gospel. In today's episode, we explore the profound wisdom found in two sections of the Sermon on the Mount. So, I am taking you on a journey through the Lord's Prayer to taste the flavors of its true meaning and purpose. Prayer is not just a rote repetition of words, but a heartfelt conversation with God, rooted in intimacy and focused on worship. Praying “in the Name of Jesus” reminds us of our dependence on his righteousness. But that's not all. Our exploration continues as we delve into Jesus' insightful teachings on money. Jesus challenges our modern-day culture's obsession with wealth and highlights the wisdom found in prioritizing heavenly treasures over earthly possessions. Through Jesus' words, we are reminded of the dangers of greed and the power of generosity in nurturing a light-filled heart. So grab your headphones and prepare to be inspired by the Holy Spirit teaching us through Jesus' words! Get ready to spice up your faith with Gospel Spice. Let's dive in! MORE ABOUT THIS EPISODE In the previous episode, we explored the Beatitudes and learned about the call to be both salt and light in the world. Building on this foundation, we now bring our attention to the Lord's Prayer, arguably the most famous prayer of all time. Let's look at the context in which Jesus taught this prayer: He had just admonished the Pharisees about the improper way of praying for public recognition. Jesus instructs His disciples and the crowd to pray in secret, seeking intimacy with God rather than the praise of others. The prayer itself is a revolutionary blueprint for approaching God with our own words. We will highlight the importance of seeking the meaning and spirit of Jesus' words, allowing them to guide our personal prayers. Prayer is not about mindless repetition or seeking public attention but about cultivating a genuine connection with God. Then, let's go through the different components of the Lord's Prayer. Starting with worship and praise, we acknowledge God's perfect attributes, glory, and holiness. Only after worshiping God, do we intercede for the world and present our personal needs. Interestingly, the confession of sins comes after acknowledging God's perfection, reminding us to take ourselves off center stage and prioritize the needs of others before our own. The podcast episode also delves into the concept of spiritual warfare, emphasizing that our battle is against Satan and that Christ is our ultimate protector. Prayer is our powerful weapon in this spiritual battle, but it is essential to keep the focus on Christ rather than ourselves. After exploring the Lord's Prayer, we will continue with Jesus' teachings on practical aspects of a surrendered life. We will particularly highlight Jesus' warnings about the love of money and the need for generosity. In our comfort-driven culture, this reminder is crucial, as Jesus teaches that money is a tool, not the end goal. We are encouraged to have a light-filled heart through generosity rather than being consumed by greed and darkness. I really hope that you will find that this episode is packed with valuable insights and practical applications for our spiritual journey. Thank you for being a part of the Gospel Spice podcast community. We look forward to continuing this journey with you! Have you ever wondered what it would be like to sit alongside Jesus and his initial audience? To experience the fresh spiritual flavors that the Messianic Jewish culture weaves into the four gospels? Well, that's exactly what we here aim to do. Stephanie invites you to dig deep into Scripture, unearthing raw diamonds that may need a little cleaning up, but will ultimately shine brightly. We invite you to encounter Jesus in a culturally relevant way. In this first episode of our brand new Series, JESUS RABBI AND LORD, Stephanie Rousselle takes you on a journey to understand the gospel from the inside out. We will explore the big picture context of the Bible and uncover the purpose of our existence on Earth. Get ready to dive deep into the text as we seek to unearth raw diamonds and discover the hidden gems within the Scriptures. In this episode, Stephanie emphasizes the importance of understanding the cultural context in which the Bible was written. Our generation, with its global cross-cultural interactions, has become acutely aware of the otherness of Jesus' culture. And that awareness fuels our desire to comprehend the culture of scripture in a new and profound way. Stephanie encourages us to consider the global cross-cultural interactions we engage in every day, whether at work, home, or online. She highlights the importance of understanding the culture of Scripture, especially in our generation that effortlessly navigates a diverse and interconnected world. As we explore Jesus' initial audience and their Jewish culture, we will experience the fresh spiritual flavors woven into the gospels. Drawing inspiration from Tim Keller, Stephanie emphasizes how cultural awareness is essential for authentic Christian living. She reminds us that the authors of the four canonical gospels never anticipated the gentile church that would emerge over the last 2000 years. Just as they navigated a different world, we must appreciate the nuances of their culture to fully grasp the essence of their teachings. Just as they wrote without knowledge of the centuries of gentile church that would follow, we must recognize the cultural nuances they embraced and unfold them within our modern context. Join us on this guided tour through Scripture as we make the 1st-century Jewish culture accessible to our modern, gentile Western minds. Stephanie's deep knowledge and passion for Jewish culture, combined with her personal stories, will engage and enlighten you. So join us on this adventure, as we unearth the spices that flavor the gospel and invite Jesus to weave His spirit into our own stories. Gospel Spice is the podcast that will challenge, inspire, and transform your understanding of the Scriptures. Stephanie's own journey, from being an atheist in France to encountering Jesus and living a life of faith, adds a relatable and personal touch to the episode. Her experiences as a French atheist turned follower of Jesus, combined with her international travels, have sharpened her ability to decipher local cultures and understand the essence of each unique context. So get ready to embark on this enlightening and transformative journey with Gospel Spice.

I denne talen tok Fredrik utgangspunkt i Mark 9,2-8. Sermon Audio – Cross of Grace

John 3:1-17Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God, for no one can do the signs that you do apart from the presence of God.” Jesus said to him, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born from above.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can one be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother's womb and be born?”Jesus said to him, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of heaven without being born of water and spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh and what is born of the spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I have said to you, ‘You must be born of the spirit.' The wind blows where it chooses and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the spirit.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?”Jesus said, “Are you a teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? Very truly I tell you, we speak about what we know and we testify to what we have seen and you do not receive our testimony. If I tell you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whoever believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” Let me start by saying that I've always really liked Nicodemus. Every sermon I've ever preached about him has expressed as much. He's always been a figure of faith and courage for me … someone who took some risks to show up to Jesus – which was hard for someone like him, being a Pharisee and all – one of those Jewish believers and religious leaders who were so often at odds with what Jesus was trying to do and say and teach and bring into the world. So, I've always been inclined to love his honest curiosity. His hard questions. His rebellious willingness to approach Jesus under cover of darkness – probably risking his reputation, maybe even risking his life by consorting with the enemy, which is likely how he'd been convinced to understand Jesus. After all, what would all of his buddies, his fellow Pharisees say, if they knew where he was that night, hanging out with that heretic from Nazareth? And I always saw it as an admirable sign of surprising deference and humility – a reverent kind of respect – that Nicodemus called Jesus “Rabbi,” and “Teacher,” before approaching him with his questions the evening they met … in secret … “by night” as the story goes.So bear with me … because this time I wondered, for a change, if Nicodemus' motives weren't purely innocent when he showed up at Jesus' door or window or whatever, under cover of that darkness? What if he was B.S.-ing Jesus? What if he was faking all of that deference, humility and curiosity? What if, as happened more than a few times throughout the course of Jesus' ministry, Nicodemus was just another religious leader trying to trap Jesus with some trick questions?(Before I go on, it's important to say, in these times when anti-Semitism is rearing its sinful head in ever-prolific ways, that when I make note of the flaws of the Pharisees in Scripture, I do that, not because they're Jewish – as too many misguided souls believe – but because they look and smell and act too much like religious people of all kinds in the world as we know it. They are meant to be more like reflections in our mirror, than like targets of our derision and judgment.)Because there was that one time we're told some other Pharisees plotted to entrap Jesus … so they sent their disciples to him…saying, “Teacher,” …Tell us what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?”And another time, not long after that, we know some Pharisees heard about how Jesus had silenced the Sadducees and one of them, another Pharisee who was also a lawyer, asked Jesus a question deliberately to test him. “Teacher,” that Pharisee wanted to know, “which commandment in the law is the greatest?”There was that other time, too, when a different lawyer stood up, again, specifically to test Jesus, we're told, and asks him “Teacher … what must I do to inherit eternal life?” That little inquisition leads to one of the greatest stories ever told – by Jesus or anyone, for that matter – the story of the Good Samaritan. And finally, later on in John's Gospel, which we just heard, the scribes and Pharisees bring a woman before Jesus who had been caught in adultery and, we're told … again … in order merely to test Jesus so that they might have some charge to bring against him, they say, “Teacher … in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women…what do you say?”Teacher… Teacher… Teacher… Teacher… Test… Test… Test… Test…In each and every one of these stories – appearing in some way, shape or form, in each and every one of the Gospels – the inquisitor – a Pharisee of some sort – calls Jesus “Teacher” before testing him or trying to trap and trick him into some sort of trouble. So, as much as I've always been inclined to want to like good ol' Nicodemus … this time around, for the first time ever, I started to wonder if he just might be up to some similarly sinister shenanigans. And this only matters, because of the state of our world these days and because of how things pan out for Jesus, for Nicodemus, and for the Good News we stand to gain from it all.See, if we're allowed to imagine that Nicodemus had ulterior motives that were less than pure … if not downright dangerous and deadly for Jesus … then what if his friends were waiting outside? What if there were others waiting for a word or a whistle or a warning from inside the house so they could finally catch Jesus in the act of blasphemy or heresy or whatever it was they thought they could use to justify his arrest or worse?Because it feels like that's how we live in the world these days … like everything is a trick or a trap; like there's a single right or wrong answer to everything depending on your political party or religious affiliation or race or station in society or according to any other of the various and sundry labels and measuring sticks we use to identify ourselves and judge each other at any given moment on any particular topic. And the consequences of that are closed minds and what we've come to call “cancel culture.” The effects of this way of life are resistance to honest reflection and a disdain for curious inquiry. The results of this phenomenon are banned books and culled curriculum and conspiracy theories; racism and religious fanaticism and dying churches; echo chambers and siloes of exclusive, similarly-minded souls; and fear and suspicion and hatred, even, of “the other” and of the outsider and of anyone who doesn't think or believe or behave like we do.And none of it is Christ-like – which is what Jesus shows Nicodemus and the rest of us, that night we read about in this morning's Gospel. Because if we imagine that what I proposed about Nicodemus and his motives is true … it is Jesus who was brave and vulnerable, humble, full of faith, and gracious – as always. If Nicodemus was just like every other religious leader who had approached him before, Jesus had to be suspicious – if not downright afraid – of this stranger at the door … in the night … and whatever he had up his sleeve, that might be hiding behind and beneath his questions. But Jesus welcomes him and his questions and his curiosity, anyway. He responds to Nicodemus without a lot of hard and fast, black and white certainty – “the wind blows where it chooses,” he says … you hear it … but who knows where it comes from or where it's going? (What in the world does that even mean?)Jesus offers Nicodemus honesty and patience and his own kind of curiosity – “If I speak to you about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I speak to you about heavenly things…?”Jesus speaks from his own experience, nothing more and nothing less – “we speak about what we know” … “we testify to what we have seen…”And he gives Nicodemus something to think about, extending to him simple grace and good news – the Gospel in miniature, as Martin Luther calls it: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son … God did not send the Son to condemn the world, but in order that the world would be saved through him.”And something about all of that honesty, patience, lived experience, grace and good news reaches Nicodemus. And, if what I imagined about his motives this time around is true, it changed something for Nicodemus – and changed him big time. If he didn't mean it when he called Jesus “Rabbi” and “teacher” at the start of it all, he seems to have learned a thing or two from Jesus, in the end.Because we know Nicodemus hung with Jesus after that night. He defended Jesus in front of his accusers later on in John's Gospel, and it was Nicodemus who showed up, after his crucifixion and death to tend to Jesus' body, along with Joseph of Arimathea. All of this, for me, means that if the Church and its followers want to live like Jesus and encourage others – our kids, our neighbors, our supposed enemies, and anyone/everyone who could be blessed by the grace we proclaim – if we want them to join us for this journey of faith we share, we're called to be brave in times like these. We're being called to be patient, curious, and open to hard questions and different points of view. We're being called to testify to what we've seen and experienced about God's grace in our lives. And we're being called to remind each other and whoever will listen – especially those who aren't sure about any of this – that God's grace and goodness belong to them, and to the whole wide world, just the same;that God showed up in Jesus – humble, brave and vulnerable, too;willing to be condemned, not to condemn;but to save – all of it – at all costs;even when that meant his very life, in the end.Amen

Saturday of the Sixth Week in Ordinary Time Mark 9:2-13 Jesus was transfigured in their presence Jesus took with him Peter and James and John and led them up a high mountain where they could be alone by themselves. There in their presence he was transfigured: his clothes became dazzlingly white, whiter than any earthly bleacher could make them. Elijah appeared to them with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus. Then Peter spoke to Jesus: ‘Rabbi,' he said ‘it is wonderful for us to be here; so let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.' He did not know what to say; they were so frightened. And a cloud came, covering them in shadow; and there came a voice from the cloud, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him.' Then suddenly, when they looked round, they saw no one with them any more but only Jesus. As they came down from the mountain he warned them to tell no one what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. They observed the warning faithfully, though among themselves they discussed what ‘rising from the dead' could mean. And they put this question to him, ‘Why do the scribes say that Elijah has to come first?' ‘True,' he said ‘Elijah is to come first and to see that everything is as it should be; yet how is it that the scriptures say about the Son of Man that he is to suffer grievously and be treated with contempt? However, I tell you that Elijah has come and they have treated him as they pleased, just as the scriptures say about him.'

Tradition holds that St. Elias was assumed into Heaven and will come again as the forerunner of Christ to do battle with the Antichrist. This is all about that! “And as they went on, walking and talking together, behold, a fiery chariot and fiery horses parted them both asunder: and Elias went up by a whirlwind into heaven.” (2 Kings 2:11)Elias was indeed covered with the whirlwind, and his spirit was filled up in Eliseus: in his days he feared not the prince, and no man was more powerful than he. (Ecclesiasticus 48:13)Behold, I will send you Elias the prophet, before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.  And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers: lest I come, and strike the earth with anathema.  (Mal 4:5–6) And there appeared to them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus.  And Peter answering, said to Jesus: Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. And let us make three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. (Mk 9:3–4)And I will give unto my two witnesses: and they shall prophesy, a thousand two hundred sixty days, clothed in sackcloth. These are the two olive trees and the two candlesticks that stand before the Lord of the earth.  And if any man will hurt them, fire shall come out of their mouths and shall devour their enemies. And if any man will hurt them, in this manner must he be slain. These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: And they have power over waters, to turn them into blood and to strike the earth with all plagues, as often as they will. Saturday of the Sixth Week in Ordinary Time Mark 9:2-13 Jesus took with him Peter and James and John and led them up a high mountain where they could be alone by themselves.

Welcome to Day 21 of Lent and Day 21 of our reflections on the gospel of John! Thanks so much for listening. To subscribe by email, go here. A Reflection on John 9:1-41 “Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind.” (v 32) A man born blind. Darkness is all he knows. He sits near the temple, begging, unable to work because of circumstances beyond his control. The darkness before his eyes matches the darkness in his soul, as he hears the whispers day in and day out, in one form or another, similar to the disciples' question to Jesus: “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” (v 2). Shame weighs heavy on the man's soul as he believes what he has heard all his life, that this blindness has a cause, that he or his parents are at fault. And what could he do? There is nothing to do but beg and hope that some would have pity on him. There is no hope of healing because for a man born into blindness, there is no cure. But then he hears the words of Jesus: “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents…” Could this be true? The smallest of cracks begins to break through the black wall of shame around his heart. Small, but big enough to let a bright beam of Light shine in. He hears the teacher's words: “I am the light of the world,” and feels the wet, cold clay on his eyelids. “Go, wash,” the teacher tells him. So he does. And the dark wall of shame in his soul comes crumbling down as he blinks his eyes and takes in the light for the first time. He can see. Not only that, but the joy bubbling up in his heart is like nothing he has known before. The darkness is gone. The Pharisees question the man, but he refuses to let their disbelief and resentment bring him back down into the darkness, “If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” They cast him out, but they cannot cast out his new-found hope. Jesus, you are the light of the world. Only you can break through the walls that shame has built in my heart. Lord, I believe. Let your light shine in my soul, that it may shine out to all the world.

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lekendelett-podcast/message

Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council (John 3:1). Many hints lie in the fact that Nicodemus was “a man of the Pharisees,” and “a member of the Jewish ruling council.” Again, John expects that his readers are already familiar with other gospels, and in this case, have basic background knowledge of who the Pharisees were. Fortunately, the synoptic gospels contain a good deal of discussion pertaining to the Pharisees. For instance, we find the following verses: Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, "Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you (Mat 12:38)." The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven (16:1). Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, "The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation (Luke 17:20), At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, "Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you (13:31)." Pay attention to the words like “sign” and “the kingdom of God” in these verses, and look at what Nicodemus said to Jesus: Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him (John 3:2). Why did the Pharisees always talk about “signs”? And why did Jesus suddenly begin talking about “the kingdom of God”? These are good questions to ask, and it is better if you seek the answers by looking at the passages for yourself rather than depending on what the others say. You will learn a lot by doing that. Do not let someone else do your thinking. The “signs” that the Pharisees and other people sought from Jesus are for the proof of the Messiah that they believed was coming. And this Messiah (also called the Prophet) was going to establish “the kingdom of God” for them. But the problem with this was that their Messiah was merely the king of their nation who would deliver them from Roman oppressions. So, Jesus always tried to withdraw from them. They asked him when “the kingdom of God” would come, and Nicodemus, believing that Jesus was the teacher coming from God, which was proved by the “signs” he did, wanted to ask him the same question. Jesus’ answer was: I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again (v. 3). Just as you were born into this world as a citizen of your country, you will need to born into “the kingdom of God.” It was another world that Jesus was talking about.
