Wisconsin Watch reporter Jacob Resneck found that local governments and the state of Wisconsin have poured more than $70 million in taxpayer subsidies into Oshkosh Corp. and its defense subsidiary in recent years. Despite that, the company has sent more than 1,000 jobs south, where workers earn a fraction of what union laborers in Oshkosh's Wisconsin plants earn. Reporting by Jacob Resneck. The trucks will be among 50,000 Next Generation Delivery Vehicles from Wisconsin-based Oshkosh Corp. - Maloney referred to a Government Accountability Office report released Tuesday. The congressional watchdog said the postal service used a gas price that is almost $2 per gallon less than the current national average price of gas. - The Postal Service is moving forward over objections of the Biden administration with its $6 billion plan to purchase as many as 165,000 mail trucks over the next 10 years, with up to 90% of those running on gasoline instead of more climate-friendly batteries. One of them could be the next-generation C3 - In addition, the already revealed plug-in hybrid version of the Citroën C5X is also listed. - Previous reports mentioned a Dodge PHEV launching in 2022 with underpinnings shared with the Alfa Romeo Tonale. The model is expected to be a rebadged Tonale called the Hornet - Fiat has only one, a to-be-announced all-electric model; many are hoping it will be the next-generation Panda EV - As for the Jeep brand, the roadmap includes the already unveiled Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid launching this year and a mystery battery electric model expected to arrive in 2023. - Alfa Romeo CEO recently said the Brennero EV will launch in 2024, which means its Jeep equivalent will launch the year before judging by this product roadmap. - Maserati will launch two BEVs in 2022–2023: the GranTurismo/GranCabrio replacements and Grecale SUV. - On the Opel/Vauxhall front, the all-new Astra hatchback and wagon will get plug-in hybrid and battery electric variants, with the same thing in store for the latest Peugeot 308. - Ram will launch an all-electric ProMaster in 2023 to rival the Ford E-Transit and GM's BrightDrop vans. Original Source : http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php DUKE MAY OFFER SOME EV CUSTOMERS 'ALL YOU CAN CHARGE' FOR JUST $19.99/MONTH - Duke Energy has proposed an electric vehicle (EV) charging program that could allow some residential customers in North Carolina to charge a vehicle for a fixed monthly fee as low as $19.99. In exchange, the customer would allow Duke to manage the vehicle's charging, in order to avoid grid stress and higher costs. - Customers who consume more than 800 kWh for charging in a month, or opt out of several managed charging events during which charging may be paused, could receive warnings and be removed from the pilot. According to Duke, that amount of energy will get a typical EV close to 2,000 miles of range. But clean energy advocates say the program limits are an indication that subscription-based managed charging plans may not work for all customers. - Unmanaged EV charging that occurs during or near the coincident peak could mean Duke "will need to build or obtain additional capacity resources to avoid power interruptions or damage to the system," the utility said. "This could result in increased costs for all customers." On the other hand, if EV charging is managed effectively Duke said it will be able to "delay or avoid adding additional capacity resources" and reduce costs in both the short- and long-term. System assets will also be used more efficiently, "and these savings will be shared among both EV drivers and non-EV drivers." As a more affordable model below the LiveWire One, the Del Mar is to be based on a new platform called Arrow, which has a special technical feature. - Until now, the battery has been built into the frame, which is the only load-bearing component, but this classic frame is omitted in the Arrow platform. Instead of being attached to the frame, the swingarm is attached to the side engine mounts, and the suspension strut is supported on the battery block again by means of a deflection. - The new arrangement saves weight and can reduce costs but also requires a completely new design of the battery housing, as this not only protects the cells in the event of an accident but now also has to absorb other forces during the ride – such as from the suspension strut. - The battery of the Arrow platform will use round cells in the 2170 format. Depending on the model, Harley will connect these standard cells differently in order to realise voltage levels between 50 and 400 volts. Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2022/02/23/livewire-to-launch-arrow-platform-for-lighter-e-motorbikes/ USPS SEALS GASOLINE-TRUCKS DEAL, SHUNNING BIDEN EV PLEA - The U.S. Postal Service has authorized the replacement of its mail-truck fleet with nearly all gasoline-powered vehicles built by Oshkosh Corp. after the Biden administration unsuccessfully pushed the independent agency to increase the number of electric trucks purchased. - The move, announced in a record of decision made public Wednesday, affirms a decision by the agency to move forward with a contested plan to begin purchasing as many as 165,000 mail trucks over the next 10 years. As much as 90% of those will be fueled by gasoline instead of climate-friendly battery power, according to the plan. - The agency said its plan "is the most achievable given the Postal Service's financial condition," because, it said, the battery-electric option has a significantly higher total cost of ownership than its combustion-engine counterpart. However, environmentalists and energy analysts have disputed the assertion. - Environmental groups are preparing to immediately challenge the move in federal court, arguing the Postal Service is illegally justifying its move with a fundamentally flawed analysis of the purchase plan that underestimates greenhouse gas emissions, relies on faulty economic assumptions and fails to consider alternatives. - Although the Biden administration has limited authority over the Postal Service because it is an independent agency, federal courts have found the USPS is still bound by the National Environmental Policy Act that requires analysis of major policy decisions. And federal courts have previously invalidated government leases sold to private companies after finding that analysis lacking. Welcome to a new PRODUCER GLEN MASON GENERAL MOTORS WILL BUILD A THIRD EV BATTERY FACTORY IN THE US General Motors announced a $7 billion investment in growing its electric vehicle manufacturing capabilities in Michigan, calling it “the single largest investment announcement in GM history.” The company will spend the money on four manufacturing sites, with plans to create 4,000 new jobs and retain another 1,000 in the state. The investment includes construction of a new battery cell plant in Lansing and the conversion of GM's assembly plant in Orion for production of the Chevy Silverado EV and the electric GMC Sierra. GM has said it will spend $35 billion by 2025 on electric and autonomous vehicles It's also a sign of GM's continued confidence in the growth of the EV market, despite representing only 3 percent of sales in the US over the last year. https://www.theverge.com/2022/1/25/22900729/gm-ev-battery-factory-invest-michigan-us G.M. has battery plants under construction in Ohio and Tennessee, and has retooled a plant in Detroit, where it recently started making an electric Hummer truck. It also plans to make electric vehicles at a plant in Ontario and at another in Mexico. G.M.'s new Michigan battery plant, like G.M.'s other battery plants, will be a joint venture between the automaker and LG Electric. It will be built on the site of an existing plant in Lansing, at a cost of $2.6 billion to be shared between G.M. and LG. G.M. will also invest $4 billion to enable a plant in Orion Township The company expects to add 2,350 jobs at the Orion factory and to retain 1,000 other jobs at the plant when pickup production starts. G.M. expects the Orion plant and the Detroit plant, known as Factory Zero, to eventually be able to make 600,000 electric full-size trucks a year. The company said that by the end of 2025, it planned to have a total annual manufacturing capacity of one million electric vehicles. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/25/business/general-motors-electric-vehicle-plant.html WHITE HOUSE TO HOST GM, FORD AMONG CEOS AT MEETING ON SPENDING PUSH The White House plans to host the chief executives of major U.S. companies including auto and tech sector firms on Wednesday to discuss President Joe Biden's signature $1.75 trillion Build Back Better legislation. General Motors CEO Mary Barra, Ford Motor (F.N) CEO Jim Farley Biden on Tuesday touted GM's announcement of a new $7 billion investment in Michigan, adding 4,000 jobs and boosting electric vehicle and battery manufacturing. Biden's proposal would increase the current $7,500 EV tax credit to up to $12,500 for union-made U.S. vehicles as well as creating a credit of up to $4,000 for used vehicles. The bill would also again make GM and Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) eligible for tax credits after they hit the 200,000-vehicle cap on the existing $7,500 credit. https://www.reuters.com/business/white-house-host-ceos-spending-bill-push-2022-01-25/ PLANS FOR SECOND LG PLANT IN HOLLAND COMING TOGETHER, BUT NOT 'DONE DEAL' Despite dirt already moving on the site of a proposed expansion of LG Energy Solution's electric vehicle battery plant in Holland, Holland is still competing for the final blessing to be the site of $1.7 billion in investment from LG. The state of Michigan is expected to offer substantial incentives to LG Energy Solution for the project, but no official word on what those incentives will amount to is expected until a state board votes on the incentive package in late February. LG Chem's battery-making subsidiary LG Energy Solution is proposing building a second plant with the primary building, at 1 million square feet, even larger than the existing Holland plant. The total footprint of the proposed project is 1.4 million square feet. According to city documents, LG plans to hire 1,200 employees by 2025 to staff the second plant at an average wage of $50,000. Ever since LG Chem chose to build its first battery plant in Holland in 2010, city officials have known there was a chance for a second major investment in the city on land LG owns directly to the north of the current plant https://eu.hollandsentinel.com/story/business/manufacturing/2022/01/25/plans-second-lg-plant-holland-coming-together-but-not-done-deal/9208985002/ TESLA (TSLA) Q4 2021 EARNINGS PREVIEW Tesla (TSLA) is set to announce its fourth-quarter and full-year 2021 financial results tomorrow, January 26, after the markets close. As usual, a conference call and Q&A with Tesla's management is scheduled after the results. Earlier this month, Tesla confirmed that it delivered 308,600 electric vehicles during the last quarter. The Wall Street consensus for this quarter is $17.112 billion, and Estimize, the financial estimate crowdsourcing website, predicts a higher revenue of $17.416 billion. The earnings are more of a hit-or-miss since it depends on how much Tesla is spending that quarter, and with supply chain issues and cost increasing at new factories being brought online, it could be not as profitable despite record revenues. https://electrek.co/2022/01/25/tesla-tsla-q4-2021-earnings-preview-what-to-expect/ TESLA Q4 2021 EARNINGS Q&A – SAY.COM What's the current volume of 4680 cells? The move was widely perceived as a snub toward Revel, the company best known for its electric moped-sharing service, which was planning to launch a ride-hailing service using a fleet of Tesla vehicles. -Revel announced last April that it planned to launch a ride-hail service in Manhattan with a fleet of 50 Tesla Model Ys. The company had been hoping to exploit a loophole in the city's current rules, which caps the number of new FHV licenses but exempts wheelchair-accessible and electric vehicles. The cap was originally enacted as a way to stem the tide of new Uber and Lyft vehicles that were flooding the streets. On Tuesday, the TLC voted 5-to-1 remove the exemption for electric vehicles, effectively closing off that pathway for Revel. - those who already own an FHV license for a gas car are still allowed to transfer those licenses to an electric vehicle if they so choose. · Original Source : https://www.theverge.com/2021/6/23/22546955/nyc-tlc-electric-vehicle-license-taxi-vote-revel-tesla REALITY CHECK FOR VW IN CHINA - Volkswagen AG's ID series – the backbone of its electric vehicle ambitions – is off to what even company sources call a worryingly slow start in China. Sales in May of two ID.4 electric SUV models, launched only two months earlier, came to a mere 1,213 combined. And that was about 200 fewer than in April, according to auto consultancy LMC. The sales fall far short of initial hopes, four people with knowledge of the matter said, and what some other automakers have achieved with early sales of flagship EV offerings in the world's largest auto market. - Volkswagen's venture with state-owned SAIC Motor, which makes the slightly bigger ID.4 X model, had been targeting sales of 50,000-60,000 vehicles this year - A separate venture between the world's No. 2 automaker and FAW which makes the ID.4 CROZZ had similar targets - By comparison, Tesla sold 6,612 of its Model Y in China in the first two months after its launch. Although it is expected that the reservations would still be higher than usual, the growing EV production in the company could be enough to rival Tesla. - "We achieved a landmark last Friday when we started building our quality validation production run of cars. We completed our pre-production run very successfully. The quality validation builds are the cars that we eventually will sell directly to customers once we get the quality right. This is a big step in our mission to industrialize," Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson said. In line with this goal, Rawlinson hopes that the Air's "Dream Edition" would be delivered in this year's second half. During Q2 2021, the revamped Dream only lasted for a while. Out of the 38 projects, 17 have secured funding so far, estimated to be up to $30 billion between them. The amount consists of both private and public funding, including, for instance, Tesla's gigafactory in Berlin, which received $1.4 billion in German federal and state support. - Ten other projects have secured partial financing and support, making up at least $16.8 billion in potential investments. These include numerous national projects, key to Europe's battery autonomy, notably Verkor in France, Britishvolt in the UK, Italvolt in Italy, Basquevolt-Nabatt in Spain, and Freyr in Norway. In addition, 11 more gigafactories have recently been announced, but still lack firm commitments regarding location, planned capacity, and investment. - If all 38 gigafactories come through, 462 GWh worth of battery cells could be produced in 2025 and 1,144 GWh in 2030 – that's 13 times higher the current European supply of 87 GWh in 2021. The study found that by automating charging to minimize carbon impact, carbon emissions from EV charging could be reduced 8-14% on average across the U.S. - Carbon reductions from automated EV charging could have a significant impact on reaching carbon emissions goals to slow climate change, and while EV charging is the most obvious case, similar opportunities for savings apply to other large loads in the home. The best opportunities for load shaping are activities that can be scheduled flexibly, like running a dishwasher or washing machine during overnight hours to have clean clothes and dishes ready when they're needed in the morning - Using an automated, dynamic approach, utilities can incentivize customers to reduce peak emissions by shifting their activities, including EV charging, similar to the current incentives to reduce peak demand. · Original Source : https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/new-study-finds-that-ev-charge-automation-could-reduce-carbon-impact-by-up-to-14-in-us-and-by-43-in-california-301316475.html WE'RE CHARGING OUR EVS AT PEAK TIMES · Original Source : https://thedriven.io/2021/06/23/were-charging-our-evs-at-peak-times-and-must-get-smarter-origin/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What's the best way to navigate an EV journey and charge on the way? A Northeast Wisconsin heavy-duty vehicle manufacturer stands to bear the brunt of tens of millions in proposed spending reductions if the White House gets its way.Defense contractors are always subject to the whims of global conflict and political considerations, but a new report suggests that orders for hundreds of Oshkosh Corp.-built Army trucks could be a casualty of the administration's efforts to build fencing along the border with Mexico. The Defense Department recently issued plans to divert more than $3.8 billion to construct 177 miles of fence along the nearly 2,000-mile border. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that most of that funding comes from cancelled aircraft and drone purchases, but more than $100 million would also be diverted from the Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck program. Those trucks are used to carry munitions and other supplies for the Army. Oshkosh has rebuilt more than 12,000 of them over the past 25 years, and received a $232 million contract to revamp more than 400 more early last year.Oshkosh officials didn’t answer questions about how the changes could impact its operations or payroll, but Wisconsin Sen. Tammy Baldwin’s office told the Journal Sentinel that the Trump administration appears to be taking funding from the state’s manufacturing sector for a wall that the president famously promised Mexico would pay for.Pentagon budget documents, meanwhile, defended the cut by noting that spending hundreds of millions on legacy trucks was inconsistent with its goals of modernizing its tactical vehicle fleet.Oshkosh is far from the only firm that would be affected under the plan. The company touts more than 700 suppliers, and Fairbanks Morse — another Wisconsin company — was set to make the engines for a Navy ship program that now faces $650 million in cuts under the proposal.
