In episode 145, Erik and Kerel talk with Armond Davis, Founder & Managing Partner at The Paragon Group, an investment group that focuses on minority and women-owned businesses. Growing up in St. Louis to a family of educators, Armond has always had a thirst for learning and knew he wanted to be a businessman at 7 years old after a “take your kid to work day” at his mother's tall office building. He earned an MBA in Finance and another MBA in commercial real estate investment and eventually blended his love for investments and operating businesses in 2006. After people telling him his education was inferior, almost going bankrupt, and making a lot of mistakes, he realized his journey from investments to business owner and back to investments was all meant to be. Armond shares the mindset he has and that he looks for in founders who he wants to invest in, his thesis that minorities and women will outperform anyone else at anytime, the importance an abundance mindset plays in investing and business, how he takes his losses or other people's criticisms and uses them as fuel, and the value and priority he puts on community and mentorship. “When you understand why you're doing something, then it's much more difficult to get knocked off your path. And once you've identified what your purpose is, what your reason for being here is, then you can commit to that. And when you move within that purpose, the universe rewards you.” Timestamps: :43: Armond Davis, Founder & Managing Partner at The Paragon Group, shares how The Paragon came to be and his first M&A deal, which was a big learning lesson 2:44: Armond talks about his family background of educators and how he knew he wanted to be a businessman at 7 years old 4:22: Armond shares his investment thesis, the importance of an abundance mindset, and how to use money as a tool 7:52: How to create and cultivate a mindset of abundance 10:05: Armond shares why he is so passionate about his purpose, his thoughts on the recent social movements and how minorities and women can get one step ahead to get sustained dollars 16:21: Why Armond puts so much importance on mentorship and community 19:50: Armond gives credit to his alma mater, Florida A&M University for instilling confidence in him and shares a story of a challenging conversation he had with an employer 24:23: The superpower of empathy 25:51: Where Armond draws his inspiration from, what TV shows he watches, and why it's a skill to draw inspiration from anywhere 29:28: What Armond is looking forward to next with The Paragon Group 30:47: The three apps Armond uses on his phone to stay connected, informed, and engaged 32:42: How to reach Armond Davis Follow Us: Newsletter: bitly.com/2QLEY8U Linkedin: bit.ly/2ZZUBxG Twitter: bit.ly/2Qp0SzK Instagram: bit.ly/2QLfEQc

On this episode of The Massimo Show, Rod sits down with 2021 Massimo CRE Accelerator of the Year - Mason Fiascone. Mason is currently a Local Inland Northwest Multifamily Expert in Eastern Washington State for The Paragon Group. Mason grew up in the Chicago suburbs north of Chicago and Gurnee, Illinois, and loved all kinds of things: leadership, business, entrepreneurship, “everything I could get my hands on” Mason tells Rod “typical kind of firstborn type A personality” He started a lawn mowing business mowing lawns in the neighborhood, he was the only male babysitter in a roughly five-mile radius and was involved in Catholic leadership through his high school. After graduating high school in 2012 he went to undergrad where he met his wife, studied marketing and philosophy, and then worked for four years in corporate America at Unilever. Mason did marketing work for big brands like Ben and Jerry's, Dove and Hellman's to name a few. “But I realized that my wings were a little bit clipped being in the corporate world. And so while working a full-time job and living in Charlotte, and New York and San Francisco, I was doing everything I could to learn about real estate” Mason explains to Rod “everything I could to understand how can I get out of the corporate world and into the generating income and providing a life for my family.” After a year and a half, Mason realized he'd only scraped the surface of real estate and that he needed to get into the business full time. He decided to be a multifamily specialist and saw a lot of opportunity in his market, which is Eastern Washington. He built the business plan, jumped in, and has found a lot of success since then. And that was 15 months ago from today, in January 2020. Mason and Rod spend the rest of their time together discussing how he read Brokers Who Dominate and then Knowing Isn't Doing on the recommendation from a friend and absorbed every single piece of information, how he stumbled through his first few deals (including an unwelcome guest in the basement of a four-plex), how his pipeline completely changed after starting coaching with The Massimo Group and what's happening over on Real Estate Twitter.

In this OPI Talk podcast, we feature part of an interview that OPI CEO Steve Hilleard and News Editor Andy Braithwaite conducted with Sean Shine, CEO of Ireland-based Paragon, and Steve Horne, CEO of OT Group, the entity created following Paragon's acquisition of those SPOT assets. If, like many in the office products industry, you had never heard of Paragon until last year, this podcast will give you a better understanding of the group. You will also learn why it decided to acquire OfficeTeam, ZenOffice, Spicers Ireland and certain other assets, and what the underlying problems were at SPOT that forced it into administration. Make sure you are subscribed to OPI to read more from this interview in the January/February 2021 issue of OPI magazine and online at opi.net. It will cover topics such as the strategic priorities for the OT Group, how it is responding to market conditions in the UK, adapting to work from home and dealing with Brexit, plus its new relationship with the EOSA purchasing organisation. Note: this interview was conducted in December 2020, before it was publicised that Steve Horne will be stepping down from his role as CEO of OT Group, effective the end of March 2021. Gordie is part of the touchstone education team, he has been involved in sales for his entire life, previously running a large sales company. He is now involved in building the touchstone brand Abi is managing director for the Paragon Group, she has a large amount of previous experience in senior management roles. They each run their own Serviced Accommodation business. After fearing that property was a difficult venture, Abi attended the SA Masterclass and decided to invest in the Peak District for SA, mainly for the tourism industry, and for her own family to travel to. She now has 2 units, with another 5 in the pipeline, and was the first one in her family to do it. The main thing previously ‘ holding her back ‘ was that she thought property required a lot of money, and experience. She thought it was simply something that was out of her reach. Little did she know she was more than capable of achieving success in property. Abi follows the Rent to Rent strategy, meaning she controls the property, but doesn’t actually need to own any of the properties. Gordie started the Touchstone Education Serviced Accommodation masterclass 18 months ago, with no previous experience and is now also involved with rent to rent. None of his family are involved in property, so again he was the first to make this jump. He didn’t have a lot of spare time, despite his well paid day job he decided 18 months ago that he wanted to get into SA. Although his day job was well paid, he was exchanging a heck of a lot of time for money. It took him 3 weeks to acquire 2 rent to rent units. He now stands at 28 units, with another 5 going live soon. They earn an average of £1000 a month… EACH. Listen now to learn: Why getting started in property requires no previous experience How to manage and make money from properties you don’t even own Why being the first person to do something is not a bad thing
