We can learn a lot from artists who put their connection to the natural world at the center of their practice -- like David Rothenberg. David is a clarinetist famous for his live performance collaborations not only with other brilliant musicians, but also with birds, insects and whales. Few people have gone as deep into considering the meaning of animal sounds, or their musicality, as David. He is now releasing his latest endeavor, Nightingales in Berlin -- which includes a music recording, a book and a film. As Ken and David discuss on the show, the Nightingale's song has its own personality, volition, and temperament. They prove to be provocative collaborators, as you'll hear towards the end of the program, when we play a piece from the new album. It's wonderful stuff. David Rothenberg has written and performed on the relationship between humanity and nature for many years. He is the author of Why Birds Sing, on making music with birds, which was turned into a documentary by the BBC. His next book, Thousand Mile Song, about making music with whales, became a film for French television. His book on insects and music, Bug Music, has been covered in the New Yorker, the Wall St Journal, the New York Times, on PBS News Hour and on Radiolab. As a composer and jazz clarinetist, Rothenberg has sixteen CDs out under his own name, including a record on ECM with Marilyn Crispell, called One Dark Night I Left My Silent House. And he is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Music at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. You can find more about David at http://www.davidrothenberg.net. As more people speak openly about their spiritual experiences, and the challenges that come with waking up, the discussion about how society can appropriately acknowledge and support this shift is attracting the attention of professionals. One such group is the American Center for the Integration of Spiritually Transformative Experiences, or ACISTE (pronounced like “assist”). ACISTE is an association of professional therapists dedicated to educating their field about spiritual emergence. As Ken discusses on today's episode with 3 people from ACISTE, often people will seek therapeutic help when they're having an opening, and the therapists they speak with will interpret their spiritual epiphanies as signs of mental illness. Rather than getting validation and support, they get medication and condemnation. Charles Eisenstein - Changing the Climate Change Story

Charles Eisenstein first got attention for a self-published, brilliant philosophical book called The Ascent of Humanity, which critiques the idea of the separate self — and offers a coherent vision of a society based on the awareness of our interconnection. His next book was Sacred Economics, which flips much of our received wisdom about economics on its head, right down to its title. In his new book, Climate: A New and Ancient Story, Charles takes a similarly radical approach to the environmental crisis. As Ken and Charles discuss in today's episode, neither the left nor right political perspective on climate is appropriate for addressing the real issues that we face. He makes important points that everyone who cares about the future of ecosystem needs to hear. Charles is widely acknowledged as one of our most original and influential thinkers in the emerging consciousness movement. But he didn't get there by being a tenured professor, or following any standard career path. Ken and Charles touch on that in today's episode, as well. Today we dive into storytelling with a master. Jessica Blank is a playwright, actor and director. But she thinks of herself first as storyteller — that is, a storyteller with a purpose. With her husband and writing partner, Erik Jensen, she wrote the documentary play The Exonerated, which told the true stories of people wrongly convicted on death row. The script came from interviews with former death row inmates telling their own stories. Their other documentary plays include Aftermath and How to Be a Rock Critic, about the legendary Lester Bangs. Jessica has also published three young adult novels, and co-directed a film of her first one, Almost Home. Jessica has deep insight into how telling the right stories can humanize the faceless, abstract victims of decisions that we make almost unconsciously as a society — and shift our perspective in a way that leads to real change. As she says in our discussion, storytelling create avenues to empathize with people who otherwise seem vastly different from us. In plant medicine circles, iboga is known as the most intense and physically demanding of entheogens. In the 1960s, it was discovered that iboga was remarkably effective for treating opiate addiction. Today a growing number of alternative health professionals and former addicts offer ibogaine treatment at centers in Mexico, Central and South America, and at underground locations in Europe and the United States. Even though iboga is classified as a Schedule 1 substance in the United States, which makes possession against the law. At the same time, as many as 4 million Americans now have an opiate addiction problem. In 2017, some 50,000 people died from overdoses. More people need to know about ibogaine. That's the mission behind Lakshmi Narayan's campaign, Iboga Saves, which includes a movie and a public education effort to help addicts find care. Paul Selig is a normal person who does extraordinary things. His spiritual Guides appear to him as voices, which he hears and then repeats. As he explains in his conversation with Ken, this ability came to him slowly, over many years, starting with a single word and growing to the length of entire books, which he receives like dictation over a matter of weeks and then delivers to the publisher unchanged. What Paul's Guides teach is the radical power of intention, attention and awareness to shift the material world. With each book — and there are 6 in print now — they take the teaching further. The scholar Jeffrey Kripal says these books are akin to the wisdom of the ancient Gnostics. The Guides themselves have said that they are of the order of Melchizedek, which is said have included Jesus as an initiate. Whatever the details of the lineage — the Guides don't seem to think the details are important — these transmissions communicate a high dose of Christ Consciousness. It may or not resonate for you — these things are so personal, and there's no right or wrong here — but no question, it's fascinating. You can go to the Paul Selig YouTube channel to hear the Guides' teachings. On today's episode Ken visited with Paul in his cozy Chelsea apartment, fire in the fireplace, and talked about Paul's personal experience on this remarkable journey. The Guides make an appearance towards the end. Paul Selig is considered to be one of the foremost spiritual channels working today. He has published 6 breakthrough works of channeled literature, including I Am the Word, The Book of Mastery, and the newly released The Book of Freedom. He was born in New York City, and received his master's degree from Yale. A spiritual experience in 1987 left him clairvoyant. Paul offers channeled workshops internationally. Beat Generation icon Allen Ginsberg was the most famous poet in America. But he was also a theorist, a strategist, and the counterculture field marshal who directed the troops of radical cultural change – revered by Tim Leary, Bob Dylan and John Lennon. It's hard to overstate just how strange and marginal the Beats were considered at the time, and how profound and pervasive their impact has been. They planted the seeds for open sexuality, psychedelic consciousness, meditation, yoga, environmentalism, green witchery, and more. You can even trace today's schism between blue and red states to the Beats and the cultural shifts they set in motion. Steven Taylor, Ginsberg's friend and collaborator for 20 years, is deeply knowledgeable about what Ginsberg called Secret History — the true but often hidden stories about the roots of our culture. He's also an accomplished author, poet and musician, and ran the writing program at the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University. The McKenna brothers — Terence and Dennis — are widely regarded as having paved the gringo road to the Amazonian plant medicine experience. Dennis' exploration of this territory dates back a half century, and he is among its most knowledgeable cartographers. In this episode, he and Ken discuss questions that arise when entheogens are an important part of your life: What's the difference between a plant psychedelic and a chemical? How should you choose a shaman? What role does integration play following a plant medicine journey? Are the entities you encounter under the influence of DMT real? What is actually going on when you trip? Dennis McKenna is an American ethnopharmacologist, lecturer and author. He is a founding board member and the director of ethnopharmacology at the Heffter Research Institute, a non-profit organization concerned with the investigation of the potential therapeutic uses of psychedelic medicines. He is an adjunct professor in the Center for Spirituality and Healing at the University of Minnesota. It revolves around the Visionary Art of painters Alex and Allyson Grey. Located about 2 hours north of New York City along the Hudson River in the town of Wappingers Falls, CoSM has long been a community where the psychedelic approach to the visionary experience is honored and supported, and the role of creativity in transformation is given pride of place. In today's episode, Ken talks with CoSM's head witch and den mother, Allyson Grey, about how she approaches her art as a form of service to others. And they are in the process of building a visionary art temple called Entheon. They develop special abilities that are present but latent in all of us, including the ability to see auras, clairvoyant communication, and the channeling of spirits. In the shamanic world view, the tool kit you use to heal the sick also provides the context for understanding what illness actually is — an energetic imbalance that has as much or more to do with your emotional center as it does with your physiological mechanics. Alberto Villoldo has trained as a psychologist and medical anthropologist, and has mastered the healing practices of the Amazonian and Andean shamans. The British philosopher Jules Evans joins Ken to discuss his own exploration of ecstasy, as chronicled in his book “The Art of Losing Control: A Philosopher's Search for Ecstatic Experience.” They start with the stoics and the practical side of ancient Greek philosophy, then dive into the many ways that the ecstatic is now making itself available in our world, after centuries of repression— from raves to next generation Jesus Freaks to plant spirit medicine to rock music. Along the way, Jules describes his own Near Death Experience and how that has shaped his relationship to the ecstatic.
