Fashion and cycling are intrinsically linked, from the elegant style of 50s icon Fausto Coppi, both on and off the bike, through the faster moving team kit designs of the 70s, 80s and 90s, to the huge range of the modern era. We caught up with world-famous clothes designer and cycling fanatic Sir Paul Smith and Rapha founder Simon Mottram, who have worked on several cycling clothing collections together, at the recent Rouleur Live show. The pair have turned a real love and obsession for cycling into huge businesses and they explained to Rouleur editor Edward Pickering where that passion comes from. We also talk to Charlotte Jarps, who paints bespoke designs and artworks on cycling shoes, and we roved the halls of Rouleur Live to ask industry figures what their favourite pro team kit of all time is. This week, we meet the craft makers and textile artists telling new stories through traditional techniques. Sewn in brightly coloured thread and African fabrics, artist Bisa Butler's stunning quilt portraits often focus on unknown African Americans. Creating her quilts from vintage photos found in the American National Archives, she pieces together their stories using carefully chosen textiles. Bisa talks to Chi Chi about her creative process, storytelling through her quilts and the portrait she'd like to stitch next. When master weaver Porfirio Gutierrez returned home to Mexico after years away, he found the traditional methods he'd grown up with were dying out and he was determined to do something about it. Porfirio Gutierrez tells our reporter Saskia Edwards how he has re-imagined Zapotec rug making to reflect both the ancient and modern world. South African artist Kimathi Mafafo explains how she uses embroidery to represent traditional women in her series, Voiceless and to empower local women by teaching them her craft. Plus: has a film, a book or an artwork ever changed the way you see the world? One of Britain's leading tailors, Sir Paul Smith tells us about an influential painting as he celebrates 50 years in the fashion industry. Presented by Chi Chi Izundu (Photo: Bisa Butler. The legendary fashion designer joins us to answer the question. Producer: Ryan Wilson
Every year, the Giro d'Italia shows off the best countryside Italy has to offer. It's not to say that France and Spain are not blessed with great scenery but Italy seems to provide the most consistently beautiful backdrop for the racing. The Giro's slogan – the toughest race in the most beautiful place – might have a touch of hype but it's probably fair to say it is the most photogenic of the three grand tours. In this episode of Our Giro, Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe look at the visual aspect of the Giro. We meet legendary photographer Graham Watson, who witnessed the drama of the Giro more more than three decades before retiring to New Zealand. Graham explains why the Giro was his favourite race to photograph and watch and looks back at some of the most memorable moments – from the duel between Stephen Roche and Roberto Visentini in 1987, to Marco Pantani's brilliance in 1998 and downfall in 99, to Alberto Contador coming straight from the beach to win a decade later. We also talk Italy's sense of style on and off the bike with Sir Paul Smith, who designed the maglia rosa in 2013, and Andy Storey, who runs through some of the most memorable Italian jerseys. Plus author and cultural historian Kassia St Clair talks about the power and charm of the colour pink. There's also the latest rider added to Ciro Scognamiglio's increasingly eclectic Giro Dream Team and François Thomazeau plays us out with La Vie En Rose. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. LINKS You can check out some of Graham Watson's finest photographs on his website (https://www.grahamwatson.com/) . You can also buy his books, prints and posters. Andy Storey's book on the history of cycling jerseys is called The Art of the Jersey. You can buy some great retro remakes at prendas.co.uk (https://www.prendas.co.uk/) Kassia St Clair's book is called The Secret Lives of Colour. In this episode we look at the art and psychology of descending the big mountains. As Our Giro approaches the big mountain stages, Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe we talk about some editions of the Giro d'Italia that have been decided going down hill. We hear from American rider Christian Vande Velde, who suffered a bad crash on a descent early on in the 2009 Giro d'Italia. Vande Velde struggled with the mental aspect of descending in races and Daniel speaks to him about how he worked to conquer those fears. We also speak to Steven Kruijswijk, the Dutchman who arguably could have won the Giro but for crashing into a snow wall on a descent in the 2016 Giro. There's also a reminder of the Tiramisù World Cup and Lionel's efforts at making the coffee-infused dessert are judged by Felicity Cloake. There's also controversy from the turbo trainer in Our Giro. World renowned designer Sir Paul Smith discusses his humble beginnings, what inspires him, and the lessons he's learnt throughout his career.
Although our interviewees are recognised as being both successful and accomplished in their chosen fields it wasn't always that way, their early careers involved a cross-section of jobs and experiences, a process known as sampling. We will delve deeper into this phenomena while also exploring their connection to cycling, as ultimately it is the bike that is the primary connector to the people we speak to in the OFF BIKE podcast. This, the first episode and it is with the icon that is, Sir Paul Smith, David Millar interviewed him, and in his own words:"I've known Paul personally since the early 2000's, we've had many interesting conversations over the years, he's offered me support while I was a racer, and advice as the founder of my new company, CHPT3. His generosity of spirit and simple kindness has always taken me aback, yet there's something else I wanted to delve deeper into, his spectrum of abilities and range of interests is mind boggling and I don't believe is truly appreciated by the wider public. The trajectory he has taken to arrive where he is today is a lesson to us all, especially in these days of quick gratification and impatience to succeed motivated too often by greed. His life has been a journey of learning fuelled by an insatiable curiosity, and somehow through it all he has kept an even keel, the love of his life and wife, Pauline, being his partner in the truest sense of the word. Anyway, I won't ramble on, I hope it all comes across in the interview."The Paul Smith website is here and within the site you'll find "Paul Smith's Cycling Scrapbook" with the foreword written by David Millar, it can be found here.Check out Paul on Instagram: his personal account is @paulsmith and the company is @paulsmithdesignDavid Millar's CHPT3 is here. This episode is slightly different to our usual format. We launched the November/ December issue of our magazine a couple of weeks ago, and some of the stories inside are so interesting that we thought they were might be worth discussing on the podcast, too. So I sat down with Jonny Wells, our features writer, and Harry Jarman, our Editor-in-Chief and Publisher, and we spoke about everything from Cristal champagne to our interviews with Sir Richard Branson, Sir Paul Smith and Ralph Lauren, not to mention our incredible cover story with Mr Hugh Jackman. If you're interested in the luxury market at the moment, the advice of great, great men, or just how a magazine is put together, it's a pretty interesting stuff. The Gentleman's Journal Podcast is brought to you by Martell cognac. Our thanks also to Mark's Club for their hospitality.
This week we have a first for Table Manners, Nottingham’s finest, SIR Paul Smith talks to us about his love of early mornings, ‘hospital food’, style, his beloved Pauline and London hotspots. Sir Paul is served!Produced by Alice Williams See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The Gardens Illustrated Talk 2016, held during Chelsea Flower Show week, brought together garden designer Luciano Giubbilei and fashion designer Sir Paul Smith They explore what for them are key relationships between fashion, plants, flowers and design
Fashion designer Sir Paul Smith interviewed by Lou Stoppad on 16 May 2013
Paul Smith’s introduction into fashion was completely accidental. At the age of 16, with no career plans or qualifications, Paul Smith was propelled by his father into a menial job at the local clothing warehouse in his native Nottingham. However his real passion was sport and his ambition was to become a professional racing cyclist, until aged 17 years when cycling-mad Paul was in a terrible accident.Six months in hospital followed and during this time Paul made some new friends. After leaving hospital he arranged to meet them again and by chance the meeting place was a local pub that was popular with the students from the local art college. They talked of Mondrian, Warhol, Kokoshka, David Bailey and listened to the Rolling Stones, Miles Davis and much more. It was then Paul knew he wanted to be a part of this colourful world of ideas and excitement.Within two years, Paul Smith was managing his first boutique in Nottingham and with the encouragement of his girlfriend Pauline Denyer (now wife) and a small amount of savings, opened a tiny shop in 1970. Paul started to take evening classes for tailoring and with the help of Pauline (an RCA fashion graduate), Paul was able to create what he wanted. By 1976 Paul showed his first menswear collection in Paris under the Paul Smith label. In business for over 40 years Paul Smith had established himself as the pre-eminent British designer. Paul Smith has an ability to anticipate, and even spark off trends not only fashion but in the wider context of popular culture. He manages to transmit a genuine sense of humour and mischief mixed with his love of tradition and the classicsToday there are 14 different collections; Paul Smith for men and women, PS by Paul Smith, Paul Smith Jeans, Paul Smith London, R.Newbold (Japan only), Paul Smith Black, Paul by Paul Smith, Paul Smith Accessories, Paul Smith Shoe. Paul Smith rugs, china, spectacles and fragrance are made under license. Designed in Nottingham and London, the Paul Smith collections are primarily produced in England and Italy while the fabrics used are mainly of Italian, French and British origin. The Paul Smith shops reflect the character of Paul and his designs, an unmistakable Englishness augmented by the unexpected. Each and every Paul Smith shop is totally different, from a shocking pink building with movie set styling on Melrose Avenue, LA, to a Japanese garden at the heart of the Jingumae store in Tokyo. Each shop is a showcase for diverse and eccentric objects complementing the clothing collections with an extensive selection of jewellery, books, art and antiques.Paul explains his eclectic aesthetic: “We’re a leading and uniquely British brand. We mix up one-off antiques with high quality tailoring: the chair you sit on when you buy a suit is for sale and we can wrap the suit and have the chair waiting for you when you get home.”Paul Smith is global - the collection is wholesaled to 66 countries and has 17 shops in England. Paul Smith shops are found in London, Paris, Milan, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Antwerp, Amsterdam, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Korea, and U.A.E. – and over 200 throughout Japan. Paul remains fully involved in the Japanese business; designing the clothes, choosing the fabrics, approving the shop locations and overseeing every development within the company. Paul Smith also has impressive and diverse showrooms in London, Paris, Milan, New York, and Tokyo.Paul Smith continues to be an integral part of the company; he is both designer and chairman. Paul Smith is continually involved in every aspect of the business and as a result, Paul Smith Limited retains a personal touch often lost in companies of a similar size.
