That must mean it's time for a lightning round - we're scooping up all the lovely questions and suggestions that just aren't big enough for the main event, and stuffing them in the blender. A solid end game trigger can be such an overlooked part of the design of a game. The conventional wisdom for most things is to start strong and finish strong, so we look at some of our favourite ways that games can end. Deep in the abyss of the quarantine, Kathleen and I recorded a searching and subdued episode about what is certainly considered a classic: Combat Commander. Yes, it's a war game, but essentially this is an Ameritrash skirmish game with a heavier euro points-scoring skeleton beneath those dice chuckin' trappings. Don't let a theme scare you, some classics are classics for a reason. That being said, we'll dovetail off of our last episode (Pax Porfiriana) and talk about why people may not want to play a war game. Is it the theme? Wait, it's just the theme? If so, why? Does a war game trivialize war? Does it glorify it? Finally, is it actually a classic? And is it worth checking it out? Pax games are a sort of micro-genre of their own. Medium to heavy-ish opaque games that smash up euro mechanics with some borderline aggressive player interactive. Oh, and they are [nearly] all historically based. I can tell you where I fall, but Kathleen has more complicated feelings. You may have heard about last year's Pax Pamir 2nd edition. We'll discuss–probably not for the last time–the question that keeps coming up here on ye ol' podcast: Does playing a board game recreationally about difficult, tumultuous, or violent periods in history inherently trivialize them? I bet you have an opinion, because we sure do. Oh, and by the way, this game is fan-friggin-tastic. *** NOTE: As of the publication of this episode, Pax Renaissance is currently on Kickstarter. Like, right now! ***Finally, apologies for any slight anachronisms (for example: the Oscars). We recorded this episode about three months ago. What’s your white whale? The one game you’ve been itching to get to the table for ages, but for whatever reason, just never have? Well, call me Ishmael, ’cause we’re counting down not just one, not five, but ten games each that we haven’t played, but really want to. Maybe this’ll be the kick in the pants we need … but probably not. Before we dust off our shelves of shame, we talk about CIV: Carta Impera Victoria, Raxxon, and Scythe: The Rise of Fenris. 01:36 - Carta Impera Victoria 04:49 - Raxxon 09:28 - Scythe: The Rise of Fenris 15:18 - Games we Want to Play 16:56 - Fog of Love 17:38 - Spirit Island 18:47 - Dungeon Petz 20:16 - Mini Rails 20:45 - Pax Porfiriana 21:42 - Keyflower 23:12 - Dogs of War 24:09 - Clockwork Wars 24:37 - Anachrony 25:24 - Lisboa 26:17 - Three Kingdoms Redux 26:59 - Sid Meier's Civilization: The Board Game 27:55 - ?!!? 28:50 - The Gallerist 29:36 - The Voyages of Marco Polo 30:13 - Diplomacy 30:58 - For-Ex 31:46 - Project: ELITE 32:40 - War of the Ring 33:23 - Roads & Boats 34:12 - Tammany Hall 35:04 - Fury of Dracula 35:51 - 1880: China 36:45 - Spartacus: A Game of Blood & Treachery 37:41 - Arkham Horror: The Card Game 38:36 - Crokinole 39:32 - An Infamous Traffic 40:38 - Chaos in the Old World 42:11 - Great Western Trail 43:06 - Dune 44:40 - Pandemic Legacy: Season 1
Ryan and Chad bring you this episode's topic, Deceptive Cuteness. Starting with a few examples from outside the board game sphere, we demonstrate how games can catch you off guard with their cute themes and/or artwork and follow up with an uppercut of complexity, feelings, or straight up meanness when you least expect it. Our feature game for the episode is Gloomhaven, a game that Ryan's recently started and Chad has been solo'ing for awhile now. This massive release from two years ago is still wowing dungeon crawlers with its massive tomb of quests. Find out what works and doesn't as your two hosts reflect on their recent plays. We wrap up with some games we've been playing lately, including Seal Team Flix, Pax Porfiriana, and Detective: A Modern Crime Story. Speaking of Detective, see if you can find the discount code for Mr. Dice Guy hidden in the show!
Alert! Keep your ears open for a exclusive discount code from our sponsor, Mr. Dice Guy, available until September 9th! Ryan, Adam and Chad take advantage of the recent GenCon released to talk about innovative design in board games. Is the future of board gaming bright, or just full of derivatives? Can't it be both? The feature game for this episode is one of the most innovative and popular releases from 2014 - Dead of Winter. This zombie game stands apart from the others as the first one to really "get it" (according to Adam) - find out what makes it so unique in a sea of flesh-eating clones. Finally we discuss some games we've played/are going to play, including Factory Funner, Dungeon Lords, Black Orchestra, Seal Team Flix, and Pax Porfiriana.
