When we envision the type of person who falls for a financial scam, there are usually a few key characteristics that come to mind:They may be elderly, using a landline phone, or in a state of panic as the person on the other end of the line informs them that if they don't hand over $10,000 immediately, they'll be arrested. But those stereotypes are just plain wrong. Charlotte Cowles, the Cut's financial advice columnist and a longtime freelance business columnist for The New York Times, fell for an elaborate new scam that involved Amazon, the FTC, threatening her child, and handing a box with $50,000 in cash through the window of the backseat of a car. In Mailbag, we hear from a listener who's wondering what the difference is between an hourly financial advisor and one that charges a flat fee. We also address how to shop around for title insurance when you're buying a home. In our news of the week, we talk about the big changes coming to the commissions we pay when we buy and sell homes, what the producer price index (or PPI) coming in hotter than expected means, and a new study about how Americans are feeling about their finances. Takeaways Younger adults are more likely to fall for online scams. Scammers use psychological tactics such as authority and isolation to manipulate their victims. Talking about scams and sharing experiences can help prevent others from falling victim. If something seems too good to be true, trust your gut and question it. Be cautious of phone calls or messages from unknown sources and verify information independently. Report scams to the appropriate authorities and seek support from trusted friends or family members. From Andy's Website: https://marriagekidsandmoney.com/about/I'm a husband and father to two awesome (and crazy) kids and we hail from the great state of Michigan. Since I'm all about my family, my goal is to give them the best life possible and strengthen our family tree for generations to come.In 2016, I got so geeked about this topic of family financial independence that I decided to start a blog and podcast about it. It began as a hobby and then morphed into a fun side hustle when people started to enjoy the information I was sharing. Fast forward to today, I've left my corporate event marketing career behind and am now a full-time content creator. Truly a dream come true!I've had the pleasure of sharing our family journey on topics like:How We Paid Off $50,000 of Debt in Less Than 1 YearThe 7 Steps We Took to Become Mortgage Free by 35 Years OldHow We Became Millionaires in Less Than 10 Years (starting from -$50,000)By sharing our family's financial journey, we've had the great opportunity to be featured in major media outlets like Time, CNBC, Kiplinger's Personal Finance and NBC News!It was a huge surprise to me when the first news outlet called me out as a “Personal Finance Expert.” Honestly, I didn't feel like an expert … I just felt like a normal guy who was dedicated to helping his family get to the next level and loves helping other families do the same.

But what about America's 5.5 million service professionals who live on a tipped based income? How can they manage their finances in a way that supports the quality of life they desire, and puts them on a track to reach financial freedom? That's the conversation that Vince has on this episode of CFO at Home with Personal Finance Expert, Money Coach, and author of Tipped, Barbara Sloan Key Topics Barbara's road to Financial Independence (:57) Lean FI, Fat FI (3:09) Financial Challenges of Service Workers (6:26) Budgeting for Service Workers (11:46) Emergency Fund for Service Workers (27:21) Investing for Service Workers (30:28) Mindset (36:46) Resources https://www.tippedfinance.com/ Tipped: The life changing guide to financial freedom for waitresses, bartenders, strippers, and all other service industry professionals.
