So, how can employers better understand workplace happiness and use this data to attract and retain talent? My guest this week is Matt Ward, Head of Recruitment Services at WorkL. For their latest research report, WorkL surveyed 400,000 employees in 26 industries across 100 countries on the key drivers of workplace happiness. The results give us some fantastic insights that can help make talent acquisition and retention strategies significantly more effective. Many people desire happiness, but is there a science to being happy? Can we learn to be happy regardless of external challenges? Are there evidence-based tools and practices for managing emotions and enhancing our lives? We spoke with Arthur C. Brooks, who co-authored the book Build the Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier with Oprah Winfrey, about using science to understand happiness from a psychological and biological perspective, the intersection of happiness with our environment, the impact of social media, the benefits of healthy relationships, and how we can actively teach ourselves to live happier lives.

We wrap up our series on Happierness featuring Atlantic columnist and Harvard Professor Arthur Brooks, and Oprah Winfrey, who just co authored the book, “Build The Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier.” In the last episode I also talked with my brother, Jared Angaza, and we discussed further aspects of this grand, cultural pursuit of happiness and what is at the root of it. This is my Big Idea, The Big Takeaway & The Big Action episode to distill it all down, and I found six primary issues around happiness that stood out from our conversations. We continue our series on Happierness which we kicked off with Atlantic columnist and Harvard Professor, Arthur Brooks. Arthur's new book with Oprah Winfrey is called Build The Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier. This issue of happiness is significant to me for two reasons: 1) happiness is such a hot topic because we as a culture are not finding ourselves…happy, and 2) I feel we are mostly dealing with the symptoms regarding happiness and not the root issues. To dig further into what I feel are root issues, I have with me…Jared Angaza. Jared is a strategist, activist, and storyteller behind many influential brands and campaigns. And he's my brother and business partner and someone who I ponder the topics of drive and motive and meaning with…a lot You can watch this full episodes on YouTube - just search for “What Drives You with Kevin Miller” What Drives You is brought to you by Ziglar, your premier source for equipping Life and Leadership coaches. We continue our series on Happierness with happiness researcher and evangelist Arthur Brooks. This is part two where we go behind the scenes to find out What Drives Arthur in his personal life as he strives to practice what he preaches. I appreciate that Arthur is up front with the fact that he's not naturally prone to be in a so-called, happy state. He must proactively work at it. Me too. Arthur again is a Harvard Professor, a columnist at The Atlantic, a very in demand speaker, and author of 12 books. I had him on the show in 2023 for his book, From Strength to Strength: Finding Success, Happiness, and Deep Purpose in the Second Half of Life. The message in that book continues to influence me. This time he's back with his new book co authored with Oprah Winfrey, titled, Build The Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier. Arthur is a very intentional person and deeply considers all areas of his life. When I asked him about his values regarding his career he spoke to his efforts to stay aware of the why of what he does as opposed to just the what. In his pursuit of health I found it interesting that he cited he's not necessarily happy to be exercising, but it helps him be less unhappy overall. This episode is quite an interesting journey through the lifestyle of one of our cultures leading experts on happiness. In this episode we begin a series on happierness. As you're about to hear, we can't live a meaningful life and just be in a state of happy all the time. We'd actually miss out on some of the most rich aspects of our existence. And probably die early. But amongst the necessary challenges of life, we can absolutely be happier, which improves...literally everything. My expert guest on the topic, who is back with us for the second time, is Arthur Brooks. His book Strength To Strength has been pivotal for me, and so many others, and was the focus of our first series together. Arthur is a professor of management practice at Harvard Business School where he teaches renowned courses on happiness. His incredibly popular, How to Build a Life column at the Atlantic was found and followed by Oprah Winfrey and now Arthur and Oprah have written a book together titled, Build The Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier. I encourage you to look at Arthur's new online workshop, The Art and Science of Happiness at scienceofhappier.com The more happiness you experience, the more your drive is fueled. And this is our focus today. Today's episode builds on our previous episode about the Arthur Brooks and Oprah Winfrey book: 'Build the Life You Want' – The Art and Science of Getting Happier. The authors brought a ton of information about emotions that we didn't have time to cover so today's episode will go deeper into what they have to say. As I read the book, I broke up the emotional self-management sections into 6 steps which can be a path to make us much happier as a person freeing us from being managed by your feelings. Yay!! At the end of the discussion about emotions, Oprah says this: “…today, everything I do, anything I make, any suggestion I float or advice I give – it's all about the offering. If it works, it works. If it's accepted, it's accepted. If not, I have lost nothing because I had no attachment to a particular result.” This she says has made her a much, much happier life and she wishes the same for all of us. Arthur Brooks teaches a popular course at Harvard Business School called “Leadership and Happiness.” One important underpinning of the course is that science can help us to better understand what will actually make us happier – and Arthur has worked hard to incorporate these concepts into his own life. Recently, he teamed up with Oprah Winfrey to write "Build The Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier." In those pages, they consider a number of thought-provoking questions, including “How can we mobilize our lives toward greater happiness? How do we translate ideas about happiness into action? And how do we take control of our present and our future?” In this episode, Arthur joins host Karen Dillon – co-author with Clayton Christensen of “How Will You Measure Your Life?” – to dive into these questions. Throughout this wide-ranging conversation, he considers common misconceptions about happiness, the importance of emotional self-management, and how we can all change our habits to truly become happier. Relatedly, they discuss strategies that can be employed to become more metacognitive, the four pillars of happiness, and the neurochemical cascade of falling in love, to name but a few of the many conversation highlights. Arthur also reflects on the fact that so much of the knowledge that is shared in “Build The Life You Want” is practical and yet relatively unknown. Listen to learn more about both the art and science of becoming happier!
Everyone wants more happiness in their life, but most pursue it incorrectly, mistakenly believing it can be found in places like the promotion or the bank account. Instead, happiness is the by-product of pursuits less appreciated. Like the quality of your relationships with friends and family. Doing hard things. Creating value for others. And being in communion with the transcendent. Here to help us better orient our lives towards happiness is Arthur C. Brooks, returning for round two on the podcast. Arthur is a social scientist, in-demand public speaker, and professor at both the Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Business School where he teaches courses on leadership, happiness, and social entrepreneurship. In addition, he is the creator of the popular How to Build a Life column for The Atlantic, and the author of 13 books, including the #1 New York Times bestseller From Strength to Strength. His latest offering—a book he co-authored with Oprah Winfrey—is entitled, Build the Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier which is filled with practical, social science, and neuroscience-backed practices to strengthen what he dubs the four pillars of happiness: family, friendship, work, and faith. In this conversation, we discuss what happiness is and isn't, how to experience more of it, and the concrete steps and practical solutions you can adopt to build a better blueprint for a more fulfilling future. Arthur is a treasure. I could have talked to him all day. This one is wisdom-packed and overflowing with life-changing and actionable advice. Arthur Brooks is a social scientist, Harvard professor, and bestselling author committed to helping people find success, happiness and deep meaning. He's such a profound thought-leader in the space that he just released a book with Oprah called Build the Life You Want, The Art and Science of Getting Happier. We explore a deeply thought-provoking conversation about the pursuit of happiness through progress, learning, and understanding. As simple as the idea of happiness seems on the surface, understanding the complexities of what it means to pursue it, relish tt, and define the meaning of it without attachment and dogmatic viewpoints escapes many people. In the second part of our conversation, we tip the scales and really explore some controversial areas which is such a gift: The concept of beliefs becoming a religion The topic of political differences and abuse being reasons for family schisms. The idea of making decisions that go against our natural instincts. By the end of this podcast, I want for your challenge your beliefs and reassess where you are in your pursuit of happiness. Are you exploring life with meaning on your journey or trapped in misconceptions and social constructs that distort your ability to ever be happy. ARTHUR BROOKS QUOTES: “Each of us is an entrepreneur in the startup of our lives. That's what really matters. And what we need is to always have a clear intention…” “The best thing that you can possibly do is to think about the emotions that you're feeling, what they mean and how best to use them.” “All the things we really want in life. All of our deep desires are complex. All of our solutions are complicated, and we're throwing complicated solutions at complex problems and we're not getting happier.” “They're not entrepreneurial in the part of life that matters the most, which is their heart.” “The first one is that there is meaning. You need to find it and live up to it.” Follow Arthur Brooks: Website: https://arthurbrooks.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/arthurbrooks YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@arthurbrooks123 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/arthurcbrooks/ Sponsors: Visit https://bit.ly/WildHealthImpact to apply for membership for a better alternative to traditional healthcare. Oprah Winfrey and Arthur Brooks want you to be happier - so the TV megastar and the Harvard academic teamed up to write a book setting out the steps you need to take to be a little happier each day. Over the summer, Dr Laurie Santos read Build the Life You Want, the Art and Science of Getting Happier and loved it. So she recorded a conversation with Arthur touching on how his son found meaning in the marine corps; why you should remove the all mirrors from your home; and whether happiness experts can ever be happy themselves. “Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness…” You've heard this many times before, and yet have you ever wondered why life and liberty are automatically given and assumed while happiness isn't . Why are millions of people around the world chasing happiness and very few ever “catch” it? Some key areas where we dive hard and deep on that I think you will find so interesting on the first of this two part episode are: The role of progress in human flourishing The danger of being attached and dogmatic with your beliefs The importance not allowing your views to define you What I enjoyed most about our conversation was how far we explored and unpacked in areas that are potentially controversial topics like religious beliefs, political differences, and family schisms. Get ready to challenge your base assumptions and view existential threats from new angles. ARTHUR BROOKS QUOTES: “The idea that you can be blissful and happy all the time is not just unrealistic, it's unhealthy. It would be terrible if you were happy all the time.” “If you don't defend your positions, if you admit to the possibility that you're not right, that you learn and you update when people say things that you think are crazy, you say, tell me more that you're actually going to get better.” “Any time you use your values as a weapon, you've denigrated their moral content. You've eviscerated the effectiveness of your approach. But if you use your values as a gift it might not always be taken in a charitable way.” Follow Arthur Brooks: Website: https://arthurbrooks.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/arthurbrooks YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@arthurbrooks123 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/arthurcbrooks/ Sponsors: Visit www.WildHealth.com/Impact to apply for membership for a better alternative to traditional healthcare.
