THE MEDICAL RECORD: HEALTH AND THE HOLIDAYS It's time to talk about your health, and there are some holiday related issues we should be aware of. The latest numbers show that less than 15% of us have the updated Covid vaccine - this as we are gathering with friends and family in the midst of the viral soup of Covid, RSV and influenza - which is already clogging hospital emergency rooms. Also, there is an annual spike in heart attacks around the holidays. Why is that and what can you do to protect yourself? And what time are you having your Christmas feast? There's new work that tries to answer the question: is it bad to eat late at night? Libby Znaimer is joined by Dr. Alisa Naiman, Family Physician and Founder and Medical Director of The Medical Station in Toronto; Dr. Malcolm Moore, Medical Oncologist at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre; and  Dr. Fahad Razak, General Internist at Unity Health Toronto to discuss. MIDDLE-EAST PROTESTS TARGETING MALLS AND A SPIKE IN ANTI-SEMITISM There was a very disturbing incident at the Eaton Centre last weekend when masked kaffiyeh wearing protesters stormed the shopping mall to protest an ad from the Spanish clothing chain Zara, wwhen a shopper took issue with that one of them uttered a death threat. It happened right in front of a police officer but nothing was done. This comes amid the spike in anti-Semitic hate crimes we have been reporting in our news. And they aren't just targeting Jews. Some pro-Palestinian protesters are calling on their supporters to...quote...Shut down Christmas. Libby is joined by Noah Shack, Vice President, Countering Antisemitism & Hate at UJA Federation Of Greater Toronto; and Councillor James Pasternak, Ward 6 York Centre to unpack all this. TUNE INTO THE TOWN: PRESERVING HERITAGE SITES Libby Znaimer is joined by Deputy Mayor Ana Bailão, Ward 9 Davenport, Councillor Brad Bradford, Ward 19 Beaches East York and Councillor James Pasternak, Ward 6 York Centre. It's Thursday - the day we focus on all things municipal and with less than a month before our municipal elections some members of the South Asian community are upset about the date. Diwali falls on October 24 - it is a key religious and cultural holiday celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains. The argument is that it is usually celebrated with family after work and if people have to choose between that and voting well they will choose family celebrations and that could lead to lower turnout and representation for these communities. On the other hand, the government says those who can't make it to the polls on election day can vote by mail, at advance voting stations or by proxy — Also, municipal election dates are fixed under a provincial act. Then there is the saga of of the heritage designation denied for the old China Lilly factory - a place that has huge cultural significance for the Chinese community. We'll get into the details but to me there is a broader conversation turning our banks on preservation of our built heritage - Toronto learned a lesson after some of our best buildings were destroyed in the 60's we brought in heritage and in my opinion it is now under threat -  usually in the name of building housing but the affordable housing we need is not what gets built. HERE IS HOW MUCH OVERTURNING BILL 124 WOULD COST THE PROVINCE Libby Znaimer is now joined by Peter Weltman, Ontario's Financial Accountability Officer. Ontario needs about 135,000 public sector workers over the next 5 years and may have to boost wages to get them. That is the conclusion of FAO Peter Weltman - he's talking about PSW's nurses, child care workers - not top level bureaucrats. According to the Toronto Sun overturning the infamous Bill 124 would cost the province $8.4 billion if a court challenge against it is successful. Meanwhile the FAO says  Bill 124 has allowed the government to save as much as $9.7 billion between 2019 to 2026-27. CANADIANS ARE TIGHTENING THEIR HOUSEHOLD BUDGETS AMID INFLATION Libby Znaimer is now joined by Barry Choi, Personal Finance Expert. According to a new Angus Reid Institute poll, nine out of ten Canadians are tightening their household budgets amid inflation and higher prices. Remember that the Bank of Canada increased the interest rate yet again in September--up 75 basis points to 3.25 per cent.  The survey shows that 66 respondents are cutting back on spending, while 50 per cent of them are delaying major purchases.  Barry weighs in on the latest and details what Canadians should be thinking about as they work to preserve and strengthen their personal finances. Can you believe it’s been almost 4 years since Barry Choi from Money We Have on the show? We’ve been friends for years now, and he was guest number 7! Since so much has happened in our lives since that interview, I needed to have him back on the show now that he works full-time for himself as a personal finance & travel expert. As I mentioned at the beginning of this episode, I’ve done a few unofficial meetups with podcast listeners the past few months, and the feedback I got was to have someone on the show to talk about credit card reward programs and travel tips specifically for Canadians. Well, of course I thought of Barry who is always in the news or on TV sharing his wisdom on how to get the most value out of your credit cards and how to travel on a budget without it feeling like you’re doing budget travel. Here are some great tips and resources he shared on the show. Include Travel in Your Budget If travel is one of your big values in life (it is for me!), then you need to add it as a line item in your budget. Don’t just book a trip and figure out how to pay for it later. Research where you want to go, price out the cost, then start putting away amounts every month until you can afford it. It’s what both Barry and I do, and honestly it’s the only way to afford travel without getting into debt. For me, I put away money every month for trips I take with my husband and trips I do on my own (usually work-related like conferences or retreats). In terms of how much to save, it depends on where you plan on going. As long as you’re saving a good amount for your emergency fund, retirement and your other financial goals, it’s up to you how much to save for travel. Use Deal Sites to Save Big I’ve used deal sites for years, like Kayak, Booking.com, Expedia, Trivago (you get the picture), and to me it’s the best way to get the best price for flights, car rentals and accommodation. Yes, it can take some time and effort to really figure out the best time, place and dates to travel, but it’s worth it if you can save hundreds if not thousands of dollars! Just think, that savings can be used for excursions, food or shopping to make your trip even better! Travel in the Off-Season You’ve heard this tip before, but it’s true. If you want to save big, travel during that location’s off-season. I’m so used to doing this, I don’t even know what it’s like to go somewhere during the on-season. And I don’t want to! It’s actually really nice to avoid the hordes of tourists, even if it means going somewhere during spring or fall.  Best No-fee Credit Cards Here are Barry’s picks for the best no-fee credit cards in Canada. Just remember, even though it’s no fun paying an annual fee for a credit card, you usually get better benefits with those cards than no-fee cards. American Express SimplyCash Preferred Card Rogers World Elite Mastercard Tangerine Money-Back Card For full episode show notes, visit https://jessicamoorhouse.com/189

Barry Choi wasn't always a personal finance expert.  Back in his 20s he didn't know anything about investment fees or what he should be investing in. But when someone suggested that he might be paying more than he needed to, he quickly found that it was even worse than he thought. That incident from 10 years ago kicked Barry into high gear and created the personal finance expert we know him to be today. Barry is also one of Canada's leading travel experts and blogs about his travels, and various personal finance topics on his site moneywehave.com Barry has been published in the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, Financial Post and MoneySense magazine, just to name a few, and he's made many appearances on Canadian TV over the years. Barry joined me in Toronto to tell his personal finance story. NEXT EPISODE 36 - Gordon Stein

Jessica Moorhouse travelled from Toronto to Las Vegas over one week using only a chip and pin credit card. It's October 2017 and I'm at the SIBOS global financial services conference in Toronto. I post something about the conference on Facebook and my friend Jessica Moorhouse comments that she'll be at the conference tomorrow. I had just found out that she would be participating in this payments race - think of it as the amazing race for money nerds. It turned out the race was going to start the next day from the conference that I was already attending. I was able to get an interview with all 5 contestants in the race, Jessica being the only Canadian. All 5 racers had to make it from Toronto to Las Vegas in a week, using different methods of payment. There was bitcoin, gold, contactless ring/apple pay, cash, and Jessica had to use a chip and pin credit card. Maybe you're thinking, that's easy. You can pay for everything with a chip and pin credit card in North America, right? That's what the race is all about. The organizers didn't do a trial run from Toronto to Vegas and try all of those methods to see if it was possible. The race was created to find out if it is possible. So Jessica and the other contestants headed out into the unknown to see whether it would be a breeze or if they would run into obstacles along the way. Jessica joined me a few weeks after the race to tell her side of the story. I hosted and organized my very first event recently, called the Millennial Money Meetup. It was graciously sponsored by EQ Bank, and featured fellow money experts and bloggers Barry Choi, Michelle Summerfield and Daniel Teo. This event was all about creating a community and a safe space for Millennials to get together and talk about something that's generally considered taboo...money. Not only did we get a full house, I got a lot of great feedback and everyone had a rockin' time! This is definitely the first of many Millennial Money Meetups, and I can't wait for the next one. John Robertson, the author of the DIY investing book The Value of Simple, and I discuss the why and how of index fund investing, his side gig as an investment coach and how investing can be simple (if you're doing it right). Long episode description: In this episode I talk with John Robertson, the blogger behind Holy Potato and the author of The Value of Simple, about one of my favourite topics — index fund investing. I explored this subject a bit in my podcast episode with Barry Choi, but John breaks down the principles even further and explains what actionable steps you need to take to become a do-it-yourself investor.  If you are really interested in going the DIY investing route, I highly suggest reading John’s book. I did and I seriously learned a lot about what is involved and what the best ways to get started are. We mentioned a number of resources in this episode, and here they are below. Barry Choi, from the investing and travel blog Money We Have, and I talk about DIY investing through index funds and using the Couch Potato method. Long episode description:  If you’ve been a reader of my blog throughout these 3 and half years, then you already know that I am by far no expert when it comes to investing. Not for lack of desire, but I guess when it comes to personal finance I just stick to what I’m comfortable with — saving and budgeting. That being said, I know that in order to continue to increase my net worth, I need to do a better job of investing. Right now, I’m justing investing in mutual funds in my RRSP and TFSA, but I definitely want to diversify in the future. That’s where Barry Choi comes in. Barry has been a DIY investor for a number of years and has been writing about his experience on his blog Money We Have as well. Since I really wanted to learn more about his investing strategies, I thought he would be the perfect podcast guest for this episode. We talk about a lot of topics, including how to get started as a DIY investor and how to implement the Couch Potato method of investing, so make sure you check out some of these handy resources Barry mentioned on the show below. As an added bonus, I am also giving away a cop of John Robertson’s investing for beginners book The Value of Simple: A Practical Guide to Taking the Complexity Out of Investing. You may already know John from his blog Holy Potato, but Barry highly praised this book (and gave me a copy to check out), so I’m super pumped to be giving one of you lucky winners a copy too!
