In communities across Ontario, nominations are now open for October's municipal elections. It is local democracy in action: candidates put their names in the hat, lay out their promises — and you vote. But is that enough? Does democracy demand more of us?On this week's episode of Village Media's Closer Look podcast, we revisit a very timely interview with an author who has some urgent things to say about the state of democracy around the world — and why it's really not enough to simply cast a vote and move along.Peter MacLeod is co-author of the new book Democracy's Second Act: Why Politics Needs the Public, along with Richard Johnson.Reach out to Frisco and Scott
What does it look like to build a life around conviction, doubt, and compassion - all at once?In this episode of The Journey, Father Peter MacLeod Miller shares a path that moves from Sydney's cathedral world, to working with homeless communities across the city and the outback, and eventually to becoming Rector at St Matthew's Anglican Church in Albury. But this isn't simply a story about ministry or church leadership. It's a conversation about questioning institutions from the inside, confronting the realities of human suffering, and continually reshaping what faith and service mean in a modern world. From studying law while being drawn to the beauty of cathedral music, to working in some of Australia's most vulnerable communities, Father Peter's journey is anything but conventional. What stands out most is his focus on people over systems - and compassion over certainty. It's an episode that invites you to reflect on belief, authority, and whether institutions truly serve the people they're built for.⭐ If you enjoyed this episode, please follow, share or leave a review - it helps more people discover these stories.Proudly brought to you by BMG & 1494 2AY.

James Stewart (J.D.M.) speaks with Peter MacLeod and Richard Johnson about their book, Democracy's Second Act: Why Politics Needs the Public. Democracy's Second Act is a smart, story-driven blueprint for how democracies can move beyond gridlock and cynicism by giving ordinary citizens real power between elections. Drawing on vivid case studies from Ireland, Canada, France, and beyond, MacLeod and Johnson show how new democratic institutions are already revitalizing politics and creating fresh opportunities for reform-minded leaders. Lively, hopeful, and grounded in practice as well as theory, it's perfect for readers who are looking for clear, engaging ideas about how democracy can evolve. Peter MacLeod is the founder and principal of MASS LBP, where for nearly two decades he has been at the forefront of democratic innovation championing a new style of politics rooted in deliberation and shared power. A trusted advisor to governments at all levels, he is one of Canada's leading voices on democracy, civic trust, and active citizenship. Richard Johnson is a former journalist and current policy director at MASS LBP. His writing has appeared in The Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, The Walrus, Reader's Digest, This Magazine, The New Quarterly, and many others. When Prime Minister Mark Carney took the floor at the recent Liberal convention, he described a future where AI benefits all Canadians – not just a lucky few. It's an optimistic vision. But according to political theorist Hélène Landemore and democratic innovator Peter MacLeod, our current political system just isn't capable of delivering on it. Instead, Landemore, a Yale professor and the author of Politics Without Politicians, argues that ordinary citizens – not politicians – should be the ones calling the shots. MacLeod has spent more than twenty years putting that idea into practice in Canada. His new book is Democracy's Second Act: Why Politics Needs The Public. Our conversation isn't really about artificial intelligence. But it is about whether our current form of politics is capable of governing it – or whether a radical new technology demands an equally radical form of governance. This weekend, the people of Ontario showed us the power of collective action by standing up against Premier Ford's outrageous $30 million Gravy Plane. With the #FightFord protests set for April 25, it's clear that citizens are fed up and ready to demand accountability. In Alberta, Premier Danielle Smith is attempting to manipulate electoral ridings for her own gain, highlighting a critical moment for all Canadians: we must unite to protect our democracy from those who seek to consolidate power for their own interests. Now, more than ever, we need to heed the warnings of Prime Minister Carney about the dangers posed by Trump's escalating trade war. We must prepare for a future where we might have to navigate without our largest trading partner. But what can we truly do about it? How can we ensure our leaders at all levels are held accountable during these trying times?Join us for an enlightening conversation with Peter MacLeod, the author of **Democracy's Second Act**, alongside host Laura Babcock. Together, we'll explore how we can draw lessons from countries like Finland, Sweden, and Hungary to fortify our democratic values right here at home. It's time to take action!
