Host: Darryl S. Chutka, M.D. [@chutkaMD] Guest: Joselyn R. Lebow, Ph.D., L.P. Unfortunately, mental health problems are common in our youth. A recent study by the CDC found that among adolescents aged 12 to 17, just under 21% had experienced a major depressive episode within the past year. Among high school students, more than 35% reported feeling sad or hopeless, with nearly 20% seriously contemplating suicide and mental health disorders are not limited to our teens. Over 17% of children aged 2 through 8 have had a diagnosis of a mental, behavioral or developmental disorder. Are mental health disorders in our youth increasing? How might depression present in a child or adolescent? How common is suicide in our youth and how often are suicide attempts successful? Is your child's mental health hiding in plain sight? This week's episode of the Baby Tribe podcast tackles the monumental subject of childhood mental health and parenting. We reflect on our own experiences growing up under protective parents and discuss how open communication can better equip children to handle life's challenges. We dive deep into cultural differences in parenting styles, the importance of fostering resilience, and why addressing mental health openly is crucial, especially given the stark statistics on youth suicide in Ireland.  Today's children face a multitude of stressors, from school exams and body image issues to the pressures of social media and future anxieties. Joined by child psychiatrist Dr. Elizabeth Barrett, we examine how misinformation online compounds these problems and why it's vital for schools to provide accurate mental health resources. Additionally, we address the shocking data on racism and religious discrimination affecting young minds. Dr. Barrett offers practical strategies to help parents recognize emotional distress in children and emphasizes the necessity of tailored mental health support, enhancing school-based services, and improving accessibility to CAMHS.  Finally, we explore the intricate relationship between social media and adolescent mental health. While acknowledging the risks of online bullying and the impact of social media on self-esteem, we also highlight potential benefits, like supportive online communities. Parents will appreciate our practical tips on setting phone boundaries and the delicate balance between monitoring and allowing freedom. We call for stronger responsibilities from social media companies and legislators to create safer online environments. Wrapping up, we stress the foundation of good mental health: consistent sleep, regular exercise, and reconnecting with nature. Joe Tucker, CEO of Enveric Biosciences, discusses the use of neuroplastogen therapies for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Enveric has developed the Psybrary, a portfolio of compounds inspired by psilocybin that bind to the serotonin receptor in the brain and induce neuroplasticity without the hallucinations. The lead candidate EB-003 is intended to be administered orally and taken regularly as a maintenance therapy. Joe explains, "This whole neuroplastogen space was recently discovered, and it was discovered through academic research that we're looking at on the effects of these agents we call psychedelics, psilocybin being the active ingredient in magic mushrooms and a very well-known psychedelic agent. It was in looking at psilocybin and other molecules known to be psychedelic agents like ayahuasca and LSD and others that scientists realized that what's going on is you're activating a particular receptor in the brain - something called the serotonin 5-HT2A receptor. So, at Enveric we thought this was a great opportunity because of some of the early work that others had done in using the actual magic mushroom." "This is a whole new area of research and science. It is not known what shape of a molecule will induce a hallucination versus not inducing hallucination, for example, and what shape will strongly induce the neuroplasticity that we're looking for so that the brain can essentially be repaired versus not induce it. So, we had to develop our own internal artificial intelligence tool that was trained by the other molecules that had been designed previously or were naturally occurring. Then, we continued to train it as we made our thousand molecules and got our AI operating more and more intelligent." #Enveric #Psilocybin #Hallucinogenic #MentalHealth #NeuroplastogenTherapies #NeuropsychiatricDisorders #PTSD #PostTraumaticStressDisorder enveric.com Listen to the podcast here

If you don't identify with one of the labels in the title, you likely know someone who does. As with all labels, however, they don't completely define us. Those of us who have these patterns are not the same, nor struggle to the same extent.  Still, this psychological construct has been repeatedly recognized in the mental health field. Perhaps because it is so common, you won't find it included as a condition or personality disorder in the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders).  Nonetheless, this way of being in the world can be painful and stressful. At the very least, these tendencies can keep us from enjoying the full potential of our lives. In this episode, I discuss:* Overlapping definitions from attachment theory, family systems theory and 12-step programs* Common early experiences * Cultural messages* Suspected genetic variants* Difficulties with boundaries* Communication style* Common behaviors* Common emotions* Education and resources* Parenting our inner childTo receive the newsletter (text and audio) in your mailbox each week, subscribe at: https://www.courtneysnydermd.com or on Substack: https://courtneysnydermd.substack.com/ Medical Disclaimer:This newsletter is for educational purposes and not intended or implied to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment for either yourself or others, including but not limited to patients that you are treating (if you are a practitioner). Susan Bartz Herrick, MFA, EdD., is a retired professor at UNC-Fayetteville, St. Andrews University, and Methodist University. Early in her career, she was a Community Liaison Specialist at HCA Cumberland Psychiatric Hospital and Treatment Center, giving seminars on Mental Health Disorders and Addiction. Susan Herrick's memoir follows the story of her beloved and only son, Luke, through his struggle with opioid addiction, recovery and sobriety, and untimely and heartbreaking death. Luke suffered a near-fatal car accident that left him partially paralyzed and addicted to Oxycontin, the very drug that helped save his life.  Susan turned to the streets to obtain Suboxone, a legal but medically restricted opioid blocker, in an attempt to save her son's life. Remembering this, she writes, “The day I became my son's drug dealer, we both died, in a way.” This poignant and compelling memoir exposes the rampant prescribing of Oxycontin, upwards of 600mg daily in cases like Luke's, and the role overprescribing plays in the disease of Substance Use Disorder (SUD). Through Luke's story, Herrick addresses failed public policies, misguided medical practices, societal stigmas, and enabling tendencies of loved ones that hinder recovery for those afflicted with SUD. There are many outside agencies and clinicians who provide a wide range of other options for therapy that you just won't find in the school setting, and neurofeedback therapy is one of them.  Our special guest, Dianne Kosto, will be sharing her story along with some very valuable information so tune in now.About This Episode's Special Guest:Website: www.symmetryneuropt.comSocial Media: https://www.facebook.com/SymmetryNeuroPT/https://www.instagram.com/symmetryneuropt/https://www.linkedin.com/company/symmetryneuropt/https://twitter.com/symmetryneuropthttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UC52hEehDheZTZ3NrzIWmHOQ*EMAIL LIST*Click here to join my email list for more free content to help you on your parenting journey!or go to strongermindsstrongeryouth.com/jointhelist*REACH OUT & SHARE*Email me your stories to share with others parents just like you @ jessika@strongermindsstrongeryouth.com *CONNECT WITH ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA!!!* & *TAG ME IN YOUR STORIES!!!*#jessikashields or @strongermindsstrongeryouthGet Social to Stay Connected!!!FB: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthInstagram: @StrongerMindsStrongerYouthLinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/jessikashieldsTo access more Podcast resources, visit strongermindsstrongeryouth.comThank you for listening!
