In these roles he has led businesses to world-class performance against industry peers and the top centile when benchmarked against all industries. Michael has also held senior positions outside of EHS – as business director for a pharma division and Strategy, Mergers and Acquisition director for EMEA/Asia regions. Currently, Michael is the Vice President of Social and Environmental Responsibility for Jabil, based in Zurich, heading EHS and Sustainability globally. In this role, he balances various functional activities, from site and people, social responsibility and human rights, HSE, health and wellbeing — linking this to a clear and effective sustainability strategy creating business value. Michael earned his BSc (Joint Hons) in Chemistry and MSc in Environmental and Pollution Control from the University of Manchester and his MBA from Henley Management College. Michael Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: The history of sustainability at Jabil How to engage employees with sustainability goals across a large number of sites and employees Jabil's strategy to achieving reduction in emissions without purchasing carbon credits: reduce, produce, procure The challenges to achieving scope 3 emissions reductions a large number of suppliers The importance and incorporation of health and wellness into Jabil's strategy Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals Michael's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give to sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? Make it real. If it's window dressing or something like that, you will very soon lose traction within the employees or your other stakeholders. So make it real. Understand what your stakeholders want. Not that you can always do things for all of the stakeholders, but you can prioritize the ones where you can do that. By doing that, look to create some real value, both in terms of the companies that you work for, but also in the communities and the people in and outside of the business which will also be impacted by what you do. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? You might find this actually a bit strange; greenwashing, or the fact that greenwashing is now being looked at more closely. Right now, as I said earlier, we really are doing things in a way that is having a positive impact. We want to continue doing that. It is also important that people who make big announcements about things but aren't really delivering anything are called out. You see in the SEC in the USA that's already happened. There has been some falling out in terms of greenwashing. I also think that the way that legislation is changing in the EU, the European Union Corporate Sustainability Reporting Director, for instance, and link to the taxonomy, means that you can't make claims as easily as you could do before without actually backing them up better. For me that's a really good thing. What is one book you would recommend sustainability leaders read? This is something actually when I was doing my master's degree I was referred to and read and that is Small is Beautiful. It's a book by E. F. Schumacher. He entitled it Small is Beautiful: Economics as if People Mattered. I love that part because if people matter in what we do, then we generally respect the social dimension of things and the environmental and the financial aspects of what we do. Within that book, he talks about the use of natural resources and how we actually value those things, along with how people contribute negatively or positively to those things. What reminded me a bit of it was, I was actually at a conference on putting people into sustainability in London last week. What I thought was quite an interesting point: on the balance sheet, a robot is seen as an asset, but on the balance sheet, a person or people are seen as costs. That seems a bit strange that people are seen as a negative and a robot is seen as a positive. Looking at how we put people into sustainability discussion is a very important thing. And hence, I like that book. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? There's lots on the internet that you can use, but I get most of my inspiration from other companies and other people and listening to what they're doing. I think networking and that respect is probably the most beneficial way of actually being challenged and seeing how we can do things better. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work being done at Jabil? The best thing is to go to our sustainability pages on our website. You'll see we have some great resources there. We've got some blocks from my team and other members on circular economy, on how to create a strategy for carbon reduction. We really would like some feedback on that and to see if other people are finding the same challenges, and also, I think our solutions may be helpful.

Good Morning, Colorado, you’re listening to the Daily Sun-Up. It’s Wednesday April 28th, and even though there’s a lot of turmoil right now we’re feeling lucky to start the day with you. Today - Colorado’s Air Pollution Control Division has been accused of prioritizing industry over public health. Now whistleblowers are accusing the director of having a conflict of interest. But before we begin, let’s go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett’s book “Colorado Day by Day”: Today, we take you back to April 28th, 1873 when President Ulysses S Grant made an unexpected visit to Colorado Territory. He was the first president of the United States to stand on Colorado soil, and the first to look upon the Rocky Mountains. He took the Colorado Central Railroad and upon his arrival in Denver he was greeted by hundreds of guests including a party of Utes. Now, our feature story. Colorado’s Air Pollution Control Division is under fire, accused of prioritizing industry over environment and public health. Now whistleblowers are saying Director Garry Kaufman has direct conflict of interest in issuing pollution exemptions to one of the largest mining companies in the world. Reporter Michael Booth shares the latest with Lucy Haggard. To read more about the whistleblower complaints, go to coloradosun.com. And Before we go, here are a few stories that you should know about today: Coronavirus case rates and hospitalizations are continuing to increase across Colorado, especially among younger people. Data from the state health department shows cases are occurring at a higher rate among children age 11 to 17 than the general adult population. State health officials urge people to get vaccinated, especially now that all the community vaccination sites are accepting walk-in patients. Children under the age of 16 are not eligible for vaccines, though experts hope there will be options for youth to get vaccinated before the next school year starts in the fall. https://coloradosun.com/2021/04/27/coronavirus-cases-hospitalizations-rise-colorado-under-18/ Colorado Democrats are pursuing a bill in the statehouse to ensure people don’t stay in jail longer than necessary after they are arrested. House Bill 1280 would require courts hold a bond hearing within 48 hours of someone being arrested and booked into jail. The bill would also allow hearings to be held by phone or video conference, and would require judicial districts to let people pay bail online. Proponents of the bill argue it ensures everyone receives due process efficiently, as someone arrested on a Friday under current law may have to wait until Monday or Tuesday for their bond hearing. But critics say the bill doesn’t include funding for the changes. And they say the work will drain money from rural law enforcement agencies that already struggle for adequate resources. Commercial rafting dropped 21% in Colorado last year compared with 2019, according to a new report from the Colorado River Outfitters Association. That translated to roughly $36 million less spent as the coronavirus pandemic’s restrictions throttled the activity. Many businesses also reported increased costs due to disease prevention measures, such as increased cleaning and running more rafts to keep groups distanced. But reservations for the coming season are pouring in as more people get vaccinated and coronavirus restrictions are eased, giving outfitters hope for a comfortable rebound this year. During its regular quarterly meeting April 23, the Virginia State Air Pollution Control Board unanimously approved a final regulation prohibiting the use of certain hydrofluorocarbons in specific uses. Approved by the Board following Virginia Department of Environmental Quality staff recommendations, public comment and discussion, the regulation will become effective June 1. The production and use of HFCs in the Commonwealth of Virginia, in most applications, must be discontinued by Jan. 1, 2022. HFCs are used in the manufacture of some foam products, aerosols, refrigerants, aerosols and fire extinguishers, and can have a significant impact on global warming in part due...Article LinkSupport the show (http://henricocitizen.com/contribute)

Good Morning, Colorado, you’re listening to the Daily Sun-Up. It’s Wednesday March 31st, and even though there’s a lot of turmoil right now we’re feeling lucky to start the day with you. Colorado air pollution control managers allegedly ordered staff to ignore federal laws and speed up permits. Today - what the whistleblowers are saying. But before we begin, let’s go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett’s book “Colorado Day by Day”: Today, we take you back to March 31st, 1933 when Governor Edwin C Johnson signed legislation that changed the way Colorado carried out the death penalty for inmates sentenced to capital punishment. The law called for a suitable and efficient room or place, enclosed from public view. It also required the administration of lethal gas instead of hanging - the previous method. Now, our feature story. A complaint filed Tuesday with the EPA alleges Colorado air pollution control managers ordered staff to ignore federal laws and speed up permits at all costs. The three whistleblowers, all employees inside the Air Pollution Control Division, say the unlawful actions have gone on for years, and impact the health of Coloradans. Reporter Michael Booth shares more with Lucy Haggard. To read more about air pollution and monitoring, go to coloradosun.com. And Before we go, here are a few stories that you should know about today: Boulder Police Officer Eric Talley, the last of the ten killed at a King Soopers last week, was publicly memorialized in Lafayette on Tuesday. Hundreds of law enforcement officers and relatives attended the service, with many more tuning in to a livestream. Talley was remembered as a practical joker, a family man and a hero whose last actions may have helped save dozens of lives. https://coloradosun.com/2021/03/30/eric-talley-memorial-service-boulder-shooting/ A new proposal argues foster children should be allowed to return to Colorado’s system even after emancipating themselves. Current law allows youth to stay in the system until they are 21 years old, but many choose to leave once they turn 18. Once they leave, they can’t go back, and many find the transition to be difficult. The proposal from Colorado’s child welfare division would make permanent a federal rule change, brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, that allows emancipated foster youth to return and receive additional support until they are 21. Colorado is poised to give some sex assault victims unlimited time to sue their abusers. Senate Bill 73 is awaiting Governor Jared Polis’ signature after the bipartisan measure cleared the statehouse Tuesday. The bill would phase out the countdown for child sex abuse victims to file civil suits. Current law requires them to file suit within six years after turning 18 years old. For criminal cases, there is no statute of limitations for child sex assault in Colorado. https://coloradosun.com/2021/03/30/colorado-sexual-assault-statute-of-limitations-change/ For more information on all of these stories, visit our website, www.coloradosun.com.
