When we think about climate action, it's easy to focus on what's happening in our own backyard. But the reality is, decisions made in big economies - especially in the US - have a huge impact on the rest of the world. With Donald Trump back for a second term as President of the United States of America, what does that mean for the environment? What policies could shift, and how might that affect global efforts to tackle the climate crisis? To help us make sense of it all, we speak to Rob Dietz, Program Director at the Post Carbon Institute. Rob, who is also the lead author of the bestselling book ‘Enough Is Enough: Building a Sustainable Economy in a World of Finite Resources' will share how these policies could shape the future, why it matters even for people outside the US, and what we can do to keep pushing for a more sustainable world.Image Credit: ShutterstockSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of Bionic Planet, Season 10, Episode 115, we dive into the significant environmental implications of the executive orders signed by President Donald Trump on his first day in office. Originally, we had planned to focus this season on Africa, but the rapid changes in U.S. environmental policy prompted us to shift gears. I connected with Tim Male last week. Tim, who founded the Environmental Policy Innovation Center in 2017, has a wealth of experience in environmental policy, having worked in various capacities, including at the White House and with organizations like Defenders of Wildlife. Both Tim and I share a commitment to addressing climate challenges, despite our differing perspectives on party policies. In our discussion, we unpack Tim's recent LinkedIn post, where he meticulously breaks down the ten executive actions that target environmental regulations. We explore the unprecedented number of executive orders issued in such a short time frame and the potential consequences of these actions. Tim emphasizes that while executive orders can set priorities for federal agencies, they must still align with existing laws, which can lead to legal challenges. We delve into specific orders, starting with the requirement for the "God squad" under the Endangered Species Act to meet more frequently and expedite reviews of projects that could impact endangered species. Tim explains the historical context of this committee and its potential to prioritize development over environmental protections. Next, we discuss directives to the Army Corps of Engineers to expedite permitting processes under the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act, raising concerns about the implications for environmental safeguards. Tim provides insights into the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and its role in ensuring that federal actions minimize environmental harm. We also examine the revocation of President Carter's executive order aimed at making environmental impact statements more accessible to the public, which Tim argues could lead to confusion and inconsistency across federal agencies. The episode continues with a discussion on the rescinding of protections for ancient forests and the withdrawal from international efforts to combat deforestation. Tim highlights the significance of ecosystem service valuation and the potential loss of guidance that could have helped quantify the benefits of environmental services. We touch on the broader implications of these actions, including the potential for increased energy production at the expense of environmental protections. As we wrap up, we reflect on the long-term consequences of these executive orders and the potential for legal challenges. Tim expresses concern about the sweeping nature of these actions and the message they send to communities affected by energy projects. This episode serves as a critical examination of the intersection between politics and environmental policy, providing listeners with a deeper understanding of the current landscape and the challenges ahead in the fight against climate change. Project 2025: The Ominous Specter

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 11, 2024 3:54

Project 2025 has emerged as a significant blueprint developed by the Heritage Foundation, a well-known ultra-conservative think tank. The initiative is designed with an eye toward influencing environmental and energy policies for a potential second term of Donald Trump's presidency. By targeting regulatory reform and redefining federal involvement in green initiatives, Project 2025 seeks to dramatically shift current environmental policies. The Heritage Foundation, already a potent force in conservative policymaking circles, has devised Project 2025 as a roadmap to roll back various green policies implemented under previous administrations. This has been met with significant controversy given the increasing urgency of addressing climate change globally. The blueprint has sparked discussions and concerns about the future of clean energy initiatives and the U.S.'s role in global environmental leadership.Recently, Project 2025 drew international attention when it hosted an anti-green event bringing together allies of former President Donald Trump and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. This gathering highlighted the transnational connections among right-wing figures in the U.S. and Europe and their shared skepticism toward aggressive environmental regulations. The event underscored Project 2025's potential influence not only domestically but also internationally, as it sought to unify conservative leaders around a common agenda against stringent environmental controls.Key aspects of Project 2025 include revisiting regulatory policies that are perceived by its proponents as overly restrictive to economic growth and national sovereignty. By reassessing the regulatory frameworks that govern emissions, energy production, and land use, the project advocates for a free-market approach to energy and environmental policy. This approach contrasts sharply with current global trends that emphasize sustainability and environmental conservation.Critics of Project 2025 argue that its implementation would be a regressive step in the fight against climate change. Environmental advocacy groups warn that the dismantling of existing regulations could lead to increased carbon emissions and environmental degradation. They stress the importance of accelerating efforts to transition towards renewable energy sources, emphasizing that such changes are crucial for meeting international climate goals and ensuring a sustainable future. The implications of Project 2025 are far-reaching. Should it gain traction and influence future U.S. policy, it could signal a significant shift in how the nation approaches climate and energy issues. The discussions surrounding this initiative highlight a broader ideological battle over how best to balance economic growth with environmental stewardship. As the dialogue continues around Project 2025 and its potential impact, it represents a critical juncture in the intersection of politics, policy, and environmental science. The controversy surrounding its proposals serves as a reminder of the deep divides that characterize the global conversation on climate change and energy policy. The future of Project 2025 and the policies it champions will undoubtedly shape the trajectory of U.S. environmental policy in the coming years, with ramifications that could extend beyond national borders.

In this thought-provoking interview, Xander Dunlap argues that current environmental policies and "green" technologies are perpetuating ecological destruction under the guise of sustainability. He contends that solutions like solar and wind energy are wedded to capitalism and leading to increased mining, extractivism, and social control. Dunlap calls for a fundamental rethinking of how we live, advocating for grassroots movements to create more liberated, self-sufficient communities that work in harmony with local ecosystems. He emphasizes the importance of acting locally while resisting the forces of industrial modernity. Throughout the interview, Dunlap provides a powerful critique of corporate greenwashing and state-driven false solutions to the environmental crisis. Dr. Xander Dunlap is a research fellow at the Institute of Global Sustainability, Boston University. Alexander has examined the political ecology of low-carbon technologies, extractive development and police-military transformations in Mexico, Germany, Peru, France, Spain & Portugal. When we say, “Money cannot buy conscience”, in today's economy, we could not be further from the truth. Our current economy can turn absolutely anything into financial assets. Even irresponsible behaviour. A company that is incapable of reducing its carbon emission can just buy carbon credits and continue business-as-usual. Another that is about to ruin a habitat can offset its wrongdoing by paying money to someone else to save another habitat somewhere else. While these solutions may make bad behaviour slightly more costly, they do not stop them. Moreover, they contribute significantly to neocolonialism. Today's guest, Frederic Hache explains us how these nature markets work and how they turn environmental policies into gambling casinos.

All over the world, there are 91 Green Parties that believe in committing our governments to environmental stewardship, through electing green movement leaders into office. In Asia, Taiwan is home to the region's oldest Green Party, which won a National Assembly seat in 1996 - their very first election campaign.  Our guest today is Professor Dafydd Fell, a political scientist at SOAS University of London, and Director of the Centre of Taiwan Studies. Dafydd Fell is author of the new book: “Taiwan's Green Parties: Alternative Politics in Taiwan”, published in March 2021 by Routledge. Today on Sojourner Truth: For our weekly Earth Watch, Tom Goldtooth, executive director of the Indigenous Environmental Network, joins us to discuss the impact of Indigenous-led protests against the Keystone XL pipeline. Now, Biden has announced that he is revoking a key permit for the pipeline. The massive protests at Standing Rock against the pipeline brought national and international attention to the issue, and Biden's announcement is seen as a victory. But, is Biden's announcement enough? What more is needed? Also, reaction to Biden's other environmental executive orders and plans. Also, the latest on the second impeachment of Donald Trump, as Republicans indicate they will not convict him. They also make the claim that the trial is "unconstitutional." Are there any options left for Democrats to hold Trump accountable for the January 6 invasion of the U.S. Capitol? Our guest is Marjorie Cohn, professor emerita at Thomas Jefferson School of Law, where she taught for 25 years. The former president of the National Lawyers Guild and criminal defense attorney is a legal scholar and political analyst who writes books and articles, and lectures throughout the world about human rights, US foreign policy, and the contradiction between the two. Grassroots activist organizations are now being targeted by social media networks as part of the blow back of the January 6 Capitol invasion. Our guest is Sharon Black, an organizer with both the Peoples Power Assembly, based in Baltimore and with Struggle La Lucha/Mujeres En Lucha, a national women's group.

Abraham Litwin-Logan is one of the hosts of the Pseudointellectuals podcast. We discussed policies that we believe would make the most substantial impact in fighting climate change while also serving the economy. Policies were discussed through the lens of many different approaches to climate policy including emissions reductions, transitioning to green energy and last-resort heat reduction. Much of this was discussed from the perspective of libertarian conservatism. Later, we discuss the current state of climate activism and whether or not it is effective. Recorded on June 11, 2020.

IFE Distinguished Visitor Lecture - recorded 5 June 2019 at QUT. The effective implementation of environmental policies has a huge impact on the conservation of biodiversity. However, policies can change according to the socio-economic and political situation. Brazil is facing an important political transition that could impair environmental policies, affecting biodiverse regions with negative impacts around the world. This Distinguished Visitor Lecture provides a critical evaluation of Brazilian environmental policies (how good they were), and discusses future political scenarios (how bad they could be). A particular emphasis will be given to the new Brazilian Forest Code, the main law that protects native vegetation on private properties.
