The Chicago Marathon is one of six World Major Marathons, and this year will host around 50,000 runners from around the world, not to mention the spectators, vendors, and volunteers. So, is it possible for an event of this magnitude to be sustainable? On this episode, Casey and Sara chat with Cat Morris, the Sustainability Manager at Chicago Event Management, overseeing the Chicago Marathon. Hear about how the Chicago Marathon became certified as an Evergreen Inspire event through the Council for Responsible Sport, how waste, from water cups to gel packets, is being diverted from landfills, and how runners and spectators can get involved!   Sara will be running the 2024 Chicago Marathon as part of Team Fox, raising funds for the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. If you'd like to donate to support the Foundation's work to find a cure for Parkinson's, you can donate through Sara's fundraising page here: https://give.michaeljfox.org/fundraiser/5270913   Resources for this episode:  Chicago Marathon Sustainability Community Impact through Compost: Chicago Distance Series Instagram: Tina Muir, Chicago Marathon Sustainability Ambassador Instagram: Chicago Marathon Know Before You Go: Sustainability

The biggest topic this week - What is the correct utensil to eat mac and cheese with? Because kelly is totally eating as we record, and is remorsefully using a spoon to eat hers. The DNS runners actually got to run together this week, meeting up on the 4th of july for a group run hosted by Katie's run coach, Ken (find him on instagram at @Givin_it_a_Tri), and Kelly and Katie brought the kids along for the fun! Kelly slacked on weekend running as a result of family travel, so her week of training wound up being a little light, but Katie and Mike chime in with their successful weekend long runs, and Mike even survived a solo track session when Kelly bailed on an early morning. Katie participated in a special event with Team Fox, an organization that raises money for parkinson's research. We discuss the magical properties of the potato as we cover this week's medical issues - should we start selling pet potatoes? Let us know. We close out the episode with playing "roses and thorns," and each picking a running song of the week. Jimmy was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson's disease at age 27. At first, Jimmy went into denial and "did nothing" for several years to manage his symptoms. By 2010, he walked with a cane and he hit rock-bottom when he fell down a full flight of stairs while carrying his young son. While both were physically unharmed, the fall became a catalyst for Jimmy to take back control and engage with his treatment and the PD community.Since then, Jimmy has participated in multiple clinical trials to further research for better treatments and hopefully a cure for PD. Physical therapy led him to running and other activities that help him physically and mentally. He joined Team Fox in 2012, and ran in his first marathon that year -- and he hasn't stopped since. In July 2017, he took on a new challenge and competed on NBC's “American Ninja Warrior” to show the world that Parkinson's will not stop him.Jimmy maintains a very active lifestyle, having competed in over 100 half marathons, 15 full marathons, one ultra-marathon, six Grand Fondo rides, multiple Spartan Races and countless 5K and 10K runs. To date, he has raised more than $240,000 for Parkinson's research with Team Fox... and counting. He looks forward to helping educate others about Parkinson's and the role exercise and other lifestyle adjustments can play in treatment.

Meet the incredible Joe Drake. Like Shalane, Joe, at age 60, crossed the NYC Marathon finish line after completing his fifth World Marathon Major (plus a virtual Tokyo) in seven weeks. Joe decided to pursue this goal because (not in spite of) of his Parkinson's Disease. Joe shares how his diagnosis in 2018 transformed him from an “everyday runner” to a marathoner and a Boston Qualifier. After all of the World Marathon Majors (minus Tokyo which was virtual) were scheduled for the fall of 2021 (thanks, Covid), Joe decided to tackle the challenge of running all six races in seven weeks. "My whole life, I didn't think I was funny or anything. So when people say that, or when they say I inspire them, my brain is immediately like, 'No, no you don't, don't listen, they're lying!' The New York City Marathon completely changed that for me. Meeting people in person for the first time…it really made it real for me." She's baaaaack — and this time, she's a New York City Marathoner! Erin Azar — best known online as Mrs. Space Cadet — became a viral sensation when she started running after having her third child, documenting the process for her TikTok and YouTube fans. Erin was on the Ali on the Run Show in February talking about her rise to internet superstardom. Now, she returns to the show as an official New York City Marathoner. On this episode, Erin shares all the details from her New York City experience, from the pre-race adventures on foot to the journey to the start line, and every meaningful step in between the Verrazzano Bridge and the finish line. Along the way, Erin raised more than $76,000 for Team Fox, which supports Parkinson's disease research — a cause close to Erin's heart, since her dad lives with Parkinson's. Erin Azar is a Tik Tok star with nearly 700,000 followers! But she is perhaps an unlikely social media celebrity.  She's not a fast runner.  She doesn't have perfect abs, a spotless kitchen or that one secret trick to whatever. She's a mom of 3 from rural Pennsylvania who started running a couple of years ago, after the birth of her third child.   Just a mile a day she thought, as she started documenting her journey on YouTube and then Tik Tok. At the time, she was just looking for a community of others like her to share the journey with. But something about her posts struck a chord, and her videos "blew up" (as the kids say) to millions of views and hundreds of thousands of followers. Erin is a breath of fresh air, exactly what the running community-- and social media needs these days. Special thanks to my friend Kim at AfterShokz for introducing me to Erin.  Kim and her sister, Christy are running the NYC Marathon for Team Fox.  When they told this to Erin, Erin wanted to join to because her father has Parkinson's. In just the last 2 weeks, Erin has already raised over $40,000 for Team Fox.  And she's not slowing down! Huge thanks to Erin for supporting Team Fox, and for taking the time to share her story and insights with us.   #EveryMileMatters!

He is an extraordinary human being who managed to step out of an 8 year battle through darkness and mental struggle about a diagnosis that would forever change his life. To say that he is one of a kind would be an understatement. He works hard everyday to outpace his current self and that is the most important thing that any of us can do. This is not just about Parkinson's. At the end of this hour, you will be inspired and you will go about your day looking out for yourself and wanting to go beyond your comfort zone and overcome your own obstacles.  I'd love to know what you think. Choi was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease at the age of 27, and has since become an active advocate for the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Since then, Jimmy has participated in multiple clinical trials to further research for better treatments and hopefully a cure for PD. Physical therapy led him to running and other activities that help him physically and mentally. He joined Team Fox in 2012, and ran in his first marathon that year -- and he hasn't stopped since. In July 2017, he took on a new challenge and competed on NBC's “American Ninja Warrior” to show the world that Parkinson's will not stop him. Jimmy maintains a very active lifestyle, having competed in over 100 half marathons, 15 full marathons, one ultra-marathon, six Grand Fondo rides, multiple Spartan Races and countless 5K and 10K runs. Pharmaceutical executive Peter A. DiBiaso, MHA, a triathlete who has successfully completed the grueling Ironman, learned at age 49 he had early-onset Parkinson’s disease. He shares his experiences—and triumphs—in this episode. What started as a small tremor in his right hand and a stiffness in his right ankle ended up changing his life. It was a blow, but he knew what to do: The diagnosis brought his personal and professional life full circle. Five years later, he reports minimal disease progression. He is doing well and remains incredibly active. Other than well-managed medication, to what does he attribute his success so far?Staying fit and continuing to be an athlete. He is still running marathons and recently scaled Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.Engaging with patient advocacy groups—in particular, the Michael J. Fox Foundation. (In fact, his Kilimanjaro trek was part of a Team Fox effort to raise money for the foundation.)His ability to navigate the system. He has also been involved in six clinical trials—both interventional and observational. He knew the value as an industry insider. Now, he appreciates the value from the patient perspective—and he better understands the frustrations patients face. It too often falls on the patients to initiate discussions about clinical trials. That’s fine for him, he says, but what about those who don’t know trials are available? His professional life has focused on patient recruitment issues, so he brings a 360-degree perspective. Sponsors, he says, need to focus on more than the academic and clinical elements; they must address real-world issues and trial participants’ challenges—even those that seem minor, like parking. It comes down to patient-centricity, he explains—putting patients at the center of the clinical research enterprise. It is becoming more common, but there’s still a long way to go.Peter DiBiaso, MHA, is a consultant to drug development companies and has worked at Pfizer, Shire, Vertex, and IQVIA. He is married and has two children, and he and his family split their time between Paris and Boston.

This is a special bonus episode of When Life Gives You Parkinson’s which we are calling “Extra Dosage.” Full episodes of Season 2 of the podcast will be released every other Wednesday beginning in September 2019.   If you were to imagine Michael J. Fox in your mind right now. You probably are picturing the guy from Back to the Future or The Good Wife. Think about when you’ve seen him interviewed on TVnews programs or when he testified before congress. Those uncontrolled, involuntary movements Michael J. Fox is known for are not symptoms of Parkinson’s. It’s called dyskinesia. It’s a reaction to long-term levodopa use. Yes, the gold standard drug treatment for Parkinson’s, when taken over a long period of time, will effectively treat some of your PD symptoms like tremor, slowness and stiffness, but cause you to move uncontrollably. The Michael J. Fox Foundation describes it as fidgeting, writhing, wriggling, head bobbing or body swaying. It is important to note that not everyone with Parkinson’s will develop this complication. It is more common with people who are diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease (YOPD) or under the age of 50. There was no guarantee I would experience dyskinesia. I didn’t particularly want it. And in the end, I didn’t really have a vote.    After my family returned from World Parkinson Congress in Japan in mid-June, I was jet lagged and my med times and dosages were a bit out of whack. That’s when dyskinesia took hold. It had only ever really happened once before. About six months ago. I do sometimes sway and jerk a bit here and there, but I am a relative stranger to experiencing a full-on, dyskinesia episode.    It was Saturday night, my family was at the dinner table and I started to sway and rock. Slowly at first and then gradually faster and more erratic. My head started to go to the right, my shoulder popped to the left, my neck jerked back and forth. And it repeated over and over again.   About 5 minutes into the dyskinesia, I asked my wife Rebecca to record a video. The dyskinesia lasted 45 minutes. I posted the video on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. For friends and family who’ve not witnessed many physical symptoms of my Parkinson’s, this came as a shock. For people familiar with PD, my episode was rather mild. Two days later, I was at a manager’s off-site meeting with 18 of my colleagues and dyskinesia set in again. It lasted an hour. And then it happened a day later during my exercise class. I was doing a bear crawl and it was as if the bear was drunk. I couldn’t tell my feel what to do anymore. It lasted 30 minutes.       In this Extra Dosage episode, I turn to friends and fellow people with Parkinson’s who’ve been dealing with dyskinesia longer than I have. Becca Miller, 45, is a psychologist at a community mental health center in New Haven, Connecticut. She was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease six years ago. She began to have dyskinesia two years ago.  Jim Smerdon, 45, has been living in Vancouver, B.C., with Parkinson’s since 2007. His dyskinesia was so severe he opted for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery in 2014 in search of relief. I wanted to get them to answer some questions I had about dyskinesia and some that my friends and family posed to me after watching the video. Also in this Extra Dosage episode, the Michael J. Fox Foundation (MJFF) has announced a series of free, daylong, live events called “Parkinson’s IQ + You.” MJFF Deputy CEO Sohini Chowdhury joined the podcast to chat about it, “the goal is to create a forum where we can share information with Parkinson’s patients, family members, friends, all with the goal of empowering people with Parkinson’s and care  partners so they can optimally manage their disease and learn more about participating in research.” The “Parkinson’s IQ + You” series exciting for a number of reasons, but most relevant to me is that I have been asked to travel with the Michael J. Fox Foundation and be the host and moderator of these events across America. You can get more information at www.michaeljfox.org/PDIQ. There are other events I will be attending in the coming months that were mentioned in this episode. Jimmy Choi is a motivational speaker, an advocate for Parkinson’s research, an ultra-endurance athlete, a Parkinson’s patient, and a 2-time American Ninja Warrior. But most importantly he’s a father of two, a devoted husband, and a friend to many. Jimmy was diagnosed with young onset Parkinson’s at the age of 27 (in 2003), and for the first 8 months he lived in complete denial. So much so, in fact, that he didn’t even tell his wife for months. He spent the next several years of his life ignoring the problem hoping a single pill would make his disease go away, and at one point he gained over 70 pounds, topping out at a whopping 240 pounds. Then one day a single event changed Jimmy’s life forever, and ultimately the lives of thousands of people along with it. On that day when Jimmy literally hit rock bottom, he decided something needed to change. And since that moment he has transformed from an obese person with Parkinson’s disease who could barely walk (even with a cane) without repeatedly falling over to a decorated ultra-endurance athlete, obstacle racer, and ninja warrior. Jimmy’s secret is incredibly simple: His only goal is to be ‘Better than yesterday.’ And in this episode you’re going to learn the mindsets and tools that Jimmy uses every single day to make incredible progress despite what should be a debilitating disease. One day while carrying his infant son, they both fell a full flight of stairs which triggered fear of the future and fear for his family. Today on The Neil Haley Show, The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview American Ninja Warrior Host Akbar Gbajabiamila of Parkour 4 Parkinson's. The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (MJFF) announces “Parkour 4 Parkinson's,” a first-time Team Fox event organized by “American Ninja Warrior” Host and Foundation Board member Akbar Gbajabiamila. Combining the camaraderie and can-do spirit of both the Ninja Warrior and Team Fox communities nationwide, “Parkour 4 Parkinson's” will be held in Thousand Oaks, California, on Sunday, August 5, and aims to raise $350,000 to support critical Parkinson's disease (PD) research. Tickets are available now at www.teamfox.org/akbar. Gbajabiamila, who joined the Board of Directors of The Michael J. Fox Foundation in March, is an NFL alum, sports commentator and entertainment personality who currently hosts NBC's Emmy-nominated “American Ninja Warrior” (ANW). As the son of a father diagnosed with Parkinson's two decades ago, Gbajabiamila was riveted when he saw Jimmy Choi, a 41-year-old Chicago resident living with Parkinson's, run the ANW course in summer 2017. The two became fast friends, and as “Fox Ninja,” Jimmy has become a crowd favorite of the show, returning for a second buzzer attempt last week in Indianapolis. Inspired, Akbar has committed to use his national Ninja platform to share the impact of his father's own Parkinson's journey — and to rally PD patients and families nationwide to be part of the research.
