Apps before entrees. When McDonald's executives start complaining publicly about fast-food prices, you know things are getting messy. But for every sensational, inflation-era shocker — stop us if you've heard the one about the $18 Big Mac meal or the vintage Taco Bell receipt that ruined the internet's day — there's a good deal waiting to be snagged. And it's already likely downloaded to the phone in your pocket. In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Thursday, Mayor Adams has been indicted by a grand jury on federal criminal charges, according to two people familiar with the matter, an extraordinary culmination to weeks of searches, subpoenas and resignations of top officials that have thrust the city's government into crisis. He's facing mounting calls to resign by local politicians. And, the next acting mayor of New York City — if federally indicted Eric Adams were to step down — would be Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, a lefty Democrat who is often critical of cops and once ran a failed campaign for governor. Elsewhere, A judge dismissed a federal lawsuit challenging a suburban New York ban on wearing masks in public except for health and religious reasons. And fast-moving Hurricane Helene was advancing across the Gulf of Mexico toward Florida, threatening an “unsurvivable” storm surge in northwestern parts of the state as well as damaging winds, rains and flash floods hundreds of miles inland across much of the southeastern U.S., forecasters said.

Thereafter, for nearly a decade, Adams sought and accepted improper valuable benefits, such as luxury international travel, including from wealthy foreign businesspeople and at least one Turkish government official seeking to gain influence over him,” the 57-page indictment charges. While Dismantling Injustice is taking a brief summer break, the Envision Freedom staff is curating a “Staff Picks” series, where we are sharing some of our favorite episodes from this past season. This week our Research & Advocacy, Zoë Adel Perry shares our conversation on the criminalization of mental health—a topic that is, unfortunately, as relevant today as it was when we released this episode in January. Whether it's the police shooting Raul de a Cruz in the Bronx or the vigilante murder of Jordan Neely on the subway, it's clear that violence in response to individuals experiencing mental health crises has been normalized. On this episode, Carl was joined by Jeffrey Severe from the NYC Public Advocate's Office to share Public Advocate Jumaane Williams' concerns with how we deal with mental health as a city and how we support solutions that lead to care and treatment, not violence. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dismantlinginjustice/support

Astorino was in third at 19% and Wilson at 15%. Kathy Hochul scores easy win in NY's Democratic primary for governor Gov. Kathy Hochul cruised to an easy victory in Tuesday's Democratic primary election, setting her up to seek a full term in November after taking office last year when a sexual harassment scandal forced former Gov. Andrew Cuomo to quit in disgrace. Hochul — New York's first female governor — held a 65% to 22% lead over city Public Advocate Jumaane Williams with outgoing US Rep.
