Welcome back to another Metal Debate album review. Today we're reviewing the new album “Dreams Of Lands Unseen” by Ignea. Ignea are a symphonic metal band from Ukraine. The material fits in the general mold of symphonic metal, but Ignea provide enough musical twists and tangents to keep things fresh and not be too derivative. Following the intro instrumental “Téoura”, Dreams of Lands Unseen opens with “Dunes.” The vocal and instrumental melodies are impressive, pulling the listener along and demanding attention. A good mix of power and softness in both the vocals and instrumental execution. We also get some snippets of Ukrainian language included among the otherwise English lyrics, to nice effect. The next song “Camera Obscura” has a synthy intro, will heavy riffs kicking in thereafter relegating the synths to a backing role. Singer Helle Bodenova's voice is soft and flows well prior to the issuance of her growls. We already begin to see here hints of a moderately progressive approach with Ignea's music. The majority of tracks on the album begin with a traditional verse, chorus, verse, chorus, sequence, but then branch out as the songs continue with a variety of conclusions including some abrupt endings. Track 4 - Далекі Обрії (Daleki Obriyi)- reverses the approach of “Camera Obscura” with an initial motor of crunching guitars segueing into keys. We get harsh vox on the verses, and cleans on the choruses, and there's a satisfying if brief keyboard lead break. “To No One I Know” features some tasteful string instrument sounds – whether real or synth I'm not sure. But it brings to mind that Ignea is not the brand of symphonic metal that relies on overwhelming backing orchestrations as with acts such as Xandria or Visions Of Atlantis. Their approach is more measured. “Incurable Disease” has a lot of the old Delain feel to it. It's very cinematic sounding, conjuring spectral images of light and darkeness narrated by beautiful vocals and a lot of ambient backing sound. Next comes “Nomad's Luck” which is one of my top songs on the record. Immaculately crafted, this track ‘works' from beginning to end. I really applaud Ignea for what seems to be the amount of thought they put into these songs. Helle's voice is excellent here, highlighted by some slow but powerful singing toward the song's incredible crescendo ending. “The Golden Shell” has a very east Asian feel to it, especially in the intro. This one casts aside the aggression for passion, eschewing harsh vocals entirely in favor or a soft voice and slow, sustained tempo throughout. This is a good song, just not one of my favs mostly because I don't think it highlights what this band does best. The pentultimate track “Opiumist” is also the longest on the album clocking in at over 7 minutes. It's another of my favorites – just the overall pacing and structure are great. “Opiumist” incorporates even more oriental flavoring in it's execution, as well as an overall trippy feel from. It gets really trippy about 4 ½ minutes in, than following that interlude goes into about two minutes of straightforward death metal. Kind of a weird song, to be honest, but for me it definitely works. The album concludes with “Zénith.” This track didn't work for me - the bouncey main guitar riff I just fine so cringeworthy as to be unlistenable. Give it a chance yourself and perhaps your aesthetic sensibilities will find it more acceptable than I do. What I have for this album is mostly praise. Dreams Of Lands Unseen is a solid metal album that I would recommend highly to anyone. I'm giving it a nine out of ten – and that's something given I really didn't like one of the tracks. Fans of symphonic metal, melodic death metal, and melodic metal generally should check out Ignea – you won't be disappointed.

The Great Metal Debate podcast is back with the debut self-titled album from Catalyst Crime. Catalyst Crime describe themselves as cinematic symphonic metal; however, I'm not a huge fan of the ‘cinematic' descriptor, as I'm not clear on what that word is trying to communicate. Maybe epic metal, orchestral metal, even soundscape metal, but the term cinematic is literally about the visual scope, so it's a head scratcher for me. I digress. Catalyst Crime has assembled an impressive group of musicians for the recording of this album composed of vocalist Zoe Marie Federoff formerly of Insatia, Jonah Weingarten from Pyramaze on keys, drummer Gerit Lamm of Xandria, guitarists Christopher Zoupa and Kaelen Sarakinis, as well as bassist Matt Federoff. The project is produced by Alex Krull of Leaves' Eyes and the underrated death metal band Atrocity. The album begins with a lengthy instrumental/orchestral intro track, and which segues into the first proper song “Projection Of My Mind.” Sandwhiched between a soft intro and outro the band delivers plenty of snappy power metal vibe on this one. Plenty of color and tempo here giving the listener a real feel for what is to come. The second track, and first single off the album, is “Condemn Me To Chaos”. While I would nit-pick with some elements of this song, the melody line is so incredibly strong as to overwhelm any shortcomings that might be present. Very memorable and ear-wormy, but not in a lame, pop-sensibility way. You‘ll definitely find yourself singing along to this one! Catalyst Crime's brand of symphonic metal is very heavy on keyboards, much more so than the background orchestration, and includes even some key lead breaks of which I am a huge fan. More of this metal bands, please! I'm also a fan of Zoe Marie Federoff's vocals, which I was familiar with from her previous band Insatia. She has her own unique sound that admittedly may take some listeners a while to acclimate to. There‘s a touch of dissonant pitch to her voice that is different but strangely compelling. In addition to an array of clean classical and rock singing styles she employs, Zoe forrays into harsh vocals on a number of songs, at times evincing almost a black metal shriek. Moving in no real order through the rest of the tracklist, “Congitive Dissonance“ has a spooky, Tim-Burtonesque feel (and okay - I realize here maybe there is something to the cinematic metal tag) as well as a beautiful trade-off between the complementary male and female vocals. Toward the album end “Not Even Once“ is definitely a winning track with moderate pacing and a bit different sound a vocal delivery. I could see this one being even better live than on record. There‘s plenty of good tracks and I‘m definitely not going to do them all justice here. “Break Even” is a solid, uptempo song featuring an epic chorus and really cool guitar riffs. As or more aggressive is “Without Anesthesia” - perhaps my favorite track on the entire album. The chorus presents a cacophony of sounds; it's kinda sonically cluttered and maybe not even that well-composed, but perhaps the imperfection makes it beautiful to me. I loved it. There's just one real ballad in the mix - “Chasing the Ghost” - which I found enthralling with a beautiful interplay between the guitar and piano. The song “Twice Upon A Time” is also somewhat ballad-ish, having a slower tempo but also really well developed building of sound and contrast between the instruments. The debut self-titled album from Catalyst Crime is available from October 22 from Massacre Records in CD Digipak as well as digital formats.

A review of the debut album from North American symphonic metal act Everdawn entitled ‘Cleopatra'. Everdawn isn't an entirely new band, but a reconstituted version of a previous act Midnight Eternal. The musician you're most likely to recognize from Everdawn – and a key additional in the changed lineup from Midnight Eternal – is bassist Mike LePond who many might know from Symphony X, also Ross The Boss band, Death Dealer, and many other projects. He brings a steady, veteran presence to this new incarnation of the band. Another fresh face in the lineup is vocalist Alina Gavrilenko, who also goes by the moniker Alina Snowmaiden, taking the vocal duties in place of Midnight Eternal singer Raine Hilai. To my ears, and one of the big differences with this new Everdawn release for those who heard Midnight Eternal's album, is that Raine's voice was a bit more Liv Kristine-esque, while Alina's vocals bring a bit less sweetness and more muscle. Now, in terms of what Everdawn offers on ‘Cleopatra', the listener can expect fairly straightforward European-style symphonic power metal. There's more emphasis on the power here than the symphonic style, and you won't find any massive backing orchestrations along the lines of Xandria or Sirenia. As far as the singing, its mostly operatic soprano female vocals occasionally bonded with clean male singing. No growls in this one. Listening through this album about a half dozen times, I come away generally impressed. There is something different and interesting in each song. While they don't get very progressive stylistically – mostly adherering to clear verse-chorus structure – they still mix it up and surprise on occasion. I'll say I found the second half of the album was somewhat stronger than the first. Looking at that first half: the rocking, up tempo intro “Ghost Shadow Requium” was decent but let off the gas too much and might have been better placed mid-track list. Both the title track “Cleopatra” and “Your Majesty Sadness” had the band going for a big sound. I do give points for effort here, and truly did enjoy both songs – but I'm not sure they quite nailed it with the choruses on each being a bit of a let down. “Stranded In Baglore” – which I believe is the first single released off the album, is a decent, catchy track. I could see this being one I'd enjoy more live than on record. But as I moved further into the album I found more to appreciate, or maybe their approach just grew on me. “Infinity Divine” has maybe the best vocal melody on the record building to a great crecendo – echos of Tarja Turunan – really excellently done. “Rider Of The Storm” and “Lucid Dream” both show the guitars attacking with even heavier riffage and more solid operatic highs from Alina, plus some nice keyboard work. The song “Heart Of A Lion” is the most anthemic track and could be right off a Leaves' Eyes album. And then there's Toledo 712 AD, which is entirely instrumental! Easily the heaviest song and a sterling headbanger. Looking back over the entire tracklist I'm not knocking the earlier album songs, but those later on the agenda seem to come with an overall more ‘metal' feel. The party really develops the further you listen in to this one. So, how do I rate this album ‘Cleopatra'. Well, as far as debuts go, this is pretty strong; give em three points for that. Delivering solid symphonic power metal based out of North America – where the genre needs more representation - earns them five more points. The first half of the album wasn't as strong as it could've been – minus a point, but the second half more than made up for it – plus two points. Total it up and that's 9 out of ten for Cleopatra. It's early so far, but so far ‘Cleopatra' is my fav album of 2021! Listening to this release really I'm very much looking forward to hearing more from the Everdawn and perhaps the opportunity to see them live in the future.
