Escuchar audio

Raquel has a background in engineering and she used her experience working with Bay Area tech companies to springboard her journey into entrepreneurship. In this conversation, she breaks down how apparel patterns are made and why previous methods for creating plus-size apparel didn't work. She also discusses the important role that mentors, peers and her time in accelerator programs have played in keeping her going through turbulent times.

In today's special episode, Rachel is thrilled to welcome back the trailblazer in size-inclusivity, Raquel Vélez! As we reflect on the ever-evolving fashion landscape, Raquel's insights into the shift from body positivity to body neutrality are not only timely but revolutionary. She eloquently dissects the sensitive nature of industry jargon, advocating for language that uplifts without alienating. Our conversation is a masterclass in thoughtfulness, as we explore the profound implications of embracing our bodies for their strength and ability, rather than their physical form. Raquel's return shines a spotlight on the essential need for mindful communication, ensuring that every individual feels seen and cherished in the world of fashion. This episode isn't just a discussion; it's a journey through the complex narrative of clothing sizes and the unique hurdles faced by the plus-size market. Together, we confront the myths that shroud clothing tags, stressing that comfort and confidence should always eclipse the arbitrary numbers that dictate size. We tackle the quandaries of vanity sizing and the elusive concept of "true to size" in a world where variety in body shape demands diverse sizing options. We delve into the challenging terrain of sustainable plus-size fashion, addressing consumer reservation, market misconceptions, and the ethical conundrum of crafting affordable yet ethical apparel.  Raquel Vélez is the Founder and CEO of Alpine Parrot, an outdoor apparel company whose mission is to celebrate and foster equitable access to the outside for people of size. In a previous life she was a robotics engineer and software engineering manager, but now she spends her time focusing on great fit, finding amazing materials, and building an inclusive community centered around body neutrality, spending time in nature, and finding joy in any environment. She was named one of Outside Magazine's Outsiders of the Year in 2021 and Well+Good Magazine's Changemakers in 2023. To connect with Raquel, you can go to her website: Alpine Parrot   In this episode, you'll hear: -A discussion around sizing terminology and embracing body neutrality, while understanding that everyone is on their own journey. -The importance of education and knowing that what the tag says does not matter. -True-to-size – what does this even mean?? -What happens when brands bring in additional sizes, but don't sell them? -How quality of apparel affects your experience in the activities you're doing.   We can't wait to hear what you think of this episode!   Purchase the Business of Apparel Online Course: https://www.thebusinessofapparel.com/course   Like, comment & subscribe to my channel here:  https://www.youtube.com/@unmarkedstreet/ Learn more at https://www.thebusinessofapparel.com --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Connect with us: https://www.linkedin.com/company/unmarked-street/ https://www.instagram.com/unmarkedstreet/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100076027998346 https://twitter.com/UnmarkedStreet https://www.pinterest.com/unmarkedstreet/

In this episode of the Female Athlete Nutrition podcast, I talk with the founder of Alpine Parrot, an outdoor apparel company for plus size women, Raquel Vélez. Alpine Parrot's mission is to create outdoor clothing that encourages and celebrates underrepresented people in the outdoors, namely people of size and people of color, prioritizing sustainable fashion. Raquel believes every body can look and feel great outside, and we hear how she is using her background in engineering to make this vision come to life. In this episode, Raquel and I talk about the realities of clothing production and sizing, and how she started Alpine Parrot to fill a gap in the market: outdoor clothing that fits different sizes and shapes of body. We discuss the importance of feeling good in what we wear, moving comfortably, and finding apparel that fits you rather than trying to fit your body into clothing based off of an unrealistic fit model. When's the last time you put on a pair of jeans or pants and didn't cringe at the fit? Too tight here. Too loose there. High waisted. Low-riders. And why does a large in one brand fit while a large in another brand wouldn't fit your pre-teen daughter? Clothes shopping, specifically pants shopping, can be a body image landmine - especially in outdoor gear. Raquel Vélez is the Founder and CEO of Alpine Parrot, an outdoor apparel company that caters to bodies size 14 and above and people of color. She's on a mission to help women everywhere find joy in the outdoors instead of fussing about their pants chaffing their thighs or showing off their backside when bending under fallen trees or climbing a trail.  In this interview, you'll hear... How and why Raquel decided to make a career pivot from software engineering to clothing design. Raquel's explanation of why body neutrality and equality should be more important than body positivity in the clothing industry - especially the outdoor industry. The barriers our culture imposes that keep the outdoors from being accessible to all body sizes and what we can do as a collective culture to dismantle those barriers. Raquel explains how the clothing industry designs sizes, why fit can feel "off" the larger the size, and how she designs clothes differently at Alpine Parrot. Finally, Raquel shares what makes the Alpine Parrot hiking pants unique and joy-promoting no matter how you're feeling about your body at the moment. If you've been wanting to try hiking or walking around your block but haven't been able to find comfortable pants to wear, this episode will explain why it's the clothes (and industry), not your body that's the problem. Storytime With Managers is a collection of twenty minute conversations where Jennifer Tu finds answers to questions of interest for both established and budding leaders in technology fields. Episode 3 follows Raquel Vélez (@rockbot on Twitter) in her management journey as she moved from lone-manager-at-tiny-startup to discovering her "first team" of engineering manager peers. Prior to management, Raquel was a JavaScript developer who eventually found her happy place learning to work with systems of people instead of systems of code. We talk about the similarities and differences between small companies and big companies -- the impact of reorganizations, discovering lanes and your first team, managing sideways, securing promotions for your reports -- and how it's still humans all the way down. After a difficult experience finding outdoor clothing that fit well, Raquel did what any normal person would do to solve this problem by starting her own inclusive outdoor clothing company.Raquel Vélez is the CEO and founder of Alpine Parrot, an outdoor clothing company that centers plus size women and women of color. Alpine Parrot is essentially a response to the lack of sizing and diversity in most outdoor brands and celebrates the empowerment and visibility of plus size bodies out in the wild. We'll talk about some of the biggest barriers that exist for people of size in the outdoors as well as ways everyone can work to ensure more equity and access for the broad spectrum of body types that are as diverse and varied as we humans are. This is a special episode for me, and I hope it inspires empathy and offers some perspective into the pervasive and damaging long-term effects of body shaming and exclusionary advertising as well as the potential for real change being helped along by the growing body positivity movement. Here's the story of how Raquel putting her heart and soul into a single pair of pants changed everything.
