There's a lot of nutrition misinformation out there for runners, and many of us would be better off being less strict about our fuel. Kylee Van Horn and Zoë Rom are co-hosts of the podcast Your Diet Sucks. Kylee is the founder and owner of the sports nutrition business Flynutrition, which helps runners, triathletes, cyclists, and skiers to learn not only the “why” but the “how” behind fueling for performance. Zoë is an ultrarunner with top finishes at the Rio Del Lago, Run Rabbit, and Leadville 100's. As a journalist and writer, she specializes in environmental science, policy, endurance sports, and public land. Zoë's work has appeared in the New York Times, Outside, Discover, High Country News and on NPR. We talk about: The challenges of nutrition science communication How to examine media in the prevalence of pseudoscience Cultural narratives that influence dietary choices The role of social media and influencers around nutrition Balancing scientific evidence with personal experience Common nutrition mistakes and misconceptions Send this episode to your friend whose diet kinda sucks. One of the best ways to learn how to do something is to learn from someone who has “been there, done that”. And for Jamie King, she's “been there, done that” with several 100-mile finishes, most recently completing the Cascade Crest 100! Plus, she's also finished races such as the Born to Run 100 Miler, Bighorn 100 miler, and Rio Del Lago 100 miler, to name a few. And in this episode, she shares the key tips that have helped her to complete these races, all while having fun along the way. Jamie King is an ultrarunner, yogi, former yoga studio owner, and mom who has a passion for running, yoga, and having fun along in the way. And in this episode, she shares insights she's learned on her ultrarunning journey, why yoga has played a huge part in her success as a runner, and how she fine-tuned her nutrition and mental strategies along the way. In this episode, I am also joined by co-host Greg Lehman, who is a runner, writer, and all-around great human being who is setting out to complete his first 100-mile finish later this year at Pine to Palm 100! This was the 50th Year of the Western States 100 that starts in the Olympic Valley and ends at the Placer High School in Auburn. On the chat, we've got three of the four Floridians who took on the course! This year Tyler Peterson, Joseph Pinter, and Zach Hanna crossed that finish line to get that belt buckle. Tyler Peterson has done 100 Milers like the Long Haul 100 here in Florida, the Yeti 100, Burning River 100, Mohican 100, Kettle Moraine 100, Indiana Trail 100, and the Umstead 100. He finished the Western States 100 this year with a time of 25:24:44. Joseph Pinter has done races like the Cruel Jewel 100, Grindstone 100, Massanutten Mountain 100, and the Pinhoti 100. He also ran at the 2019 Western States 100! In 2019, he ran a time of 29:42:39... this year he ran a time of 29:13:11. Zach Hanna has done races like the Hennepin 100, Pinhoti 100, No Business 100, Rio Del Lago 100, and the Umstead 100. He finished the Western States 100 this year with a time of 28:37:16. For almost five decades, the Western States 100 has been home to some of the sport's most amazing and legendary competitions. It's essentially the Super Bowl of the trail running scene in the United States. With more than 1,500 dedicated volunteers helping to create a once-in-a-lifetime experience, the race has stirred the spirit of runners from all walks of life and from all over the globe.

Mae Barker and Zach Hanna were two of the three Floridians who made to the Hennepin 100 in Illinois this year! From one Western States qualifier to the next, they've done races like the Pinhoti 100, the Laurel Highlands, Umstead, and the Rio Del Lago 100! With a hurricane almost cancelling travel, this power couple was able to manage a flight into Chicago and make it to the race on time. Mae finished first place overall for the women with a time of 19:21:04! Zach followed behind with a time of 25:57:56. The Hennepin 100 is Illinois' only point-to-point, all-trail ultramarathon! It takes you from Sterling, Illinois on the Rock River to Colona, Illinois along the historic and beautiful Hennepin Canal. On the course, you pass by the historic locks and lift bridges, fields of corn, and the multitude of local farms. Mae is also the Race Director for the Angry Tortoise 25k/50k! Coming in 2023, the race will be celebrating in 10th year anniversary in the Cary State Forest, located on the outskirts of Jacksonville.

On this episode of the Salty Hunter Podcast, we are sitting down with Neil and my running coach Aaron Stacy. Aaron just completed his first 100-mile race at the Rio Del Lago and tells us his story. Anyone who runs 100 miles inherently meets challenges on the trail. This is Aaron's story of how he overcame his personal challenges during his race. Other topics include: the supportiveness of the ultrarunning community, painful arches, breaking your diet to refuel for the next leg of the race, chewing coffee beans for energy and bone broth at 3:00 AM saving your life. Of course, we talk about hunting, but this time Aaron and Neil take the lead and talk about ducks, training dogs and willfully following your hunting partners. Cat Bradley is an athlete that absolutely loves the sport. She's an ultra-endurance runner coached by Matt Fitzgerald who I had the pleasure of meeting this past August at the Endeavorun retreat in Boulder, CO. Her resume is shocking, in the best of ways: Winner of the 2017 Western States 100 Miler Winner of the 2017 Canyons Endurance Run 100k Former Fastest Known Time record holder of the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim in 7:52 (first woman to break 8 hours) Winner of the 2016 Rio Del Lago 100 Miler Winner of the 2018 Moab Red Hot 50k Winner of the 2018 Quicksilver 100k Winner of the 2019 Castle Rock Trail Festival 50k Winner of the 2020 TransRockies Run stage race (team division) I could go on, but I think you understand now that Cat Bradley is one of the best ultra runners in the United States. Cat didn't start out as a distance runner. In fact, she was an 800m specialist at the University of California - Santa Barbara. At about a half-mile, the 800m distance might as well be a different sport than ultras! Soon, Cat realized that she didn't love the track. She wanted some adventure and found herself taking time off from her college career to focus on through-hiking the Appalachian Trail. That's where she fell in love with mountains, woods, and losing yourself in the visceral beauty of nature. Within a few short years, Cat's passion for ultra distances bloomed and her competitive drive propelled her forward. Soon, she became one of the most dominant ultramarathon runners in the country. In this conversation, we discuss: How she made the switch from 800m track athlete to Appalachian Trail through-hiker to ultra runner The training demands of a 120 mile, 6-day stage race vs. a 100-mile ultra How she mentally grappled with pivoting her running career almost 180 degrees What made her start to believe she could run professionally How she trains for the Grand Canyon R2R2R FKT Whether you're about to run your first ultra or you're a seasoned veteran, you'll love this conversation with one of the sport's greats. They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. And you can get a free sampler pack of 4 flavors and 8 individual packets when you pay $5 in shipping. Elemental Labs' products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. The citrus flavor has quickly become my favorite. I'm drinking one a day now to help me get enough fluids in our dry Colorado air. It's tasty and delicious and I find that I'm not peeing every 45 minutes throughout the day, which might be an indication I wasn't eating enough sodium. There's now mounting evidence that higher sodium intake levels are not unhealthy – and athletes need substantially more than your typical sedentary person. Of course, ask your doctor if you're worried. But for those athletes running outside in the heat, an electrolyte replacement makes a lot of sense. They just released their first new flavor of 2021, their most requested flavor, watermelon salt. So check out Elemental Labs to try their new flavor or get a free sampler pack.

Julie Fingar is an elite runner with many podium Finnishes including Angeles Crest 100, Rocky Racoon 100, Rio Del Lago 100, Headlands 100 and top 10 finisher at Western States 100. Check out ITRA's Race Guidelines: a framework of standard operating guidelines that race organizers from around the world can reference, so that we can restart trail running events confident that we are applying good practice to keep our community of trail runners - including participants, volunteers and host communities - safe.
In our very first episode, we talk with Erika Hoagland - an amazingly talented ultrarunner and author of the column, I Am an Ultrarunner in URM. We sit down to chat about her race plans (pre-COVID), training for 100-milers while being a mom, the experience of fastpacking around Lake Tahoe on her honeymoon, and what (and where) she hopes to run in the future. Erika has some awesome stories from the trail and offers advice for those looking to train for a 100-miler. Meet my wonderful and inspiring friend Molly Sheridan of Reno, Nevada. Molly and I met while running the Badwater Ultramarathon through Death Valley, then again the La Ultra 222km at altitude in the Himalayas. She is a truely inspiring woman with an inspiring story. At 48 years old Molly entered her first marathon. Four weeks into training she injured her foot and was told that she was too old to be running. Taking her own advice, Molly corrected her training, mailed her finish-line picture to the doctor who told her she was old, and decided to challenge herself. As a novice runner, she entered the Rio Del Lago 100-mile Endurance Race. Traversing 100 miles non-stop through northern California, she discovered her love of endurance running, her youthful mind and her adventurous spirit. In the past 7 years, Molly has run over 50 ultramarathons. In 2009, she completed the extreme running event Marathon Des Sables (MDS), a seven-day, 150-mile stage race across the Sahara Desert. Eight weeks later, Molly completed the 135-mile, non-stop, Badwater Ultramarathon. An invitation-only event, Badwater is considered the toughest footrace on the planet. It begins at Badwater, Death Valley, the lowest point in the continental U.S., and ends at Mt. Whitney portal, a 13,000-foot vertical ascent. The documentary “Molly’s Run,” chronicling her Badwater run, for which she received the coveted buckle for finishing under the 48-hour time limit. Molly is the first American woman to attempt and complete La Ultra-The High ultra-marathon, a 138-mile non-stop footrace in the Himalayas. La Ultra begins at 14,000 feet, with climbs to 18,000 feet over two passes. The race culminates in the Morey Plains on the border between China and Pakistan. Even though the India Government stated that the race was physically impossible to complete, Molly completed the race August 13, 2011. Molly is featured among the “Women Who Move” in Women’s Running magazine; on Adventure Woman Radio, Nevada Public Radio KNPR, The Christian Science Monitor; and in the Las Vegas Review-Journal. As an owner of Desert Sky Adventures, a race management company in Las Vegas, Molly encourages others to walk and run for their health. She also speaks to audiences across the country on her exploits and the benefits of running for health and continues to run adventure races and ultra-marathons around the globe. In this interview we discuss Molly's adventures, the successes and failures and why you should still push your limits even when you are 61. We would also like to thank the sponsors of this show.
