A little overdue, but it's here: the recap (or…post mortem?!) of everything surrounding this year's New York City Marathon weekend!  Stef and Carolyn breakdown the course experience ‘chunk by chunk' and also celebrate the fact that it was Carolyn's return to the marathon distance after six, long years away due to injury. Stef shares her BTS perspective as a professional athlete who traveled to this world major marathon not to race, but rather, to support a friend, and how this kind of participation is often an overlooked aspect of the sport. Of course, there's also a discussion about the infamous, e-bike-induced controversy surrounding Matt Choi, which points to the bigger discussion about run-fluencers, content creators, and co-existence (does harmony exist?!).  There are lots of surprises, star-encounters, and personal “IMHO” reflections. We hope you enjoy our conversation as much as we did!  Special thanks to our Audio Engineer, Mark Kalagayan, from the non-profit, SPARC Worldwide. As always, we are so grateful you're here — in this space, in the sport, and in this world! #keepshowingup, keep running, and keep on being the change we wish to see. #MakingStridesPod #letsFlippindothis #diversewerun Find Stef here Find Carolyn here and here

Oh my... where do we start with this episode goodness?!? The highlight of this episode is the long-awaited podcast face-off between Des and her arch-nemesis Dakotah Popehn, nee Lindwurm. They trash talk with all of the intensity of two cats playing with a furry ball before licking each other clean. Combine that with Kara's Minnesota accent showing out in the presence of another Minnesotan, and you can imagine that this episode gets as heated as a cozy, warm blanket on a cold winter's day. Yes, it's amazing... Dakotah gives us the inside scoop on her race and recovery from NYC, and she takes us back down memory lane to talk about qualifying for the Olympics, what it would have meant to her late mother, and what it was like racing in Paris. Plus, she stares down Des while talking about taking at shot at her 50K record. Kara + Des + Dakotah... what more could you want?!  How about another half-episode complete with their hot takes on Matt Choi, the venues for Grand Slam Track, an Olipop Top 6, and the very first bleeped words ever on Nobody Asked Us? (Thank you Des for that). All of this adds up to an episode that you just can't miss.  Thank you so much to our sponsors for this episode. To support them and in turn support the podcast... Matt Choi is a 27-year-old former NCAA D1 football player, content creator, entrepreneur, and fitness enthusiast who decided to take on the Murph challenge every day for 30 days as an outlet to maintain his physical and mental wellbeing during the pandemic. Running a total of 60 miles in 30 days inspired a relationship with running that resulted in 12 marathons in 12 different cities in 12 months. The discipline and consistency required to maintain a high level of fitness for 365 days also provided opportunities to learn more about himself, meet so many different people and curate his experiences allowing him to live his life through his lens. Whether he is running a 100-mile ultramarathon or running across Korea, Matt lives by the mantra that, “the only limits we have are the ones we believe in” and uses gratitude to shift his mindset from complacency to contentment through every challenge, every interaction, and every piece of content. He appreciates the opportunity to show up and get a little better each day as he is consistently working on his speech to the world.  @mattchoi_6

The creator economy is a crowded space. Where do you even get started? If you spend a few minutes, or hours (no judgment), scrolling Instagram, it's easy to tell there are a lot of people working on growing a following. However, very few people seem to have tapped into doing it in an authentic way. Matt Choi, our guest on the podcast today, seems to be a natural at it. He started his journey as a creator by blending his passion for physical fitness with his first love: football. As a collegiate athlete, Matt felt he had let some of his potential as an athlete squander. After getting laid off as a personal trainer, Matt focused his energy on bettering himself and reconstructing the man in the mirror. As you'll hear in our discussion, the high-energy, enthusiastic, and relentlessly positive Matt Choi you see on camera, was formed after a college football career that tested Matt's attitude and character. But, that failure did not define him. One of the many things we love about Matt as a creator is his willingness and ability to just throw himself into the fire. He does not hold himself back from new challenges and embraces the process of sharing his growth progression, not simply showcasing all his "wins" (of which he has many). Matt has done 30 days straight of the Murph Challenge and now he's working towards running a marathon a month, and documenting the entire process along the way. His attitude toward life, business, and family is infectious, and any creator or business owner looking to refocus on "building the foundation" will take a lot of value from this conversation. By the time you finish listening to this conversation, we hope you ask yourself two questions: 1) when was the last time you turned a failure into a win and 2) do you know who you are? - if you don't have a good answer to either question it's okay! We challenge you to take a risk on something you feel you have been putting off or want to do.  If you are looking for a little Monday inspiration, give this one a listen and let us know what you think!SPONSORS The Carnivore Bar - 10% OFF - Delicious & convenient Pemmican Bar Fond Bone Broth - 15% OFF - REAL bone broth with HIGH-QUALITY ingredients! At first glance Matt Choi's evolution from college athlete to 3:05 marathoner and ultramarathoner doesn't seem remarkable. However, the more you dig into his athletic history the more remarkable it is. Matt Choi is an absolute beast and an amazingly energetic person. Matt played football at Monmouth University worked his tail off to get to that level. As an Asian-American, Matt didn't have anybody to model his game after. He learned to set his own path and made the most of his opportunities. After college Matt was unsure what to do next but he knew that sport would play a major role. Then COVID hit. Matt made a decision that would change his life. He decided to pursue endurance events with 100% effort and document the journey. Three years later Matt has completed a 100 miler and is knocking on the door of breaking 3:00 in the marathon. All while continuing to lift hard and be a well-rounded athlete. Following him on Instagram and TikTok at mattchoi_6 is always entertaining, informative, and complete with tons of inspiration. Sponsor: As Jason Fitzgerald loves to say: Stronger runners are faster runners. Strength train explosively and you'll soon be able to run explosively. Other than delaying fatigue or preventing injuries, the other big benefit to strength training is that you'll be able to sprint faster at the end of a race. You don't need hours every week. You're not a bodybuilder and you don't need to hit the gym 4-5 times every week. All that's needed to dramatically improve your strength, athleticism, injury resilience, power, and speed are two 30-60 minute sessions per week (that you can do at home). That's it. Matt graduated from Monmouth University in 2017 where he played football for four years as well. He left Monmouth with a degree in Business Marketing and shortly after entered the Management Trainee program at Stericycle. In 2019, Choi left Stericycle to found his own athletic performance development company, The Athletes' Marathon. Since then, he's trained local athletes in Maryland all the way up to NFL pros. So how did his own athletic journey lead him to personal training? And can we just get an alarm clock with Matt Choi speaking to us because that kind of motivation is unreal.

My guest in today's episode is Matt Choi. Matt is a successful, self-taught, professional trader with over 16 years of experience trading the markets. He is a CMT (Chartered Market Technician) who specializes in trading stocks, ETFs, futures, currencies, commodities, and options. An entrepreneur at heart, Matt owned and managed a successful car dealership after obtaining his MBA from McMaster University while he traded the markets on the side. He always knew that his passion lies in the financial markets because the opportunities there are limitless, and it can give him the mobile lifestyle that he wants. So he sold his business to focus full time on his trading. Unlike many professional traders whose experience come from working on the exchange floor or for large hedge funds trading other people's accounts, Matt's experience and knowledge was accumulated after years of trading his own money. Having been through the school of hard knocks, Matt knows firsthand all the common mistakes of the typical trader and has developed profitable trading strategies and a winning mindset that beat the markets. He shares the “3 Psychological Mindsets You Must Have To Beat Wall Street” in his Amazon Bestselling book “The Winning Way”, which he co-authored with Brian Tracy and other leading experts around the world. While he enjoyed the freedom that his trading success brought him, he wanted to help other traders achieve the same. So he founded Certus Trading to share his hard-learned knowledge and unique experience with other traders so that they can also enjoy the freedom that trading success could bring.
