What are some common nutrition myths that won't seem to die that continue to get passed on?What are some of the more common fad diets currently?A lot of athletes assume that data is the end all, be all of training information. While data is important, could you explain how data can be misinterpreted with respect to training and nutrition? In the age of influencers and social media where it seems that almost everyone has an opinion on nutrition, who are some people or websites that you recommend athletes check out for fact/science-based nutrition information? How much of a role does athletes seeking out perfection influence their likelihood of falling for misinformation and the latest nutrition trend?

While Kylee Van Horn is a Registered Dietitian and founder of Fly Nutrition, writer, lifelong runner and coach. Our discussion today is all about the dangers of social media influencers. We explore how social media and unqualified influencers are shaping (and often distorting) the way female athletes approach their nutrition, body image, and training. No one is immune to influencers –myself, Zoë and Kylee included– and we share why people are “influenced”, the rise of young girls wanting to become influencers, and where athletes fit into this. Supplements are a particular area of concern we dive into, explaining how a lack of regulation and scientific support allows influencers and supplement companies to run wild with marketing claims for expensive and potentially dangerous products. Today's chat, hosted by TJ David and Zoë Rom dives into the challenges of covering a super long, remote and technical race like the Hard Rock 100. The challenges of running a business and the constant work it takes to learn, adapt and be open to change. We take inspiration from NF's song, "Hope" and talk about what it means to us, while also reflecting back on "Champions Mindset" in the context of TJ's big win and 15 minute PR at the Silverton Alpine Marathon last weekend. We finish up by getting into how we both got into running and what advice we wish we could give our younger selves. This episode is jam packed with tons of goodies and takeaways, so you won't want to miss any of it. Happy New Year everyone and welcome to episode 56 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast. Today, we're tackling the topic of Winter Sports Nutrition, featuring Kylee Van Horn, RDN. Kylee is a sports dietitian based in the mountains of Colorado, regularly works with winter athletes in her private practice, FlyNutrition, and is a runner and winter athlete herself. Although I used to ski when I was young, I haven't done much more than sled down a small city hill in recent memory, so I invited Kylee on the show to discuss the many unique nutrition challenges that winter athletes face, and to share her expertise on how to fuel smartly and adequately in these conditions. We had a great chat filled with tons of useful information and winter fueling tips, including:What happens to your body in extreme cold or at high altitude, and how does this affect your nutrition and hydration needs? What types of strategies can you utilize in these environments, to stay well-fueled and hydrated?Logistical issues that make eating and drinking more difficult relating to winter sporting gear (e.g. trying to fuel while using poles)Differences that arise from one winter sport to the nextWhy remaining well-fueled and hydrated is so important to performance AND safety when in the mountainsAnd much more!If you engage in winter sports or want to in the future, get ready to take some notes! Microcosm Coaching Team Call 11/04/2022 We had a great call this week, diving deeper into the topic of mental setbacks and dealing with prolonged injury and illness. We started the conversation off by recapping Coach Zoë Rom's experience at the Puerto Vallarta 100k by UTMB and how she dealt with setbacks following Western States that ultimately paved the road to a great race there. From here, the conversation goes deeper as we hear from Coach Drew Connor and Kylee Van Horn about their experiences dealing with setbacks and the approaches they use and the advice they give their athletes. Coach and clinical social worker Sarah Strong offers some wonderful advice on acceptance and Coach Kristen Schindler helps transition the conversation to embracing community as a tool for working through setbacks. From what to eat before runs to how much macros and calories we need to properly fuel and recover without gaining weight, running nutrition can often seem complicated and difficult to follow. LMNT When coaching endurance runners of all levels to be their best, I always emphasize the need for proper hydration with the right balance of electrolytes. Most athletes I've coached are surprised to learn that their sodium needs are actually much higher than they expected and it's been hurting their performance. Part of the reason athletes need much more sodium than they think is not just because they lose electrolytes through their sweat, but also because athletes tend to eat very healthy diets. They've been told that salt is a bad thing in food and frequently don't get enough for their lifestyle. Much of the science of sodium is based on people who eat highly processed diets which also are very low in potassium. It could actually be the low potassium levels causing the issues that sodium has been blamed for! What is clear is that both sodium and potassium at the proper levels are essential for high performance (and for life in general!). That's why we partnered with LMNT to offer a free sample pack of their electrolyte mix. Head to drinklmnt.com/runnersconnect to get yours now. The Sample Pack includes 8 packets of LMNT (2 citrus, 2 raspberry, 2 orange, and 2 raw unflavored).

Kylee Van Horn, RDN is an endurance sports dietitian, who takes a balanced, sustainable approach to fueling the everyday person and athlete. Her mission is to separate facts from fads in the nutrition space and works to provide easy nutrition solutions to help improve health and performance. Today, Kylee is the founder and owner of her sports nutrition business Flynutrition, which helps runners, triathletes, and skiers to learn not only the ‘why' but the ‘how' behind fueling for performance. How did this lead you (or did it lead you) into the field of nutrition? -What led you to open up your own private practice and help athletes with nutrition? -When it comes to fueling as an athlete (especially a female runner), do you have a philosophy, quote, or few pillars that sum up how you see fueling? -You mention "creating a personalized nutrition roadmap" on your website as a part of working with you. Do you have any tips for an athlete on how to go about this process? -Under fueling and RED-S... What does it mean to be under-fueled? What are the potential consequences, and how might an athlete go about making sure they are fueling enough? -What are a few things (topics, considerations) that athletes don't consider enough? How about ones they over-stress or emphasize (that perhaps aren't as important) in the picture of fueling? -Are there any other topics you are most interested in as they pertain to athletes and fueling? -Looking back, what advice would you give to your younger self? -What is currently bringing you joy (outside of running/work)? -What does being a Strong Runner Chick mean to you? -How can listeners connect with you?
