Come on into this episode where we're talking all about coming out as a teenager.    In the studio with Anna, we have the inspiring LGBTQ+ advocate, author, TV presenter and celebrity-masterchef, Riyadh Khalaf.  Riyadh's challenging, but incredibly powerful, story of coming out as a teenager to his then Irish Catholic mother and Iraqi Muslim father, means he has much wisdom to pass on to our listener today. Our dilemma is from a listener struggling to come out to her parents, whilst also dealing with grief over losing the only family member who knew she was gay and who was a great support to her.  Alongside Riyadh, we have best-selling author and much-loved psychotherapist, Owen O'Kane. Owen not only generously shares his expertise but also has his own coming out story to share, having come to terms with his sexuality while training to be a priest.  Anna, Riyadh and Owen have a conversation filled with warmth, laughter, pain and joy where they offer concrete advice to our listener on finding connection and acceptance, chosen families, bringing shame out into the light and, throughout it all, finding your courage.    While this episode is an inspiring listen, it does mention self-harm, suicide and a non-consensual sexual encounter. On episode 44 of the Public Sector Executive Podcast, host Dan Benn was joined by former Lord Mayor of Manchester, Carl Austin-Behan OBE. Carl spoke about everything ranging from his time in the RAF, being Manchester's first openly gay Lord Mayor, and the important work he does now, with the LGBT Foundation.Speaking on his time in the Royal Air Force, Carl said “they just sat me down and said ‘ do you have homosexual tendencies?' In that split second I had to make my decision, whether I was going to be true to myself and this was the moment where I could be, or I could lie.“I think If I'd said no, the Air Force would have been like ‘thank you very much, we just had to ask' but they asked again, and I burst into tears.”Carl also touched on the improvements that have been made in workplaces, since that time, saying that “Because of the way that a lot of organisations have moved on, I think they also realise that they've got to treat the LGBTQ community in their workforce, with respect. Also, we've now got things like LGBT History Month, which we never used to have, and everyone knows about.“It does frustrate me sometimes because, if you're a business or organisation that are bringing people in to do a talk – which is great, but it doesn't have to just be during LGBT History Month or Pride Month. For me, permanent visibility is permanent acceptance.”

Start your engines because Shane Jenek AKA Courtney Act joins me for the final episode of my mini-series, Make It Reign with Pride! Shane has had many iconic international and historic moments as his drag persona, Courtney Act after they appeared in the first series of Australian Idol in 2003, becoming the first LGBT contestant to openly appear on a reality TV talent show downunder.International fame came knocking after Courtney Act became the runner up in the sixth season of Ru Paul's Drag Race and was later named as the third most powerful drag queen in America by New York Magazine. Courtney went on to win UK's Celebrity Big Brother and in 2019 was the first same-sex pairiing in the Australian version of Dancing With The Stars. Now Shane has launched his own podcast, Building Queertopia on BBC Sounds, which brings together members and allies of the LGBTQ+ community by asking them to envision a perfect ‘queer utopia' where everyone is welcome. But before you RACE off to listen to it, this episode is a corker as we talk about growing up fearing straight men, how drag affected his mental health and how his relationship with body image has changed. SO much of what Shane says in this episode speaks of my own experiences grappling with my identity so I hope you feel heard and seen by the episode! If you have missed this series so far, this mini-series of four episodes features some of the most prominent role models in the LGBTQ+ community - from Cara Delevingne to Samira Wiley - to celebrate Pride Month. It's something that means so much to me because when I was growing up I didn't feel like I truly had any role models - like Shane- and I know that listening to these guests would have helped ‘younger me' and also, ‘adult me' during the multiple times in my life when I have struggled with taking pride in who I am. If you are struggling with your identity at the moment or just need someone to talk to please reach out to the LGBT Foundation, who I mentioned in this episode. Author, activist and transgender trailblazer, Paris Lees joins me for the third episode of my mini-series, Make It Reign with Pride, and it is one of the most eye opening conversations I have ever had. Paris Lees is the definition of a LGBTQIA+ trailblazer. She was the first openly trans woman to present a show on Radio 1, to present a show on Channel 4, to appear on Question Time and become a contributing editor for Vogue. She's even had a cameo on Hollyoaks, addressed the Oxford Union in 2014, and in 2016 gave evidence at the home affairs select committee on prostitution laws. But her personal story, which she details in her powerful new memoir 'What It Feels Like For A Girl', tells even more of a story. It is a brutally honest account of her being groomed for sex work as a teenager, the abuse she suffered from her father, being physically bullied at school, and how she came to terms with her identity. In spite of all this adversity and ending up in prison as a teenager after committing a robbery, Paris went to college and went on to graduate at Brighton University with a degree in English language and literature and finds herself where she is today. Hearing Paris Lee's lived experiences in this episode was remarkable as we reflected on chosen family, spectrum grace in the LGBTQIA+ community and how despite experiencing the darkest of times she found her power. This mini-series of four episodes will feature some of the most prominent role models in the LGBTQ+ community from Cara Delevingne to Samira Wiley, to celebrate Pride Month - something that means so much to me! May the lord open! The Emmy award winning The Handmaid's Tale star Samira Wiley joins me for the second episode of Make It Reign with Pride, opening up about being same-sex parents, coming out, and learning to take pride in the intersections of her identity. Samira Wiley has been the definition of a role model since she first starred as Poussey in Orange Is The New Black. Samira went on to win an Emmy Award for her performance as Moira in The Handmaid's Tale which she dedicated to her wife, Lauren. She received the Human Rights Campaign's Visibility Award, and appeared as a couple on the cover of OUT magazine, giving same sex relationships the visibility they deserve! YES! I caught up with Samira just a few months after the birth of their baby daughter, George and she has so many amazing words about raising a new generation to take pride in their identity. Samira herself is now proud to call herself a ‘gay woman' but it hasn't always been the case, as as Samira revealed she was encouraged to enter into a fake ‘relationship' with a gay male friend to protect her career. Now Samira, who credits playing Moira in The Handmaid's Tale with helping her find her voice, sees her relationship as one of her greatest achievements and we love to hear it! I have to confess that I have been obsessed with Samira since I started watching The Handmaid's Tale - which I think is THE best TV show ever made (it's a fact!) - so of course we had a little chat about season four. If you haven't caught up, there are some plot spoilers in the first ten minutes so listen with caution! This mini-series of four episodes will feature some of the most prominent role models in the LGBTQ+ community to celebrate Pride Month - something that means so much to me! Cara Delevigne joins me for the first episode of my new mini-series, Make It Reign with Pride and opens up about sexuality, sex and even some hilarious stripper stories - I promise this episode has it all! This mini-series of four episodes will feature some of the most prominent role models in the LGBTQ+ community to celebrate Pride Month - something that means so much to me! When I was growing up I didn't feel like I truly had any role models, and I know that listening to these guests would have helped ‘younger me' and also, ‘adult me' during the multiple times in my life when I have struggled with taking pride in who I am. Cara Delevingne has been a role model to many since she started her modelling career just after leaving school. She went on to be the face of quite literally everything from Dior to Chanel, she's won Model of The Year at the British Fashion Awards twice, and has found huge - and at times - isolating levels of fame. Cara then stepped into the world of movies with a role in Anna Karenina before taking on leading roles in Suicide Squad, Paper Towns before landing as a fairy in Amazon Prime's TV extravaganza, Carnival Row. I caught up with Cara on a HAWT day whilst she was filming on location in Prague - so hot in fact that the windows had to be open - sorry about the background noise, but a girl has to stay cool! She opens up about becoming an entrepreneur with her sex tech brand, Lora DiCarlo, the stigma around female masturbation - including being shamed for masturbating at boarding school - and how after coming out as Pansexual last year, she is now defining her own sexuality on her own terms. We also talk about her ongoing journey with mental health, her views on plastic surgery and what pride means to her. Cara's honesty in this episode is incredible, and shows that even role models don't have all the answers - because at the end of the day, who does? And that is the most reassuring thing of all, especially when you are discovering who you are! If you are struggling with your identity at the moment or just need someone to talk to please reach out to the LGBT Foundation, who I mentioned in this episode. In our latest episode, the clash of two worlds; the possible and the struggle. We are confronted with the insane disparity between a world ripe with potential with the swipe of a smart phone, and a world that is fighting for basic access to a fifty year old contraceptive technology and links to HIV prevention for African women. Ben chats with Sean Howell, co-founder of the LGBT social media site Hornet App and Chair of the LGBT Foundation. With all the concerns about privacy and political hacking, social and digital media may seem a curious place to disclose your HIV status, that you are U=U (undetectable equals untransmittable) or that you are on PrEP. Yet, that is exactly the future Sean is building. Join us as we have a rollercoaster of a conversation, up and down the insanely fast-moving world of technology that will affect the health and wellness of everyone. But just beforehand, Ben catches up with South African HIV and women's rights activist, Yvette Raphael, recorded from Durban, South Africa. We met Yvette in the 3rd episode of the podcast, and she is in Durban for the South African HIV Conference. She gives us a direct update on the results of the largest trial ever of just under 8000 women across eastern and southern Africa - looking at whether different contraceptive options affect their risk of HIV transmission. The trial is called ECHO and the bottom line is that a woman's risk of getting HIV is not negatively impacted by whichever contraceptive she takes. This is huge news and can't be ignored by governments and funders. It must transform the way HIV and family planning work together, particularly across sub Saharan Africa. Episode 40: Wynonna Earp Season 2 (Note: Because of the way this episode was recorded, the audio isn't as clean as usual. Everything is audible, but some of the hiccups that get edited out couldn't be this time.) Andi managed to get Lise into the paranormal Canadian awesome that is Wynonna Earp and now here they are doing a talk about Season 2, which gave more of everything that is so good about the show, but also delved even more into the relationships between characters and introduced a few more—one becomes part of our Earp posse, the other proves a nice foil for Doc Holliday and the others prove to be amazing paranormal villain-types. Both Andi and Lise love how the writing of the show is so strong and weaves so many subplots into the main themes and narratives and how you miss things the first time through and when you re-watch, it’s a richer experience, in some ways, than the first time through because you then see how the threads of the show are woven together so tightly and how the character arcs evolve. Andi and Lise talk about Season 1 of Wynonna Earp Season 2 trailer HERE Watch Season 1 and 2 on Netflix (US and Canada). Watch Season 3 live or stream episodes on SyFy (US) and Space (Canada) ********  ALSO! IF YOU ARE UK-BASED, HERE’S A CHANCE TO PARTICIPATE IN AN IMPORTANT SURVEY.   Details, via Alison Condron at the LGBT Foundation in Manchester: I work for the Women’s Programme at LGBT Foundation in Manchester. We have just launched a major piece of research into the sexual wellbeing of women who have sex with women. As part of our annual health campaign for lesbian and bisexual women, we are working closely with renowned researcher Professor Catherine Meads - who has been conducting research into LGBT health needs since 1992 – to launch a large-scale survey asking women who have sex with women* (WSW) about their experiences centred around sexual wellbeing.   This survey aims to look past a clinical approach to sexual health to consider other key factors including pleasure, exploration, health, behaviour, access to services, confidence, and consent. This survey will run from August-November 2018 and will be followed by themed national focus groups later in the year, based on preliminary survey findings. You can read more information about it and access the survey here: bit.ly/WSWsurvey2018 Thank you!
