Only one in three children in the UK enjoy reading in their spare time – the lowest rate recorded in 20 years, according to a survey for the National Literacy Trust. Best-selling children's author Katherine Rundell, whose books include Impossible Creatures and The Explorer, says that represents a crisis of reading which will make it harder to tackle disinformation. She thinks every school should have a library that is subject to an Ofsted inspection and literacy should be included in teacher training programmes to try to tackle the decline in children reading for pleasure. Amol and Katherine also discuss why Donald Trump's re-election as US president led her to donate all the royalties from US sales of The Golden Mole (published under the title Vanishing Treasures in America) to climate charities. In this solo episode, I reveal why a structured Staff Wellbeing Framework is the key to reducing burnout, improving retention and fostering a thriving school culture. Many schools believe they’re supporting staff wellbeing, but without a clear framework, efforts often rely on scattered initiatives like self-care workshops and social events—leaving the deeper causes of stress and burnout unaddressed. It’s time to shift from reactive, one-off solutions to a strategic, lasting approach that truly supports educators. In this episode, I break down: The true purpose of a Staff Wellbeing Framework and how it differs from general wellbeing initiatives The biggest misconceptions about implementing a Staff Wellbeing framework Why a wellbeing framework is essential for schools struggling with burnout, high turnover, cultural issues or major changes How schools with already strong cultures can further enhance their staff wellbeing strategies A step-by-step approach to embedding a Staff Wellbeing Framework that actually works Links and Resources: Join our FREE online training to learn more about the 6-step process for building a Staff Wellbeing Framework that works. Moment of Zen: “The person who deserves most pity is a lonesome one on a rainy day who doesn't know how to read.” — Benjamin Franklin The Letter: Dear Senate Education Committee Members, Thank you for your thoughtful consideration and questions about the “Library in Every School” bills that are sponsored by Senator Camilleri (SB741, SB742) and Senator Bayer (SB743). At yesterday's Senate Education Committee Meeting, members of the committee asked for data about school libraries. The Michigan Association of School Librarians (MASL) has a wealth of data and we will share some of it below in several forms. The Michigan reading test scores rise with the extent to which the state's school library programs are headed by qualified school librarians. The relationship between school libraries and test scores cannot be explained away by other school or community conditions at any school level. Connecting every school in the world to the Internet One in three people around the world still doesn't have access to the Internet, including 1.3 billion children who can't get online at home. But many of these children can't connect at school either, meaning they won't learn digital skills that are desperately needed in an increasingly digital world. Without them they stand little chance of lifting themselves out of poverty. A global initiative run by UNICEF and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) aims to connect every single school in the world to the Internet by 2030. But how will this be done? How do you even find every school in the world? Will governments co-operate? These questions and others are answered on this special edition of Somewhere on Earth: The Global Tech Podcast, by Chris Fabian, co-founder and co-leader of Giga – the initiative to give every young person access to information, opportunities and choice. The programme is presented by Gareth Mitchell and the studio expert is Peter Guest. For new episodes, subscribe wherever you get your audio. If you like Somewhere on Earth rate and review it. Imagine being able to take EVERY school holidays off, and not just keep your business running, but actually have a successful GROWING business? Sounding like a pipe-dream... maybe something you can achieve in the future? It's not about cramming all your work into the terms and then, exhausted, flopping onto the couch for the school holidays.. what we're talking about is having a business that allows you to live life during the terms as you would hope to (with enough time for yourself and your family) AND also be able to have a significant amount of holidays during the year. Thing is, if you don't structure your business to be able to do that now, then it's highly unlikely that your future business will enable you to do it either! In today's episode my special guest, Kate Swann, founder of Kate Swann Psychology, shares with us how she almost reached the point of burnout in her practice, what she learned in streamlining her business so she could work less, earn more and be able to take all school holidays off - guilt-free! LifeVac Founder Arthur Lih Is Donating One Of His Life Saving Choking Rescue Devices to EVERY School in the US. THAT'S AMAZING so I'm helping share this news to make sure every school takes advantage of this generous gift. LifeVac Helps Prevent Senseless Choking Deaths. And Arthur Lih who invented the life saving device thinks every school in the US should have one on hand…in case. ‘School budgets' or lack of budgets, were holding up progress on implementing the idea, so passionate Arthur Lih got frustrated and said, never mind, I'll do it myself and donate one to every school in the U.S. I don't care what it costs. It's gonna cost him millions, but Arthur Lih doesn't care. He's obsessed with making sure as many people as possible have access one of these life-saving devices that could mean the difference between life and death, in minutes, for anyone at any age. Arthur set out on the Life Vac mission some years ago when he was nearby a woman in a hospital weeping following the death of her young son. A grape had become lodged in the child's windpipe and the Heimlich Maneuver did not work. Arthur, the father of a similar aged child at the time, was deeply pained and deeply affected by the tragedy that he felt could have been avoided. So, he set out to do something! Arthur, who had a little bit of a background in making things, invented a simple apparatus that could clear an airway in basically a single suction pull, in the hopes that no child would ever die a senseless choking death again. Arthur's goal and LifeVacs' goal, is to save as many lives as possible throughout the world. They're doing a great job. So far 1290 lives have been saved by having a LifeVac on hand! At LifeVac, research and development headquarters in Springfield Gardens, NY, there is actually a “Wall of Saves” featuring people of all ages who lives were saved thanks to LifeVac. Those lives include, among others, a 3 yr old little girl who choked on a peanut, a 90 yr old woman in a Senior Living Facility who choked on a food, an 82 yr old man who choked on a carrot, a 2 1/2 yr old girl who choked on a grape, a 7 yr old girl who choked on bacon, and a 1 yr old girl who choked on a hot dog. The list of ‘saves' continues to grow. Just recently LifeVac Europe reported that a 70-year-old man at a private hospital in the North East of England choked on a piece of chicken, causing a complete airway obstruction. On the 2nd application LifeVac successfully dislodged the obstruction saving his life. Arthur Lih says, “We have now touched the lives of almost 1300 individuals and their families. Together we are making a difference one life at a time.” Incredible rescues around the world thanks to LifeVac's upper airway clearing device which is they say, the safest, simplest method to save an aspirating person. Again, Arthur Lih is DONATING A LIFEVAC TO EVERY SCHOOL IN THE US. Please make sure someone from your school, your child's school or a school near you gets in touch with LifeVac to get their free LifeVac Choking Rescue Device Kit. The Education Minister's defending a million dollar campaign that aimed to encourage kids to go to school Last August, Education Minister Jan Tinetti launched the Every School Day is a Big Day campaign. But documents released under the Official Information Act reveal it wasn't expected to have a direct, quantifiable impact on attendance rates in itself. Education Minister Jan Tinetti told Mike Hosking the campaign in combination with other work they've done has improved attendance this year. She says they know every single initiative and effort they've done is making a difference. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
What if your state decided it was important for EVERY school to have a comprehensive counseling program in place - even if it wasn't the ASCA National Model - and made it easy for schools to implement the program? That's the question Indiana posed, and answered, by developing a comprehensive counseling program called Carrying the Torch to Student Success AND developing a free online learning platform so that every school could implement the program. Listen in to hear how Indiana made all of this happen.
Rep. Richie Torres is proposing to expand the federal Gun Free School Zones Act's current 1,000-feet "gun free zone" around schools to 5,000-feet around every public, private, charter school and "early childhood education centers"; a move that could result in millions of lawful gun owners inadvertently breaking federal law and potentially serving years in prison for simply bearing arms in public.
Tech is tricky. Some platforms can be helpful and expansive in creating our views of the world, others create an echo chamber or a “vortex of views”. It is important that we teach our kids the difference between the two. Equally important is our support of teachers in helping them navigate the areas of tech to find the best educational practices. EverySchool.org is an organization that strives to do both of these things, the EdTEch Triangle can give educators a framework of research based decision making when creating lesson plans and intentionally adding tech to their curriculum. Blythe Winslow is the co-founder and executive director of Everyschool.org. She's also the co-author of the Ed Tech Triangle - a tool that can educate, inform and support all teachers who want to use tech intentionally. In this episode we talk about the importance of print versus the digital screen, the EdTech Triangle and Everyschool.org Parent Groups.

In our most recent book, 7 Mindshifts for School Leaders: Finding New Ways to Think About Old Problems, we introduce 7 Mindshifts that principals and other school leaders can use to solve problems that are constantly plaguing our schools. It's important that not every problem requires these shifts, but rather those that are important, persistent, and urgent. When a problem is IPU, we use our first mindshift, A Crisis Mindset. In this episode, Joe and T.J. explore what it really means to use a Beginner's Mindset when solving a problem. It's hard to accept, but our experience can prevent us from seeing solutions. Joe and T.J. were first introduced to this concept when they interviewed the late Richard Elmore on what it means to be a learning leader. Key Points Reinforced Throughout the Podcast The Beginner's Mindset sheds preconceived ideas and thoughts on what should be done. Our own expertise can get in the way of seeing ideas and opportunities. Look to great business examples like Sarah Blakely of Spanx who sought to solve a problem she was facing as a real estate agent. Who would have thought she would have revolutionized shapewear? The Spaghetti Tower activity says it all. Each mindshift in the book is equipped with a model to help school leaders navigate the process of analyzing a problem and finding new solutions. The Beginner's Mindset Model is designed to ignite the childlike mind needed to see new possibilities and dream new realities. We hope you enjoy this book to lead better and grow faster as school leaders. We always appreciate a like, a follow, a comment, or a share. And, if you're on Amazon, please rate it. We teach with a real-world curriculum so that our students can make connections that lead to deeper learning. Why can't we do the same for behavior? Today's guest has done just that. Jason Haniger created a Token Economy that reflects the real-world economy we live in. The result? Students at Barry School improved their behavior while developing financial literacy skills they'll use for the rest of their lives. In this episode, we talk with Jason about how you can utilize behavior points to teach students about interest, stocks, taxes, and budgeting AND how to improve behavior through your extra-curricular programs. He talked about the many benefits of good marketing. He kicks us off with gems right from the start. Joe asked about how school leaders can get started, and Dan talks about your core story--what are the three top impressions that you want your audience to know about? Dan talks about the broad themes that leaders can think about as takeaways that they want for their audience and then the stories that go with those themes. Don't miss what he says about knowing your audience and the wide variety of audiences that we have, including parents, students, community members, voters, politicians, union members, etc. He also reminds us that how we target each is vital since we can't be everything to everybody. Don't miss the answer to this one. Dan's Mantra is classic marketing: the most amount of people for the least amount of effort. What's the plot and compelling narrative? Don't miss what he says about reading novels! Dan wants to learn more about photography. Listen to what he says about the value of a photo and the gift his wife possesses. This was a great conversation with Amy Tyson, co-founder alongside Blythe Winslow of Everyschool.org Ed-tech in schools is one of those things that has left parents with more questions than answers. Is it necessary? what is meaningful use what is not? Is 4 hours of homework on a device really beneficial? She was so knowledgeable and kind. Some things we discussed : Ø What is the digital dilemma that schools are being faced with in introducing tech in schoolsØ weUnpack the Ed-Tech Triangle and how schools can implement it Ø Using “tech for techs sake” and what it means for childrens academic outcomesØ Relevance of tech on learning, educational apps and kids with special needs. - Forming local parent of every school in your communityIf you know an educator or parent who may benefit from this please do share so we can get the information in the hands of more people. xoxoxo Penny
Do we want a Drag Queen for every school because they're fun, or do we want someone who will stand up for our children and back the parents? To me, the choice is simple.....
When you think of physical education, or PE, or gym class - what do you remember? Probably the physical side of it, like jump rope or pull-ups or dodgeball or kickball. But what blew our mind in today's conversation is all of the seemingly invisible, yet intentional, ways PE class teaches us about social interactions, our own capabilities, deconstructing perfectionism, and more - and frighteningly, how so many schools in the US now don't mandate PE, as it's a class that's having to fight for its right to exist in the education system. As we kick off the new 2022-2023 school year, listen to what we'll be missing out on in our next generation if we don't start thinking about what and how we teach our children. What to listen for: Why PE is important - especially when it goes beyond the measurements and into being a social laboratory How resistance shows up in physical education, and how to address it Helping children navigate the difficult or uncomfortable conversations that play out in spaces of play The privilege Sherri feels of being a Black American woman living in Europe About Sherri: Sherri Spelic teaches elementary physical education at an international school in Vienna, Austria. She has written extensively on topics related to education, identity, and power and among other things publishes a monthly social justice newsletter for educators: Bending The Arc. It doesn't matter what country you live in, or what industry you build a career in, STEM skills are increasingly important - particularly for children and students who are yet to join the world of work. Introducing robotics to children at a young age in the same way that we enroll them in soccer or piano lessons should be a real consideration. However, the participation costs are often so prohibitive that it's out of the question for most schools and parents. On Episode 11 of Season 2, we're joined by entrepreneur and philanthropist, Jared Schrieber. He envisions a world where there are as many elementary and high school robotics teams as there are basketball or football teams. He founded Revolution Robotics; a non-profit dedicated to making robotics hardware and software kits accessible to all communities, to make his vision into a reality.SUBSCRIBE TO THE ROBOT BRAINS PODCAST TODAY | Visit therobotbrains.ai and follow us on YouTube at TheRobotBrainsPodcast, Twitter @therobotbrains, and Instagram @therobotbrains.| Host: Pieter Abbeel | Executive Producers: Alice Patel & Henry Tobias Jones | Production: Fresh Air Production See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
