This week, it's part 2 of our discussion with musician and friend of the show Blake Ellis. This week's topic, is the loud and awe-inspiring rock music of years gone by now permanently a thing of the past? In the same way that loud and powerful cars left an indelible mark on our souls, loud guitar amplifiers have done the same thing. Both from a listening and a performing standpoint. But now, the need and usage for such an amp is no longer. The modern guitarist can get by with much smaller amps, or do away with amps altogether. New pedalboards that model amps have taken their place. And while this does mean there is an increased ease of use, quality control, and lower expense, digital recreations also leave a lack of character in the music. And if we get stuck digitally recreating tones and sounds, will we ever be able to move music forward as an artform? That brings us to our next topic: The Weeknd's new album Dawn FM. Most tracks sound very reminiscent of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. And for good reason, considering producing icon Quincy Jones worked on the album! Dawn FM showcases a strong push to the retro when it comes to modern music. A push that's been building and growing for several years now. Is it time to move on from the sound of years past? Is it even possible to move music forward without copying the sound of something old? Will creativity, the unforgettable impact of being pummeled by a wall of sound, and incredible musicianship be lost to the sands of time? Let's go ahead and get into it.Join the discussion!Check out Blake Ellis's music HEREFollow us:FacebookInstagramYouTubeOfficial WebsiteEmail us: TheCatchupCast@Gmail.comSupport the show (https://www.nosignalrocks.com/the-catchup-podcast/)

Eurocup 2020 has finally arrived and Jay's brought his favorite national anthem from each group to the show this week for a little side contest of sorts. We rate each based on originality and artistic merit, tally the scores and come up with our own tournament winners. Song: The Sheepdogs - Rock & Roll (Ain't No Simple Thing)King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard just released their 18th album Butterfly 3000 &, while it's first time hearing the band, Nick is all in. The album is very different from their previous efforts, which is actually a common trait of the band. This time they bring a Psychedelic/Prog/Pop sound to the table and, everyone concurs, it is an absolute joy of a listen!Song: King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Catching SmokeFor our ninety-seventh episode, Greg brings us the music of 1997. After a run through of the best albums released, Greg decided to take the newsworthy events of the year and turn them into the latest edition of “Viral or Eyeroll”. The competition is fierce as Nick & Jay battle it out, trying to recall obscure moments from their sophomore year in High School. Another good adaptation of our ongoing 90s in the 90s & quite enjoyable to boot!Song: Radiohead - “Airbag”

Fresh off their success with Highway to Hell, Australian band AC/DC was planning a follow-up when tragedy struck. Front man Bon Scott was found “dead by misadventure” after a drinking binge. The group would have to audition a replacement for their seventh studio album, and Brian Johnson was brought in on lead for Back In Black. The new album was recorded in Nassau in the midst of a batch of tropical storms - a fact referenced in the opening lines of “Hells Bells.” In addition to front man Johnson, the group was comprised of lead guitarist Angus Young, his brother Malcolm Young on rhythm guitar, Cliff Williams on bass, and Phil Rudd on drums.Back In Black was an immediate commercial success. It is considered one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time. The group deliberately avoided using any of Bon Scott's lyrics for the album — not wanting to be perceived as profiting from their band mate's death. The album's all black cover was done in mourning for Scott. The album was so successful that many of their previous albums entered the charts, riding the coat tails of Back In Black.Shoot to Thrill"Shoot to thrill, play to kill, too many women with too many pills." This high energy song is typical of the album as a whole. The song itself was inspired by a story Johnson read about a drug dealer selling narcotics to depressed housewives. What Do You Do For Money, HoneyFolks, let's face it: there's just not a lot of subtlety in AC/DC lyrics. It's pretty much all about sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll. "You're lovin' on the take and you're always on the make/Squeezin' all the blood outta men. Yeah, we're standin' in a queue just to spend the night with you. It's business as usual again."Have a Drink On MeThis track was the B-side to the single "Shook Me All Night Long." and followed that song on the album. The song is about (get this) having a drink on me. ;-)Rock and Roll Ain't Noise PollutionWhile the song takes a slow blues start, it kicks in with straightforward, head banging rock. This is the final track on the album, and the fourth and final single released from the album. The B-side to this single was "Hells Bells," the lead-off track for the album. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:I'm Alright by Kenny Loggins (from the motion picture "Caddyshack")You have to have the dancing groundhog in your head for this one! Caddyshack and Airplane were both released in the summer of 1980. Actor Bill Murray's riffs throughout Caddyshack are legendary. STAFF PICKS:“Boulevard” by Jackson BrowneRob's staff pick is inspired by Hollywood Boulevard and the runaway kids on the street. Life is hard on the Boulevard, but that doesn't mean this is where you will always be. This song from the album "Holdout" was one of Browne's most successful songs. "Everybody walks right by like they're safe or something. They don't know."“Snortin' Whiskey” by the Pat Travers BandWayne's staff pick cranks the volume up to 11 on a high energy blues-tinged rock anthem. There's little doubt about what the song means when it leads off with the lyrics "Snortin' whiskey, drinkin' cocaine." “Emotional Rescue” by the Rolling StonesBruce gets himself in trouble this week by picking this less-than-popular disco-influenced song. Although Keith Richards contributes backing vocals, it is said that he did not like the whole disco vibe. Although it was a number 1 rock song, the Rolling Stones never played it live until 2013. “All Night Long (live)” by Joe WalshBrian redeems the staff picks by bringing this Joe Walsh live classic. It made it on both the rock and country charts. This song appeared on the soundtrack to the motion picture "Urban Cowboy." LAUGH TRACK:“Gimme Some Lovin'” by The Blues BrothersAnother motion picture comedy that hit the theaters in 1980 featured lots of cameos from blues and soul icons.

In the fun movie “School of Rock”, Jack Black tells his students that there are more important things than hitting every note. Rock ‘n' roll ain't about being perfect. Sometimes the important thing is the feeling, the passion, perhaps even the chaos. “Perfect” is an abstraction, and if it ever really exists in this world, it must be fleeting. It's an ideal, and while we might strive for it, measuring ourselves against it is a recipe for misery. Instead, we can embrace ourselves, our practice, and the world as they are, with all their strangeness and uniqueness, in their state of being imperfect and incomplete, giving them our enthusiasm and our passion. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/beautiful-thought/message
Join us as we pay tribute to the greatest rock n roll album of all time: AC/DC's "Back in Black" album that debuted 40 years ago on July 25, 1980! The AC/DC team of Angus Young (lead guitar), Malcom Young (rhythm guitar), Brian Johnson (vocals), Cliff Williams (bass guitar) and Phil Rudd (drums) produced the greatest selling rock n roll album of all time (with over 50 million albums sold) that includes classics such as "Back in Black," "Shoot to Thrill," "Hells Bells," "You Shook Me All Night Long," "Rock n Roll Ain't Noise Pollution," and more!! Back in Black is a must listen for any music fan!! Check out more about AC/DC at www.acdc.com!!
By 1979 AC/DC had released a handful of studio albums, toured endlessly and had gained a solid following, especially in Australia, where brothers Malcolm and Angus Young started the band back in 1973. But they still hadn’t achieved the commercial breakthrough they were looking for. That would finally happen with the release of their album 'Highway to Hell'. It was their first LP to break the US Top 100, eventually hitting #17. The album’s title track was a big reason for the album’s success as it went to #47 on Billboard’s Pop Singles Chart. With the Young brothers in their song-writing prime and rock radio thirsting for more AC/DC, the band was primed for even bigger success with their follow-up album. But on February 19th, 1980 just days ahead of their return to the studio, the band’s lead singer Bon Scott was found dead. Soon after a fairly unknown 33-year old singer named Brian Johnson came in to audition for the job and the band released 'Back in Black' on July 25th, 1980. It was an immediate commercial success, debuting at number one on the British albums chart and reaching number four on the American chart. It topped the British chart for two weeks and stayed in the top 10 of the American chart for more than five months. In December of 2019 'Back in Black' reached the 25 million mark in US Sales. The album has also sold one million or more copies in Canada, Germany and France. Worldwide, it went on to sell 50 million copies and is second only to Michael Jackson’s 'Thriller' in total copies sold around the world. Episode 19 of TSORR went live at midnight on 10 May 2019. It's probably the first show that had a mellow start in the form of ACDC's Rock 'n' Roll Ain't Noise pollution. The audience reaction to this episode was excellent on the Whatsapp line. That was good to know as it was probably the most diverse show I have done so far. It ranged from Joe Jackson to Metallica, Alice In Chains to Sheryl Crow. Beware that Joe Jackson will get stuck in your head :-)I played a lot of lesser known stuff, bands like Wilson, Kris Barras Band, Bullet Boys, Los Labios & Black Spiders along with the usual heavy weights Dio, Van Halen, Metallica, Black Sabbath & ACDC. SA music was represented by Aking and it was great to hear Johnny Is Nie Dood Nie, the Koos Kombuis classic, if you have ever been at a festival where he has played that you will know how wonderful it is, goosebumps.

Escuchamos Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution, Let Me Put My Love Into You, Back in Black, Hells Bells - AC/DC

Andrew Juge and Kevin Held join Ralph to discuss the impact of Victor Butler's season ending injury. Andrew believes the loss of Butler might be the worst case scenario for the Saints pass rush. Ralph wonders if now the Saints pass rush is counting too heavily on Junior Galette. Andrew beats the drum for John Abraham and Kevin thinks Rob Ryan blaming the Saints run defense on bad scheme might not be accurate because he's Rob Ryan and you know...a lunatic. The boys then discuss Devery Henderson and Sedrick Ellis signing elsewhere. Andrew explains the strange decline of Ellis. They wrap up with yet another bracket in the Tournament to decide Kevin 'Iron Eagle' Held's wrestling entrance music. Juge melts down over his hatred of Nick Cave and Ralph goes bonkers over Game of Thrones and Rains of Castamere... it's worth your time just to hear it.
