The WV Hive announces a training session for businesses in the New River Gorge region. And Cass Scenic Railroad's popular Parade of Steam returns June 15…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV LIVING – Discovery World on Market is the product of one simple question: “How can we affect more people?” This was the question the Ross Foundation was asking in 2018 as the organization looked at its charitable investments in the Mid-Ohio Valley. Doors officially opened to the public last year to the one-of-a kind, hands-on experience children's museum. Located in Downtown Parkersburg, Discovery World is designed primarily for ages 0–10 with a focus on playing and growing together with family and friends. The 30,000-square-foot facility is organized by adventure area with an emphasis on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) activities. The opening of the children's museum has had a significant impact on visitation on the Parkersburg area, according to Mark Lewis, executive director of the Greater Parkersburg Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We are ecstatic over the success that Discovery World on Market has seen in its first year of operation,” Lewis said. “Not only has Discovery World on Market introduced many thousands of new visitors to Parkersburg, but pairing a visit to Discovery World with our other family-friendly attraction, Blennerhassett Island State Park, provides a great weekend getaway for families with young children.” Read more: https://wvliving.com/discovery-world-on-market-is-a-project-from-the-heart/ #2 – From LOOTPRESS – The West Virginia Hive, the entrepreneurship program of the New River Gorge Regional Development Authority, has announced a regional initiative to improve customer service among frontline businesses. Judy Moore, executive director of the WV Hive and deputy director of NRGRDA, said the WV Hive is partnering with regional chambers of commerce, convention and visitor bureaus, business leaders and others to promote the March 25-26 training sessions, titled “Growing Your Business Through a Culture of Service.” “Every dollar people spend in our region and every person who decides to relocate here or return for more visits is an economic multiplier for our community and economic betterment,” Moore said. The training session will kick off March 25-26 with a customized and personalized training workshop at the Tamarack Conference Center. The training session – valued at $1,500 – is available to registrants at only $50 per person, plus taxes and fees (including snacks, beverages and lunch) thanks to the support of the WV Hive. Register to attend here. Learn more: https://www.lootpress.com/west-virginia-hive-launches-regional-culture-of-service-mission/ #3 – From LOOTPRESS – Train lovers, save the date. On May 15-19, 2024, the Capital City will host the USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships. This will be the first of a series of yearly championships as part of the USA Cycling national event expected to take place until 2028. Charleston Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin said that the rural, rugged landscape the Mountain State has to offer is what has gotten quite the draw over the last several years. “They call us the mountain state for a reason, we have more trees than we do people, but by the way, that is what is attractive to this organization, the terrain that we have, our beautiful scenery that we have,” said Goodwin. The event will draw in national elite cyclists, from Olympians to World Tour professionals alike, as well as up-and-coming and rising stars in the cycling community, and just two months ahead of the Summer Olympic Games. The cyclists will compete in the professional Road Race, Time Trial and Criterium race categories. The development office has had 57 leads and prospects and completed over 142 project follow-ups over the last year, said Wood County Development Executive Director Lindsey Piersol. One example she cited was West Virginia University at Parkersburg and the Ross Foundation purchasing the former Ohio Valley College campus to create the WVU-P Technology Center. The site will focus on degrees in computer science, computer information technology, bachelor of applied technology and cybersecurity and networking as well as growth in mechanical engineering. The college hopes to place 25 technology based incubators at the facility. Piersol mentioned job growth at Mister Bee Potato Chips and Fontaine Modification. She also brought up the new Discovery World Museum in downtown Parkersburg, which has had over 37,000 guests come in since opening in April. Small businesses are the backbone of the local economy. “For every dollar spent in the community, 80 cents stays within a local business,” Piersol said. Wilka Roig brings a broad perspective to her work in end-of-life wellness as a transpersonal psychologist, death doula, grief counsellor, dream worker, ordained minister, educator and facilitator. She holds a MA in Transpersonal Psychology and has trained with Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés in Archetypal and Cross-Cultural Psychology, and with Dr. Gabor Maté in Compassionate Inquiry. We discuss the emerging role of the death doula and the overarching attitude towards death in Western culture. We consider how people come to work with a death doula, what may happen during the death transition and how preparing well for death actually enriches life. We also discuss how a person's beliefs might inform their relationship to death and the knowing that guides the facilitation of transition. Wilka invites us to broaden our relationship to transitions, and emphasises living fully and dying gracefully. She explains how death is happening at many levels, much of the time, and how grief can be dealt with wisely. We also discuss death denial, how dreams inform life, altered states, and the possibilities for integrating Curanderismo, Tibetan Buddhism and other approaches to the death process. Ultimately, Wilka provides us with an expansive and integrative view of what a death doula is and can be.Wilka is president of the Elisabeth Kübler-Ross Foundation branch in Central Mexico, deputy director of education of EKR Foundation Global, end-of-life doula educator and advisor of the International End of Life Doula Association, curriculum coordinator for the International Study of the Institute for the Study of Birth, Breath and Death, and Advisory Council member of Beautiful Dying Expo. She is also an affiliate of Death Cafe, and administrator of Death Café Mexico. Wilka additionally apprentices with medicine women in Mexico, where she resides, and trains in Curanderismo and Equine & Nature Therapies. www.wilkaroig.comLiked what you heard? I met Ken Ross through our mutual friend, Dianne. Ken is a famous photographer having shot everything and everyone in over 101 countries. Please see his magnificent work here... https://www.kenrossphotography.com/ He is also the president and founder of the Elisabeth Kübler Ross Foundation for his mother, Dr. Elisabeth Kübler Ross. Please read more about her and her prolific works here... https://www.ekrfoundation.org/ Hers is the pioneering mind that opened the public dialogue on death and dying. Elisabeth was one of the first if not THE first champion for how are dying are treated. Elisabeth believed people should be treated, families should be treated, not just the disease. When we met, Ken had no idea how important that meeting was. His mother's work was instrumental in my grieving not only my father's death but the years of his illness. It took me many years to grieve my father. In some ways I still do, but her words have always comforted me. Even more wonderful, Ken asked me to become a Global Ambassador for The Elisabeth Kübler Ross Foundation. It is one of the greatest honors of my life. Here is Ken Ross...
A statewide moratorium on evictions has been extended through July due to the pandemic. For some, that’s still not enough time to catch up on past payments. And with expanded federal unemployment benefits set to expire at the same time, some say we're headed for a so-called “eviction cliff.” Today we find out what assistance is available to renters and homeowners right now, and whether it will be enough. Los Angeles born singer-songwriter Eva B. Ross grew up writing songs and singing in her family’s garage band. She studied singing and songwriting at Interlochen Arts and the Stanford Jazz Vocal Residency. Later at UCLA, she formed her band, Eva B. Ross Foundation and independently set out on a European tour in the summer of 2014. In 2015, she released her first independent single "Nick's House" and in 2017, she won UCLA's Spring Sing with her original composition, "Chicago". Past recipients of the award include Sara Bareilles and Maroon 5. She has twice been featured as a vocalist on WDCB 90.9 FM’s “Chicago Jazz Live” and she is currently working on her debut EP, which will be co-produced by Grammy-winning producer Justin Niebank and Emmy-winning producer, Steve Rashid. The NaveBlues is a band on a mission. It is trying to bridge the gaps among three musical genres - the blues, rock, indie music to make the music speak your language, whoever you are. One of their core elements is the harmonica, which is essential to the mood of the lyrics and the ambiance of the space you are in when listening to the music. The band was formed in Norway but it integrates international influences into their music while keeping the common underlying messaging of Blues while surfacing more complexity with their storytelling. The band’s stories range across ghosts , love with misunderstandings, duty and inspiration, and frustration and adventure. NaveBlues does more than just sing a song. It wants you to understand the story and the emotion buried inside.
