Around 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 18, 2008, according to April Lewis, intruders broke in to her home in Columbus, Ohio twin 17-year-old sons, Dennis and Derris. They held April at gunpoint, ransacked the home, then fatally shot her 17-year-old son Dennis. Prosecutors said that Dennis was killed by his identical twin brother Derris, jealous that his twin had more money than he did, and a car. Both twins were model students and devoted to each other. In March 2009, of the following year, Derris Lewis went on trial for murder, but after a juror needed to be excused during deliberations and no alternate jurors were available, the judge declared a mistrial. Then on Aug. 6, 2009, all charges against Lewis were dismissed after what prosecutors claimed was a bloody palm print on the wall of the Lewis home turned out not to exist at all, and Derris Lewis was released after being in custody for 18 months. He was awarded $950,000 compensation by the city of Columbus, Ohio. This episode contains testimony from Derris's girlfriend, Kristian Holloway, about Derris's personality, and the night in question. She calls him a "goody two-shoes" who dearly loved his brother.

Given the statistics that most of violent crime is perpetrated by someone the victim knows, it's no surprise that Columbus, Ohio investigators focused on the family when Dennis Lewis was shot to death during a home invasion that appeared to be an inside job. Their suspect? Dennis' identical twin brother Derris Lewis. What is a surprise is that those investigators came to that conclusion despite, Derris's cooperation with the investigation and a rock solid alibi corroborated by multiple people. This week's Court TV Podcast tells the story of Derris and Dennis Lewis in an audio version of the Court TV Original production Someone They Knew with Tamron Hall. Facing a terminal cancer diagnosis, Karen Derris—professor, mother, and Buddhist practitioner—instinctually turned to books. By rereading ancient Buddhist stories with fresh questions and a new purpose in mind, she discovered evolving ways to make them immediate and real. Storied Companions interweaves Karen's memoir of her lived experiences of trauma and terminal illness with stories from Buddhist literary traditions, sharing with the reader how she found ways to live fully even with the reality that she won't live as long as she needs—or wants. Using her knowledge, practice, and imagination, Karen illustrates how placing yourself within narratives can turn them from distant and static sources into companions, and from companions into guides. Reading along with her, you'll realize how this practice of reading and these ancient narratives can help us come to terms with impermanence, develop empathy and compassion, and realize our own interconnectedness. Higgins began his career in public service as a journalist before becoming the youngest mayoral press secretary in New York City at 26, where he managed the global media response to the September 11th terrorist attacks. He became one of the first employees – and ultimately Chief Operating Officer – of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, the federally funded government agency created to plan the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site. Higgins helped organize the largest international design competition in history culminating in Reflecting Absence, the September 11th National Memorial, and the development of the 1,776-feet-tall One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the northern hemisphere. Higgins co-founded New York City-based RSE Ventures in 2012, amassing a multi-billion-dollar investment portfolio of leading brands across sports and entertainment, media and marketing, consumer and technology industries – including several of Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies. RSE has successfully backed many challenger brands from inception, including RESY, an Open Table competitor that American Express acquired in 2019; the world's premier drone racing circuit, the Drone Racing League; and the International Champions Cup, the largest privately owned soccer tournament featuring Europe's top clubs. Higgins is also co-owner of VaynerMedia, founded by digital marketing expert Gary Vaynerchuk, and a partner in an early-stage venture fund Vayner/RSE. In 2013, Higgins co-founded Derris, a brand strategy and communications firm that has helped grow many leading brands such as Warby Parker and Glossier. In 2016, he broadened RSE's investment focus to rapidly expanding fine dining and fast-casual concepts, including David Chang's Momofuku and Fuku, Milk Bar, &pizza and Bluestone Lane. Higgins received his BA in political science from Queens College and his JD from Fordham Law, where he was a member of the Fordham Law Review. He was named a Top 40 Under 40 executive by Crain's New York and by Sports Business Journal. In 2019, Higgins received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor – joining the ranks of seven former U.S. presidents, Nobel Prize winners, and others who have made it their mission to share their knowledge, compassion, and generosity with those less fortunate. He is a longstanding board member of Autism Speaks. #ThisWeekWithSabir --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sabir-semerkant/support
Thank you for listening to this episode. We hope you enjoy it! A note about this week's episode: We sat down with Stevie before the CoronaVirus shut down Broadway and you'll notice that our conversation reflects that. We are sad to hear that Broadway has been shut down through April 12, 2020 but we know this decision has been made for the health and wellness of the entire Broadway community, as well as New York City; and for that we are grateful. That being said, we hope that when Broadway does reopen, you'll be able to support these New York shows, like Beetlejuice! Stevie Coleman is an Account Executive at SpotCo, a leading advertising and marketing agency that specializes in entertainment. In her role, she facilitates internal and external communications for Broadway shows like Beetlejuice, off-Broadway shows like Trevor, and institutions like Lincoln Center Theater and Audible. Favorite projects during her time at SpotCo include the 2019 Tony Campaign for the Ferryman and Beetlejuice’s 31 consecutive days of fan activations during the month of October 2019. Prior to joining the agency, she held positions at Carolina Performing Arts, Derris brand consultancy, and Bronze Magazine. Outside of the office, Stevie takes in shows for both business and pleasure. In the future, she aspires to produce theater that tells meaningful, inclusive, and original stories that both illuminate and celebrate our differences. Learn more about Stevie and her projects! STOP PLAYING SMALL. So often we are afraid to go all in. Whether it’s in a relationship, in business, or in an investment, the fear of failure keeps us from fully committing. What a mistake. I’ve had to learn to love failure. I have to consciously tell my brain, “You’re going to fail. And it’s going to be ok.” Take the leap. Make the commitment. Dare to take a stand. If we’re not failing, we are staying too safe. And you won’t grow unless you are constantly making yourself uncomfortable. On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I dive deep into the idea of going all in when the time is right with one of the most successful investors in the world: Matt Higgins. Matt Higgins is a proven operator, investor and business builder with a knack for helping founders at pivotal growth moments achieve breakout success. He serves as CEO of RSE Ventures, a private firm that incubates and invests in companies across sports and entertainment, food and lifestyle, media and marketing, and technology. Higgins co-founded RSE with Miami Dolphins owner, Stephen M. Ross, the most prominent private developer in the U.S. and a serial entrepreneur. Together Higgins and Ross have helped build enterprises from scratch, including the largest privately owned soccer tournament in the world (International Champions Cup) and leading brand strategy and communications agency Derris. Matt didn’t graduate from high school. He came from a humble beginning but never let that hold him back from getting where he is today. He says that when you do things your own way and you start with a blank page, it’s going to be a lonely journey. You have to trust yourself and be careful about the advice that you take. So get ready to learn what makes Matt a great investor and why certain businesses are winners on Episode 727. Some Questions I Ask: How did you start this business-building fund? (7:00) What are the characteristics of the people you invest in that made them stand out? (9:45) If the product is average but the person is incredible, can there be a massive business? (19:00) What’s the biggest lesson your mom taught you? (44:00) What’s your greatest fear? (46:00) What’s the thing you’re most proud of? (53:00) In This Episode You Will Learn: The two things you need to be a great business leader (10:00) The question Matt asks himself before he invests in a company (12:00) The story of Matt’s first investment (14:00) Matt’s advice for people who are playing small (22:00) Matt’s biggest regrets in business (23:00) What do you do when you go all in but then you fail? (24:00) About Matt’s surprising backstory (31:00) The one thing Matt thought about when he was diagnosed with cancer (51:00)
