The Royal Highland Show is such an inspirational and vibrant event it was wonderful to be part of it. Our panel session looked at what it's like for small producers to get their products on to supermarket shelves. We welcomed back some previous Scran alumni Kim Cameron of Jam Bothy and Gin Bothy, and Tim Chisholm of Buck and Birch. The 240th Royal Highland Show is taking place just outside Edinburgh, and more than 200,000 people expected to attend over the 4 days of the show. We hear from some of the breeders showing cattle at the show.In 2022, the UK grew 162,000 tonnes of lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, sweet peppers and celery - worth more than 200 million pounds. This time of year is normally peak salad season, but the months of rain and below average temperatures have been bad news for the country's salad growers. We find out what that means for both field crops and those grown in glasshouses. An e-coli outbreak across the UK has been traced back to some salad leaves, which were used in a wide range of food, including sandwiches and wraps. The Food Standards Agency has not been able to say whether those leaves came from UK farms, or were imported. We ask what it means for farmers. And could the plant breeding achievements of the Green Revolution be started again from scratch? That's the hope of scientists at the John Innes Centre, who say modern commercial varieties of wheat used by farmers could be replaced with better ones, using wheat lines collected a century ago. This week along with a few mates, Scott, Derek and Andrew, all of whom are fellow commentators at the Royal Highland Show, we roll out the Christmas drink and have a laugh, as well as some serious chat. We start by mentioning a few great folks that the industry has lost over the past year. When we get to big Doddie it opens up a discussion about the fact that many great rugby players were and are farmers. A random chat about using crossbred rams leaves us divided although the concept Scott raises of producing a Wagyu type lamb does have its merits. We then dissect some farm diversification schemes until that chat morphs into other hilarity, and much editing! .
This week Liz is chatting to one of our EquiTeam members Jen Craig about her rather special and very hot Ginger Ninja, Troy. Troy came into Jen's life at just a week old and despite his hot and slightly unpredictable nature, Jen had high hopes for her special boy. After a make or break trip to EquiTeam's Confidence Camp in 2017 helped Jen re-define who was in charge in their relationship, she set herself the goal of getting him to the Royal Highland Show for the HOYS Working Hunter qualifiers. Sadly a bout of laminitis and a subsequent diagnosis of EMS meant Jen had to re-evaluate what her goals were and after a long recovery and rehabilitation period Jen set about planning what was next for her and Troy. She chats about how much of a loss it was to have to give up on her showing goals but also how much fun they have had setting some new goals, culminating in them both qualifying for the Riding Club Dressage Championships with 74% and a win in a huge class of 50 other horses. Jen's drive, motivation and positive attitude is inspirational. From 5am alarm calls to juggling a full-time job and a young family, she is sets us all a great example of how if something is important enough to you, you make it happen. www.equiteam.co.uk
