Star Trek: Lower Decks – Season 1 Episode 7 – Much Ado About Boimler We’re back with the seventh episode of Lower Decks, titled Much Ado About Boimler. This episode was written by Story Editor M. Willis and directed by Post-Supervising Director Barry J. Kelly, who also directed S1E1 Second Contact and S1E4 Moist Vessel. Ensign Beckett Mariner – What’s her deal? The Captain, First Officer, and Chief of Security go on a covert mission, similar to the one Picard, Crusher, and Worf go on in the TNG episode Chain of Command. Edward Jellico isn’t the “sub” captain this time. Instead, the Cerritos gets Captain Amina Ramsey, a classmate of Mariner’s. She wants Mariner as her first officer during this mission, which Beckett accepts. Unfortunately, Mariner is bungling at every turn. Ramsey figures out that Mariner is taking a dive, an old boxing term given when a fighter intentionally loses, which is to say that she is intentionally performing badly. We still don’t know what Mariner’s deal is. We know she has been demoted and doesn’t want command, but we don’t know why, other than she finds it boring. However, in times of crisis, she excels. I hope we learn the story behind her actions will finally get explained, and that she will finally figure things out once and for all. Speaking of Boimler – You hardly notice it! OK, that’s not true. Boimler plays a big part in the B plot this week. He undergoes a transporter malfunction that causes him to hum at a high pitch and glow. This sends him to The Farm via a Division 14 ship, the USS Osler. We meet a creepy Edosian officer that we never get a name for, voiced by Fred Tatasciore, who normally voices Shax, but Shax didn’t have any lines this week. Joining him are Tendi, who also created an unusual dog that needed to go to The Farm as well. I didn’t know it at the time, but kudos to Nolan North, who plays the role of the command ensign who is experiencing accelerated growth on one side, and reverse aging on the other. We meet a character in a Pike chair, two characters mixed up in a transporter accident, and Anthony, who may be the offspring from the Janeway and Paris’ jump to Warp 10. A really good episode! I don’t know if this was the best episode of the season, but it was certainly the best in a while. It didn’t go so heavy on the references this time, which we both appreciated. Instead, they were more subtle. Welcome to our Rebinge of Star Trek DS9: Dax DS9’s seventh episode, entitled Dax, gives us a little insight into Trill life. Something from Curzon Dax’s past comes back to haunt Jadzia when someone arrives at the station to hold her accountable for some major crimes. The visitor arrests Jadzia and tries to steal her away quietly, but our trusty crew catches them in the act and Jadzia must endure a formal Bajoran hearing to determine if she’ll have to stand trial for Curzon’s past. Dax: Guilty or Innocent? When Ilon Tandro (also known as Phoebe’s father-in-law) turns up with an extradition order, Jadzia suddenly clams up. This dude is throwing around claims of murder and wants Jadzia to pay for the crimes committed by Curzon Dax against Ilon’s father. Sisko knows none of it is true. Odo is pretty sure it’s all true. And Jadzia isn’t saying anything. Odo heads off to Klaestron to do a little investigating and he finds the dead guy’s widow…played by none other than the amazing Fionnula Flanagan! Listen in to hear us discuss some more creeping by Julian, living with lifetimes of regret, talking through a curio cabinet, Data’s mom and oh yeah, singing poo. (Not a typo.) What’s this rebinge thing? It’s a re-watch of a thing you’ve already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. Listen to our intro episode if you want to know a little more about us. But I stuck with it and my body adapted and eventually started to use the nutrients I was giving it..... Sign us up!But wait, there's more: Joining us for our introduction to "Sports Night" is Sorkin superfan Walt Mossberg — although he may be better known as the former Personal Technology columnist for the Wall Street Journal who co-founded AllThingsD and Recode, where Eric now works. For the purposes of this discussion, we watched five episodes of "Sports Night," chosen from across its two-year run on ABC. Star Trek: Discovery – S1E7 – Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad On this episode of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Adam and I discuss Season 1 Episode 7, titled Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad. This episode marks the return of another TOS figure, Harry Mudd. Man, Mudd can hold a grudge, can’t he? In this episode, we see the Discovery in a 30-minute time loop. This is a Trek trope. We’ve seen a similar thing in other episodes of Star Trek, the most notable being the classic TNG Season 5 episode, “Cause and Effect”. Unlike that episode, we see a time loop created intentionally, with Mudd and Stamets, who still seems a bit acid trippy this episode :-), retaining the awareness of what happened in previous time loops. Mudd, he sure can hold a grudge!!! It’s stated at one point that Mudd killed Lorca 53 times, and I think he kills him a few more! Also unlike the TNG episode, we see them not get repetitious. We seem to some of the loops, while others are mentioned in passing, and others we don’t see. I think we see the first loop, but then many more loops happen before the next one. This continues on. Stella!!! I didn’t say too much about this during the episode, but I was a little disappointed with Stella. She seemed a lot nicer, younger and better looking than the Stella-bot we see in TOS. It didn’t seem too much of a punishment for Mudd, and certainly not what he deserved for what he had done. I thought it led to a weak ending. The writers also seemed to make the characters a little too aware in the last couple of loops, and I thought it was a big stretch that Stamets could have conveyed everything going on to each major character in a believable way. However, on a second watch, both elements bothered me a lot less, and I just enjoyed it for what it was. What is the magic to make the sanest man go mad? I didn’t mention this on the podcast since I screwed up the meaning of the episode with the next one (cue TOS Incorrect! sound effect!!!), but the title of this episode comes from Homer’s The Iliad. Here’s the quote: “…There is the heat of Love, the pulsing rush of Longing, the lover’s whisper, irresistible—magic to make the sanest man go mad.” Disco! Disco duck!!! Duck, it’s disco!!! So Star Trek: Discovery earned a bit of those Disco shirts, featuring Wyclef Jean’s re-sampling of The BeeGees’ Staying Alive, which probably is the cornerstone of disco music. And you can buy your own Disco shirt now!!! Oh well, I had hoped we’d see an end to that, but I guess not. In summary, we both thought this was a fun episode to watch, even with its flaws, and can’t wait for next week! Send in your feedback! Want to participate? Join our Facebook group! Your road map to this week's entertainment-themed podcast:00:33 Master of None: Terri tends to like every other episode of this show, and this week's "Amarsi Un Po" was the "nope" after the "yes!" of last week's. (But the aerial footage of Manhattan at night was spectacular.)11:52 The West Wing: "The U.S. Poet Laureate" is also not one of Terri's faves, but the accompanying West Wing Weekly podcast delivered the guests she'd been hoping to hear from. Also mentioned: TV Avalanche with guest Linda Holmes and Little House on the Podcast.23:35 Challenge Round: Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip: Taking off from the "unwise responses to criticism" theme on West Wing, Terri challenged Catherine to watch the pilot of Sorkin's follow-up show. Catherine liked its casting and snappy dialogue, but that wasn't enough to save this one-season show. For next week, Catherine challenged Terri to watch two episodes of another behind-the-scenes show from 2006: 30 Rock ("Tracy vs. Conan," S1E7, and "Dealbreakers Talk Show #0001," S4E7).
