This week's episode, "Choose Your Pain", engages in a time-honored "Trek" tradition: the Captain takes a shuttle somewhere instead of his massive starship and gets captured. Who could've seen that coming? What will be worse for Lorca: Klingon torture or sharing a cell with one Harcourt Fenton Mudd? Also this week: the big F, Tippecanoe, and more multi-part chat! Good news for Tilly apologists (like M. Foss): Ashley is warming up to everyone's favorite cadet. Bad news for fans of Saru (like M. Foss): we can't say the same about everyone's favorite Kelpian. Ashley still hates him. Also bad news for anyone who has ever seen The Original Series (like M. Foss): Ashley is all in on her choice of Harcourt Fenton Mudd as her favorite Star Trek character so far. But all these news items come with…you guessed it…CONTEXT. Join us to learn all about that context and much, much more. For funsies, here's an article you might enjoy about blasting past Star Trek's final frontier: swear words on the show. PJ, Mat and Eliot join Captain Lorca as he gets taken prisoner by Klingons, and meets a classic Star Trek character, Harcourt Fenton Mudd! Plus! We love the Discovery cast. Especially Wilson Cruz. He's dreamy. Look, we might be crushing slightly on Wilson Cruz. And really, can you blame us? Sarah & Joe boldly go where they've planned to go before, but never quite got around to it, with It Happened One Year's look at the original Star Trek series, specifically the season two episode "I, Mudd," airing November 3rd, 1967! After an intro by friend of the show Lana Cooper, the hosts touch on what was skipped by season one's 1994 omission of Generations and The Next Generation finale, their respective (and somewhat limited) personal exposure to the film and TV franchise, and discuss just how misogynistic (or not?) the show was in its early days. There's also a quick look at the character history of Harcourt Fenton Mudd (and his portrayer, Roger C. Carmel, with his epic mustache), and also another surprising conversation around the tight-pants epidemic prevalent on Friday night television in '67.
As we return to the world of Star Trek, we tackle a pair of episodes that truly represent the highs and lows of this series, as we experience some top flight Shatner-brand hambone acting, meet a swarthy Irish pimp, and take note of more than a few red flags about how early ST treated its women characters. In this episode, we discuss "Mudd's Women". Dana and Dan talk about one of the most iconic characters in the original series, Harcourt Fenton Mudd. The guys also delve into the meaning of "cargo" and why NBC producers at the time described the women in the episode as "space hookers". And what's up with that stain on the carpet on the bridge in front of the captain's chair? Please send your comments, questions, and suggestions to damnitjimpodcast@gmail.com. When an android posing as a crewman hijacks the Enterprise to an uncharted planet, Captain Kirk discovers the true culprit to be his old nemesis, Harry Mudd. His plan: to strand Kirk and his crew on the planet, where they will be served by a race of androids, while he escapes to his freedom on the Enterprise. But Mudd's plan backfires when the androids turn on him and decide to leave him behind with the rest of Kirk's crew, while they set out across the galaxy to conquer the human race and "protect" mankind from itself. The stakes are indeed high in "I, Mudd," which is a stark contrast to the more lighthearted, fun and madcap tone that permeates it. It's a total departure from anything ever attempted before on "Star Trek," but the producers and cast members make it work by leaning into the farce of it all and running with it. Everyone is clearly having a ball, especially William Shatner and returning cast member Roger C. Carmel as Harcourt Fenton Mudd. This week on Episode 516 of Priority One: that's a wrap on filming for season one of Strange New Worlds, details on Trek panels for Comic-Con@Home, and Lower Decks beams back onto screens next month! In gaming news, Harcourt Fenton Mudd is at it again, scouring the galaxy to bring you deals and gear from across time itself, and the newest patch to Star Trek Fleet Command brings a commanding presence to the game. This week's Community Question is: What is the next Star Trek Online event reward you would like to be made available for purchase? Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! TREK IT OUT Edited by Thomas Reynolds Strange New Worlds Goes To Wrap 1 By Cat Hough Last week, Anson Mount tweeted that filming for the last episode of Season 1 for Strange New Worlds has started. He also hinted at some surprises in store, saying, “old school fans are going to [be] VERY excited to see what we're trying to pull off with this one. Getting to do many things I've never attempted as an actor. So much fun!" https://twitter.com/ansonmount/status/1412781659376787459?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1412781659376787459%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ffilmdaily.co%2Fobsessions%2Fstar-trek%2Fstrange-new-worlds%2F No release date has been announced for Strange New Worlds, but to recap what we do know about it: first, it is more episodic than Discovery or Picard. Second, it will likely have a more classic Original Series theme and look. Showrunner Akiva Goldsman said it's important to keep continuity with The Original Series, while also distinguishing Strange New Worlds as its own show. Can't even tell the difference. Image: ViacomCBS. Goldsman described it to The Hollywood Reporter saying, “Remember the Enterprise existed as a little piece of [the show Discovery] but now is its own object. When you close your eyes and think of the key sets and situations that you think of in The Original Series, that's what we're looking to do." We may possibly get more information during Comic-Con@Home since a Star Trek Universe panel has been announced–though my best guess will be sometime in early 2022. Star Trek@Comic-Con@Home By Cat Hough Speaking of the San Diego Comic-Con–or the virtual version, Comic-Con@Home–Paramount+ announced back-to-back Star Trek panels starting Friday, July 23 at 10 a.m. PT. Paramount+'s Comic-Con panels will feature sessions with the cast and producers from Star Trek: Prodigy and Star Trek: Lower Decks. Images: ViacomCBS/Comic-Con International, via Deadline. Prodigy, the first Star Trek animated kids series [TAS doesn't count, we've been over this already–Ed.], will kick off the presentation with Lower Decks set to follow. The Prodigy presentation will be the inaugural panel for the upcoming kids series, following a crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together, while navigating a greater galaxy in search of a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered, but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents. Lower Decks voice cast members Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid and Eugene Cordero will then appear with creator Mike McMahan for an exclusive conversation and an extended look at Season 2 with Lower Decks' own Jerry O'Connell moderating the conversations. And speaking of Lower Decks… Lower Decks Season 2, Coming Through! By Rosco McQueen It's officially one month until Lower Decks returns to the screen for season two, with a very short teaser released this week. While the teaser was short, in Lower Decks fashion it was brimming with details. In the opening shot alone we saw the Cerritos alongside some Parliament-class starships, Andorian cruisers, a Maquis Raider and a couple of Daedalus-class ships, all docked at a starbase that seems inspired by the Watchtower-class from Trek-lit novels. In the teaser Mariner and Boimler crash through a space mall in a space dune buggy, and narrowly avoid some space fish people [they're not people!–Ed.] originally seen in The Next Generation. The lower deckers sport some flashy new dress uniforms, and just to add to the mix, some Commander Data collectable figurines fly out the back of the buggy. https://twitter.com/StarTrek/status/1414630633448480776?s=20 Did we miss anything? The first four Star Trek films are being re-released...this time in 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision and HDR10. What does that mean? You'll be able to make out every follicle of Ricardo Montalban's chest hair [what are you on about, dude was smoother than Michael Phelps on a Slip'n'Slide–Ed.]! Packed with extra features (much like Khan's chest) this 4-disc set doesn't have a release date yet but, we'll be sure to keep you updated! While we're talking about merch, Playmates just announced a new line of Star Trek toys coming in 2022. According to StarTrek.com, there will be a lineup of action figures and accessories from all era's of the franchise–new and old. Star Trek also gets to celebrate some recognition with five Emmy nominations this year. Discovery is up for Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup, Outstanding Period And/Or Character Makeup (Non-Prosthetic), Outstanding Sound Editing For A Comedy Or Drama Series, and Outstanding Special Visual Effects In A Single Episode. Lower Decks has been nominated for Outstanding Sound Editing For A Comedy Or Drama Series. Commanding Time In Star Trek Fleet Command By Rosco McQueen It's the best of both worlds, only this time it's part three! The third section of Star Trek Fleet Command's Next Generation arc has just landed, with Commander William T. Riker in the spotlight. Patch 32 brings with it a new officer, a new ship and, for Star Trek Online players, some familiar gameplay elements to the Kelvin Universe. “With the Enterprise-D mysteriously returned to its former glory, the time has come to find and rescue the rest of the crew and get them home to their own universe. You manage to track down Commander William Riker, who finds himself at the forefront of the Bajoran resistance against the rampant Cardassian Empire. And with the Cardassians holding many Enterprise-D crew members captive, the conflict is personal for Riker.” Amazing, The Beard actually overpowers the lens flare. Image: Scopely. Also there are some changes to the Away Team assignments. Introduced in Patch 30, this feature gives you the possibility to send officers on Assignments and receive rewards. Now the assignments are part of your daily goals, giving players the ability to gain more daily goal points and more speed ups. So in STO terms, duty officer assignments have been added to the endeavor system. Available to players in this patch is a new officer: Epic William Riker, a new ship: the Meridian, an isogen mining vessel, fifteen new missions and more.

TREK IT OUT Edited by Thomas Reynolds Paramount+, Essentially By Elio Lleo ViacomCBS continues to try luring in more subscribers, by offering up new pricing tiers and teasing a slate of new content coming out over the summer. First up: the new “low-cost” option for US subscribers, starting at $4.99. This “Essential Plan” is ad-supported, including some sports and on-demand options. However, it will no longer include local live television station programming. I swear every one of those stars is an asterisk. Image: ViacomCBS, via Deadline. Keep in mind if you already have the limited commercial plan, you won't lose any features…however, that plan will no longer be offered to new subscribers. The “Premium Plan” will cost US subscribers $9.99 a month, is commercial-free with on demand entertainment (including 4K titles), more sports, and live streaming of local stations. Trek's Prodigious New Talent By Elio Lleo On Monday, June 14, ViacomCBS dropped the cast list for Star Trek: Prodigy–the first animated show specifically geared towards children [no, TAS wasn't written for kids; we've explored that in our Patreon exclusive podcast: After Hours -Ed.]. The six main voices joining Kate Mulgrew have been announced including Jason Mantzoukas–who you might recognize from shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The League, and as the voice of the foul-mouthed Rex Splode on the Amazon animated series Invincible. Variety also shared the details about the characters including some species names, character backgrounds, and some first-look images. Aren't you a little young for nebula coffee? Image: ViacomCBS, via Variety. Romijn Charts Out Strange New Worlds By Cat Hough In a recent interview with Looper.com, Rebecca Romijn confirms what we have long suspected regarding the format and episodic nature of Strange New Worlds. She said, "it's in keeping with the original series — they're standalone episodes. It's a little bit lighter. We are visiting planets. We are visiting colonies, and we are so proud of our work so far." The show will cover ten years of missions on the Enterprise (no bloody A, B, C, or D) with Captain Pike, before Kirk takes the helm. Romijn plays first officer Number One, originally played by Majel Barrett. Whatever you've hiding, Mr. Spock, I hope you brought enough to share. Image: ViacomCBS, via Looper. No release date has yet been announced for Strange New Worlds, other than it's expected some time in 2022. But it appears that filming may be coming to a close. Romijn told Looper she was able to catch a break in filming episode seven of ten for Strange New Worlds in order to promote her new film, the safari thriller Endangered Species. Bills To Pay in Lower Decks Season 2 By Rosko McQueen It's the question that can foster debate, cause rifts in friendships, or spark outrage on social media: what's your favorite episode of Star Trek? Mike McMahon, the creator of Lower Decks was asked exactly this by the folks at IGN. Thanks to his breadth of knowledge, he had an answer for each series, while also throwing out some teasers for Lower Decks season 2. "Shades of Gray," Mariner? Really? Image: ViacomCBS, via IGN. Mike spoke about the structure of Star Trek, and the nature of standalone episodes that add to the depth of the characters–but not in a way that the audience needs a refresh at the start of each new episode. What that means for Season 2 of Lower Decks is we have the setup of the first 10 episodes. So where to from here? “These last three episodes created this crescendo of, ‘Look, this is what the show is. Let's go. And we keep that up. How does Mariner feel about Boimler taking off? How is Boimler doing on the Titan? So, [we're] still doing standalone, still episodes that feel episodic, but the characters don't forget. We haven't forgotten what we've said [in] Season 1.” That leads us to our first community question this week: What are the bills you want to see paid in Lower Decks (and Picard) seasons two? Variety also shared the details about the characters including some species names, character backgrounds, and some first-look images. Aren't you a little young for nebula coffee? She said, "it's in keeping with the original series — they're standalone episodes. It's a little bit lighter. We are visiting planets. We are visiting colonies, and we are so proud of our work so far." The show will cover ten years of missions on the Enterprise (no bloody A, B, C, or D) with Captain Pike, before Kirk takes the helm. In Star Trek gaming, we talk about Star Trek Online's Tzenkethi Lobi Bundle, the dreaded Mudd bundle of also-dread, and STO's monetization model! Then we head On Screen to watch Star Trek: Discovery's newest episode - “Die Trying” Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we'll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Week's Community Questions are: CQ: Do you think LeVar Burton should be the next host of Jeopardy? If so, did you sign the petition? If not, who should be? AND CQ: How do you feel about the selection and pricing of new STO Ships in 2020? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Where CBS All Access Measures Up We love numbers! They can tell us so much about a wide variety of topics - or nothing at all. So take this exciting adventure with us, dear listeners, as we dive into the rush of alphanumerics - Streaming numbers! This week, as they do most weeks, Business Insider ranked the top streaming shows for the week - and Star Trek: Discovery hit number 3 on that list! The ratings, provided by Parrot Analytics, placed Star Trek higher than “The Umbrella Academy” and “The Boys”, but still looking up at “Stranger Things” and “The Mandalorian”. Star Trek: Discovery's MetaCritic rating for the current season (93%) is also third on the list, topped by “The Boys” (97%) and the newest season of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” (100%). But, numbers. According to Forbes “The State Of The Streaming Wars”, CBS All Access - the streaming platform that streams all-things Star Trek - has the lowest subscribers of any premium service; And they rolled Showtime subscribers into the CBS All Access tally. Netflix tops the list with 195 million subscribers, newcomer Peacock checks in with a solid 22 million, and CBS All Access? 17.9 million subscribers. But what does all of this mean? Well, like I said in the intro - numbers can tell us so much, and at the same time so little. ViacomCBS' Plans For BIPOC Inclusion If 2020 has done anything, it's given of us all crippling anxiety - but it has also raised awareness of social injustice. This week, ViacomCBS continued to institute policies that will hopefully make Star Trek's future of inclusion and equality a reality. According to Deadline, CBS has enacted an edict that would require 50% of its reality television cast to be Black, Indigenous or People of Color - or BIPOC. Further, at least 25% of the show's development budget must be spent on BIPOC creators and producers. Why is this important? Well, most programming for the 2020-2021 season has shifted towards reality programming due to the global pandemic, and the edict brings reality television in-line with ViacomCBS' policies regarding its scripted-brethren. Back in July, ViacomCBS announced that ”The broadcaster is committing 25% of its script development budget to projects from creators, writers and producers who are Black, Indigenous and people of color. The scheme will begin with the 2021/22 development season. It is also mandating that writers' rooms for CBS shows must be staffed with a minimum of 40% BIPOC representation for the 2021/22 broadcast season. This will be increased to 50% for the 2022/23 season.” LeVar Burton - Game Show Host? Last week, Canadian born Game Show Icon Alex Trebek passed after a battle with pancreatic cancer. The 80 year-old Trebek spent 37 seasons hosting the popular trivia game show “Jeopardy”, and following his passing many were left wondering - who would replace the legendary host? While no one could truly replace Trebek, some fans had a suggestion for the vacancy - Roots, Reading Rainbow, and Star Trek star LeVar Burton! Fan Joshua Sanders started a change.org petition for the 63 year-old Burton, saying ”Between hosting 21 seasons of the educational Reading Rainbow, playing the brainiac engineer Geordi La Forge on Star Trek: the Next Generation, and filling the roll of Kunta Kinte in the ever important mini-series Roots, LeVar Burton has inspired and shaped the minds of several generations of trivia-loving nerds. This petition is to show Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. and producers Mike Richards and Harry Friedman just how much love the public has for Burton, and how much we'd all love to see him as the next host of Jeopardy!”. At the time of this writing, the petition had over 89,000 signatures, with a goal of 150,000. On November 12th, the man of the hour - LeVar Burton - tweeted about the petition, saying ”Even if nothing comes from it, I can't tell [you] much how I appreciate all y'alls love and support! Folded handsHeart suit!” https://twitter.com/levarburton/status/1326973244847624195 Brentwood Sounds like everyone loves LeVar Burton, right? WRONG. Brent Spiner HATES LeVar Burton - and after all of those evites, who can blame him? If you have no idea what I'm talking about, you're going to want to follow the link in our show notes - after you're done listening to this show of course! Spiner, and the aforementioned LeVar Burton, star in the Omeleto short film titled “Brentwood”. In the short-form comedy, Spiner plays an exaggerated version of himself - think Larry David from “Curb Your Enthusiasm” - who hates his neighbors, conventions, awards shows, podcasts, and especially LeVar Burton. There's singing, dancing, shrimp, epi-pens - and content totally inappropriate for younger audiences, so keep that in mind before watching. The twelve minute film was Directed by Sharon Everitt and written by Karen Anderson, Jeff Cosgrove and Everitt. Trek out our show notes if you want to watch the film - and trust me you want to watch the film! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmVwCcUQRjU&t=31s Star Trek Gaming News by Shane Hoover and Thomas Reynolds Shell Games: the Tzenkethi Lobi Bundle By Thomas Reynolds Bundles, bundles, bundles: if there's anything that typifies the current player experience in STO, it's the ever-expanding number of bundles for sale. By far, the majority of bundles have been available through the C-Store. Isn't it time the Lobi store got some love? Well fear not, PC captains, because the Tzenkethi are here to help. Sort of. Hooray. The limited-edition Tzenkethi Lobi Bundle will be locking its trajectory into the PC Lobi store from November 20th through the 30th. Captains who drop 1800 Lobi(!) and walk the Path of Spending will get these character-bound Bundle contents: Tzenkethi Shuk-din Escort [T6] 5 Diffusive Tetryon Weapons Console - Universal - Shared Processing Integration Tzenkethi Vanity Shield Tzenkethi Duty Officer Assignments 6 Ultimate Tech Upgrades Dread of Zen. Dread of Not-Zen. By Shane Hoover Thief. Swindler. Con man. Liar. Rogue. Yes, Harcourt Fenton Mudd has warped into the C-Store with another of his infamous Mudd's Market Choice Packs. This week's new offering is called Mudd's Choice Pack of Dread. Since we're all getting pretty familiar with the idea of Mudd's Choice Packs by now, let's just cover the essential details quickly. From the Choice Pack, you can choose any three of the following: Hur'q Vecrid Hive Dreadnought [T6] Tholian Tarantula Dreadnought [T6] Temporal Paradox Dreadnought [T6] 50 Master Keys 2 Coupons for 100% Off a T6 C-Store ship 10 Ultimate Tech Upgrades And let's not forget, those T6 Dreadnoughts are account-wide unlocks only when purchased here. If you buy the same ship with Lobi, it's a character locked ship. First, let us state something clearly - the value proposition for this bundle looks decent in the mathematics, like pretty much all of the Legendary bundles or Mudd's packs. If these choices look good to you, and you've got the disposable cash, then you probably won't get struck with buyer's remorse. Mudd's Market Now, let's talk about why we're not going to rave over another Mudd's Market bundle. Not to put too fine a point on it, 2020 has been a year of seismic change in how Star Trek Online wants you to buy starships. If I asked you how many brand new Tier 6 ships hit the C-Store for individual, non-bundle, purchase in 2020, what would you guess? If you guess more than four, you're wrong. August's Cross-Faction Support Carrier Bundle introduced the only four individually available ships new to the C-Store THIS YEAR. Now, how many new or re-modeled Tier 6 ships hit the C-Store this year locked into a bundle of $60 or $120? The correct answer, I believe, is seven ships. For bonus points, how many new T6 ships arrived via Lockbox or Promotional box in 2020? We count five of those. Which brings us back to the topic at hand… Mudd's Market, where another deal slides in at $295 “regular price” for three ships. This is the third Mudd's Choice pack of 2020. A few other ships appeared solo in Mudd's Market as well. This takes us to something like 23 out of 27 ships in 2020 not available for single purchase via Zen. It seems painfully clear that the direction of monetization in Star Trek Online has taken a drastic turn towards high stakes purchases. So we don't think it's just a question of whether there's value in these Bundles. Clearly there is. But what has happened to the offerings for lower stakes, more casual players? We all want to enjoy the amazing work of STO's talented ship artists and ship designers. It shouldn't be monetized so far out of reach. And for the love of the Great Bird, don't even mention the Reputation Tier 5 buyout, or we're going to lose it over here. Disco & Dungeons & Dragons By Shane Hoover There was also some lighthearted Star Trek related gaming news this past week. Anthony Rapp, Discovery's Paul Stamets, tweeted out a #NerdAlert on the 9th. In the tweet, Rapp declared that “there's a small but mighty group of Star Trek Discovery cast members who've begun a Dungeons and Dragons campaign.” . Rapp himself is apparently playing a half-elf Druid, even going so far as sharing a screenshot of his character sheet. The gaming group on-set is composed of the DM, Mary Wise's husband Noah, plus Rapp and four fellow castmates. In the ensuing Twitter discussion, Rapp named party members as Blu del Barrio (playing tiefling wizard Bink), Ian Alexander (playing elf bard Vyvee), and Emily Coutts (playing half-elf cleric Airlia). The final member of the party is unnamed, but Rapp says they're playing a Goliath ranger. When asked about playing a Star Trek Adventures tabletop campaign, Anthony replied, “We get to play Star Trek for a living. It's a very very very pleasurable living! But DnD is our escape” https://twitter.com/albinokid/status/1325856796007948292 Don't Say the Titan's Back, It's Been Here For Years By Thomas Reynolds Writer's note: Cryptic made the following announcement on November 18th, after we recorded everything you just heard. So if this seems out of left field, after we just went off about Cryptic not releasing new ships...well, it is. Such is life. Listeners may remember that, back in episode 482, associate producer Thomas declared that STO would have a T6 Luna-class vessel by the end of 2020. It'd be the perfect time, with an appearance in Lower Decks and the long-standing player demand for such a ship. And wouldn't you know it: next week, we're getting just that. Who was right? Yes, Thomas was right. Arriving on PC on November 20th, the Titan-class Science Destroyer [T6] offers a compelling platform for pewpewing new life and new civilizations. Like the Dyson destroyers before it, the Titan-class toggles between Science and Tactical modes, reflecting its dual roles in exploration and combat. It also comes with the Opening Salvo universal console, which fires variable projectiles depending on your ship's current mode (like the Arbiter's V.A.T.A. console). The projectiles do kinetic damage in both modes, but in default (Science) mode they temporarily disable all of the target's subsystems. Flipped to Tactical, the salvo will do kinetic AoE and inflict a damage resistance debuff instead. Finally, the Opening Salvo console boosts EPG and weapon specialization so it'll be a welcome addition whatever mode, or mood, you're in. As a T6 ship, the Titan-class also features the “It's Another Enterprise” starship trait. When slotted, activating your captain's Fleet ability will summon your faction's flagship for temporary assistance. This update also introduces a Fleet T6 version of the Titan, and gives the existing Luna-class model a hi-fi redo like those seen in the Ship of the Line bundles.

At the time of this writing, the petition had over 89,000 signatures, with a goal of 150,000. On November 12th, the man of the hour - LeVar Burton - tweeted about the petition, saying ”Even if nothing comes from it, I can’t tell [you] much how I appreciate all y’alls love and support! Folded handsHeart suit!” https://twitter.com/levarburton/status/1326973244847624195 Brentwood Sounds like everyone loves LeVar Burton, right? WRONG. Brent Spiner HATES LeVar Burton - and after all of those evites, who can blame him? If you have no idea what I’m talking about, you’re going to want to follow the link in our show notes - after you're done listening to this show of course! There’s singing, dancing, shrimp, epi-pens - and content totally inappropriate for younger audiences, so keep that in mind before watching. The twelve minute film was Directed by Sharon Everitt and written by Karen Anderson, Jeff Cosgrove and Everitt. Trek out our show notes if you want to watch the film - and trust me you want to watch the film! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmVwCcUQRjU&t=31s Star Trek Gaming News by Shane Hoover and Thomas Reynolds Shell Games: the Tzenkethi Lobi Bundle By Thomas Reynolds Bundles, bundles, bundles: if there’s anything that typifies the current player experience in STO, it’s the ever-expanding number of bundles for sale. By far, the majority of bundles have been available through the C-Store. Isn’t it time the Lobi store got some love? Swindler. Con man. Liar. Rogue. Yes, Harcourt Fenton Mudd has warped into the C-Store with another of his infamous Mudd’s Market Choice Packs. This week’s new offering is called Mudd’s Choice Pack of Dread. Since we’re all getting pretty familiar with the idea of Mudd’s Choice Packs by now, let’s just cover the essential details quickly. From the Choice Pack, you can choose any three of the following: Hur’q Vecrid Hive Dreadnought [T6] Tholian Tarantula Dreadnought [T6] Temporal Paradox Dreadnought [T6] 50 Master Keys 2 Coupons for 100% Off a T6 C-Store ship 10 Ultimate Tech Upgrades And let’s not forget, those T6 Dreadnoughts are account-wide unlocks only when purchased here. If you buy the same ship with Lobi, it’s a character locked ship. First, let us state something clearly - the value proposition for this bundle looks decent in the mathematics, like pretty much all of the Legendary bundles or Mudd’s packs. If these choices look good to you, and you’ve got the disposable cash, then you probably won’t get struck with buyer’s remorse. Mudd's Market Now, let’s talk about why we’re not going to rave over another Mudd’s Market bundle. Not to put too fine a point on it, 2020 has been a year of seismic change in how Star Trek Online wants you to buy starships. If I asked you how many brand new Tier 6 ships hit the C-Store for individual, non-bundle, purchase in 2020, what would you guess? If you guess more than four, you’re wrong. August’s Cross-Faction Support Carrier Bundle introduced the only four individually available ships new to the C-Store THIS YEAR. Which brings us back to the topic at hand… Mudd’s Market, where another deal slides in at $295 “regular price” for three ships. This is the third Mudd’s Choice pack of 2020. A few other ships appeared solo in Mudd’s Market as well. This takes us to something like 23 out of 27 ships in 2020 not available for single purchase via Zen. It seems painfully clear that the direction of monetization in Star Trek Online has taken a drastic turn towards high stakes purchases. So we don’t think it’s just a question of whether there’s value in these Bundles. Clearly there is. But what has happened to the offerings for lower stakes, more casual players? We all want to enjoy the amazing work of STO’s talented ship artists and ship designers. It shouldn’t be monetized so far out of reach. And for the love of the Great Bird, don’t even mention the Reputation Tier 5 buyout, or we’re going to lose it over here. Disco & Dungeons & Dragons By Shane Hoover There was also some lighthearted Star Trek related gaming news this past week. Anthony Rapp, Discovery’s Paul Stamets, tweeted out a #NerdAlert on the 9th. In the tweet, Rapp declared that “there’s a small but mighty group of Star Trek Discovery cast members who’ve begun a Dungeons and Dragons campaign.” . Rapp himself is apparently playing a half-elf Druid, even going so far as sharing a screenshot of his character sheet. The gaming group on-set is composed of the DM, Mary Wise’s husband Noah, plus Rapp and four fellow castmates. In the ensuing Twitter discussion, Rapp named party members as Blu del Barrio (playing tiefling wizard Bink), Ian Alexander (playing elf bard Vyvee), and Emily Coutts (playing half-elf cleric Airlia). The final member of the party is unnamed, but Rapp says they’re playing a Goliath ranger. When asked about playing a Star Trek Adventures tabletop campaign, Anthony replied, “We get to play Star Trek for a living. It’s a very very very pleasurable living! But DnD is our escape” https://twitter.com/albinokid/status/1325856796007948292 Don’t Say the Titan’s Back, It’s Been Here For Years By Thomas Reynolds Writer’s note: Cryptic made the following announcement on November 18th, after we recorded everything you just heard. So if this seems out of left field, after we just went off about Cryptic not releasing new ships...well, it is. Such is life. Listeners may remember that, back in episode 482, associate producer Thomas declared that STO would have a T6 Luna-class vessel by the end of 2020. It’d be the perfect time, with an appearance in Lower Decks and the long-standing player demand for such a ship. And wouldn’t you know it: next week, we’re getting just that. It also comes with the Opening Salvo universal console, which fires variable projectiles depending on your ship’s current mode (like the Arbiter’s V.A.T.A. console). The projectiles do kinetic damage in both modes, but in default (Science) mode they temporarily disable all of the target’s subsystems. Flipped to Tactical, the salvo will do kinetic AoE and inflict a damage resistance debuff instead. Finally, the Opening Salvo console boosts EPG and weapon specialization so it’ll be a welcome addition whatever mode, or mood, you’re in. As a T6 ship, the Titan-class also features the “It’s Another Enterprise” starship trait. When slotted, activating your captain’s Fleet ability will summon your faction’s flagship for temporary assistance. This update also introduces a Fleet T6 version of the Titan, and gives the existing Luna-class model a hi-fi redo like those seen in the Ship of the Line bundles.

HELLUUUURRRR GALAXY! Thanks to our special corespondent Commander Trip Tucker for providing some EXTREMELY useful research regarding Harcourt Fenton Mudd. We discussed him on a previous show and how to best utilize him. What is his purpose? How do we use him? and today, we go into a secret newly discovered benefit of running him with a VERY specific crew. He just got even more potent, and we explain how to use him, and why his value just went up. Plus we discuss the one off event this week, Threat from Beyond, WITHOUT KHAN! We speculate on it's reasoning, and why the event returned to normal on Sunday. Plus Battleship Round 2 is underway, stupid news is afoot, and technical problems plague the show as per usual. BackTrekking returns again to look back at the real-world inspirations of classic Trek episodes!Star Trek is the future . . . so where are all the robots? Nearly every artificial intelligence that Enterprise encountered during its five-year mission got blasted, talked to death, or both (usually after a smooch from Captain Kirk). Gene Roddenberry was a humanist in every sense of the word and the vision of a utopian future for humanity that he wanted to portray had little room for any artificial beings or aids; he wanted humanity to pull itself up by its own fleshy bootstraps. Nevermind the fact that automated manufacturing, self-regulating computer systems, and financial algorithms already made up the backbone of the economic and social prosperity that we enjoyed in the late 20th century. How much more would the utopia of the Federation in the 23rd century rely on robots and AI for economic regulation? Doesn't matter 'cause Kirk just told them to jump off a cliff. So robots, mostly, were relegated to villains and boogiemen on early Trek, from the unfeeling Nomad, to the devious Ruk, to the all-too-human M5 computer. Still, the galaxy couldn't be in danger every week, and as Trek stretched its comedic muscles in its second season, robots on the show found a new role: comedic straightmen. "I, Mudd" finds returning ne'er-do-well Harcourt Fenton Mudd the captive ruler of a planet of androids who are programmed to serve and study humanity, whether humanity likes it or not. It's a chilling premise, but the episode instead milks it for comedy, as our normally stoic crew acts (or over-acts) unhinged to exploit the robots' reliance on logic and the directives of their programming.Russian-American author Isaac Asimov wasn't afraid of a robot-filled future, nor did he think that a "rise of the robots" would be a cold, emotionless tide. Instead, his short stories and novels are filled with human-like robots who wrestle with their responsibility to serve humans but protect themselves, to emulate their creators but remain frustratingly behind them. Positronic robots are, by design, unable to harm humankind but one can imagine that someday their mission to serve humanity could be updated to include, like Mudd's androids, a measure of control in the relationship. On this episode, we compare and contrast the episode "I, Mudd" with its namesake, Asimov's seminal 1950 short story collection, "I, Robot". We talk about Asimov's unornamented prose, his vision of a world that robots will save whether we like it or not, the complex implications of the seemingly simple Three Laws, looking to "The Wizard of Oz" for a classic Trek antagonist, the friendship between Asimov and Roddenberry, poking fun at your own show, "Take my wives . . . please!", engaging "Trickster" mode, Leonard Nimoy: Robot Lawyer, red hair as characterization, missing out on a robot "Citizen Kane", the ancient "I, Robot" arcade game, and Mark Zuckerberg comes up more times than we're comfortable with.66 and 99? TREK IT OUT by Shane Hoover Star Trek Command Training Program It is hard to deny, at this point, that Star Trek programming has entered into a new Renaissance. With so many new shows currently in production, most every Trek fan can find something to be excited about. But, if you're an undergraduate or graduate student, this week's news from CBS may be the most exciting yet. CBS Television Studios and the Television Academy Foundation have announced the “Star Trek Command Training Program”. The new program will provide internship placements on a Star Trek series for two lucky students per semester, starting in 2020. If you've ever dreamed of sitting in the writers' room, building bridge sets, or maybe being part of the Lower Decks animation team, then this could be your ticket into the crew. Speaking about the program, Star Trek EP Alex Kurtzman said, “The Star Trek universe is an ideal place to celebrate new voices and perspectives. We want to provide the framework to begin entertainment careers in a meaningful way and can't wait to get started.” The application process will be handled by The Academy Foundation, while CBS Television will handle mentorship assignments and curriculum. Interested students should visit TelevisionAcademy.com/internships to apply. Applications are open through January 21, 2020 for eligible college students 18 and over. Colm Meaney Honored Veteran Star Trek actor Colm Meaney was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award this past week at the annual Irish Post Awards. The Awards honor the accomplishments of Irish individuals in fields like business, entertainment, and sports. We, of course, are familiar with Meaney for his 225 Star Trek appearances. His career as Starfleet engineer Miles O'Brien is second only to Michael Dorn's Worf for Trek appearances. The versatile actor has also appeared in an impressive body of other TV and film projects, with IMDB listing 127 acting credits to his name. When interviewed after the Awards, Mr. Meaney himself mused, “I enjoyed Star Trek. I did it for seven years. Seven years in a space suit was enough, but it was very enjoyable. Star Trek fans still speak to me in the street. Sometimes it's like I'm two different actors with two different careers - the Star Trek career and the other career” Speaking of the award itself, the actor said, ”I feel very honoured. It was a bit of a surprise but a very welcome one.” Official Star Trek Timeline The official Star Trek website also published an interesting new video this week. The video is titled “A Timeline Through the Star Trek Universe, Part 1”. Throughout the 2 minute, 5 second video, we're reminded of touchstone events in the Star Trek timeline. Beginning with the events of Voyager's “Death Wish” at 13.8 billion years ago, the chart carries right through the busy 23rd and 24th centuries, up to the destruction of Romulus in 2387. Each iteration of Star Trek on the big or small screen is represented, with special mention given to certain high profile events like the founding of the Federation, the Enterprise's 5 year mission, or the Dominion War. Perhaps most intriguingly, the video ends with the promise of “To Be Continued…” Star Trek 4 Speaking of adding to the canon timeline… Star Trek Kelvin 4 is gaining momentum --- FOR REAL THIS TIME. In an exclusive report by Deadline, Noah Hawley has been announced as its writer AND director. For those of you unfamiliar with the name, Hawley developed the X-Men Universe spinoff “Legion” and is the brains behind FX's Emmy-winning limited series Fargo…. Now, not much is else is known with respect to story or production timetables but, at least we know the production is -- officially -- in the works. But, what about all this Tarantino talk that we just can't avoid??... Well according to Deadline's Mike Fleming Jr //quote// The studio separately is working on a Star Trek spinoff that Quentin Tarantino is eyeing to direct and has been working on with Abrams. Since I prefer to fly escorts, I rarely fly ships that have hangar pets - but I like the combination of a fast ship with some extra friends around to help out. Also, the console, Universal Gravimetric Disruptions - is an excellent addition to any control builds out there. It provides a slight boost to Energy Damage and Control Expertise - but also - it affects multiple enemies. So if you like grouping up your enemies and making them explode - highly recommended! Welcome to Mudd's Market If you've been playing Star Trek Online for a long time then you're lucky enough to have had the opportunity to acquire a plethora of limited-time rewards. Well, thanks to Star Trek's mischievous merchant, Harcourt Fenton Mudd, some of those highly sought after exclusive items are making their way to a Zen market near you. A new tab has appeared in the Event UI for the Winter Wonderland event. Including an image and details for the new Tier 6 Fek'Ihri Dreadnaught carrier. Featuring a Lt. Commander Science/Miracle Worker bridge officer station and coming with a whopping 5 tactical console slots, this fearsome sail barge comes with the universal console, Open the Maw of Gethor. When activated, and we're not making this up, the ship projects a flaming skull in front of the ship dealing fire damage to all nearby foes and launching Lost Souls of Grethor. This carrier comes with two hangar slots from which you can launch more Lost Souls of Grethor, each one using Claw Swipes and Flame Breath to damage enemies. After achieving level 5 ship mastery you will unlock “Fiery Entrance. When activating Narrow Sensor Bands or launching Hangar pets, your ship will, of course, emit a burning ring of fire dealing damage to nearby foes with a chance to confuse them. At the time of this recording, there has been no official blog post detailing the ship, however, as of right now you can log into the game and view the stats and details under the Winter Event tab. PRIORITY ONE ARMADA NEWS Join us for TFO Tuesday - each tuesday we team up with other Armada members to earn marks and dilithium. If you're interested in joining The Klingon High Council fleet, you can submit an application to join on the armada website. WEEKLY TOP TIP Running patrols seems to be a fast and fun way to level up your event progress. It can be even faster when you're running the “Blockade” patrol. After you set up the beacon you'll need to defend three groups of Krenim ships from Vadwaur and Voth. Well, as the contact says, if you only destroy the Vaadwaur the Voth might leave. And that's exactly what happens. By focusing on taking out just the Vaadwaur ships you can cut your targets for the mission almost in half. As soon as the last Vaadwaur ship is destroyed in each group the Voth ships disappear. Just imagine how much time you'll save over the course this feature event. And if you want to run these patrols at a high difficulty level, this can make your runs a little smoother. Other Gaming News Star Trek Fleet Command Mirror, Mirror Event Star Trek Fleet Command is bringing the Mirror Universe into the Kelvin Timeline. The “Mirror, Mirror” event last from now until November 29th and features Terran Empire versions of Kirk, Spock, and Uhura that are obtainable by participating solo and alliance missions. Also included in this event is the opportunity to acquire blueprints to build your very own ISS Jellyfish ship. When playing through the Mirror, Mirror missions you'll also have the option to experience alternate endings. The choice is yours. Trek out the show notes for more details on the event. Retro Gaming Star Trek The Next Generation for Game Boy Earth date September 1993. Star Trek The Next Generation is heading into its seventh and final season. Star Trek Deep Space Nine premiered earlier in the year and now starts its second season. Star Trek's golden age was at its height on the small screen. Then there's the smallest screen. The Nintendo Game Boy. The OG black and yellow 160 pixel by 144 pixel 8-bit gaming brick of happiness. Star Trek TNG for both Game Boy and the NES also released during September of 1993. And boy or boy did this game have one little trekkie beaming with joy. Players take on the role of a Starfleet cadet being instructed by Jean-Luc Picard as they take command of the Enterprise-D and embark on a series of training missions. Everything from transporting an ambassador to rescuing a crew to engaging in combat with the Borg. As the acting captain you give commands through interacting with each bridge crew member by selecting their combadge. To complete shipboard tasks like establishing a standard orbit or diverting power to the shields, you play various mini-games. As you complete missions you rank up and will unlock passwords that can be used to pick up your progress where you left off. I played this exclusively on the Game Boy, but I've heard that the NES version is a little easier to play. The graphics are not the best for the time, and the gameplay can feel clunky and not very intuitive. But at a time when the only other mobile Star Trek video games had you flying the Enterprise through an asteroid field, this was the first game that you felt like you were in the Captain's chair. So how can you play this game today? Well, you could of course download an emulator on your computer or phone. I actually have something called a Smartboy from Hyperkin. It's basically the lower half of a Game Boy with the the control buttons that you slide your USB-C phone into. You run an emulator on your phone, but you can actually plug a real cartridge into the back and play the game from the physical Game Boy cartridge on your phone screen. I love this because it feel like a Game Boy in my hands, but with a bright colorful screen. But the best option in my opinion is to purchase a Game Boy Advance SP. These are the first clamshell looking Nintendo handheld consoles, and the first with a backlit LCD screen. It plays both Game Boy Advance games

It provides a slight boost to Energy Damage and Control Expertise - but also - it affects multiple enemies. So if you like grouping up your enemies and making them explode - highly recommended! A new tab has appeared in the Event UI for the Winter Wonderland event. Including an image and details for the new Tier 6 Fek’Ihri Dreadnaught carrier. Featuring a Lt. Commander Science/Miracle Worker bridge officer station and coming with a whopping 5 tactical console slots, this fearsome sail barge comes with the universal console, Open the Maw of Gethor. When activated, and we’re not making this up, the ship projects a flaming skull in front of the ship dealing fire damage to all nearby foes and launching Lost Souls of Grethor. KDF side needs fleet marks - 45,000 Fleet Marks needed for the Klingon High Council. So this is a great opportunity for members to earn Fleet Credits. If you’re interested in joining The Klingon High Council fleet, you can submit an application to join on the armada website. WEEKLY TOP TIP Running patrols seems to be a fast and fun way to level up your event progress. It can be even faster when you’re running the “Blockade” patrol. After you set up the beacon you’ll need to defend three groups of Krenim ships from Vadwaur and Voth. Well, as the contact says, if you only destroy the Vaadwaur the Voth might leave. And that’s exactly what happens. By focusing on taking out just the Vaadwaur ships you can cut your targets for the mission almost in half. As soon as the last Vaadwaur ship is destroyed in each group the Voth ships disappear. Just imagine how much time you’ll save over the course this feature event. When playing through the Mirror, Mirror missions you’ll also have the option to experience alternate endings. Star Trek’s golden age was at its height on the small screen. Then there’s the smallest screen. I played this exclusively on the Game Boy, but I’ve heard that the NES version is a little easier to play. The graphics are not the best for the time, and the gameplay can feel clunky and not very intuitive. But at a time when the only other mobile Star Trek video games had you flying the Enterprise through an asteroid field, this was the first game that you felt like you were in the Captain’s chair. So how can you play this game today? Well, you could of course download an emulator on your computer or phone. I actually have something called a Smartboy from Hyperkin. It’s basically the lower half of a Game Boy with the the control buttons that you slide your USB-C phone into.

Our Star Trek: Discovery – Season 2 Preview (and Other News) Roundtable! As we get ready for Star Trek: Discovery Season 2, Ruthie and I sat down for a marathon preview session with Steve Brown of the Panels to Pixels Podcast (Steve’s third roundtable), Wes Huntington of the Minnesota Star Trek Nerd Podcast (Wes’ second roundtable), and new panelists John McGrail of GSM’s Maid of Steel Podcast and Martin Donison of GSM’s Arrow Squad Podcast, Tomorrow’s Legends (@tomorowslegendsFacebook Group), and Sibercast (@Sibercast and Facebook Group) to discuss the Short Treks, news about the Picard series and Lower Decks, discuss other possible shows (including one that has since been announced) and then discuss what we expect for Season 2. The Short Treks in Review Opinions were varied between the six of us as far as which Short Trek was our favorite and which was our least favorite of the Short Treks. I would call that in and of itself a success, as they appealed to us differently. I’ve brought down bigger men than you, Picard!!! Sorry, that was a line from The Drumhead… Most of us are really waiting in great anticipation for the new Picard series, with one of us more tepid in our reaction to it. We react to all of the news that’s been coming out about the show, especially within the last week. I think we should go down to the Lower Decks in Section 31! The reaction to the animated comedy series Lower Decks was a little more reserved than the Picard reaction, though generally positive. Some felt better about it after the Harry Mudd Short Trek, as that Short Trek was written by the creator of the animated show. We talk a little here and there about the Section 31 series with Georgiou, which was just a rumor at the time. Since we recorded this on Friday, January 11th, CBS All Access has announced that the show is a go! Some of us look forward to it, and others aren’t too thrilled. We also talk about other shows that have been rumored but not yet official and others we speculate/predict may be on the horizon (including one I’m predicting). Are you going to talk about D

The Escape Artist. The fourth episode of Star Trek: Short Treks highlights Harcourt Fenton Mudd, a character that has been around almost as long as Star Trek itself. Rainn Wilson not only portrays Mudd, but also directs. The twists and turns of Mudd being captured and turned over to Starfleet again and again make for a fun episode to watch while the writing and comedic timing make it even more fun to listen to. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Patrick Devlin and Amy Nelson are joined by Brandon-Shea Mutala of Warp Five and Melodic Treks to discuss the brilliance of “The Escape Artist” and the concept of Short Treks. We debate the Mudd timeline compared with The Original Series and which actions were taken by Mudd himself or which by his androids. And, in closing, we rank the four Short Treks episodes. Star Trek: Discovery – Short Treks, Episode 4: The Escape Artist Ruthie and I are back with the fourth and final Short Trek before Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery! This Short Trek is titled The Escape Artist. It was written by Mike McMahan, who is the showrunner of the new Star Trek: Lower Decks animated series, and it was directed by Rainn Wilson, who also starred in this short. What a surprise! I didn’t have a lot of expectations for this Short Trek, but with a brilliant teleplay and Rainn Wilson’s incredible performance both behind and in front of the camera by Rainn Wilson, I will have to say that this was my favorite Short Trek of the four! We both loved it! Delicious Jipper! Ah yes, jipper!!! If you haven’t been able to see this Short Trek, you may wonder what the deal is with jipper. Well, it’s a drink, one that doesn’t exist yet, but I predict we’ll hear of someone inventing a jipper soon! Sipping jippers on a beach somewhere was the punchline of this story and a big part of what made this short one of the funniest Treks ever! Fred’s Images We have a comparison image from Fred from The Netherlands this time around. This compares the android shots in I, Mudd, using three sets of twins, and this episode, with the many versions of Rainn Wilson. STDP 024 – Fred’s image compares the androids and how they shot them in I, Mudd vs. The Escape Artist. No more After Treks? We also covered some news that is not being reported by the other podcasts or news websites yet. It appears that After Trek is not coming back for Season 2. It was announced back in June that it was being “reimagined” for Season 2, but After Trek has been removed from CBS All Access, both in the standalone app/website and on the CBS All Access Channel on Amazon Prime. If you’re watching internationally via Netflix, and if you’re watching on CraveTV in Canada, you still have access to it, at least for now. Matt Mira, the former host who hosts the popular Star Trek: The Next Conversation podcast, announced on his show that the show is not returning and for Season 2, and that he is not under contract with CBS at this time. He’s offered to return should they need him. It may come back later in Season 2, or for the Picard show, but for now, it’s canceled. Matt implied on his podcast for Patreon subscribers that the budget overruns that caused (at least in part) former showrunners Aaron Harberts and Gretchen J. Berg their jobs were probably the reason why After Trek was canceled. Also, he didn’t find out about getting the hosting job until the Thursday before his first show just a few days later. That explains a lot. That’s it for The Escape Artist! So, that’s it for this mini-episode! We both loved it! We’ll be back with our Season 2 Preview Roundtable in a few days! Harcourt Fenton Mudd: scoundrel, con-man, forger, misogynist, thief, sociopath. When Captain Kirk’s recurring villain was reinvented for Discovery, his list of crimes expanded to include murder. Previously a harmless ne’er-do-well, Harry Mudd, portrayed on The Original Series and The Animated Series by Roger C. Carmel, became more than a thorn in Captain Lorca’s side when …

Ferengi Expert and frequent Reopening the Wormhole guest Kregg Castillo makes his debut on this podcast to talk with Jack and old standby Barm about an episode of a TV show that will most likely never have a Ferengi in it. But it DOES have HARCOURT FENTON MUDD, time crystals, a gormagander, a Lorca death reel, war steam and so much else, and you better believe we’re talking about ALL OF IT. Come with us as we explore Kregg’s heritage, expose the dark heart of Hollywood, visit Jack’s news desk and see the ever-changing world of Japanese titles of things. HARCOOOOURT!

Star Trek: Discovery – S1E7 – Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad On this episode of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Adam and I discuss Season 1 Episode 7, titled Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad. This episode marks the return of another TOS figure, Harry Mudd. Man, Mudd can hold a grudge, can’t he? In this episode, we see the Discovery in a 30-minute time loop. This is a Trek trope. We’ve seen a similar thing in other episodes of Star Trek, the most notable being the classic TNG Season 5 episode, “Cause and Effect”. Unlike that episode, we see a time loop created intentionally, with Mudd and Stamets, who still seems a bit acid trippy this episode :-), retaining the awareness of what happened in previous time loops. Mudd, he sure can hold a grudge!!! It’s stated at one point that Mudd killed Lorca 53 times, and I think he kills him a few more! Also unlike the TNG episode, we see them not get repetitious. We seem to some of the loops, while others are mentioned in passing, and others we don’t see. I think we see the first loop, but then many more loops happen before the next one. This continues on. Stella!!! I didn’t say too much about this during the episode, but I was a little disappointed with Stella. She seemed a lot nicer, younger and better looking than the Stella-bot we see in TOS. It didn’t seem too much of a punishment for Mudd, and certainly not what he deserved for what he had done. I thought it led to a weak ending. The writers also seemed to make the characters a little too aware in the last couple of loops, and I thought it was a big stretch that Stamets could have conveyed everything going on to each major character in a believable way. However, on a second watch, both elements bothered me a lot less, and I just enjoyed it for what it was. What is the magic to make the sanest man go mad? I didn’t mention this on the podcast since I screwed up the meaning of the episode with the next one (cue TOS Incorrect! sound effect!!!), but the title of this episode comes from Homer’s The Iliad. Here’s the quote: “…There is the heat of Love, the pulsing rush of Longing, the lover’s whisper, irresistible—magic to make the sanest man go mad.” Disco! Disco duck!!! Duck, it’s disco!!! So Star Trek: Discovery earned a bit of those Disco shirts, featuring Wyclef Jean’s re-sampling of The BeeGees’ Staying Alive, which probably is the cornerstone of disco music. And you can buy your own Disco shirt now!!! Oh well, I had hoped we’d see an end to that, but I guess not. In summary, we both thought this was a fun episode to watch, even with its flaws, and can’t wait for next week! Send in your feedback! Want to participate? Join our Facebook group! Choose Your Pain. Captain Lorca is abducted on his way home from a meeting at which Starfleet expressed concerned that the Klingons are aware of Discovery's unique propulsion system. He finds himself in a Klingon jail with a Starfleet prisoner of war named Tyler Ash and the infamous Harcourt Fenton Mudd. Meanwhile, back on Discovery, Saru butts heads with Burnham over the tardigrade, and Stamets makes a sacrifice which places him in a reflective situation. In this episode of The Edge, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Kay Elizabeth Shaw of To The Journey and Heather Barker to discuss the fifth episode of Star Trek: Discovery, “Choose Your Pain.” We debate Saru's command decisions, foul language, Harry Mudd, and that crazy mirror scene while concocting plenty of theories for the plot of upcoming episodes. Star Trek: Discovery – S1E5 – Choose Your Pain Adam and I discuss Season 1 Episode 5, titled Choose Your Pain. Our characters deal with the pain they are causing the tardigrade. Lorca has been taken and then tortured by the Klingons; and we come across the final main cast member, Lieutenant Ash Tyler, and meet an old character in Harry Mudd. Choose Your Pain, Harcourt Fenton Mudd!!! We also see the Klingon L’Rell again, who has moved up and is Captain of her own ship. The reveal of her having Tyler as a prisoner for seven months bring me more questions about Tyler, and makes me wonder about Voq. Could they be one and the same? It wouldn’t be the first time we see a Klingon be altered to appear human. We see this in The Trouble With Tribbles. Now, I am not sure enough about this possibility to declare him a spy, but I will be paying attention to this character going forward. We also enjoyed the Saru scenes, especially with him dealing with his resentment of Burnham and the continuation of the tardigrade story. We both thought this was the best episode so far, and can’t wait for next week! Send in your feedback! This week we review the 5th episode of Star Trek: Discovery "Choose Your Pain". In this episode we learn a bit of history of Captain Lorca, meet a potential new crew member in Lt. Ash Tyler and see the introduction of the one and only Harcourt Fenton Mudd! And how about the ending!? We speak to Lt. Paul Stamets himself, Anthony Rapp to elaborate on his character's new situation.
Mudd In Your Eye. Harcourt Fenton Mudd: liar, thief, brigand, and frequent thorn in the side of Starfleet captain James T. Kirk. Most who encounter this man would say he has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. However, could it be possible that Mudd is now the architect of an unprecedented peace treaty between warring factions who have been fighting for millennia? In this episode of Literary Treks, hosts Bruce Gibson and Dan Gunther are joined by The Edge and Melodic Treks' Brandon Shea-Mutala to discuss Mudd In Your Eye. We talk about silly reasons for war, transwarp beaming, the nature of death for the Nevisians, another society run by computer, Stella Mudd, how we think Mudd might compare in this novel to his depiction in the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery, and wrap up with our final thoughts and ratings. In the news segment, we discuss the release of David Mack's Desperate Hours and John Byrne's upcoming appearance at NYCC 2017. Harcourt Fenton Mudd is an "intergalactic pimp" whom we first meet trafficking mail order brides and later see creating an android of his ex-wife just so he can keep her locked up. Yet Mudd, often described as a "loveable rogue," is considered a fan favorite and was the only non-Enterprise crew character to recur on TOS. Join us as our crew takes an in-depth look at the three Mudd-centric episodes ("Mudd's Women," "I, Mudd" and TAS' "Mudd's Passion"). For All Intents and Purposes has hit the quarter-centennial mark! That is, if by "centennial" we mean a hundred episodes rather than a hundred years. However, is it going to be a celebration...or a crisis?! To find out, you'll have to listen! Do you dare?! Week in Geek: Andrew watches more Star Wars: Rebels while Dan buys his first Nintendo home console in what is likely over two decades. Star Trek: Taking another dip into the Original Series, this time Dan and Andrew watch and discuss the classic "I, Mudd" featuring everybody's favorite scallywag, Harcourt Fenton Mudd. Discussion: As if it's a big surprise, with Series 8 of Doctor Who––the first featuring Peter Capaldi's 12th Doctor––having come to an end, they discuss not only the final episode (SPOILER ALERT), but Series 8 as a whole and its place in the oeuvre of Doctor Who. The Art of the Season Finale: With the closing of Doctor Who in mind, Andrew and Dan discuss season finales in general. Specifically, they discuss what they are and what they have been and how and why they've changed over time. Question of the Geek: What is your favorite season finale to a television show?
