Tim Cook, Sir Jony Ive, and Laurene Powell Jobs unpack the life and work of Steve Jobs, the legendary Apple co-founder who changed consumer technology forever. Jobs was a regular guest at Code conferences, appearing at the first All Things D in 2003. Over the years on the Code stage, he predicted the end of the PC era, bantered with his arch-rival Bill Gates, and famously denied— and later teased— plans for the iPhone. Now, he's remembered by three luminaries who knew him best: Cook, his protege and successor; Ives, who translated his ideas into iconic designs; and Powell Jobs, founder of Emerson Collective and Jobs' wife of 20 years, until his death in 2011. Don Melton, former WebKit and Safari team lead at Apple, recalls some close encounters with Steve Jobs. Original text from Don's website. Don did a wonderful interview about his computer journey before, during, and after heading the Safari project on episode 11 of the Debug podcast. Steve Jobs Quote Compilation Index WWDC 2004: “Our competitors buy the panels we reject” All Things D 2007, Bill Gates: “He's really pursued that with incredible taste and elegance… I'd do a lot to have Steve's taste” Game Changers, Guy Kawasaki: “It's a perfect match because he's a showman who can really introduce a product, and he has great products to introduce” WWDC 1997 Keynote: “The line of code that a developer can write the fastest, the line of code the developer can maintain the cheapest, and the line of code that never breaks for the user is the line of code the developer never had to write.” MWSF 2001 (Titanium PowerBook G4 intro): “We have the most powerful notebooks in the world … but they have the sex. We want both!” MWSF 1999: “Our relationship with Microsoft, it's kind of like a marriage … it's terrific about 99% of the time… about 1% of the time we argue over stuff, usually having to do with multimedia. Y'know, in life, that's not a bad ratio.” MWSF 2001: “We very much appreciate the applause but you shouldn't be applauding because this is how it ought to work!” MWSF 1999: “We don't think design is just how it looks; we think design is how it works. … We think we've got the most incredible access story in the business. And you know what's it's called? It's called a door.” WWDC 2004: “The back of these displays looks better than the front of most of our competitors'. … First time I saw one of these I couldn't talk for the first minute.” WWDC 1999: “We're giving away fifty of these new PowerBooks… and the winner of the first PowerBook is… oh! Steve Jobs! No…” iBook Dual USB Intro, 2001: “Michael Dell said some disparaging things about us lately, publicly. We're not going to engage in that sort of thing, but let me show you their product. … It looks like this and you can see it's about that thick, and it's got some nice fans in the back so you can keep an eye on them…” CAUSE 1998 on “digital convergence”: “I converged myself last week, actually. Can you tell? I don't know what it means. Here's what it means: it means your television's gonna make toast. Y'know? That's what it means. […] People go their TVs to turn their brain off […] I used to think like many you might have thought that there was this giant conspiracy of the networks to put mediocrity on television and dumb us down! … But I then found out the truth which is far more depressing, which is the networks give people precisely what they want!” Apple 2003 Q4 investors call: “We're gonna integrate toasters and computers. We think people want toast when they're working on their computers. We can have computer control, just get it exactly how you–we can put up pictures of toast, and you pick the one that looks like what you want, and it'll come right out the side!” CHM iPhone Event w/Fiennes, Ganatra, Hertz, Forstall: Scott Forstall's Steve Jobs cafeteria payment story Xserve Launch Event/WWDC 2002: (on Apple's extremely poor record of committing to enterprise products) “I wasn't here when Apple did a lot of those … I look at that as a dream when, you know, Apple was in a coma.” CHM iPhone Event w/Fiennes, Ganatra, Hertz, Forstall: “My interview at NeXT was funny because .. I'd been there 10 minutes… Steve barges into the room, grabs the guy …” New Pathways Into the Library of Congress: “Bicycle for our minds” bit CHM iPhone Event w/Fiennes, Ganatra, Hertz, Forstall: “You're a billionaire, you don't understand!” MWSF 1999: “Maybe it's telling you to revert back to a Macintosh” CAUSE 1998: “The goal used to be to make the best computers in the world… goal 2 we got from Hewlett-Packard, which is we have to make a profit! .. along the way somewhere, those two got reversed. … It's very subtle at first but it turns out it's everything.” CAUSE 1998: (on user interface design) “we've just stuck warts on the side of what we had 10 years ago instead of rethinking everything” Seybold 1999 Keynote: John Warnock: “The wonderful thing about having Apple back is that this industry is no longer boring. Thank you, Steve.”

(A full transcript of this episode will be available soon on FollowFridayPodcast.com. Please check back later!) ~ Some of New York Times writer Kara Swisher's favorite follows are people she has admired, crushed on, and befriended — and also people she has battled with, debated, and investigated. And that's no accident. "I think people are dying for that in this incredibly partisan time. It's very hard to reach out to people you disagree with," she says, explaining why she comes to the table with people whom others might consider unpalatable. Pushing them away, she says, "plays into all the malevolent people who are trying to take us apart." Olive branches aside, the https://www.nytimes.com/column/sway (Sway) and https://podcasts.voxmedia.com/show/pivot (Pivot) host also promises to pull no punches in her forthcoming memoir about covering Silicon Valley as a tech journalist for the Wall Street Journal, AllThingsD, Recode, and now the NYT. "I'm burning it all down," she says. "And then I'm like, goodbye ... I have people, the richest people in the world, the most powerful people, [saying] 'You're so mean to me.' I'm like, 'Are you 12?'" In this live episode of Follow Friday, recorded at https://welcometomannys.com/ (Manny's) in San Francisco, Kara explains what she likes (and, in some cases, hates) about her politically incorrect Pivot podcast co-host https://twitter.com/profgalloway (Scott Galloway); the actor and producer https://twitter.com/gemma_chan (Gemma Chan); Twitter and Square CEO https://twitter.com/jack (Jack Dorsey); newspaper columnist and "Fire and Fury" author https://twitter.com/MichaelWolffNYC (Michael Wolff); and "Full Frontal" host https://twitter.com/FullFrontalSamB (Samantha Bee). Could opposition be a good thing? In this meditation, we will explore the possibility that opposition can be our alert system. As I just announced, I published a book this week! If you'd like to take a look at it, here's the link: Renovate Your Testimony: A Guided Workbook to Solidify Your Faith Below are the references used in this meditation: “Opposition permits us to grow toward what our Heavenly Father would have us become.” Dallin H. Oaks (Opposition in All Things) D&C 24:8, “I am with thee.” “Preach the truth” (D&C 23:2) “Exhort” or strongly encourage (multiple references in D&C 23, 24, 25, 26) “Pray vocally before the world as well as in secret and in your family, and among your friends, and in all places.” (D&C 23:6) “Unite with the true church” (D&C 23:7) “Magnify thine office” (D&C 24:3) “Continue calling upon God in my name” (D&C 24:5) “Devote all thy service in Zion” (D&C 24:7) “Be patient in afflictions” (D&C 24:8) “Attend to thy calling” (D&C 24:9) “Declare my gospel” (D&C 24:12) “Lay aside the things of this world and seek for the things of a better.” (D&C 25:10) “Lift up thy heart and rejoice and cleave unto the covenants” (D&C 25:13) “Continue in a spirit of meekness” (D&C 25:14) “Let your time be devoted to the studying of the scriptures and to preaching” (D&C 26:1) “Thine adversity and thine afflictions shall be but a small moment.” (D&C 121:7) “Thy friends do stand by thee…” (D&C 121:9) “He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.” (Isaiah 40:29) (pause) “[He] will also ease the burdens which are put upon your shoulders.” The music for this week's meditation was graciously provided by the talented Addison Kirk. For more of his music (including sheet music!) visit www.addisonkirk.com. The random buzzes are provided by my cell phone. I'll put it in a better place next time. :)

On this episode of The Built in Seattle Podcast, I talked with Leslie Feinzaig, Founder & CEO at Female Founders Alliance (FFA).For extras from this interview, subscribe to my weekly emailEpisode Highlights:Leslie's personal experiences raising VC that inspired FFA.Why FFA is a business, not a non-profit or "charitable cause."How Leslie knew she had founder/market fit. What needs to change in 20 years and how we'll know it's working. Why FFA started an accelerator to create a flywheel. How Leslie pivoted her way to product market fit and evolved with the community. Why Leslie just wanted to "do her job" and not have gender get in the way.The journey from 0 to 1500+ founders served. Why Leslie makes authenticity an advantage.Guest Bio:Leslie Feinzaig was born and raised in San Jose, Costa Rica, where her family — and her heart — still live to this day. She’s the granddaughter of Holocaust refugees who were refused entry into the U.S. in the 1930’s. Through generations, her family leaned on entrepreneurship, hard work and education to settle into their new home — values that, until recently, were mostly reserved for the males in the family. After securing permanent residency in the U.S. — and with it, the ability to switch jobs and join smaller companies — Leslie moved into tech startups. She led product management and marketing at Big Fish Games, going into their $1 billion acquisition. She then joined Julep Beauty, an Andreessen-Horowitz backed ecommerce startup, leading product management, front-end engineering, and digital marketing. She left Julep in 2015 to start her own company. The following year, when her daughter was 6 months old, Leslie launched Venture Kits — games that develop leadership skills through play. Her one-of-a-kind, inspirational concept quickly garnered critical acclaim and customer love. The experience of raising capital for this company, coupled with the realization that only two percent of venture capital is invested in female founders in the US, propelled Leslie to start the Female Founders Alliance in 2017.Today, Leslie leads FFA full time, dedicated to her personal mission of creating a more just world for her daughter. She was named one of Forbes Magazine’s 100 Most Powerful Women from Central America & the Caribbean, Seattle Magazine’s Most Influential People, and Puget Sound Business Journal’s 40 Under 40. She’s a frequent speaker at events like TEDx Pura Vida, SXSW Interactive, Geekwire Summit, NW Angel Capital Conference, Seattle Magazine’s Daring Women, and more. Her writing has been featured in publications like Forbes, Entrepreneur, and AllthingsD. She lives in Seattle, Wash. with her husband and 3-year old daughter.Where to follow Lesliehttps://twitter.com/LeslieFeinzaighttps://www.linkedin.com/in/lesliefeinzaig/https://www.lesliefeinzaig.com/Where to follow Adam:https://www.linkedin.com/in/adamschoenfeld/https://twitter.com/schoenyFeedback? Walt Mossberg isn’t just a titan of journalism, he’s every bit as iconic and transformative as many of the products he's reviewed. From 1991 to 2013, he was the personal technology columnist for the Wall Street Journal. Alongside Kara Swisher, Walt also hosted the All Things D conference, which brought some of the biggest names in tech to the stage, separately and together. In 2014, Walt and Kara went off on their own and launched Recode, which they sold to Vox Media in 2015. Walt retired in July of 2017 and, since then, Walt has been devoting his time to causes like the News Literacy Project. Then, and now, what’s impressed me most about Walt, what made me want to be more like Walt, is how he bridged the gap between technology and people. How he deliberately avoided jargon, or buzzwords, or speaking over anyone’s head but also never talked down to anyone either. Never made them feel excluded. On the contrary. In an industry now over-swarming with geeks and tech-heads, Walt kept things relatable too everyone. And I just had to ask him how that all came about. Episode 67 of Gaming Couch! I must admit I had a bit of a funk these last two weeks. Very busy and stressful with work and traveling over the weekends. Last week I just didn't want to make an episode. I didn't have it in me and it wouldn't have been good quality. So I disappeared for a bit. Now I'm back and on schedule. This week I wanted to make a different kind of list. I hang around facebook and joined the All Things D&D group and really enjoy. One day I saw a post asking 'Any advice for a new DM?'. Well, that got me thinking. I got what ended up being 9 tips for new DMs. It was 7 but I thought of 2 on the spot. Improving is the best you know? Sit back and enjoy! I'm glad to have you back for another listen. Smartboy P.S, one day I will think of something witty to put in the P.S section.

At the age of 15 X was putting on live shows locally for young audiences dancing, rapping and rhyming lyrics at venues with a group of teenage performers. This was just the beginning of Empire X’s many musical talents. Since the day he was old enough to realize the “art” of music, X knew he had something in him musically that he was not going to let be unheard or unknown. He was originally introduced to the Jungle hard core music scene in the early 90’s which led to him meeting a local DJ in 1993 by the name of Chad Allen that caught his interest and provided him with his first introduction to DJ’ing. X found himself very intrigued with the ability a DJ had to capture the mind, body and soul of every person in the club by spinning vinyl and performing talents. In 1994 he started spinning out at clubs and parties which eventually led to music production. Since his life of Drum and Bass production began EMPIRE X has become a member of many major organizations and recording labels Such as Freak/Obscene UK, Future Sickness Rec. UK, Mind Saw Rec. NY, Foul Play Rec. Fl, Tech Cycle Rec. Russia,Force Rec. Fl. and Order in Kaos Rec. UK.Throughout X’s musical career he has performed with many musical talents such as Dylan, Robyn Chaos, Gain, Evol Intent, Empress, Panacea,Limewax, Kryteria, Mumblz, and many more.Labels:Freak/ObsceneFuture SicknessJungle SyndicateOrder In KaosTech CycleBlack HoeEx MachinaForceFoul PlayMindocracyDanger Chamber DigitalTheoryon DnBFor bookings www.djempirex@gmail.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Join the Acquired Limited Partner program! https://kimberlite.fm/acquired/ (works best on mobile) In this special episode Ben & David head to Recode’s SF office and sit down in the red chair with the one & only Kara Swisher! Kara tells the story of Recode, from the beginnings of her partnership with Walt Mossberg in the late 90’s at WSJ to the launch of the D Conference and the All Things D blog, to starting Recode and ultimately being acquired by Vox Media in 2015. Kara is someone we’ve long looked up to at Acquired, and it was really special to have her join us on the show. We hope you enjoy the conversation as much as we did! Matt Mullenweg, the co-founder of WordPress, talks with Recode's Kara Swisher about how the blogging platform has evolved in the 13 years since it launched, powering a huge number of websites that included AllThingsD and an earlier version of Recode.net. Mullenweg also talks about WordPress' recent acquisition of a mobile journalism startup, the Atavist; how he manages 750 employees without an official corporate office; and why "every tech company should have an editorial team." With the exception of that one episode about the Tour de France, we haven't done a lot of sports here on Giant Geek vs. Mega n00b. But a TV show about a SportsCenter-like show, written by "West Wing" creator Aaron Sorkin? Sign us up!But wait, there's more: Joining us for our introduction to "Sports Night" is Sorkin superfan Walt Mossberg — although he may be better known as the former Personal Technology columnist for the Wall Street Journal who co-founded AllThingsD and Recode, where Eric now works. For the purposes of this discussion, we watched five episodes of "Sports Night," chosen from across its two-year run on ABC. They are: S1E7, “Dear Louise”; S1E15, “Dana and the Deep Blue Sea”; S1E19, “Eli’s Coming”; S2E3, “Cliff Gardener”; and S2E11 “And the Cutman Cometh."When we recorded this podcast, those were all available on Hulu, but unfortunately they seem to have been taken off! To watch those five episodes, you can rent them for $1-2 apiece from Amazon, iTunes, Vudu and Google Play. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

More Californians are on Facebook than voted in the general election. If the government could tap into that social engagement, governing could grow more collaborative, open, accountable and transparent. Creating a digital town square is the concept behind "Citizenville," a new book by California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom. At this Milken Institute Forum, Moderated by Kara Swisher, co-executive editor of AllThingsD, Newsom will discuss how to draw on this digital revolution to make government more user-friendly. Named the "Most Social Mayor in America," Newsom knows what he's talking about. He has more than 1 million followers on Twitter and 108,000 Facebook friends, and is active on Pinterest, YouTube and Flickr. For the book, he interviewed dozens of innovators, including Yelp co-founder Jeremy Stoppelman, new-media expert Arianna Huffington and Twitter co-founder Evan Williams. Newsom's fan base extends beyond the digirati. President Clinton said, "'Citizenville' makes a fascinating case for a more engaged government, transformed to meet the challenges and possibilities of the 21st century, and where technology brings the critical tools of our democracy closer to its citizens than ever before."
