The Electoral College is a group of people known as "electors," who get together every four years to select the next president. Now, some of you may be asking yourself, "But I thought we the people vote for the president?" And the best answer to that questions is: kind of.That's because each party has a group of electors. And when votes are counted in a state, the party that wins the most votes in that state sends their chosen electors to the national Electoral College. Although electors are expected to vote for the candidate that won the popular vote in their state, most states don't require electors to do so.Electors who don't vote as pledged are known as faithless electors. So, happens to electors who vote against the candidates they pledge to vote for? Only 33 states, plus D.C., require electors to vote as pledged — and only a few of those states penalize electoras for acting "faithlessly." So, why do we use a system like this to choose our country's fearless leader? You'll have to tune in to S1E4 to find out. Download our Show Memo to learn more about the Electoral College or to easily share what you learned after listening to S1E4 on social media. Follow us on Instagram @americandreamoncaffeineHave questions about our government or its systems, laws, or policies? Star Trek Discovery Podcast, featuring Picard and Lower Decks

Star Trek: Lower Decks – Season 1 Episode 4 – Moist Vessel We’re back with the fourth episode of Lower Decks, titled Moist Vessel. This episode was written by Ann Kim and directed by Barry J. Kelly. A generational ship, ascending, and a dysfunctional family/command dynamic… This episode, we finally got a little bit of the dynamic between Mariner and Freeman and how they rub each other the other way. In the end, they did end up working well together in a serious crisis. They saved the ship and the crew of the Merced. I was wanting to see that family dynamic, although we still don’t know how Mariner got that way. I still say she was pushed into command before she was ready, at too young of an age. However, Mariner’s behavior is really hard to stomach. Again, this is probably exaggerated for an animated show, but why would they keep her in Starfleet if she acted that way? Tendi gets involved in O’Connor’s ascension, and he ACTUALLY ascends, which made little to no sense to me. HOW did that happen? WHY did that happen? Am I overanalyzing? Maybe. While I was editing this episode, I wondered if I was taking it too seriously, and holding this show up to a live-action standard. Again, maybe. It did bug the heck out of me, though, enough to take off two points from my rating. Tendi was a little annoying, too. By the way, the t-shirt I mentioned that had the koalas and galaxies can be found here. The terraforming ship was cool. What it did to the USS Merced and Cerritos wasn’t. It seemed like a LOT of damage to just be able to reverse. That took me out of the episode. A Tellarite captain was cool to see, although the name of Durango was confusing unless he had some human DNA. I don’t really know but it would have been nice to explain. Um… yeah, that. Captain Freeman loses an all important peace accord at Cardassia Prime and demoted to a lousy return to an old first contact gift giving mission only to find out that her crew is not as efficient at doing their jobs as she thought. Mix in a Ransom and Mariner away mission that goes awry with some aliens who seems to hate wood and love geodes that leads to a weird, almost uncomfortable romantic spark between the two that I can’t say I enjoyed. This balance thing can be quite frustrating... because you are both trying to let go and relax... while also pushing yourself further along the path. Healing happens on the "let go" side, whereas growth and success only happens when you push outside your comfort zone. What happens when you stay in one of these two zones for too long? When you push through ALL the time, leaving no time to rest and recover, you will eventually burnout. What happens… or doesn’t happen when you never push? Everything stays the same…. Or gets worse.Somehow we need to find a balance between the two. Where we push enough to get momentum and reach goals…. But we take time off for self care and nurturing to make sure we don’t burn out. This episode is all about HOW you can find that elusive balance in your life.Support the show (https://michellemarsh.com.au/michelle-marsh/join-our-community/)

Podfader #4 Howdy -- I’m Kyle Bondo, and this is Podfader! My weekly podcast about helping you keep your podcast from podfading, especially when the drive for new and interesting content becomes a struggle. S1:E4 -- Release the Podcast Throttle No one has ever made a rule that prevents your daily, weekly, or monthly podcast from changing its release schedule, taking time off, or modifying its length from time to time. What does it mean to throttle your podcast? Throttling your podcast is defined as reducing or decreasing the number of episodes you release. This could be any kind of decision that results in a slow down, pause, or even complete stop of your podcast. If you think of your podcast as an engine, each episode is the fuel for that engine. No fuel, no engine. The throttle to that engine is your release schedule. You either throttle your podcasting engine on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. Somewhere you decided -- hopefully before you launched your first episode -- on what timeframe you were going to release your episodes. The throttle is set to that specific schedule.  Release your podcast every Thursday? Then your throttle is set to a weekly release schedule starting the moment your release your episode on Thursday and running until you release your next episode on the following Thursday. Then it repeats. This is your throttle tempo -- or the rhythm of your own podcast release cycle.   Podcasting Disruptions #1 - Late -- is when you produce your podcast but you don't get it published at the same time each time.#2 - Pause -- is when you stop producing your podcast for a short period of time. #3 - Hiatus -- is when there is an interruption in the intensity to which you produce your podcast.#4 - Podfade -- is when the pause or interruption that stopped you from producing a podcast become permanent. Reasons to Throttle #1 -- Need to Pull Back #2 -- You need to finish something else #3 -- Something Didn't Work #4 -- It's not fun anymore #5 -- Just need a break Alternatives to Podcast Throttling #1 - Try changing your podcast from Episodic to Serial or Seasonal.#2 - Try to make better use of your time by doing one a month batch recording.#3 - Try going back to your episode archives and recycle your best episodes with a "Best Of" group of shows.#4 - Reduce the size of your episodes to produce Short Episodes.#5 - Take advantage of quick episodes where you check in with your audience for an update on what's coming next About the Show Podfader, hosted by veteran podcaster Kyle Bondo, focuses on the challenges of keeping your podcast going and the drive we all have has creators to keep our podcasts going with new and interesting content. If you’re a struggling podcaster, Podfader will be your sanctuary to get you through the messy middle of any podcasting strategy. Stop fading and start casting! We see the “spore drive” working, which explains the weird saucer section of the Discovery, and one of the coolest things we’ve ever seen a starship do! It’s Burnham fighting the monster within herself and dealing with the monster on board Discovery. Who is really a monster? Both, one or neither? Since we’ve all seen the 24th Century of this universe, we know that the spore drive is not commonplace on future Starfleet vessels. However, we’ve just seen just what it can do, and what controls it. We both enjoyed this episode, although I enjoyed it more than Adam did. What can I say? I like cool ships doing cool things, and the spore drive is cool! And Tardigrades play a factor in this episode… you know, those little, resilient water bears? Only this one isn’t so little! Some mysteries from last week are solved, but certain ethical dilemmas seem to present themselves. Are they hurting the Tardigrade? Burnham gets a new uniform! For their recap of The Crown, S1E4, Tom and Kelly welcome Failure to Launch co-host and noted critic of The Crown Molly Sanchez! Together, they cough-shame London, pitch an adaptation of Devil in the White City, discuss Sky Law, wonder about the Buffalo Bill of sheep, agree that humanity sucks apart from inventing Hot Cheetos with Lime and strawberry sour belts, spot a cameo from Jimmy Carter, and call the wind Donora. Kelly has a rare butt deficiency, Tom reminds us that women can be writers, and Molly’s tweets don’t get the respect they deserve. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The investigation into the viral outbreak takes a back seat to some back story for Cole and Ramse in this week's episode entitled Atari. Cole's flawed nature demands a moral compass, and in the past that role was filled by Ramse. Will Cassie be his new compass as he navigates the past to prevent the death of billions? Join us for show news, episode analysis, and our listener feedback segment (although this week it's a different special treat)! This week we talk about the masterful evil of Deacon, the fortunate duplicity of Max, the apparent death (but not really) of Jones and Ramse, and the evolution of Cole's brutality. Read more... OUR FAIR CITY – S1E4 SOL (SCI-FI / DARK COMEDY) LANGUAGE Our Fair City is a post-apocalyptic science fiction / dark comedy audio drama set in the not so distant future where the skies are stormy, and the landscape is a vast frozen tundra. Lightning rigs high above the city gather energy from thunderstorms, mad scientists walk the earth, and adorably monstrous Molepeople dig tunnels deep underground to expand the city’s habitable space. In which we meet Neal Henderson, a particularly odoriferous policy of HartLife, as he reaches out to the bureaucracy in an act of desperate optimism. Hartlife Studios
