The latest episode of Blues is the Truth is now available, and it's an unmissable listen for any blues enthusiast. This week, host Ian McHugh brings his usual passion and deep knowledge of the genre to a special episode that pays tribute to two blues legends who have recently announced their retirement—Robert Hokum and Buddy Guy. Their contributions to the world of blues have been nothing short of extraordinary, and Ian takes the time to honour their legacies with heartfelt commentary and carefully selected tracks that showcase their impact on the genre. In addition to these tributes, the episode features an incredible lineup of artists who represent the diverse and vibrant spirit of blues music today. You'll hear from Tab Benoit, whose soulful guitar work and powerful vocals have earned him a place among the blues greats. There's also music from Nothing In Rambling, a band that captures the raw, authentic energy of traditional blues, and Bob Malone, whose piano-driven blues brings a unique twist to the genre. The show continues with performances from Piper and the Hard Times, The Buicks, and Rick Estrin and the Nightcats, each bringing their own style and flair to the mix. Mississippi MacDonald's soulful voice stunning guitar add another layer of richness to the episode, while Sam Morrow and Zac Harmon keep the energy high with their contemporary takes on blues. There are tracks from the fabulous Emma Wilson and legendary guitar hero Freddie King. Finally, no episode would be complete without a nod to the legendary BB King, whose influence continues to resonate through the ages. The regular features, including the much-loved *Blues Driver* segment with Paul Michael, return this week, offering listeners a chance to discover some of the standout tracks that made waves in the blues scene. As always, Ian's insightful commentary provides context and connection, making the music even more meaningful. Patrick got his hands on an advance copy of Mark's CD and has been raving about it, as you will hear during the show. Mark has been a fixture in the Houston music scene for years, playing bass with countless acts on stage and in the studio, including the Mighty Orq, the Allen Oldies Band, Trish Cramblet, Katie Rushing, Sam Morrow, Leon III, Charlie & the Regrets, and Mike Stinson... just to name a few. We talk about songwriting, the state of today's so-called "country music" and the shape of the music industry in general... and of course, kill off a few songs. Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Sam MorrowTwo years before releasing Gettin' By on Gettin' Down — the most guitar-driven, groove-heavy album of Sam Morrow's catalog, with songs that roll just as hard as they rock — Morrow hit the highway in support of his third record, Concrete & Mud. Despite the 28-year-old being a road warrior for years, this time things felt different. Joined by a band of amplified roots-rockers, Morrow spent eighteen months traveling halfway across the world, playing Concrete & Mud songs to the biggest audiences of his career. By the time the dust settled, he'd become a staple of Americana radio on both sides of the Atlantic, with outlets like Rolling Stone and NPR singing his praises. Sam Morrow,Quick Fix,Concrete And MudSam Morrow,Rosarita,Gettin' By On Gettin' Downmakingascene,Sam Morrow - Americana - E Corn,Sam Morrow,Heartbreak Man,Concrete And MudSam Morrow,Paid by the Mile,Concrete And Mud

Down With The Ship- Joe Bonamassa, Royal Tea- Brothers Osborne, All Night - Sam Morrow, Round 'N Round- Kid Ramos & Bob Corritore, No More Doggin'- Jeremy Ivey, Things Could Get Much Worse- Rodney Crowell, The Damage - Lydia Loveless, Can't Think- Mipso, Just Want To Be Loved- Mark Bryan, Wanna Feel Something- Vanja Sky, Oh Well- Ronnie Earl & Broadcasters, All Your Love- The Yayhoos, Oh! Escuchamos a Jeremy Ivey con su excelente Things Could Get Much Worse y encontramos a Mike Plume dispuesto a endulzar tu vida con canciones memorables. - Jeremy Ivey, Things Could Get Much Worse- Mike Plume, I'm Your Huckleberry - Mike Plume, Summers Around Here (Don't Last Forever)- Yo La Tengo, Wasn't Born To Follow - Tim Heidecker, Fear Of Death- Eddie Van Halen, Eruption/Spanish Fly (Live, 1995, Toronto).- Mike Plume, That's What I'm Talking About- Eddie Van Halen, Cathedral

We're closing out the week with Episode 133 with songwriter Sam Morrow. Morrow is releasing the country-funk rock album Gettin' By On Gettin' Down this Friday, October 30. The greasy groovers of the nine-track Gettin' By finds Morrow embracing more and more character-driven vignettes while maintaining that steady grit'n'groove and tone'n'taste mantra of ZZ Top, Little Feat, and so on. Morrow's gravelly howl is as strong as ever on the likes of the brisk "Money Ain't a Thing" and the sweltering heater "Golden Venus." As strong as Morrow's swampy vocals (seriously, there's an early Sturgill tone to them) and enthralling narratives, Gettin' By's best moments come by Morrow and company's sharp, biting electric guitars. They're inherently bold as they work in over thick and punching bassline grooves--namely on the opening "Rosarita" and the meandering "Sit Crooked, Talk Straight."During this one, we talk about anxiety and restlessness during the Quarantine, reality television, Los Lobos, Los Angeles culture, expanding songwriting narratives and character-driven vignettes, co-writing, and the writing and recording of Gettin' By On Gettin' By. Sam Morrow's take on Americana mines the rich depths of the lineage of Southern Rock and renegade Country with his meaty voice front and center. Morrow's delivery is powerful and gritty - the kind of voice that could sing the phonebook and make it sound like an anthem. Stylistically, there are shades of Cash, Waylon and Merle on both his albums to date, and Morrow's early struggles with substance abuse have given him a hard-won perspective on the demons that haunt frail and fallible human souls that he shares with his idols. But along with shades of the Mount Rushmore faces of roots rock, Morrow also includes influences and colors that show his age; he's still young and he grew up in a mashup world without record store bins to keep artists in a stylistic boxes. He's not afraid to throw a Radiohead cover up on YouTube. Morrow's vocal command reflects hints of a sort of backwoods Jeff Buckley, and his instrumentation and arrangements have a groove that is definitely more Memphis than Nashville or Austin. There is a bit of bounce and boogie in the drums - and pulsing, groovy Hammond B3 lines provide a counterpoint to Morrow's passionate ruminations. The masters of the trade approach their songs with a fearlessness to tell the stark truth about whatever story they're telling, and Morrow shares this honest, no-BS approach. Many ears are no doubt eagerly awaiting his forthcoming new album.
