Perhaps one of the most meaningful facts that illustrates the sweeping changes taking place in global affairs is the following: In 1950, nearly one in three people in the world lived in a Western country. By 2050, that number will dwindle to one in ten, bringing with it a wide variety of recalculations by companies, culture, influence, and politics. This demographic change is but one of many interesting pillars supporting the arguments of the Singapore-based political scientist Samir Puri, whose new book, "Westlessness: The Great Global Rebalancing" explores how the gradually diminishing power of the West is mapped onto geoeconomics, technology, popular culture, and identity. In this conversation with host Robert Amsterdam, Puri makes it clear that it is not a total replacement or dislocation of the West from global affairs we will be confronted with, but rather a realignment that has been decades in the making. Puri points to the global economic crisis of 2008 as one of several turning points, when the West's confidence in its economic supremacy began to crack, but also discusses sweeping changes to technology and popular entertainment and global commerce that indicate how the next several decades are quite unlikely to resemble the apex of Western power in postwar period.

Britain is expected to get the green light to join a key Indo-Pacific trade bloc usually referred to as the CPTPP before the end of this week. The UK would be the first new member to join the 11-nation bloc after it was first signed in 2018. How big of a win will this be for post-Brexit Britain? What can we expect from the UK partnering with the Pacific giants?  Drive Time's Elliot Danker speaks with Dr Samir Puri, Visiting Lecturer in War Studies at King's College London and author of 'Russia's Road to War with Ukraine to find out.  [Find Us on Podcast Platforms]Awedio | Apple Podcasts | Google Podcasts | Spotify | Amazon Music | OmnyStudio [Contact Us]Presenters: Elliot DankerProducer: Nadiah KohSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A US military MQ-9 surveillance drone crashed into the Black Sea on Tuesday after being intercepted by Russian fighter jets, in the first such incident since Russia's invasion of Ukraine more than a year ago. What ramifications will that have for already tense Russia-US relations? In the UK, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt delivered his first Budget on Wednesday, vowing a US$114 billion in cost-of-living support for this year and next, as it forecast the UK to stay out of recession and inflation to slow sharply. As strikes continue to rage on, will we see more being done to alleviate this issue? My guest today is Dr Samir Puri, who is a visiting lecturer in War Studies at King's College London and has previously taught at Cambridge and John Hopkins. He joined me for a deep dive into his two most recent books. The first one, ‘The Great Imperial Hangover: How Empires Have Shaped the World', explores how empires of the past still influence geopolitics today. And the second one, ‘Russia's Road to War with Ukraine: Invasion amidst the ashes of empires', published in late August, explores the role of imperialism in Putin's ultimate decision to invade Ukraine and traces Ukraine's fate as a nation caught in a geopolitical tug-of-war between Russia and the West. Samir has also served as an international observer at five Ukrainian elections, including during the Orange Revolution in 2004. Soon after the first Donbas war began in 2014, he spent a year in east Ukraine working on both sides of the front line as part of an international ceasefire monitoring mission. Since Russia's latest invasion of Ukraine, Samir's analyses of the war have been featured by the BBC, Al Jazeera, Bloomberg, CNN, the Wall Street Journal, and other media outlets. Some of the topics we discussed are: Samir's background and how it influenced his academic interests Defining ‘empire' and understanding the role of its legacy Distinguishing between a formal and informal empire The consequences of waning US hegemony and Pax Americana The importance of history and lineage to national and individual identity Understanding how imperial legacy contributed to Russia's invasion of Ukraine How Western democracies should navigate their imperial legacy The significance of Ukraine for Russia and its imperial legacy Proximity to history as crucial in shaping contemporary narratives ‘Great power contest' as the present narrative Exploring the structural reasons why Ukraine is currently a warzone Understanding NATO and how it might be perceived outside of the alliance Samir's assessment of how the Russian invasion of Ukraine ends Exploring the impact of the Russian invasion on Chinese post-imperial aspirations Samir's greatest concern as we head into 2023

In this episode, host Meia Nouwens is joined by Dr Samir Puri, IISS Senior Fellow in Urban Security and Hybrid Warfare, and Antônio Sampaio, Senior Analyst at the Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime, to discuss how technology impacts urban security and the democratic landscapes of cities. With over half of the world's population living in cities, new technologies, such as smart cities or surveillance tech, have increasingly been leveraged to make life in cities safer and more efficient. This includes leveraging technology to combat crime and terrorism, to respond to natural disasters or to improve the quality of life of citizens. New technologies are also starting to play an important role in political landscapes, for example by connecting people in protest movements. But these technologies can also be leveraged to other ends: to suppress protesters and restrict freedom of speech. We hope you enjoy listening to the episode. In this episode, Meia Nouwens is joined by Dr Samir Puri, The IISS' new Senior Fellow for Hybrid Warfare, for a discussion about the concept of ‘hybrid warfare' and its potential applications in the Asia-Pacific. Having observed the realities of hybrid warfare in the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine, Samir highlights the differences between ‘grey zone' and ‘hybrid warfare' activities.Meia and Samir then explore the possible applications of hybrid warfare in the Asia-Pacific, with a particular focus on how China could expand its regional influence through hybrid strategies and tactics. Samir also predicts that grey zone activity will likely become an increasingly common feature in international affairs in the 2020s as the United States clashes with China's efforts to establish its own informal empire. As a result, Samir suggests Western powers may need to revisit their hybrid warfare capabilities in this new multi-polar world order. We hope you enjoy listening to the episode.
