Gershkovich has been held in Moscow’s Lefortovo pre-trial detention centre for months after being arrested and charged with "espionage." Previous attempts to free him via the Russian legal system have come up fruitless. According to the Washington Post, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov explained on Tuesday that officials "don't want [the details] discussed in public," adding that prisoner swap negotiations "must be carried out and continue in complete silence." The Russian government has appeared willing to swap US-held prisoners for Gershkovich, however, Deputy Foreign Minister said earlier this year that talks would only begin after the journalist's trial had ended. Gershkovich and the US have tried to hasten proceedings, but it has been to no avail. Last week, a Russian court determined that he had to remain in pre-trial detention at Lefortovo until August 30. On Monday, US Ambassador to Russia, Lynne Tracy, met with Gershkovich and noted that he "is in good health and remains resilient despite the circumstances." She expressed hope that the Russian government would "provide regular consular access." As the Wall Street Journal reports, White House officials stated on Tuesday, "While we unfortunately do not have a breakthrough to share, we continue to pursue every avenue to secure the release of Evan Gershkovich." The US government, including Ambassador Tracy, has maintained Gershkovich's innocence and slammed the Russian government over his treatment. "The accusations against Gershkovich are unfounded," she said, "and we call on the Russian authorities to release the journalist immediately." The Wall Street Journal also stood with Gershkovich, stating,"Evan is a member of the free press who right up until he was arrested was engaged in news-gathering. Any suggestions otherwise are false." The first US journalist to be detained in Russia on charges of spying since the Cold War, Gershkovich could face up to 20 years in prison if found guilty. Now this! Another whoopsie from the government! https://justthenews.com/accountability/waste-fraud-and-abuse/usda-says-it-overpaid-10-food-stamp-benefits-2022-program USDA says it overpaid 10% of food stamp benefits in 2022 as program doubled from 2019 Largely due to unintentional mistakes" by the government or households, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said it overpaid Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits in 10% of cases, The Washington Times reports. The government either wrongly determined households were eligible for the program better known as food stamps or overestimated how much they were due, while 2% were deemed underpayments. The total rate of under- and overpayments was lower before the COVID-19 pandemic: 7.4% in 2019 and 6.8% in 2018. States varied widely in how accurate their payments were, with Alaska the worst at overpayment with 57% and South Dakota the best at under 3%. The program has also doubled since 2019, reaching $113.9 billion from $55.6 billion. It now covers 41 million Americans with an average payment of $230 per month. The Government Accountability Office also released figures Friday of overpayment across the federal government in fiscal 2022, $247 billion, while cautioning the figure is an estimate because the government cannot "determine the full extent to which improper payments occur." Now to Los Angeles we go… https://thepostmillennial.com/los-angeles-homeless-population-spikes-to-more-than-46000?utm_campaign=64487 Los Angeles County homeless population spikes to over 75,000 Homelessness has increased by ten percent in the city of Los Angeles, and it has increased in Los Angeles County by nine percent. According to the 2023 Greater Los Angeles homeless count results conducted by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), Los Angeles County’s homeless population increased to approximately 75,518, an increase from 69,144 in 2022. In the City of Angels, the number of homeless people increased to approximately 46,260 people, an increase from 41,980 people in 2022. Earlier this year, it was revealed that California holds half of all “unsheltered people” in the US. Dr. Va Lecia Adams Kellum, chief executive officer of the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, said, “The homeless count results tell us what we already know, that we have a crisis on our streets, and it’s getting worse.” Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Janice Hahn called the results “disappointing,” writing in a statement, “It is frustrating to have more people fall into homelessness even as we are investing hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars and resources into efforts to bring people inside. I appreciate the cities that have stepped up and supported solutions, but these numbers prove that solutions-oriented cities are too few and far between.” Los Angeles officials challenged the accuracy of the 2022 LAHSA count that reported finding zero homeless people in Venice Beach, an area known for its massive homeless problem. As a result, the county used a new counting app and hired a demographer and two data scientists. Though Democratic Mayor Karen Bass has claimed at least 14,000 homeless people have been moved into interim or permanent housing under her administration, it was revealed earlier this year that the city was spending over $800,000 per housing unit. The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority made a point of emphasizing that Los Angeles is not the only major US city to see an increase in its homeless population, noting that Chicago saw a 57 percent increase and Portland saw a 20 percent hike. According to the agency, in California, Kern County saw a 22 percent increase, San Bernardino County a 26 percent increase, San Diego County a 22 percent increase, and Riverside County a 12 percent increase. Earlier this month, San Diego and Portland approved homeless camping bans. Moving on… Do you guys remember that Children’s hospital in Boston that was exposed for performing gender mutilation & sterilazation on kids? https://townhall.com/tipsheet/miacathell/2023/07/04/boston-childrens-hospital-dethroned-n2624870 Children's Hospital Caught Trans-ing Kids No Longer No. 1 for Pediatric Care For the first time in a decade, Boston's Children's Hospital—which was exposed last year for its experimental genital mutilation, sterilization, and chemical castration of minors identifying as "transgender"—is no longer the no. 1 pediatric medical center in America. Since 2014, Boston Children’s Hospital has claimed the top spot on U.S. News and World Report's honor roll rating the best pediatric-care facilities in the nation. But, the consumer-ranking giant's 2023 - 2024 list published on June 21 has dethroned the Beantown-based institution, the leading recipient of pediatric-research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In the latest rankings, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center took the crown, with Boston Children's Hospital bumped to second place. U.S. News and World Report collected data from almost 200 medical centers through an annual survey that examines a myriad of criteria, such as patient safety, clinical outcomes, and surgical success. Each hospital's score was derived from a nationwide polling of 15,000-plus pediatric specialists, who were asked "where they would send the sickest children in their specialty." Among its LGBTQ-centered departments, Boston Children's Hospital is home to the Gender Multispecialty Service (GeMS) clinic, the "first pediatric and adolescent transgender health program" in the U.S. Serving more than 1,000 families to date, GeMS has expanded to "treat" patients as young as three-years-old. The hospital's Center for Gender Surgery offers surgical mutilation to gender-dysphoric teenagers, including vaginoplasties for 17-year-old boys (Boston Children's Hospital has since quietly changed the age minimum); metoidioplasties and phalloplasties; and chest reconstruction and breast augmentation for 15-year-old kids. Now, the age range has been raised to 18-years-old in the hospital's official guidance. Removal of the testicles is often performed at the same time as a vaginoplasty, which requires a lifetime of dilation,, and can leave the patient sterile. Boston Children's Hospital, whose tagline is: "Until every child is well," was caught promoting "gender-affirming hysterectomies" for "trans youth" in a now-scrubbed video, which was part of a 90-part series that positively frames the medical butchery without addressing the irreversible damage that it does to the human body. Other topics highlighted in the series include "Why is hair removal necessary before phalloplasty?" and "Fertility preservation: What transgender patients should know." Salvaged by Libs of TikTok, an archived version of the 33-second hysterectomy footage shows a smiling Dr. Frances Grimstad of Boston Children's Hospital Division of Gynecology happily describing, as upbeat background music played, the medically unnecessary operation that can render (otherwise) physically healthy patients infertile by removing female reproductive organs. Another since-deleted video posted to the hospital's YouTube channel showed a psychologist claiming that "a good portion" of children she sees at Boston Children's Hospital GeMS clinic know they're transgender "from the womb.” https://twitter.com/i/status/1649007304774123521 - Play Video In a Journal of the American Medical Association article that Boston Children's Hospital GeMS co-director Dr. Oren Ganor authored on "Streamlining Interstate Access to Gender-Affirming Surgeries," the plastic and reconstructive surgeon called for a drastic increase in "clinician capacity" for children to be subjected to "sex-change" surgeries. Ganor also urged a ramping up of "training efforts" at medical school residency programs to instruct future physicians on performing "transgender" procedures. The local NPR news station WBUR reported in 2018 that Ganor wrote in an email that Boston Children's Hospital is "slightly flexible" when it comes to the age acceptance of biological males seeking genital surgery "because of the difficulty young women can experience accessing gendered spaces—like dorms and bathrooms—if they still have male genitalia." The hospital's policy had not yet been finalized, Ganor said, "because of the issue around consent for sterilization (which is part of the procedure)." Now, in entertainment news… https://boundingintocomics.com/2023/07/03/after-the-walt-disney-company-canned-chief-diversity-officer-latondra-newton-warner-bros-discovery-and-netflix-lose-their-diversity-heads/ After The Walt Disney Company Canned Chief Diversity Officer Latondra Newton, Warner Bros. Discovery And Netflix Lose Their Diversity Heads At the end of June it was revealed that The Walt Disney Company’s Chief Diversity Officer Latondra Newton was no longer with the company. Now Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix’s have also seen their diversity heads leave their respective companies. Variety announced Newton had left The Walt Disney Company after they obtained an internal company memo on June 20th from the company’s HR chief Sonia Coleman. Coleman wrote in the memo, “I’m writing to share the news that Latondra Newton has decided to leave The Walt Disney Company to pursue other endeavors.” Coleman went on to reveal that Julie Merges would take on Newton’s role on an interim basis as the company looked for a new DEI leader, “Latondra’s direct reports will report to Julie Merges on an interim basis until a new DEI leader is identified. I want to thank Julie for leading this team along with her Talent Acquisition organization.” “Additionally, Shelby Curry and the DEI Internal Communications team will continue reporting to Carrie Brown in her role leading internal communications & engagement for the company,” Coleman wrote. Following Newton’s exit, TheWrap reported that Netflix’s head of inclusion strategy Vernā Myers was stepping down from her position at the company in September. While she is exiting the company as head of inclusion strategy she will still advise the company albeit the report notes she will be focusing primarily on her consulting company, The Vernā Myers Company. Unlike The Walt Disney Company, Netflix appears to have a replacement for Myers already lined up in Wade Davis. Davis is currently the Vice President of Inclusion Strategy and worked under Myers for four years. In a statement Myers said, “It’s hard to step away from the company and this role because of how much I love Netflix and the people here. I’m so excited for the talented Wade Davis who will be taking the lead of the I-and-D work along with our incredible inclusion strategy team and I can’t wait to see the continued progress we all will make together.” At the end of June, Los Angeles Times reported that Warner Bros. Discovery axed its diversity leader Karen Horne, who was the company’s Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in North America. According to the outlet’s sources her departure from the company was announced on June 28th and the company’s spokeswoman Megan Klein informed the outlet she was not let go due to Warner Bros. Discovery’s “cost-cutting but rather a rethinking and reorganization of the company’s diversity organization.”

Episode 30 of the Israel Defense and Diplomacy Forum with Prof. Chuck Freilich, former Israeli Deputy National Security Advisor and Danny Ayalon, former Deputy Foreign Minister and Ambassador to the US. In this episode, Chuck and Danny talk about climate change and its impact on Israel's national security with Galit Cohen, who was the Director General for the Ministry of the Environment. Galit emphasizes the Middle East is already considered most vulnerable to climate change, with a severe problem of water scarcity, and is also expected to become 40-50% hotter in the coming decades. The region faces a dual water problem: an already severe shortage of freshwater, along with an anticipated rise of about a meter in the level of the Mediterranean, which will inundate coastal shorelines, including cities and critical infrastructure along them. Climate change is also expected to create greater regional instability, mass migrations, even terrorism. The IDF will have to deal with the effects to both personnel and combat equipment. Israel is a global leader in climate-tech, especially in extreme heat, desertification, and plant-based meat. 20% of all start-ups in Israel in the last year were in climate-tech. The MirYam Institute. Episode 29 of the Israel Defense and Diplomacy Forum (IDDF) – with Prof. Chuck Freilich, former Israeli Deputy National Security Advisor, and Danny Ayalon, former Deputy Foreign Minister and Ambassador to Washington. In this episode, Chuck and Danny engage in an extensive back-and-forth about the impending partial agreement, or maybe just “understanding”, between the US and Iran on the nuclear issue. Chuck believes that Iran's strategic position has improved greatly, strengthening its bargaining position, and that a partial deal, for all its faults, is the least of the bad options. Danny is more critical and believes that it would just bring us that much closer to an operational Iranian nuclear capability. They then switch to the topic of US-Saudi relations and Saudi-Israeli normalization. The Saudis have reportedly made four demands of the US in exchange for doing so: an American security guarantee, US acquiescence to a civil Saudi nuclear program, advanced arms sales, including F 35's, and progress on the Palestinian issue. Chuck and Danny discuss the pros and cons of agreeing to these different demands.Join us as Chuck and Danny agree and disagree, in detail and in-depth, always respectfully, on the critical issues Israel faces. The MirYam Institute. Chuck explains in detail why the changing nature of warfare means that an asymmetric conflict with Hezbollah will be very bloody and likely to achieve only transient results. Danny is somewhat more optimistic. They then turn to a discussion of the ramifications of the elections in Turkey, for Turkey itself, the US and NATO and primarily the Middle East and Israel. Danny is optimistic that Erdogan will continue the rapprochement with Israel of the last year or so, Chuck is more skeptical about his behavior. They then discuss the impact of the changing regional alignments, including the Iranian-Saudi and Iranian-UAE rapprochement, and return of Syria to the Arab fold. This is Episode 27 of the Israel Defense and Diplomacy Forum (IDDF) – with Prof. Chuck Freilich, former Israeli Deputy National Security Advisor, and Danny Ayalon, former Deputy Foreign Minister and Ambassador to Washington. Chuck and Danny go in-deep on the outcome of the recent conflict in Gaza, Operation Shield & Arrow. Both agree that it didn't fundamentally change the situation in Gaza, but Danny is more optimistic about the harm to Palestinian Islamic Jihad's capabilities and the strengthening of Israel's deterrence. Chuck takes a more equivocal position on the deterrence issue, believing that the operation may contribute to Israel's long-term deterrence, but that the short-term impact is minimal and that targeted killings have a questionable record of efficacy. He also believes that the decision to launch the operation, justified though it was for counterterrorism purposes, was also designed to serve the premier's personal political goals. Chuck and Danny then turn to the ramifications of the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal five years ago this month. Chuck believes that decision to do so was an historic error. Danny does not dispute the hard data that Chuck presents in support of this contention, but does present some counterarguments.Join us as Chuck and Danny agree and disagree, in detail and in-depth, always respectfully, on the critical issues Israel faces. The MirYam Institute. Episode 26 of the Israel Defense and Diplomacy Forum (IDDF) – with Prof. Chuck Freilich, former Israeli Deputy National Security Advisor, and Danny Ayalon, former Deputy Foreign Minister and Ambassador to Washington. In this episode, Danny advocates a more forceful response to rocket attacks from Gaza, including the cautious response to the recent round in which Hamas fired 104 rockets at Israel. The threat is unacceptable, he argues, and Israel must launch a major operation to strengthen its deterrence and create new rules of the game. Chuck believes that there is a reason that all governments for the last 20 years, left to right, including the current ultra-right wing one, have refrained from a major response, which is that the cost in lives, primarily of IDF soldiers, will be far greater than the price of the current situation. If and when Israel develops an offensive capability that buys more than a few months, at a price it is willing to pay, he too will advocate offensive action, but for the meantime, he supports reliance primarily on defense. Chuck and Danny then turn to the regional realignment currently underway, in which the Saudi-Iranian rapprochement was a critical turning point. The UAE and other Sunni states are also trying to reduce tensions with Iran, Iran is continuing to expand its influence in the region, including through the current visit by President Raisi to Syria, and Syria is being reintegrated in the Arab world. None of these developments bode well for Israel.Join us as Chuck and Danny agree and disagree, in detail and in-depth, always respectfully, on the critical issues Israel faces. The MirYam Institute. Episode 25 of the Israel Defense and Diplomacy Forum (IDDF) – with Prof. Chuck Freilich, former Israeli Deputy National Security Advisor, and Danny Ayalon, former Deputy Foreign Minister and Ambassador to Washington. In this special episode, spanning the week between Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) and Memorial Day for Fallen Soldiers, followed immediately by Israel's 75th anniversary, Chuck and Danny discuss what these dramatically diverse dates mean for them. Both agree fully on the importance of Holocaust remembrance and Danny describes a project underway at Yad Vashem that has already documented the names of five out of the 6 million. When it comes to Memorial and Independence days, their views diverge. Chuck talks about how he has long awaited the 75th anniversary as an opportunity to celebrate Israel's remarkable achievements, but that for the first time ever, following the domestic crisis in recent months over the “judicial reforms”, he will not be able to celebrate. Instead, it will be a day of solemn reflection for him. For example, he would not participate in a memorial ceremony addressed by ministers such as Ben-Gvir and Smotrich, or the premier who has appointed them.Danny believes that Memorial Day and the 75th anniversary should be an opportunity to begin the healing process, that we are all one people and must put our differences aside. While he shares many of Chuck's concerns regarding the need to address critical issues such as relations between synagogue and state, the secular and ultra-Orthodox communities, Ashkenazim and Sepharadim and Jews and Arabs, as well as the Palestinian issue, he believes that it is now time for compromise and goodwill. Chuck believes this is an opportunity that should not be wasted on platitudes and is a time for finally making real decisions on these critical issues.Join us as Chuck and Danny agree and disagree, in detail and in-depth, always respectfully, on the critical issues Israel faces. The MirYam Institute. Episode 24 of the Israel Defense and Diplomacy Forum (IDDF) – with Prof. Chuck Freilich, former Israeli Deputy National Security Advisor, and Danny Ayalon, former Deputy Foreign Minister and Ambassador to Washington. In this episode, Chuck and Danny interview Prof. Manuel Trajtenberg, one of Israel's most prominent economists and a prominent global expert in the field of innovation and economic growth. Trajtenberg has vast experience in national security areas, as well, and is now as Executive Director of the Institute for National Security Studies, INSS, in Tel Aviv.Trajtenberg is deeply concerned by the “legal reforms” proposed by the government. In a fascinating analysis of the situation, he believes it essential that a true process of national dialogue now begin, which will require that all sides make painful concessions, e.g. on the issue of ultra-Orthodox military service. He believes that the only way to do this is as part of a national unity government, which would be formed following new elections in the near future.Danny agrees with Trajtenberg's recommendations, believes that one cannot force military service on the Haredim and, in any event, that's all sides are now fatigued by recent events. Chuck believes that these events are the Israeli equivalent of the French Bastille, the American Civil War, or the revolutions in Russia and China, one of those defining moments after which things never are – and should not be – the same. Hestresses that one should never waste a good crisis andthat well-meaning proposals for national dialogue miss this historic opportunity to finally address truly critical issues, such as the future of the West Bank, synagogue-state relations, the electoral system and more. Danny believes that the national discussion should be limited to the domestic issues, primarily the legal dimensions, and that foreign policy, such as the future of the West Bank, should be kept separate. Danny does believe, however, that Netanyahu has fulfilled his historic role and must give way for a new generation of Likud leaders.Following the discussion of the ongoing domestic crisis in Israel, Chuck and Danny turn to their deep concern over the crisis in relations with the US. Both agree that the domestic crisis in Israel is causing grave damage to the bilateral relationship. Chuck notes a recent poll showing, for the first time, that a majority of Democrats now support the Palestinians, not Israel, a development that Danny deplores. Both stress the vital importance of the US for Israel's national security.Join us as Chuck and Danny agree and disagree, in detail and in-depth, always respectfully, on the critical issues Israel faces. The MirYam Institute. Episode 23 of the Israel Defense and Diplomacy Forum (IDDF) – with Prof. Chuck Freilich, former Israeli Deputy National Security Advisor, and Danny Ayalon, former Deputy Foreign Minister and Ambassador to Washington. In this episode, Chuck and Danny interview Avi Bell, a professor of law at Bar Ilan University and University of San Diego. Prof. Bell is also a senior fellow at the Kohelet Policy Forum, which is the think tank behind the current push for far-reaching legal change in Israel. He is an eloquent and well-informed proponent of the reforms and although he did not convince either Chuck or Danny, he certainly presented his case effectively.Following the interview, Chuck and Danny continue their ongoing analysis of the unprecedented legal and political crisis Israel is undergoing. Chuck notes the statements by the heads of virtually all state institutions, including the former heads of the Shin Bet, Mossad, atomic energy committee, chiefs of staff, almost all former Supreme Court justices, attorneys general, and more, who have come out strongly against the proposed changes. Danny is essentially in full agreement and is particularly worried about the impact on relations with the United States. He notes that the Prime Minister has yet to receive an invitation to visit the White House, and the unprecedented nature of Pres. Biden's open criticism of the reforms. Both Chuck and Danny deplore the fact that Israel is totally preoccupied with its domestic convulsions at the expense of dealing with the truly important issues, such as Iran's growing uranium program. They conclude the podcast with a discussion of the Saudi-Iranian rapprochement, brokered by China, and its ramifications for the region and Israel. One big question stemming from this rapprochement is whether we are seeing the beginning of the Chinese era in the Middle East, at the expense of the American leadership role in the region.Join Chuck and Danny as they agree and disagree, in detail and in-depth, always respectfully, on the critical issues Israel faces. The MirYam Institute. Episode 21 of the Israel Defense and Diplomacy Forum (IDDF) – with Prof. Chuck Freilich, former Israeli Deputy National Security Advisor, and Danny Ayalon, former Deputy Foreign Minister and Ambassador to Washington. In this episode, Chuck and Danny interview Elyakim Rubinstein, Israel's former deputy chief justice and former Attorney General, to discuss the judicial-political crisis. Rubinstein fears that the proposed “judicial reforms” will turn Israel into a “democratic dictatorship” and states, surprisingly, for a former justice, that he even participates in the public protests. Danny has shifted his position, from concern, to sharing in Chuck's strong opposition to the reforms.Chuck argues that Israel's right-wing often raises important concerns, but that its constant overreach ends up destroying almost everything it touches. The judicial reforms are one example, but the new government's West Bank policies have already led to rising violence and to heightened friction with the US, indeed, that Israel is risking its entire strategic relationship with the US. Even worse, the de facto annexation of the West Bank is turning Israel into a binational state, possibly irreversibly.Danny agrees that Israel must separate from the Palestinians, but emphasizes the need to keep negotiating cards for the future, including through ongoing settlement by Israel's true pioneers and Zionists. He rejects the argument that Israel is undermining its democratic character, or creating an irreversible situation, and believes that a peace settlement may only be possible in the next generation or thereafter. He believes that Israel should wait until there is a deal on the table and true reconciliation is possible. Chuck believes that Danny's approach means it will be too late.On Iran, Danny rejects Chuck's charge that right-wing overreach - the withdrawal from the JCPOA - has left Israel with no good options and emphasizes that it is high time for the international community to take effective action. He believes that credible US and Israeli military options will deter Iran from crossing the final threshold. Chuck fully agrees that Israel must develop a military option to strike in Iran, but stresses that even the US can no longer achieve more than a brief delay through military action and that effective international action is again right-wing dreaming, not realistic policy.Join us as Chuck and Danny agree and disagree, in detail and in-depth, always respectfully, on the critical issues Israel faces. The MirYam Institute. Episode 20 of the Israel Defense and Diplomacy Forum (IDDF) – with Prof. Chuck Freilich, former Israeli Deputy National Security Advisor, and Danny Ayalon, former Deputy Foreign Minister and Ambassador to Washington.  In this episode, Chuck and Danny begin with a discussion of their shared horror over the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria and deepest sympathy for the people affected. They further discuss the IDF emergency search and rescue team dispatched to Turkey, whether it is likely to have an impact on Israeli-Turkish relations, and the fact that Israel itself, which is geologically “overdue” to be hit by a major earthquake, is woefully unprepared. Sharp differences emerge as they turn to recent events in the Palestinian arena, the reasons for the ongoing conflict and potential resolutions. Although Chuck agrees with Danny that Palestinian rejectionism and terrorism have had a devastating impact on Israeli attitudes towards the peace process, he notes that one cannot ignore the similar impact that Israel's settlement activities have had on the Palestinian side. Both agree that Sec. Blinken's recent visit to Israel was highly unusual, with the US expressing strong criticism of Israel in a number of crucial areas, including the planned judicial changes and impact on Israeli democracy. Whereas Danny is more confident, Chuck believes that Israel's policies, both in regard to the Palestinians and now the planned judicial changes, threaten Israel's fundamental character as a state and pose a threat to the future of the “special relationship”.They also disagree over the ramifications of the new government's policies on ties with Arab states, especially the Gulf states. Although Danny acknowledges problems with Jordan, he believes that the damage with the rest will not be significant. Chuck is far more concerned and believes that the relationship will likely be impaired significantly.  Join us as Chuck and Danny agree and disagree, in detail and in-depth, always respectfully, on the critical issues Israel faces. The MirYam Institute. Episode 19 of the Israel Defense and Diplomacy Forum (IDDF) – with Prof. Chuck Freilich, former Israeli Deputy National Security Advisor, and Danny Ayalon, former Deputy Foreign Minister and Ambassador to Washington. In this episode, Chuck and Danny discuss three critical issues: US-Israeli relations; Israel's policies regarding the war in Ukraine, and its domestic crisis. They also conduct a fascinating conversation with Abe Foxman, one of the great American Jewish leaders of our time. Both Chuck and Danny are concerned about growing tensions in US-Israeli relations. Chuck was concerned that a crisis, which was brewing in any event, has now been greatly exacerbated by the new government's policies towards the Palestinians and the “judicial reform” now underway. Danny is more hopeful that these differences can be managed. Chuck raises an interesting question, whether Netanyahu and Biden can work out a grand bargain: Netanyahu promises to keep a lid on the extremists in the new government, both on the Palestinian and domestic issues, in exchange for an American commitment to supply critical military capabilities that Israel needs to carry out a possible attack against the Iranian nuclear program (e.g. modern aerial tankers), if necessary, and at least partial backing for it.Chuck and Danny reverse their typical positions on the war in Ukraine. Danny is open to changes in Israel's positions and possible supply of weapons to Ukraine. Chuck takes the more hawkish position, that the same considerations that led Israel to limit its support for Ukraine to humanitarian aid, to date, have not changed and should not, unless Russia provides Iran with nuclear assistance.Foxman elaborated on his controversial recent statement, that his unconditional lifelong support for Israel has now become conditional. “We always said that Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East...If just half of the coalition agreements happen, it will change the nature of democracy in Israel… If Israel is redefining who is a Jew, why would diaspora Jews identify with it?... American Jews love Israel, but if Israel doesn't love them back…”Join us as Chuck and Danny agree and disagree, in detail and in-depth, always respectfully, on the critical issues Israel faces. The MirYam Institute. Episode 18 of the Israel Defense and Diplomacy Forum (IDDF) – with Prof. Chuck Freilich, former Israeli Deputy National Security Advisor, and Danny Ayalon, former Deputy Foreign Minister and Ambassador to Washington. In this episode of the IDDF Podcast, Chuck and Danny discuss two very different issues; the dramatic changes that Israel's new government has already begun making to its judicial and democratic processes and China's rising influence in the Middle East, following the recent visit of President Xi to Saudi Arabia. The new government is moving rapidly to pass legislation that will dramatically alter the role of Israel's judiciary and the balance of powers. If, as appears likely, the legislation goes through, Chuck believes that Israel will have become an illiberal democracy, akin to Turkey and Hungary, within a matter of weeks. In effect, Israel will have only one branch of government, the executive, which will control both the legislative and judicial branches and in which those under indictment, including the premier, appoint their own judges. Danny agrees regarding the primary reform, the so-called “override law”, but sees merit to at least some of the other changes. He is particularly concerned by the proposed reforms' impact on Israel's international standing, including the danger of Israel being referred to the International Court of Justice. Both are deeply concerned by the politicization of Israel's civil service and breakup of ministries for purely political purposes. China is rapidly becoming a major player in the Middle East, no longer just in terms of oil imports, but regional security affairs, as well. Xi's visit to Saudi Arabia was designed at least partly as a counterbalance to China's ties with Iran. Chuck emphasizes that one of the reasons for the Gulf countries' interest in expanded ties with China is their decreasing confidence in the US security commitment to them and the understanding that Israel, especially under the new government, cannot constitute even a substitute for the US. Danny starts a discussion of the impact of US-Chinese ties on US ties with Israel, including the Phalcon case, one of the worst crises in US-Israeli relations. Join us as they agree and disagree, in detail and in-depth, always respectfully, on the critical issues Israel faces. The MirYam Institute. Episode 17 of the Israel Defense and Diplomacy Forum (IDDF) – with Prof. Chuck Freilich, former Israeli Deputy National Security Advisor, and Danny Ayalon, former Deputy Foreign Minister and Ambassador to Washington. In this podcast, Chuck and Danny discuss what being pro-Israel means today and the role of AIPAC and JStreet. Although Chuck comes from Israel's center-left and Danny from the center-right, in this week's podcast they are in almost full accord. Both are strong supporters of AIPAC and believe that JStreet plays a deeply harmful role.Chuck agrees with J Street substantively on some of the issues, especially the need for a two-state solution and, at least until recently, the need to return to the JCPOA (Iran nuclear deal). Nevertheless, both he and Danny strongly agree that the place to change Israel's policies is in Israel and not by lobbying the USgovernment against the democratically elected government of Israel. Both Chuck and Danny believe that JStreet causes a split in the pro-Israel lobby that greatly weakens the strength of the US-Israeli relationship, one of the fundamental pillars of Israel's national security and, as such, that it constitutes a threat to Israel's security.Whereas AIPAC is largely responsible for the $170 billion in US aid that Israel will have received by the end of the current 10-year package, JStreet has yet to account for one cent of that. Moreover, JStreet is essentially a 2 issue organization - the Palestinian issue and blind support for the Iran nuclear deal – without recognizing that Israel is much more than that, a complex array of domestic and foreign issues. Both Chuck and Danny fully recognize the right ofall Americans, Jewish and otherwise, to expresscriticism of Israel, much as Israeli Jews do, but believe that JStreet has crossed a line and simply become an anti-Israel organization. Danny begins the discussion by talking about the history of Zionism and what it means and argues that there is no Judaism today without Israel.Chuck could not agree more.Join us as they agree and disagree, in detail and in-depth, always respectfully, on the critical issues Israel faces..The MirYam Institute. Episode 16 of the Israel Defense and Diplomacy Forum (IDDF) – with Prof. Chuck Freilich, former Israeli Deputy National Security Advisor, and Danny Ayalon, former Deputy Foreign Minister and Ambassador to Washington. In this episode of the IDDF Podcast, Chuck and Danny discuss the emerging crisis in US-Israeli relations, even before the new government has taken office. Prominent American Jews have already stated that their previously unconditional support for Israel is no longer such. Others have at least indirectly lent their support to the growing calls to condition US military aid to Israel, heretofore the sacrosanct bedrock of the bilateral relationship, on changes in its policies towards the Palestinians. Still others bemoan the loss of the Israel “we once knew”.Chuck is more understanding of the sentiment behind these statements and Danny, as is his wont, takes it in greater stride, but both deeply deplore them. They agree that the importance of the Palestinian issue, notwithstanding, Israel is far more than a one-issue country and the relationship with the US is a critically important pillar of its national security. Israel still faces an existential threat from Iran, unprecedented destruction to its home front in the event of a further round with Hezbollah and an increasingly significant threat from Hamas. They then turn to political developments and to the dismantlement of critical parts of Israel's defense establishment and educational system, as political expedients, for purposes of coalition formation. On this issue, Danny is at least as concerned as Chuck. They then discuss a leak of the IDF Chief of Staff's (CoS) strong opposition to the impending changes, bordering on an unprecedented refusal to accept civilian oversight of the military. Danny tries to downplay the leak, while Chuck, who fully sympathizes with the CoS' dilemma, is more troubled by the ramifications for Israel's democracy. Both agree that the political meddling in critical governmental systems is unacceptable. The podcast concludes on a positive note, with a discussion of new developments in Israel's laser air-defense capabilities and US-Israeli cooperation in this critical area. Join us as they agree and disagree, in detail and in-depth, always respectfully, on the critical issues Israel faces. The MirYam Institute. I caught up with Poland's Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Pryzdaz at the Aspen Security Conference in mid July.  Poland is a front line state to the crisis in Ukraine and has been directly impacted by Russia's invasion, including hosting millions of Ukrainian refugees. Poland was also and early target of Vladimir Putin's efforts to use gas exports as a kind of blackmail; and when Poland refused to pay for Russian gas in Rubles, Russian gas was abruptly cut off.  I kick off my conversation with the Deputy Foreign Minister with a discussion about the refugee situation in Poland. We have an extended conversation about how Poland responded to Russia's abrupt suspension of gas exports and what lessons from that episode Poland might impart on other countries in Europe. We then have a broad conversation about how Poland's proximity to the fighting in Ukraine is shaping its approach to that conflict.

Episode 4 of the Israel Defense and Diplomacy Forum (IDDF) – with Prof. Chuck Freilich, former Israeli Deputy National Security Advisor, and Danny Ayalon, former Deputy Foreign Minister and ambassador to Washington. In this podcast, they discuss the primary domestic and national security ramifications of Israel's upcoming elections, and President Biden's trip to Israel and Saudi Arabia in mid-July. Both agree that Israel's ability to address the Iranian, Hezbollah and Hamas threats, as well as the Palestinian and other major issues, will be impaired by the ongoing political crisis. They also agree that the primary focus of Biden's trip will be Saudi Arabia and the need for heightened oil production, following the war in Ukraine, but that this will be an opportunity for Biden to demonstrate Democratic support for Israel prior to the mid-term elections and to strengthen Lapid in Israel's elections. Chuck believes that the very future of Israeli democracy may be at stake, due to Netanyahu's unbridled attempt to remain in office, and that this may be the final election in which a two-state solution remains viable.
