Today I have the distinct honor of speaking with one of fencing's most impactful figures and someone who's just been a really great person to get to know in my three years with USA Fencing. It's Don Anthony. Donald is not just a world-class fencer who competed for Team USA at two Senior World Championships; he's also a visionary sports executive, an entrepreneur, and a transformational leader. He's served as President and Chair of USA Fencing, a Vice President of the FIE, and now leads The Ohio State University's fencing program as Head Coach. From discovering fencing at age 7 in Cleveland, to studying engineering at Princeton, to earning his MBA from the Wharton School — all while building a career that spans IBM, entrepreneurial ventures, and influential roles in the fencing world — Don's journey is nothing short of extraordinary. Today we have a three-part episode for you: we'll explore his fencing journey, how he balances coaching and leadership roles, and the legacy he's building for future generations of fencers at Ohio State. And as we've been doing here in season of our show, we'll end with five quick questions. --First to 15: The Official Podcast of USA FencingHost: Bryan WendellCover art: Manna CreationsTheme music: Brian Sanyshyn

The Always Aggressive Podcast had some high and low notes this week as Purdue wrestling head coach Tony Ersland and the crew talk through several happenings in the wrestling world over the last two weeks. The show opens with the latest news out of the NCAA as they addressed season-of-competition waivers and extensions of eligibility for winter sports last week, approving a blanket waiver for institutions. Ersland goes into the decision and what it means for Purdue in the coming seasons. Ersland's college coach, the legendary Dan Gable, earned our nation's highest civilian honor recently as he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Ersland shares some great stories and coaching lessons he learned from his mentor as they extend congrats. On somber notes, Fresno State announced it will be dropping its wrestling program after reinstating it just three seasons ago, and USA Wrestling made the decision to not attend the 2020 Senior World Championships in Serbia this year. The show wraps with some updates from the Boilermaker wrestling room, a quick peek at a massive high school tournament this weekend and some excitement for the start of Purdue football this weekend.  0:00 - NCAA Updates 16:18 - Dan Gable's Latest Honor28:59 - Fresno State No Longer39:54 - USA Staying Home43:01 - Updates From The Room50:30 - Good Luck at Super 32 SUBSCRIBE        MORE THAN A GAMEThe More Than A Game campaign was launched in August, in partnership with the John Purdue Club, to help the athletics department navigate the financial ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic and position Boilermaker athletics for future success. Taekwondo Passion

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 15, 2020 83:24

How'd be to coach one of your white belts in the World Championships?Carla Bacco is a taekwondo coach from Canada. I really enjoy interviewing her because she's had an amazing taekwondo journey.Carla combines teaching regular taekwondo classes with high level coaching in sport taekwondo. She has coached in World Championships, World Youth Championships, Pan Am Games and other international competitions.Being a white belt competing as a green belt. She started to learn taekwondo with Master Jorge ArenasWhen Carla went to her first competition his instructor registered her as a green belt although she was just a white belt.I think probably that was more common in the past but still happens a lot specially with talented athletes, which of course was Carla's case.Still, it must be an astonishing experience as a child. Can you imagine? You know that earning a belt requires a lot of effort and progression and suddenly you have to compete with others with a superior belt. But Carla was a natural born sparring lover. She said that for her to sparr was like a game. That's common in successful sparring athletes. They enjoy the activity that much that they do it just for fun. That passion for the sport took her soon to the Peruvian National Team.In 1996 she went to a Senior Panam Championships in Cuba. That was her first international competition… when she was only 13 year old!Of course, her mom was very hesitant in letting her compete at that age. She was the only daughter so she was very nervous.Send your little girl to another country in a team where they are also older male competitors of course it mustn't be easy.Carla highlights that the important thing was that her mother trusted in the process, let her go and allow her daughter to grow. What to do when the place where you want to train is too far?Another interesting point of Carla's journey is that she had to move from Peru to Canada when she was 16.She went from living and training in Lima, the capital city of Peru to live in Hamilton, a small town in Canada, a completely different country. One of her first priorities was finding a dojang. One of the best places to train was in Toronto, that was one hour and fifteen minutes from Hamilton driving. But by that time Carla couldn't drive. So she started taking the public transport service and the trip was 2 hours and a half each way. That's really taekwondo passion. She made it for three months but was at a certain point untenable so she started to train in a school at Hamilton.Carla showed us a very important thing. You have to do the best with what you haveSometimes the best places to train are not as near to us as we wish. We never have perfect conditions. So, we have to do the best with the situation we have, and analyze if it's worth spending 2,3,4 or more hours in transport. Why not better dedicate those hours to train? Maybe you won't get training of that super high quality but you will have more time to train.I guess now with the world after COVID options to train remotely will spread. Well, they are actually doing it.On coaching and competing at the same time. When she started to teach taekwondo and brought her athletes to competitions she usually mixed competing with coaching. She loved to still feel the adrenaline of competing but she realized that if she wanted to excel at taekwondo coaching she had to focus on her athletes. The decision was worth it. She's experienced the privilege of being part of Canada's National Team coaching staff. She's also coached at Junior and Senior World Championships. During the interview we also talked about the differences between what you need to be a good athlete and what you need to be a good coach. For example, when you are an athlete you have to focus mainly on yourself. I mean, other people is important buy your main concern is you. When you are a coach it is very important to improve your skills, but is more important the way you help others. One of the things that she loves about coaching is being able to help people that are passionate for taekwondo.Teaching a student from white belt to World Championships. One of her students qualified for Puebla 2013 World Championships. Taking a student from white belt to World Championships must be an amazing experience. And her athlete advanced three fights. He was really near to the medal. I thinkg it must be a beautiful experience as Carla told us.To start your taekwondo journey with a little kid and help him or her to aim bigger goals. The way taekwondo works now there are certain countries that allow that to happen. For example, the Russian Federation promotes that the instructors who take an athlete to the national team, later they are allowed to take their athletes to international competitions. It is a model that can be very motivating for coachesWhat do you think of it?You can tell us on the comments section. I put the links to the interview below. Please enjoy!

Usain Bolt was so energetic as a kid, his mom took him to the doctor, worried he was Hyperactive. His natural speed won him medals and world records early on, making the 6ft 5 runner a national celebrity at just 15. But his coaches worried that the pressure would be too much for Bolt. After moving to the capitol for training, he indulged in partying and eating junk food so much, his coaches pulled him from the Senior World Championships. Fearing the worries had come true, Usain had to smarten up, and do it quick if he wanted to prove them wrong.

Today’s episode is the story of David Sach, a man who has represented fencing on two continents, and who you probably know best as the Head Assigner of Sabre at most NACs. You know: the guy with the accent at the big table in the middle of the venue. You just had no idea who he really is!   David holds elite status in the fencing trifecta of competitor, coach, and referee. As a fencer, he won a number of cadet, junior, and senior National titles including a run of 5 back to back Junior National Championships, 2 silver individual medals and a team Gold at the Commonwealth Games. As a coach, he served as a British Fencing World Class Performance Pathway Sabre coach and has helped produce several national champions, World Cup medalists, a Cadet World Champion, and Olympians. And as a referee, he has earned an FIE licence which allowed him to work a couple of Senior World Championships and the 2008 Olympics.   He is currently the Director of Operations at Boston Fencing Club, one of the oldest in the country, and the Head Fencing Coach at Tufts University.   Tune in today to hear him tell you stories about his international life as an athlete, coach, and referee.

LT 068 | Greg Hughes - Integrating Technology into Collegiate Rowing Subscribe & Review : iTunes | Stitcher Earlier this year I had the pleasure of catching up with Princeton University Men's Heavyweight Rowing Coach Greg Hughes at the 2016 Joy of Sculling Conference. Greg teamed up with rowing biomechanics expert Connie Draper to give a great presentation on the integration of different types of technology into collegiate rowing. This is a fascinating look at how coaches and athletes can use data from the boat such as force curves, individual data such as heart rate variability and heart rate, and GPS data to become better informed about how to execute during training as well as enhance our ability to recover between training sessions. Greg has had tremendous success as an athlete and a coach.  Here are just some of the highlights of his career. Greg Hughes begins his eighth season with the Tiger heavyweights in 2017 and has guided Princeton to a 16-2 record over the last two seasons, as well as medals at both Sprints and IRAs both season. Last year, Princeton went 8-1 and won medals in its top four boats at postseason regattas; the varsity boat took silver at Sprints and bronze at IRAs, its best postseason performance in a decade. Since 2013, Princeton has made every grand final at Sprints and IRAs, and it hasn't finished below fourth in either. As the heavyweight coach, Hughes has led Princeton to an 48-14 record, including an 29-13 mark in the Ivy League. He has also helped several of his individual rowers to international success, including 2016 captain Martin Barakso, who was a member of the Canadian Team at the 2015 Senior World Championships. Many of his rowers have competed at the U-23 Worlds annually, including eight current or incoming rowers at the 2016 Championships. Hughes, a former Ivy League and national champion rower with the Princeton men’s lightweights, took over as head coach of the men’s lightweight crew in 2006, following the retirement of his former coach, Joe Murtaugh. In his first year, Hughes turned a team that had gone 2-7 in consecutive seasons into a program that went 5-3 and earned a bronze medal at nationals. In each of the next three seasons, Princeton’s winning percentage would improve, and the Orange and Black would win at least one medal at either the EARC or IRA championships. In 2008, the Tigers rose to No. 1 in the national rankings, won its first Goldthwait Cup over Harvard and Yale since 1999 and placed second at the Eastern championships. In 1999, Hughes co-coached the U.S. lightweight men’s 2- and the heavyweight 2+ at the World Championships, with the latter winning the gold. He co-coached the U.S. men’s eight and the men’s pair at the Under-23 World Championships in 2000, where the eight won a bronze medal. The next year, Hughes assisted Murtaugh in coaching the U.S. lightweight eight that won bronze at the World Championships. In 2002, Hughes coached the Under-23 men’s eight to a gold and the pair to a bronze at the World Championships. He also led the U.S. 4+ to a bronze medal at the 2004 World Championships. In 2005, Hughes coached the US men’s 4- which finished 4th at the Under-23 Worlds, and he coached the U.S. men's 4+ to gold at the 2007 World Championships. Hughes was a four-year lightweight rower under Murtaugh. A 1996 Princeton graduate, Hughes was undefeated in all of his four regular seasons and won two Eastern Sprints titles. He was an All-Ivy League rower on the 1994 and 1996 national championship lightweight crews. He served as team captain in 1996 and won the Gordon G. Sikes Award for the greatest contribution to Princeton lightweight crew. He would go on to be an alternate for both the 1997 and 1998 lightweight U.S. national teams.
