Artificial intelligence plays a role in the future of retail in terms of a deeper understanding of customers going beyond intuition. This week, we speak with Pedro Alves, CEO of a company called Ople, based in San Francisco. Alves was previously the Head of Data Science at a number of companies in addition to being Director of Data Science at Sentient Technologies, one of the best known AI firms in the Bay Area. Sentient has raised upwards of $200 million. We talk with Pedro about the future of retail, the future of understanding customers with artificial intelligence. Essentially asking under what circumstances would a retailer need to go beyond intuition in order to inform their understanding and their ability to influence the actions of their customers or their users. In addition to that, Alves talks with us about what has to happen to AI as a technology to become more accessible and within reach of existing enterprises. Knowing now all the points of friction for bringing AI into an existing business, he talks about the transition points that he thinks are going to have to happen over the course of the years ahead in order to make these technologies more accessible to companies.

FROM GROWING A BUSINESS IN STEALTH MODE TO CULTIVATING AN ATTITUDE OF SELF IMPROVEMENT Antoine created the technology behind Siri which he sold to Apple. He is currently the founder of Sentient Technologies, one of the worlds leading AI businesses. In his spare time he is a mentor at Zeroth AI where he is a source of brilliant advice. We cover some awesome topics about the future and the past, dealing with problems at a personnel level to threats facing the whole of humanity. Some huge idea’s that made my head spin at the time and lead to me conducting some very rapid reading up on latest tech idea's. Anyone interested in Tech and the future or just being a better person will learn plenty from Antoine. TIPS GROWTH MINDSET You can literally achieve seriously big goals if you work for them. grandfather carried on with his life with a positive attitude and went on to do incredible things without giving up. Running a business and not giving u on his personal hobbies. I don’t think i’ll ever forget the story of Antoine playing chess with him, that is truly incredible. CHALLENGE YOURSELF AND DON'T BE AFRAID TO TAKE A PAY CUT Open yourself to interesting challenges and learning experiences at every point. America vs. Japan —> choose japan. Taking the next job up the chain vs a step down in a new avenue where you can learn loads more. ASK CANDIDATES WHAT OTHERS THINK OF THEM You can get a lot more insight into how a person actually functions by asking what others think of them rather than just asking for their strengths and weaknesses. BOOKS A huge fan of history and reading real books. I would love a chance to look into his personal library. but for now we have these books from him as his must reads. Get any of the books free on audible (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audible-Free-Trial-Digital-Membership/dp/B00OPA2XFG?tag=samharris48%E2%80%9321) LOST ILLUSIONS (LA COMÉDIE HUMAINE #38) - HONORÉ DE BALZAC (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lost-Illusions-Classics-Honore-Balzac/dp/0140442510/ref=sr_1_5?crid=29T01OXRDFX70&keywords=honore+de+balzac&qid=1580442932&s=books&sprefix=honore%2Caudible%2C375&sr=1-5) I’d never heard of this book but on investigation it sounds amazing. It seems to be considered one of the Great french classics that is taught in school but much more appreciated as an adult and I really can’t wait to read it. It seems to be a coming of age novel about a french man who moves to Paris to seek love and glory and i’m hoping to get insights on life and France all in a beautiful novel. MEMOIRS: A TWENTIETH CENTURY JOURNEY IN SCIENCE AND POLITICS - EDWARD TELLER AUTOBIOGRAPHY (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Memoirs-Twentieth-century-Journey-Politics-2001-11-26/dp/B01K0TNNJK/ref=sr_1_1?crid=22NC5EPOCPVK7&keywords=edward+teller&qid=1580443005&s=books&sprefix=edward+te%2Cstripbooks%2C456&sr=1-1) It covers the story behind the H-bomb as well as The entire path of edward teller leading up to and after it. He also recounts the effects had on him from his relationships with great minds like einstein, von neuman, borr and fermi. So another book I”m excited to read. NOTHING TO ENVY - BY BARBARA DEMICK (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nothing-Envy-Lives-North-Korea/dp/184708141X/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=nothing+to+envy&qid=1580443033&s=books&sr=1-1) This book had a huge effect on me really learning how an entire society can be controlled by their rulers and that it’s actually still going on today just made it feel all the more real and worrying. So a truly great book that covers the story of several families in North Korea from the end of the war up until today. Possibly the best book I read last year. This Week in Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence (AI) Podcast
My guest this week is Risto Miikkulainen, professor of computer science at UT-Austin and vice president of Research at Sentient Technologies. Risto came locked and loaded to discuss a topic that we've received a ton of requests for -- evolutionary algorithms. During our talk we discuss some of the things Sentient is working on in the financial services and retail fields, and we dig into the technology behind it, evolutionary algorithms, which is also the focus of Risto’s research at UT. I really enjoyed this interview and learned a ton, and I’m sure you will too! Notes for this show can be found at twimlai.com/talk/47.
"AI Powered Investing" with Mike Kane of Hedgeable and Jeff Holman of Sentient Technologies. Moderated by Sinisa Babcic of Ernst & Young. Artificial intelligence has started making significant headway into financial services; at LendIt USA 2017 we hosted a fireside chat moderated by Ernst & Young that featured a leading AI powered hedge fund in Sentient Technologies and a private banking platform run by AI in Hedgeable; the panel discussed the current state of AI in financial services and whether or not it has become overhyped; they touched upon the uses of AI within their firms as well as within the broader market; panelists talked about ensuring you have the correct infrastructure when implementing AI, specifically since you cannot just bolt on this technology to any firm; they also discussed some of the lessons learned from the past few years like the power of APIs and high frequency trading; additionally they talked about AI as a cost saver for companies and the ability it has to transform the repeatable tasks; as more firms are beginning to incorporate this technology it is helpful to understand how to use it correctly and these panelists laid out some good examples.

He thinks "at scale." For example, Change.org was inspired by his "for the world” goal.We talked about the inception of Siri, and where machine learning is headed next, and debated if it's good or bad for the future. We also discussed how he creates and approaches seemingly insurmountable challenges and achieves them.Oh -- and Adam is an author of 60 publications and 26 patents. Also, there are so many pearls of wisdom that are shared in these conversations.
