Episode 181 In this episode, Frank sits down with Kelly Dutton of One Click Commercial Funding—one of the most dependable referral partners for residential originators who don't venture into commercial or SBA lending. If you've ever hesitated to pass off a deal because you weren't sure how to do it without losing the client (or the relationship), this conversation is going to feel like oxygen. Most loan officers make the handoff harder than it needs to be. Frank breaks down the simple, repeatable approach he uses—along with strategies used by other successful LOs—that keeps clients confident, keeps you in control of the relationship, and keeps referral revenue flowing. You'll learn: The exact handoff phrasing that removes friction How to stay the trusted advisor even after you refer the deal What makes Kelly such a strong partner for originators Real stories from LOs who refer to One Click and get paid with confidence If you want a smooth process, happy clients, and a partner who actually makes you look good, visit http://workwithoneclick.com to get started with Kelly today. In this episode, I sit down with Shannon Hoff, a seasoned mortgage pro who just made a career move that many loan officers quietly think about but rarely act on: shifting from mortgage banker to mortgage broker. Shannon spent 20 years on the banking side, working with only six companies over two decades — and two of those closed their doors. In an industry known for turnover, her track record of stability is rare. That's exactly why her decision to make the switch is such a powerful story. We dig into: What finally pushed her to explore the broker world The biggest surprises (good and bad) after leaving the banking model The key differences she wishes she'd understood earlier How control, product diversity, and borrower solutions factored into her move What she'd tell any loan officer considering the same jump Shannon's journey is honest, grounded, and refreshingly drama-free — no burning bridges, no "banker bashing," just real insight from someone who took the leap after two decades of loyalty. If you're a loan officer wondering whether the broker channel is worth exploring, this episode is like a flashlight in a dark attic… except with fewer spider webs. In real estate, you either have what it takes to make $500k or you don't. What holds people back from the income level they want is putting their focus on the wrong things. We think prioritizing everyone else is what will allow us to succeed but we actually have to learn to respect ourselves more. We pour everything into our businesses and leave very little for our families instead of giving them our best. We chase small wins instead of making the long-term legacy play. What if we could make a leap in our income by making small changes to how we do things? How can we open our own inner dialogue so we can grow? How do we build strong relationships and connections while still respecting ourselves? In this episode, I'm joined by the co-founder of Lopez & Lopez REALTORS® and author of “The Best Way to Do Everything Wrong”, Tyler Lopez. We talk about the value of respecting ourselves as business owners, and what keeps us from earning what we want. Everything in life is basically relationship building. -Tyler Lopez Things You'll Learn In This Episode Independence vs teamworkCompeting alone and winning with a team are not mutually exclusive. How can being independent while working with a team help shape a business? Doing one thing wellMany people believe reaching their income goals means sacrificing their most important relationships. How do we shift our perspective on this? Bad hiresA bad hire can disrupt team dynamics and hinder long-term growth, as they may lack alignment with the company's values, culture, or long-term vision. In this episode of the Top of Mind podcast, Mike Simonsen sits down with Tyron McDaniel, CEO of Houston Vintage Homes, to talk about his vision for affordable and attainable housing. Tyron shares why he runs his companies for “impact over income”, discusses his approach to building that creates pride for his tenants and long-term value for communities, and outlines the techniques he uses to build affordable housing successfully. He also offers a look at which markets are most exciting for his work, and which tech trends are the most encouraging for the future of affordable housing. About Tyron McDaniel Tyron began his real estate career working in a mortgage broker's office as a secretary back in 2000, with the ultimate goal of one day becoming a home builder and developer of affordable housing. After becoming a Mortgage Broker, then a Real Estate Agent, Tyron began to purchase rental properties before venturing into the Buy, Fix & Flip space. This ultimately led to him becoming a homebuilder in 2005, setting the foundation for Houston Vintage Homes and its sister companies, which are focused on the design and development of affordable housing in inner-city communities around the country. With a keen eye for design and historical context, Tyron now works with multiple cities, and coaches and mentors investors, home builders and developers from around the country in creating affordable housing solutions to meet the ever-growing need for more affordable housing. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn: Tyron's vision for affordable and attainable housing Why he runs his companies for “impact over income” How affordable housing helps not only the existing residents but attracts desirable growth for a community The difference between gentrification and displacement How compassionate capitalism creates long-term value Why he looks to build pride in the home for tenants in his properties Techniques he uses for creating affordable housing when so few others can do so Which markets are most exciting for his work in affordable housing Which economic factors are hindering the ability to create affordable housing Which technology trends are the most encouraging for the future of affordable housing Resources mentioned in this episode: Connect with Tyron on LinkedIn Houston Vintage Homes Tyron on Twitter Mike Simonsen on LinkedIn Altos Research Featuring Mike Simonsen, President of Altos Research A true data geek, Mike founded Altos Research in 2006 to bring data and insight on the U.S. housing market to those who need it most. Many become entrepreneurs because they hate their jobs and have a burning desire to leave their 9-5. Not Mark Langdon. Because unlike many, he actually loves his job as a chemical engineer, and primarily became a real estate investor to attain that holy grail of freedom called “financial peace of mind”. And by just about anyone's account, he's certainly achieved it! Here's a small sample of what we discuss: * The #1 thing that enabled him to make the jump from single family homes to larger multifamily properties. * 3 tips on how to grow your real estate portfolio – even with a full-time W2 job. * Mark's secret to creating a “burning desire” (this is what really keeps you committed and sticking to a Game Plan!). * [Case Study] A blow-by-blow breakdown on how Mark and his partner found, funded, and sold a 112-unit value-add apartment complex – and hit a mammoth HOMERUN. * Why the multifamily game is a “team sport”. * When you should be “taking some chips off the table” (in other words, selling your properties). * Mark's simple formula for achieving true “financial peace of mind” (this is probably the safest and most secure path to financial success!). * Much, much more! More about Mark Langdon: Mark Langdon has been investing in residential real estate since 1991, and continues to work full-time as a Senior Director Project Delivery Group/Chemical Engineer performing project execution of engineering, procurement, and construction projects in the pharmaceutical, chemical, and food industries and is licensed as a Professional Engineer. Mark is currently a General Partner (GP) and Key Principle (KP) managing multi-family apartments in the Southeast and Midwest. He is also a loan sponsor using agency debt loans (Freddie Mac/Fannie Mae) for his multi-family/rental portfolio peaking at 742 units over the last 4 years. On this episode Jeff goes over a deal that he has been working on and really breaks it down by the numbers to show us that by looking at a deal in just one other way how the opportunity becomes clear, and how to create a win/win for everyone involved. He dives into the details and demonstrates how to look at a deal from a Buy & Hold perspective in order to show how a property produces a return for the investor and specifically a good cash on cash return. This is important to learn because if you have a property that you're looking at where the numbers don't quite work for a Fix & Flip, maybe the seller needs too much or owes too much money, you can analyze the deal as a Buy & Hold where you don't need to spend as much to to get the house in rental condition and by taking that into account the deal then works because less cash is needed up front. If the deal can produce a 10%, 15%, or higher Cash on Cash Return as a rental property then it may work for you or you can certainly find another investor that it will work for and wholesale it! This is how you make deals work.
